Ghana Delays Plans to Evacuate 800 Citizens from South Africa

Ghana said Thursday it has delayed the evacuation of more than 800 of its citizens from South Africa after a viral video showing the alleged assault of a Ghanaian man triggered outrage.

The footage showing the attack on Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian living in South Africa, circulated widely on social media during the latest wave of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in the country.

The Ghanaian foreign ministry said earlier this month that it was evacuating citizens from South Africa as a result.

Some 800 Ghanaians were to be evacuated starting Thursday, but the process was delayed because of the large numbers of evacuees and legal clearance procedures required by South Africa, the ministry said.

“Considering the numbers involved and the South African legal conditions that have to be met, including mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination and flight permits, the planned evacuation has been deferred by a few days,” the ministry said.

It said that Ghanaian and South African authorities had agreed to accelerate the process.

Only one Ghanaian showed up at South Africa’s O.R. Tambo international airport on Thursday, AFP journalists at the airport reported.

The Ghana government has promised to give those it is evacuating from South Africa a re-integration financial package and psycho-social support.

The latest tensions have revived uncomfortable debates across Africa about xenophobia, migration, and the gap between pan-African rhetoric and realities facing African migrants on the continent.

Ghana has increasingly pushed for the issue to receive broader continental attention and has tabled concerns around xenophobic violence within African Union discussions, arguing that recurring attacks threaten African integration and free movement ambitions under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Asamoah, the man in the viral video, has since returned safely to Ghana.

Police Uncover 119 Rounds of Ammunition Hidden Near Cemetery in Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command has recovered 119 rounds of live ammunition concealed near a cemetery in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of the state.

Police spokesperson DSP Buhari Abdullahi confirmed the discovery in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said operatives acted on credible intelligence and recovered the ammunition at about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday along Kalshingi Road in Kwadon, hidden inside a sack under a tree near the cemetery.

In addition to the 119 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, officers found two empty ammunition sacks, two bottles containing moringa seeds, and one green bag at the scene.

A search of the surrounding bush and area yielded no suspects, according to the police. The command has since intensified surveillance and patrols in the vicinity as investigations continue to track down those responsible for hiding the ammunition.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election at Ward E3 on Lagos Island, describing the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and reflective of internal party democracy.

Sanwo-Olu, who arrived at the polling venue with his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, said the direct primary process allowed party members at the ward level to freely participate in the emergence of the party’s governorship candidate.

Speaking after casting his vote, the governor commended the conduct of the exercise and the turnout of party faithful.

“This process shows that our party believes in democracy and inclusiveness.

“I have confidence in Dr Hamzat’s capacity, competence and understanding of governance in Lagos State.

Morris Monye, a former Director of Mobilization for the Obidient Movement, has issued a public apology to Peter Obi and members of the movement over his earlier criticism and resignation letter.

In an open letter posted on his verified X account on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Monye described his previous actions as driven by “frustration and immaturity.” He admitted that his resignation statement had unfairly dragged Obi, whom he continues to respect for his vision, integrity, and sacrifice for Nigeria.

“I made statements that subtly and unnecessarily dragged Peter Obi... That was wrong. It was childish, and beneath the standard I should have upheld,” Monye wrote.

He took full responsibility for the letter, noting that it was written and released without external influence. Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has clinched the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress for a second term after emerging as the party’s sole candidate in a unanimous affirmation by delegates from all 225 wards across the state.

The affirmation, held on Thursday at the Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi, turned into a massive show of support for the governor, popularly known as “Kauran Gwandu,” as party faithful endorsed his return for the 2027 governorship election.

Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee, Abdulmalik Mahmud, said the committee arrived in Kebbi only to formalise a decision already taken by party members across the state.

“Our work here is very simple because the people of Kebbi, especially APC members, have already decided,” Mahmud declared.

He said the presence of representatives from all 225 wards was a strong indication of unity and confidence in the governor’s leadership.

JAMB Releases 279 Previously Withheld Results

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has released 279 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results that had earlier been withheld for further investigation.

The board’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, confirmed the development on X on Thursday, noting that the latest release was in addition to results previously published by the board.

According to Benjamin, the releases followed a painstaking review of cases flagged for suspected examination malpractice.

“While some results have been outrightly cancelled where evidence of malpractice was established, others have been released where the Board found no prima facie case against the affected candidates.

