The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday mocked the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, saying he was surprised the party still exists and should be allowed to die.

Akpabio made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking at the commissioning of a road project in the Gaduwa District of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Akpabio, who was reacting to the emergence of a PDP candidate in a recent election, said, “I didn’t know there was still PDP. I am sure he is somewhere, and so many other distinguished senators, members of the working committee of the people of the APC, Wike, stop confusing us. If a party has died, allow it to die.”

“So members of the working committee, I won’t discuss anything on the working committee of the PDP like I said, anything that has died has died,” he stated.

Akpabio praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on his performance in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu says his administration has come to work for the betterment of Nigerians and not to occupy spaces.

Tinubu, represented by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said this on Wednesday at the inauguration of the newly constructed Akinwumi Ajibola Street, comprising Important Local Streets, ILS, 16, 18 and 19 in Gaduwa District in Abuja.

The president stressed that the road project symbolised the government’s resolve to restore access and fulfil its promises under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are here to open a road, but more importantly, we are here to restore access.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, we said clearly: we did not come to occupy space. We came to work. Today, that promise is visible on these streets.

“In this government, we measure ourselves by finished work. This street is finished work,” he said.

Nigeria omitted public spending worth 2% of GDP from recent budgets - IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Nigeria failed to record public spending equivalent to about 2 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in recent official budgets, creating a gap between its reported fiscal deficit and actual financing needs.

Christian Ebeke, the IMF’s resident representative in Nigeria, spoke on Wednesday at a meeting with business executives in Lagos.

Ebeke said the discrepancy means Nigeria’s fiscal deficit appears smaller than the government’s actual borrowing needs because some capital expenditure was excluded from budget documents and implementation reports.

He said the unreported spending was linked, in part, to large government projects executed off-budget, making it more difficult to accurately assess the country’s fiscal position and public investment levels.

“So far we think that there are about 2% of GDP of expenditure that were not reported that should be reported and should be recorded, so that this statistical discrepancy will disappear,” Ebeke said.

He added that incomplete fiscal reporting also complicates coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities because policymakers may not have a full picture of the government’s true financing requirements.

According to Ebeke, Nigerian authorities have started addressing the issue by repealing and revising recent budget laws to incorporate previously unrecorded expenditure.

However, he said updated budget implementation reports are still required to fully reflect the changes.

The IMF official stressed that improving fiscal transparency is essential, warning that off-budget spending raises concerns about procurement processes, accountability and oversight.

Ebeke’s comments come after the IMF, in its latest Article IV consultation on Nigeria, commended the federal government’s recent macroeconomic reforms, saying they had strengthened economic stability and improved investor confidence.

The fund, however, warned that the gains from the reforms had yet to translate into broad-based improvements in living standards and could be threatened by external shocks, including the conflict in the Middle East.

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has described the latest revelations by the Association of Power Generation Companies, APGC, as the final collapse of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku noted the startling disclosure by the executive secretary of the APGC, Dr Joy Ogaji, that the much-publicised N501 billion bond has not even been fully disbursed, despite repeated government claims to the contrary.

Atiku said this development raises grave questions about transparency, fiscal discipline and the credibility of Tinubu’s administration’s economic management.

Even more damning is her challenge to the federal government to publish the complete list of beneficiaries, the amounts paid to each generation company and the dates of such payments if indeed the money has been released.

Ogaji’s vivid description of the government’s token payment as “like rubbing oil on a crying child’s mouth to imply that he had eaten” perfectly captures the Tinubu administration’s approach to governance: grand announcements, impressive figures, glossy headlines, and very little substance.

“For months, Nigerians have been inundated with announcements of bond after bond supposedly floated to clear power sector debts. First came the promise of a N590 billion intervention. Then came the N501 billion bond, celebrated as a major breakthrough. Before long, the country was told about a multi-trillion-naira settlement programme. Today, another debt package is being contemplated while the very companies the government claims to have settled insist that the liabilities have continued to grow.

