Good news for the Booklet 3G users! Adobe just made ...

Good news for the Booklet 3G users! Adobe just made available the Flash 10.1 Plugin! The updated Flash 10.1 is supposed to improve the performance of your Nokia Booklet 3G in everything related to Flash content, that includes HD YouTube videos, Hulu HD and more.

The Flash 10.1 is not the definite release, it is a beta version that is in the latest stages of testing before it goes official. The Beta3 10.1 enables hardware graphics acceleration on netbooks with the Intel GMA 500, like the Nokia Booklet 3G. I just installed the new Flash and after a playing with it, I can tell the difference, videos do seem to play smoother. I was able to play a 720p YouTube video without major lag, however, I didn’t have time to test the new Plugin further. To install the new Flash Plugin just:

1. Download the Windows Version from here: Download Flash 10.1

2. While it is downloading go to ”Control Panel” then select ”Programs and Features” after that just uninstall the Flash Plugin if you already had one installed.

3. Close your web browser and start the installation.

I would recommend a reboot, I also have some Win7 updates to do. After that you should be able to note at least a slight difference when playing videos. Let us know your experience, and stay tuned for when the definite Flash Plugin version arrives!

Remember we told you that the Nokia X6 was coming in the NAM flavor? Not many thought that it was going to come, and it took some time, but is finally here, the NAM version of the Nokia X6.

Nokia USA just made available the Nokia X6 in the North American Market. Currently the Nokia X6 is being offered in both of the Flagship stores in the US, it will also hit the NokiaUSA online store, what we still don’t know is when. The Nokia X6 first made is debut as a ”Comes With Music” only phone for markets that supported the service, Nokia later unveiled a 16GB version, but no NAM X6 was mentioned. Today the X6 NAM silently appeared at NokiaUSA in three colors, yellow, blue and black. Along with a description that reads ”responsive to your touch,” which we find very ironical, partly because the Nokia X6 is the first capacitive touchscreen device from Nokia. Seems they learnt that resistive screens weren’t that responsive after all.

The X6 can be pre-ordered here: NokiaUSA

Here are excellent news for Nokia users who have Sky TV and wanted to switch to the iPhone just because it supported the SkyTV app. SkyTV is now available for Nokia smartphones! Only Nokia touchscreen phones are supported by SkyTV: Nokia 5800, Nokia N97 (Mini), Nokia X6, 5530 and so on. The SkyTV app will become available for more devices, we will have to wait and see which devices will be supported, hopefully, S60 3rd Ed devices like the popular E71, E75 or E72.

The SkyTV app for Nokia is completely free, you can watch SkyTV live on your Nokia. All the SkyTV app needs to work is your username and password, after that you are ready to go. You can also set up your Sky+ box so you can use Remote Record and start recording from your phone the shows you are going to miss. The app looks really cool, head to the Ovi Store and get SkyTV for your Nokia device. SkyTV or you can use the direct link: http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/SonyE_novid/SkyMobile_SonyWithoutTv.jar

I love to try new apps on my Nokia devices, ...

I love to try new apps on my Nokia devices, apps make the phone fun and add functionality to it. There are many apps for the Nokia N900 and Maemo5, that is why I have collected my favorite top 10 applications for the N900, here they are, starting from the 1th all the way to my favorite app for the N900:

10. TouchSearch

Apps like TouchSearch are what makes having a homescreen just brilliant, is so convenient, fast and simple to use that you fall in love with your homescreen and want to make it perfect and as feature-packed as possible. TouchSearch is one of the best widgets I have ever used. TouchSearch is a search widget for Maemo that lets you search right in the homescreen, it works brilliantly. You can select a main service, when you click the widget is opens a search box and lets you search. But the cool part is that there are more services you can use as easily as the main one. By pressing the ”+” a list opens, you select the service and a search box opens. This widget is having the web two clicks away, everything: eBay, Amazon, Google, Wikipedia, Dictionary.com, YouTube, WebMD, IMDb, and more as you can add services. You can download it here: TouchSearch

9. Stopish

This is rather a simple, yet necessary app that every phone must have. Stopish is basically a Stopwatch, no more no less. It comes really handy in the gym together with the N900’s kickstand, or when cooking. I have found myself using this app a lot, and the way you can position the N900 with its kickstand just makes it even cooler. You can get Stopish here: Stopish

8. Conversations Inbox Desktop Widget

Here is one cool widget that Nokia should have included by default on the Nokia N900: Conversations Widget. The N900 is a messaging powerhouse, with the amazing Conversations app you can talk with just about everyone you know. What this app needed was a little version of it on the homescreen. The Conversations widget provides just that, with this free widget for the N900 you can check SMS and IM messages, right on your N900’s desktop screen. Is a must for this device, you can get it here: Conversations Widget

7. Hahlo, The Twitter Client

The N900 has two advantage over all other smartphones, its web browser and its multitasking capability. By mixing this two advantages you can use pretty cool services, like Hahlo. Web Apps are not really apps for phones, but that changes in the N900, web apps function just like any other app because of the powerful web browsing and multitasking capability of the N900. I can’t find a good ”traditional” Twitter app for the N900, but I found Hahlo. Hahlo is a web service that offers all the advantages from a Twitter client. I have Hahlo constantly open on the background and keep a shortcut on my homescreen, to start using Hahlo just head to: hahlo.com

6. Angry Birds

AngryBirds is a really cool game for the Nokia N900. When I downloaded I couldn’t stop playing it, I left it open on the background and played every sec that I was free. Angry Birds is a really simple game but is totally addictive, you can’t stop playing it. AngryBirds is free, and you can buy more levels, but believe me the 20 free levels are more than enough to keep you playing for at least a couple of days. Angry Birds

5. Two Applets That Will Light Your Way

I really like applets, they add complex functionality easily on the frop down menu in the homescreen, it is also available device-wide, you can access it anytime on any app. Here are two cool applets that are really useful, brightness and flashlight. The Brightness applet lets you select the screen brightness from 1 to 5. Is really useful, as the N900’s battery is not that great, I keep the brightness at 3, but when I am going to show off my device I quickly open the applet and increase the brightness to 5. The flashlight is also a great applet, you can quickly turn on the LED on the back of the N900 to light your way. The bad thing is that you first have to open the camera cover, which means you have to close the camera app to use the flashlight. Brigthness and Flashlight

4. OMweather

Forget the Foreca Weather app, OMweather is sooo much better. With OMweather you have a lot more of settings and option, also, you have different sets of icons you can use, not to mention that graphics by default are better. I also like about OMweahter that I can update it manually bu just pressing the widget and selecting ”Update,” then the app closes by itself, the weather is updated and that is it, very easy and pain-free. OMweather also supports more regions, I was able to find my city in OMweather but not in Foreca weather.

3. Personal Photo Frame

This is a really simple but fun widget, it should come pre-installed on the N900, but well, it didn’t. The Personal Photo Frame is just a widget that shows your pictures on the homescreen, the cool thing is that it has a lot of options. You can select different sizes, and determine how often pictures change. It really makes your homescreen look better with the pictures you have taken. You can also manually scroll through the pics right on the homescreen!

2. Hermes

Hermes is a very impressive app that should come built-into Maemo5, it is just amazing how it works. Hermes expands the contacts you have on your Phonebook with details from Facebook and Twitter. The N900 supports images for Contacts, that is nothing new, but if you have had this app on phones you know that is unlikely (impossible) to just have a nice picture of everyone you know. That is what Hermes does, it pulls the images from Facebook and Twitter and automatically assigns it to the correct contact on your Contacts app. It also syncs the birthdays with your calendar, so you never miss one. It is really useful, impressive, almost magical. Hermes

1. Joikuspot

Joikuspot has been a popular app among Nokia fans, and they did not let down Nokia users when Nokia released Maemo5. Although it was not immediately available, Joikuspot is now ready for the N900. It is an early beta version but does its job very well. I have ATT so I only get EDGE, but those with an N900 on an HSPA network will sure want to have this app to connect to the internet everywhere. To get Joikuspot head here: Joikuspot

0. Morpho QuickPanorama

Other Nokia devices offer Panoramic Pics as a standard feature, the N900 didn’t bring this feature but can be added by just installing one app. Morpho QuickPanorama allows you to take great panoramic pictures with the N900. The app is free to use but you have to pay to extend the features. With the free version you can take just VGA pics, but it is amazing, you take the Panoramic Pic in real time like if you were taking a video. The result is a perfectly made panoramic picture, like you have never seen before.