“This is no longer a policy failure. It is a crisis of credibility.

“The question is no longer whether the government is borrowing. The question is why Nigerians are repeatedly being asked to applaud fresh borrowing to solve a problem that the government insists it solved only yesterday.

“If the earlier interventions worked, why is another intervention necessary?

“If the debts were substantially cleared, why are the creditors saying otherwise?

“If the government has faithfully discharged its obligations, why has the Association of Power Generation Companies publicly challenged the minister’s claims and demanded documentary evidence?

“These are not opposition questions. They are industry questions. They deserve government answers,” Atiku stated.

He demanded that the federal government should immediately accept GenCo’s challenge and publish the names of every generation company that received payment.

“Public money cannot disappear into official press statements. Every naira borrowed in the name of Nigerians must be traceable to its destination.

“Sadly, this administration appears to believe that governance is an endless exercise in announcements. Every challenge is met with another ceremony. Every crisis is greeted with another headline. Every unresolved debt is answered with another borrowing plan. Yet electricity generation remains constrained, investors remain uncertain, businesses continue to spend fortunes powering themselves, and ordinary Nigerians still pay exorbitantly for darkness.

“A government that constantly changes the figures cannot expect citizens to trust its arithmetic. A government that celebrates disbursements which beneficiaries dispute cannot expect investors to trust its assurances. A government that asks future generations to repay debts incurred Today has a moral obligation to account for every kobo borrowed.

“The Tinubu administration must stop moving the goalposts.

“It cannot continue to ask Nigerians to celebrate fresh debt while refusing to provide a transparent account of previous interventions. Governance is not measured by the size of bond issuances but by measurable outcomes. The objective is not to float more bonds; it is to solve the problem.

“The National Assembly, the Auditor-General of the Federation and every institution charged with safeguarding public funds must insist on a comprehensive public audit of all power sector intervention funds raised under this administration. Nigerians deserve to know precisely how much has been borrowed, how much has been disbursed, who received the money, and why the debts continue to rise despite repeated claims of settlement.

“Darkness has become one of the most expensive commodities in Nigeria. The least Nigerians deserve is the truth.

“The Tinubu administration must understand that transparency is not an act of generosity; it is a constitutional obligation. Accountability is not optional. Public trust cannot be sustained on a diet of contradictory figures, shifting narratives and endless promises.

“Nigerians are tired of official declarations that dissolve upon contact with reality. They deserve a government that accounts for yesterday’s borrowing before asking them to underwrite tomorrow’s debt.

“History will not remember how many bonds this administration floated. It will remember whether those bonds brought light to Nigerian homes or merely deepened the darkness of official opacity,” Atiku stated.

Recall the Tinubu government had approved a N501 billion bond to clear power sector debts, however, the Gencos allege that the bond has yet to be disbursed.

FG: Oil Marketers Selling Above Market Price Will be Sanctioned

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has announced plans to sanction oil marketers selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at pump prices not reflective of the recent drop in global crude oil prices.

In a statement issued Wednesday, NMDPRA spokesperson George Ene-Ita stressed that petroleum product prices must remain cost-reflective in line with the Petroleum Industry Act.

He cautioned Oil Marketing Companies against price gouging and profiteering, noting that depots and retail outlets are under close monitoring.

“Regulatory sanctions will be applied where applicable,” Ene-Ita said, adding that the authority is working with security agencies and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to safeguard consumer interests.

The warning follows remarks by Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, who urged regulators to protect Nigerians from profiteering.

Lokpobiri noted that despite easing tensions between Iran and the United States, fuel prices in Nigeria have not reflected the global decline in crude oil costs.

He emphasized that while the sector is fully deregulated, regulators must ensure that deregulation does not become an avenue for exploitation.

Lokpobiri also highlighted that deregulation has paved the way for the operationalisation of the Dangote Refinery and other projects, ensuring product availability since 2023 despite global disruptions.