EXTRA!. Extra Plugins for Conversations App

This is by far the most useful thing you can install on the Nokia N900. The already awesome conversations app becomes ten times more useful when you install the extra protocol plugins. By installing this app, you can now chat over: Facebook, AIM, GTalk, MSN, Group Wise, ICQ, Gadu Gadu, QQ, SIP, Salut, Sametime and Yahoo all in the Conversations app. The app is just amazing, before this app, there were phones with chat apps, this is completely different. The plugin allows you to chat practically with everyone you know over different services in just one place, the only thing I really wished it supported to was Blackberry Messenger. You can find a guide on how to install the plugins here: Install Plugins N900

F-Secure, the Antivirus company is giving away one Nokia Booklet 3G as a prize for their contest, is really easy to enter, basically you have to follow them on Twitter.
The news about MeeGo are pretty exciting, Nokia really surprised ...

The news about MeeGo are pretty exciting, Nokia really surprised the industry by teaming with Intel to develop this powerful, open source OS. MeeGo is the the result from the merge between Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo. Together, they will combine to create a powerful and flexible OS that can run in everything from TVs, to Ent. Systems in Cars, Netbooks, Media Devices, and of course, mobile computers. MeeGo is a big thing, the press didn’t really pay attention to it because to be honest, Nokia doesn’t receive much attention this days.

One of the main things that got my attention is that almost no one seems to like the name ”MeeGo.” I think it sounds more like a service, the term ”Me” and Go” are too widely used: the combination ”MeeGo” just sounds generic. So how would you name MeeGo? Maybe you can come up with a better name, and who knows?

Today my Ovi Suite notified me that version 2.1.0.87 is available! It brings new great features that are really useful and cool to see in the Nokia Ovi Suite. The first new feature that I noticed is that Contacts now sync to Ovi.com. So your contacts will not only be saved on your computer but safely in the web too. The new update also brought ”Ovi Player” which is a replacement for Nokia Music. The new Ovi Player is a standalone app, is not part of the Ovi Suite. Its a cool way to manage music on your computer and phone. (BTW, I forgot to take the screenshot while I was updating, so that is why the pic says is already installed)

Other new features that brought the new version of Ovi are four new applications for the Nokia N97, this are just the apps that are available at ”App Update” on the phone, for example, Mail for Exchange and Ovi Contacts. I also notice the whole program faster. I really like what Ovi is becoming, you can have a lot of things in one place. To get the new version just go to ”Software Update” on the Ovi Suite.

Today Nokia and Intel announced that they would be merging ...

Today Nokia and Intel announced that they would be merging their own Linux OSs to create a single one. Intel will be giving Moblin, and Nokia will be giving Maemo together to create Meego.

Meego will be a software platform that will support a lot of devices: phones, handhelds, TVs, netbooks, mediaphones and cars! Nokia announced that Meego will be ready the second quarter of this year, together with new devices from different manufacturers. It is still not clear what happens with Maemo6, seems like Maemo5 will be the only version of Maemo since Meego is now Maemo, or perhaps Nokia will keep naming mobile computers (phones like the N900) under the Maemo branding while being MeeGo at the same time. ”Maemo6 will be MeeGo compatible…..consider Maemo6 already a MeeGo instance”

Mobiln and Maemo communities now have a new home at MeeGo.com.

Finally we see what the Symbian Foundation was up to: ...