INEC to introduce downloadable PVCs, full online voter registration - Amupitan

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to introduce downloadable permanent voter cards (PVCs) for those who have misplaced or defaced their original cards.

Joash Amupitan, INEC chairman, spoke on Wednesday when Lanre Issa-Onilu, director-general of National Orientation Agency (NOA), paid a courtesy visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to NAN, Amupitan said the new technology was part of ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general election.

Amupitan said the downloadable PVC option will not be automatic or open to firm-time registrants who have never collected a physical card.

“It is not every PVC that is downloadable. You must have gotten your PVC before and it must be that the PVC is lost, defaced or if you cannot read your numbers there,” he said.

The INEC chairman noted that affected voters must formally lodge a complaint at least 90 days before an election to enable the commission to process the replacement.

Amupitan said the commission would pilot the downloadable PVC technology during the off-cycle Osun governorship election in August.

He said INEC was finalising work on a technology that would allow eligible citizens to complete their voter registration entirely online without visiting INEC offices for physical biometric capture.

“We have also been working on the technology that is going to make it possible for the registration of voters online without even having to visit INEC local government or registration areas,” Amupitan said.

“So hopefully in the next few days, we will be testing it as soon as the commission approves it.”

He added that the advancements were aimed at eliminating the feeling of disenfranchisement among citizens and ensuring that everyone who desired to register could do so seamlessly.

Court grants Peter Obi leave to serve Kenneth Okonkwo through substituted means in N8bn ‘defamation’ suit

A high court in Anambra state has granted Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), leave to serve court processes on Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), through substituted means in an N8 billion “defamation” suit.

D.A. Onyefulu, presiding judge, gave the order on Tuesday after hearing an ex parte application filed by Chisom Ibemesi, Obi’s counsel,

The judge granted the application after considering an affidavit showing that efforts by the court bailiff to personally serve the processes on Okonkwo were unsuccessful.

The court ordered that the writ of summons, accompanying processes and all subsequent court documents be served by pasting them at the defendant’s residence in Nsukka, Enugu State, or by delivering them to any adult at the address.

“Leave is granted to the Plaintiff/Applicant to serve the Writ of Summons and other accompanying processes and all other subsequent processes in this suit on the Defendant by substituted means to wit; by pasting said processes at the Defendant’s home address – NPR 48 Ofuluonu, Nsukka, Enugu State (close to Ijeoma Fishing Company, Ofuluonu, Nsukka, Enugu State) or by serving same on any adult at the Defendant’s home address…” the order reads.

Onyefulu also ordered that “service to be photographed and put in court’s file to show due compliance with orders of the court”.

The order is to be carried out within seven days.

Obi filed the defamation suit after accusing Okonkwo of making defamatory remarks about him during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

In the interview, Okonkwo alleged that Obi and the south-east caucus of the NDC demanded bribes from house of representatives and senate hopefuls of the party in return for tickets.

The ADC chieftain alleged that Obunike Ohaegbu, NDC aspirant for house of representatives ticket in Anambra, sent in a message alleging Obi scammed him to the tune of N10 million.

Ohaegbu later appeared on the same television programme to deny allegations that Obi collected N10 million as bribe from him.

Subsequently, Obi threatened a lawsuit against Okonkwo over alleged defamatory comments, demanding a retraction, an apology published in two national newspapers, and the sum of N5 billion “as general, aggravated and exemplary damages for the grave injury occasioned to his hard-earned reputation”.

Okonkwo, however, declined the demands, that his remarks were based on facts and constituted fair comment on matters of public interest.

Okonkwo had served as one of the spokespersons for Obi’s campaign council when the former governor was presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2023 election.

CBN limits suspension of payment obligations involving troubled banks to two days

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued new guidance limiting the suspension of payment obligations involving troubled banks and other financial institutions to a maximum period of two business days.

This means the regulator can suspend payment obligations in which a troubled bank is party to for only two days.

In a circular dated July 1 and addressed to all banks and other financial institutions, the apex bank said the clarification is intended to remove uncertainty surrounding the implementation of Sections 34(2)(b) and 40(2) of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA), 2020.

Section 34(2) (b) of the BOFIA, 2020 allows the CBN governor to suspend any payment or delivery obligations under any contract to which a failing bank is a party, while Section 40(2) empowers him to suspend the right of counterparties to terminate certain financial contracts involving a bank that is under resolution.

In the latest circular, the regulator said the absence of a defined maximum duration for exercising the powers granted under the provisions had created uncertainty for counterparties dealing with Nigerian banks, with the potential to hinder effective commercial risk management.

According to the circular, where the CBN suspends payment or delivery obligations under an affected contract involving a failing bank, or temporarily prevents the termination of financial contracts during the resolution of a troubled financial institution, such suspension must not exceed two business days.

“The suspension of any payment or delivery obligation under an Affected Contract, pursuant to Section 34(2)(b) of the BOFIA, in relation to a failing bank or other financial institution; and the exercise of any termination right under an Affected Contract to which Section 40(1) of the BOFIA applies, pursuant to Section 40(2) of the BOFIA in relation to a Classified as Confidential bank or other financial institution that is a subject or proposed subject of a resolution measure, shall not exceed a period of two business days commencing from the date on which the written order or notice of suspension is issued by the CBN Governor,” the circular reads.

The apex bank said the guidance applies to all “affected contracts” — defined as contracts involving a bank or other financial institution that fall within the scope of Sections 34(2)(b) or 40(2) of BOFIA.

The CBN said the circular, issued pursuant to its powers under BOFIA and the Act, takes immediate effect.

12 dead as floods, landslides wreak havoc in Côte d’Ivoire

No fewer than 12 people have died after days of heavy rainfall triggered flooding and landslides in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Belmonde Dogo, Côte d’Ivoire’s minister of social cohesion, said the continuous rainfall that began on the night of June 27 has left a trail of destruction across Abidjan and surrounding areas.

“The consequences of the continuous rainfall that has hit Abidjan and its surroundings since the night of June 27 are becoming clear,” Dogo said in a Facebook post.

She said more than a dozen deaths had been recorded in the Attecoube and Yopougon districts, including nine people from the same neighbourhood.

Videos and photographs shared on social media showed flooded roads, submerged vehicles, and neighbourhoods inundated by rising water.

Flooding is a recurring challenge in Abidjan, a city of more than six million people, where rapid urbanisation has fuelled the expansion of informal settlements in flood-prone communities.

The latest disaster comes as several coastal West African countries grapple with widespread flooding driven by heavy rainfall.

In Ghana, at least 13 people were killed after torrential rains triggered severe flooding in parts of Accra, the capital, disrupting transport, submerging homes, and forcing residents to flee affected communities.

Nigeria is also experiencing widespread flooding, with heavy rainfall inundating parts of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Abia, Cross River, Delta, and other states. Roads have become impassable in several locations, vehicles have been submerged, homes flooded, and thousands of commuters stranded.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of above-normal rainfall and flash flooding in several states during the 2026 rainy season, while the federal government also identified dozens of states as being at risk of flooding.

The recurring floods across the region have renewed concerns over the growing impacts of climate change, poor urban planning, inadequate drainage infrastructure, and the increasing vulnerability of densely populated settlements to extreme weather events.

Oyo teachers suspend strike over abducted schoolchildren

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended the indefinite strike in Oyo state following a directive from its national leadership.

A statement issued on Wednesday by Hassan Fatai, chairman of the Oyo state chapter of the NUT, and Olukayode Salami, the union’s secretary, said the decision followed a review of the security situation and appeals by the Oyo state government and other stakeholders.

“This is to officially convey to all Public Primary and Secondary School Teachers in Oyo State that the National Leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), having reviewed the prevailing situation and following constructive engagements with the Oyo State Government and public appeal by the government and other critical stakeholders, has directed the suspension of the withdrawal of services earlier embarked upon over the abduction of teachers and learners in Oriire Local Government of the State,” the statement reads.