Finally we see what the Symbian Foundation was up to: Symbian^3. Well, we knew they were creating Symbian^3, and Symbian^4 and so on, but we didn’t exactly know how this new version of Symbian would look like. Until today. The Symbian Foundation just revealed Symbian3 at all its splendor, a brand new version of Symbian that changes things. Symbian^3 will support multitouch (so that means capacitive touchscreen devices), as well as high-end 3D graphics. But what we most like is the super-multitasking capability. Of course that getting rid of the annoying pop-ups and warnings is a great thing too. Ahh, and Symbian^3 supports HD! Here is the complete description from Symbian:

HDMI support enables users to plug their phone into a TV and watch a high-definition movie at 1080p quality without a Blu-ray player.

Music store integration embedded within the radio enables users to identify a song and learn more about it. The addition of a “buy now” button, which links with the user’s chosen music store, makes purchasing easy.

More efficient memory management due to Writeable Data Paging allows more applications to run in parallel for a faster, more complete and efficient multi-tasking experience, especially on mid-range hardware.

A new 2D and 3D graphics architecture takes full advantage of the hardware acceleration available to deliver a faster and more responsive user interface. Users, developers and device creators will all benefit greatly from the visual enhancements and smooth transitions that will significantly improve the look-and-feel of their applications and services. Combined with industry-standard OpenGL ES, the new architecture also provides a great platform for high performance games – all without slowing the phone down.

The industry-leading networking architecture, ready for 4G networks, provides next-generation Internet experiences on today’s devices. Consumers will benefit from the architecture’s ability to seamlessly balance each individual application’s needs regarding factors such as bandwidth, latency and jitter. This improves the consumer’s experience of network-dependent applications and Internet services like VoIP and media content streaming.

One-click connectivity for all applications greatly simplifies the process of connecting to the Internet, without interrupting the user. New global settings allow the user to configure platform-wide behaviour, for example ensuring the device automatically switches from cellular to WLAN when a free WLAN network is available.

Usability enhancements across the user interface include the adoption of a direct “single tap” interaction model, making it much easier to complete common tasks on a device. Multi-touch support for gestures such as “pinch-to-zoom” forms the basis of a gesture framework that can be extended and leveraged by the developer community.

The Homescreen takes a big step forward with support for multiple pages of widgets and a simple flick gesture to move between them. The widget manager makes discovery and download of new widgets simple and support for multiple instances of a native widget means that consumers can monitor multiple weather forecasts, news feeds, social networking accounts or multiple email accounts simultaneously through a common interface.Lee M. Williams, Executive Director of the Symbian Foundation, said: “S^3 is another huge milestone in the evolution of our platform. Now that it is fully open source, the door is open to individual contributors, device creators and third-party developer companies, as well as other organizations, to create more compelling products and services than ever before. We have enjoyed significant momentum since we completed S^2, with companies including Sun, Nokia, Ixonos, Comarch and Accenture, among others, contributing to S^3. We are now looking to build on this momentum and remain on course to complete S^4 later this year.”The developer experience has also been greatly improved. The Qt toolkit is pre-integrated into all kits and the runtime in S^3 will run on existing devices back to S60 3.1. The Web Runtime support provided in the platform remains a key part of the developer story, allowing web developers to directly re-use their skills in HTML, CSS, Javascript and AJAX to create Homescreen widgets and standalone applications.

And of course, the video:

I really like to try different themes on my devices, ...

I really like to try different themes on my devices, I like to download different themes to find one that I really like. But although the Nokia N900 supports themes, there aren’t many themes available for the N900 yet, there will be in the future. There are a few themes on the Ovi Store, but I find them really bad, so I thought that there had to be more themes on the web. I found two really nice looking themes for the N900, a ”Glossy” theme and a cool ”Maemo Orange” theme. To get them just follow this instructions:

1. Open the web browser and go to maemo.org

2. Select ”Downloads”

3. Right hand side select ”Maemo5”

4. On the search box type ”Theme”

As you can see, there are just two themes available for the Nokia N900 through Maemo.org. To install them, just click on the big green arrow and follow the process. Although there are other themes for the N900 available on the web, they involve getting root on the device and manually transferring files. I might do a tutorial in the coming days on how to install this themes.