“Consequently, all teachers in public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State are hereby directed to resume their official duties and lawfully discharge their responsibilities as from Thursday, 2nd July, 2026.”

The union said the decision was reached in the collective interest of the public following assurances by the state government that continuous efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the abductees.

According to the statement, other commitments made by the government include the establishment of a well-equipped Joint Security Task Force to conduct regular patrols of vulnerable schools and access routes.

The government also pledged continuous engagement with the families of victims, provision of psychosocial support and rehabilitation for rescued teachers and learners, as well as payment of gratuities and other entitlements to the families of deceased teachers.

The union said the government also promised to sustain public sensitisation on safe school initiatives and early warning mechanisms, as well as strengthen security training and emergency response systems.

Others include addressing ungoverned spaces that harbour criminal elements; improving school infrastructure; tackling the root causes of insecurity, including illegal mining and open grazing encroachment into forest reserves; strengthening community intelligence and collaboration with security agencies; ensuring swift justice for criminal elements while improving the welfare of security personnel; and deploying technology and effective information management to enhance school security.

The union commended its members for the understanding, solidarity, discipline and total compliance demonstrated during the period of the withdrawal of services.

“Your unwavering commitment to the directives of the Union has further strengthened our collective voice in pursuing the welfare, wellbeing, safety and security of teachers and learners,” the statement said.

“While resuming academic activities, members are enjoined to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and cooperate with school authorities and security agencies by promptly reporting any security concerns within their respective communities.”

The union noted its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of its members, adding that it will continue to engage with the government until all outstanding concerns are satisfactorily addressed.

BACKGROUND

The NUT, in a circular dated May 29, directed all teachers in the state to withdraw their services indefinitely over the May 15 abduction of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers in the Oriire LGA.

Gunmen had raided three schools across communities in the council, killing a motorcyclist and the assistant headmaster of one of the schools.

The incident triggered nationwide protests by teachers and school principals on June 2, days after the bandits killed Michael Oyedokun, one of the abducted teachers, while in captivity.

In response to the nationwide outrage, President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of 1,000 forest guards and special security forces for the rescue of the abductees.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licences of 46 microfinance banks (MFBs), citing their failure to meet regulatory requirements for continued operation.

In a statement on Wednesday by Hakama Sidi-Ali, acting director of corporate communications, the apex bank said the revocation took effect from July 1, 2026, in line with Sections 12 and 13 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA), 2020.

The CBN said the action was approved by Olayemi Cardoso, the apex bank governor, as part of efforts to safeguard the stability of the financial system, protect depositors and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

“According to the revocation order, the action became necessary because of one or more of the circumstances :Insufficient assets to meet liabilities, closure of operations without the CBN approval, Inactivity and cessation of financial intermediation, failure to commence operations within 12 months of licence approval, and failure to maintain minimum capital funds unimpaired by losses,” CBN said.

“The revocation of the licences is part of the Bank’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the stability of the financial sector, protect depositors, and ensure that licensed institutions comply with current laws and regulatory requirements,” the statement reads.

CBN added that it remains committed to promoting a safe, sound and resilient financial system and would continue to take supervisory and regulatory actions where necessary to maintain public confidence in Nigeria’s financial sector.

“Gbajabiamila is a saint compared to the mountain of corruption cases that define Atiku Abubakar’s public life. While we support thorough investigation into any allegation, Atiku lacks the moral standing to lecture anyone on integrity.

“His call is nothing but political mischief aimed at distracting Nigerians from his own tainted history. The Arewa Youth Integrity Forum will not sit idly by while a serial controversy magnet pretends to be a crusader,” the statement said.

The Forum noted that unproven allegations against sitting officials should not be weaponized by opposition figures with far more damaging records.

AYIF pointed to Atiku’s tenure as Vice President, from 1999 to 2007, during which he faced multiple graft accusations, including a Senate probe that recommended his prosecution for allegedly diverting over $145 million from the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, PTDF, to companies linked to him.

The youth forum described Atiku’s latest intervention as selective outrage, especially given his history of alleged involvement in high-profile international scandals.

AYIF called on the former VP to first address the many questions surrounding his own wealth accumulation while in public office.

“Atiku was banned from entering the United States for years due to corruption concerns. Reports detailed how over $40 million in suspect funds, including bribe payments from Siemens, were allegedly moved through accounts linked to him and his wife.

“How does a man with such baggage have the audacity to call for the suspension of a serving official? This is the height of hypocrisy.

“Nigerians remember the William Jefferson bribery scandal where Atiku was implicated as the target of a $100,000 bribe attempt to influence Nigerian contracts,” the statement said.

The AYIF emphasised that while the allegations against Gbajabiamila deserve scrutiny, they should not overshadow the broader context of Atiku’s repeated brushes with anti-corruption agencies and international investigators.

The Forum recalled audio recordings released by a former aide alleging Atiku’s use of Special Purpose Vehicles, SPVs, to siphon public funds, including N100 million from ecological funds, further tarnishing his image.

AYIF noted that Atiku’s pattern of controversies, from PTDF fund diversions to offshore money laundering allegations, makes him unfit to dictate standards of governance.

The statement added, “Atiku’s public record is littered with allegations of abuse of office, embezzlement, and conflict of interest. From NICOTES/INTELS business dealings while in customs service to the litany of Senate indictments, his history speaks volumes.

An early morning raid on Sai Community in Mbajir Council Ward, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State left scores of residents dead and many others injured.

Witnesses said the assailants struck around 2 a.m., moving from house to house while shooting indiscriminately.

Survivors fled into the bush, and by daybreak, youths recovered at least 10 bodies. Several injured victims were rushed to hospitals in Katsina-Ala.

The Benue Police Command has yet to issue an official statement, as calls to the Police Public Relations Officer went unanswered.Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack, describing it as a “senseless assault on innocent citizens.”

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Alia directed security agencies to deploy additional personnel to Sai and surrounding communities to prevent further incursions.

Court grants Alison-Madueke’s plea to present UK acquittal judgment in EFCC case

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted an application filed by former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, to present evidence of her acquittal by the Southwark Crown Court in London, UK.

Justice Inyang Ekwo granted the motion on notice moved by Diezani’s lawyer, Godwin Iyinbor, which was not challenged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, counsel, Mofesomo Oyetibo, SAN.

The UK court had, on June 17, discharged and acquitted the ex-minister in respect of criminal allegations of bribery brought against her.

Diezani had, in a suit filed before Justice Ekwo, sought to reclaim her forfeited assets.

In the amended originating motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/21/2023, she sued the EFCC as sole respondent.

When the case was called on Wednesday, Iyinbor and Oyetibo regularised their processes.

Iyinbor, therefore, sought the leave of the court to move a motion on notice which was filed on June 25.

He said the motion sought the permission to file a further/supplementary affidavit for the purpose of bringing fresh and material development with respect to Diezani’s acquittal by the UK court.

According to him, the application also sought an order to deem the affidavit as being properly filed.

Oyetibo acknowledged being served with the application.

The EFCC’s lawyer said the motion was intended to waste the judicial time of the court.

“They just want to bring to your lordship’s attention that the applicant has been exonerated in the UK,” Oyetibo said.

But Justice Ekwo asked if he planned to oppose it or not, and the lawyer said they were not objecting to the application.

The judge consequently granted the motion as prayed and adjourned the matter until October 6 for hearing.

The judge held that on the next adjourned date, the preliminary objection and the substantive suit shall be taken together.

Fuel price reduction: Nigerian petrol marketers threaten nationwide shutdown

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, has threatened to shut down its filling stations nationwide over pressure from the federal government to implement price controls.

The spokesperson of IPMAN, Chinedu Ukadike, made this known in a recent interview.

Recall that the minister of petroleum resources (oil), Heineken Olokpobiri, had called on the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to clamp down on petroleum product marketers exploiting fuel consumers.

Earlier, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission had ordered and also expressed similar concerns on Sunday in a statement, warning fuel marketers against exploitative petrol prices.

The position by Nigerian government authorities comes as Brent and West Texas Intermediate fall to $72 and 69 per barrel, up from over $100 per barrel due to Iran, United States-Israel conflict easing.

However, fuel prices in Nigeria remain high despite the recent petrol price reduction by the Dangote refinery and filling station.

In Abuja, for instance, fuel is currently sold between N1210 and N1300 per liter in most filling stations.

But the recent drop in fuel price is not commensurate with the level of crude oil price decline.

This is why Nigerian government authorities had warned marketers against exploitative fuel pricing.

Reacting to this, Ukadike threatened that petroleum product marketers would shut down their retail outlets if the federal government tried to enforce price control despite the sector being deregulated in line with the Petroleum Industry Act.

He lamented that in the past weeks, marketers have lost between N10 and N15 billion due to fuel price reductions.

“Capital is hard to gather. There is no buffer area for marketers. Most of us are losing N10 to N15 billion due to the recent fuel price reduction. You buy at a particular price before you get to your station; the price had further reduced. We sell at a loss to be competitive. If you don’t sell at a competitive price, nobody will buy.

“Marketers will shut down if they try somehow to enforce price control. We are going to shut down our stations nationwide. You can’t be regulating a deregulated market. You can’t tell me how much to sell my product without trying to know how much I bought it.

“You can’t be blowing hot and cold at the same time. The Petroleum Industry Act must be followed to the letter. If they try to enforce price control, we will shut down,” Ukadike said.

Court Fixes July 6 for Definite Hearing in Delta South APC Senatorial Ticket Dispute

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled July 6, 2026, for the definite hearing of a high-stakes legal battle over the authentic winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Delta South Senatorial District.

The suit pits Prince Michael Diden, former Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), against Senator Joel Onowakpo, the current Senator representing Delta South.

At Wednesday’s proceedings, counsel to Prince Diden, Bankole Joel Akomolafe, SAN, informed the court of his readiness to proceed with the hearing.

He, however, raised concerns that the statement of defence filed by Senator Onowakpo’s counsel, Barrister Habeed Lawal, was only recently served on him, despite being filed on June 24. He requested a short adjournment to file his reply.

Presiding Judge, Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, intervened and, with the consensus of all parties, adjourned the matter to July 6 for definite hearing.

The judge directed that all necessary processes be filed and exchanged before the adjourned date, and that fresh hearing notices be properly served on all parties to avoid any delays.

Prince Michael Diden, who filed the suit on May 30, 2026 (suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1094/2026), is seeking a court declaration that he is the rightful winner of the May 18, 2026 direct primary for the 2027 senatorial election. He claims he scored the highest number of valid votes.

Diden alleges that Senator Onowakpo manipulated the process by announcing forged results and prematurely declaring himself the winner through the media and a viral video, contrary to the official collation and announcement procedures set by the APC National Working Committee, which were to be conducted in Abuja.

According to court papers, Diden claims he defeated Onowakpo with a wide margin, polling 96,893 votes against Onowakpo’s 31,918 votes, based on authentic ward results from the eight local government areas in the district.

He is praying the court to declare him the APC candidate for the 2027 general election, direct the APC to forward his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and compel INEC to accept his candidature.

At the Wednesday sitting, Lukman Fagbemi, SAN, represented the APC, while INEC was not represented despite being served with hearing notices.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State, to serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2026 Jigawa Investment Summit, which runs from July 1 to 2.

Upon landing at the Nuhu Muhammad Sunusi International Airport, Shettima was warmly received by Governor Umar Namadi, Deputy Governor Aminu Gumel, Kano State Deputy Governor Murtala Garo, Minister of State for Education Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, and other senior government officials.

The two-day summit, themed “Unlocking Opportunities: Driving Sustainable Growth for a Better Jigawa,” aims to highlight the state’s vast economic potential to both local and international investors.

It underscores the state government’s strong push toward economic transformation, investment promotion, and job creation.

Shettima is expected to officially declare the summit open and lead high-level discussions with policymakers, development partners, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, and industry leaders.

Focus areas include agriculture, renewable energy, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), light manufacturing, education, and healthcare.

Jigawa State Commissioner for Information, Sagir Musa, emphasized the state’s readiness to attract investments.

He highlighted its peaceful business environment, fertile agricultural land, energetic youth population, and improving infrastructure as key attractions for investors.

The summit reflects Jigawa’s determination to drive agricultural transformation, harness alternative energy sources, boost MSMEs as engines of industrialization, and strengthen public-private partnerships in critical sectors like education and health.

President Bola Tinubu has announced that, as part of the newly approved reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the scheme will henceforth be headed by a civilian Director-General instead of a military officer.

The President also disclosed that the NYSC orientation programme will be extended to six weeks, with every corps member expected to complete the scheme better equipped for employment, entrepreneurship and national service.

Recall that the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, alongside the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, briefed journalists after Monday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on the far-reaching reforms approved for the NYSC, which was established in 1973.

In a post on his verified X account, @ABAT, on Wednesday, President Tinubu said his administration is repositioning the NYSC into a platform for national development while strengthening its governance, standards and dignity.

He wrote: “On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973.

“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise.

“For 53 years, the NYSC has served the cause of national unity. That mission remains important and must be preserved.

“But the Nigeria of today demands more. Our young people are nearly 70 per cent of our population. They are not a burden to be managed. They are the engine of the one-trillion-dollar economy we are building and the hope of this nation.”

Explaining the rationale behind the reforms, the President said the government is transforming the NYSC from a mobilisation scheme into a national development platform focused on skills acquisition, employability, productivity, and entrepreneurship.

“The NYSC orientation programme will now become a six-week journey.

“It will begin with civic responsibility, leadership, values and personal development. It will then move into career readiness, entrepreneurship, digital and financial skills. Finally, corps members will receive specialised training aligned with their academic background and career pathway.

“These streams will include agriculture, health, education, technology, law, public service, infrastructure, the green economy, enterprise, the creative economy, and paramilitary/security service.

“Every corps member must leave NYSC better prepared for work, enterprise and national service.”

On the safety of corps members, Tinubu said deployment to security-challenged states would be based on risk assessment.

“We are also making the NYSC Scheme safer and smarter.

“Deployment to security-challenged states will be guided by risk assessment. It will prioritise indigenes, residents, and graduates of institutions in those states, as well as those from neighbouring states within the same geopolitical zone.

“The call-up process will become technology-driven, and primary assignments will be better aligned with each corps member’s skills, academic background and career stream.”

The President further stated that the scheme would now be led by a civilian Director-General, supported by three Executive Directors, including a Security Services Executive Director, who would be a military or paramilitary officer.

“Our administration is also strengthening governance, standards and the dignity of the NYSC Scheme.

“The NYSC will be led by a civilian Director-General, supported by three Executive Directors, including a Security Services Executive Director, who will be a military or paramilitary officer.

“Orientation camps will be assessed under a national grading and certification framework, while states will be expected to meet minimum standards.

“The Passing-Out Parade will become a Graduation Ceremony because our corps members will no longer merely complete service. They will graduate as trained civic and professional contributors to national development.”

President Tinubu commended the officials involved in developing the reform package.

“I commend the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande; my Special Adviser on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman; the Federal Ministry of Education; and the members of the Reform Committee for their work.

“I have directed the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Federal Ministry of Justice to commence the process of amending the NYSC Act and subsidiary regulations.

“To every young Nigerian: this nation believes in you. We are building a country worthy of your talent, your ambition and your future.”