“Results from centres where the Board’s live monitoring team observed suspicious activities, or where adverse reports were received, remain withheld pending further investigation. Where sufficient evidence of culpability is established, such results will be cancelled,” he said.

The board advised candidates yet to access their results to check their status by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 via the same phone number used during registration.

The 2026 UTME held between April 16 and 25 across accredited computer-based test centres nationwide.

Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, noted that this will help to reduce over dependence on foreign drugs and support local production.

Ladoja also called on pharmacists to integrate and collaborate with local herbal practitioners, saying this will help to reduce dependence on foreign medicines.

He said, “How can we collaborate to ensure we use local herbs with the modern ones to ensure better results? From my experience, I have a friend whose child has an ailment. He was treated. It is effective and efficient. It has been tested.

In his address, the president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, in Oyo, Victor Ajanaku, called on the federal government to implement policies that will encourage local production of drugs.

He said “Local production of drugs, it is not even production. Government policies do not give pharmacists approval for local production of drugs.

“It is until the government makes favourable policies, that is when we can have local production of drugs. The government should make the enabling environment to encourage us. Because there are some hindrances.”

EFCC Invites Osun SUPEB Chairman over Grants Management Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has invited the Executive Chairman of the Osun State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Ibukun Fadipe, for questioning over issues surrounding the management of Federal Government counterpart grants and the alleged utilisation of intervention funds.

The invitation was contained in a letter dated May 19, 2026, and signed by the EFCC Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol.

According to the letter, “Fadipe was directed to appear at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on May 26, 2026.”

The anti-graft agency stated that “the investigation concerns the utilisation of counterpart grants and execution of projects under the Universal Basic Education Commission scheme in Osun State from 2024 to date.”

The EFCC cited Section 38 (1) and (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Establishment Act, 2004, as the basis for the invitation.

According to the letter with reference number CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/PFS/HQ/TA/OSU/VOL.17/322, “the commission requested details on eight issues connected to the grants and projects.”

Among the documents requested are “evidence of counterpart funds submitted to UBEC for matching grants from 2024 to date, action plans and utilisation guidelines, and records of projects executed with the funds.”

The EFCC also requested “records of contracts awarded under the grants, including letters of award, contract agreements, payment details and bank information linked to the transactions.”

Other documents requested include the status of projects, payment vouchers, approvals and all relevant records submitted to UBEC before the disbursement of funds.

The letter stated, “You are requested to report in person with the requested information/documents for an interview with the undersigned through the Head, Procurement Fraud Section, on Tuesday, 26th May, 2026 at the Commission’s Headquarters, Plot 301/302 Institutions and Research District, Abuja by 1000 hours.”

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has said that leaders before President Bola Tinubu lacked the courage to take tough decisions needed to reset Nigeria’s economy.

Alake made the remarks on Thursday in Abuja while speaking at the 2026 NRS-MSMD Joint Stakeholder Sensitization Forum (North Central), themed “From Resource to Revenue: Aligning Solid Minerals Operations with the 2025 Tax Reform Act.”

The minister traced the nation’s economic challenges to a societal shift from local production in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s to a heavy import-dependent consumptive culture.

This, he said, led to the closure of factories, massive job losses, and the weakening of the naira.He recalled that in the early 1980s, the official exchange rate was $1 to 52 kobos, while the black market rate was $1 to 80 kobos.

“We were importing everything importable, including toothpicks and orange juice things we could produce internally and were producing before when our currency was strong,” Alake said.

He criticised past leadership for failing to address these challenges, resulting in excessive borrowing to pay salaries and the printing of over ₦20 trillion in local currency, which further damaged the economy.

Dr Alake praised the Tinubu administration for demonstrating the needed courage to implement difficult reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023, which he said prevented a total collapse of the economy.

“What would have happened to Nigeria by September 2023 if the president had not removed fuel subsidy? The economy would have crashed completely,” he stated.

He described the ongoing reforms as necessary steps to stop further economic decline, block leakages, reset the economy, and change the nation’s mindset and values.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Engr. Faruk Yusuf Yabo, also spoke at the event, stressing the need to reposition the solid minerals sector for economic diversification, job creation, and revenue optimisation through compliance with the 2025 Tax Reform Act.

Fubara Loyalists React as ADC Faults APC Over Governance Crisis

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the sudden withdrawal of key aspirants from the Rivers State governorship race, with supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressing disappointment and feelings of abandonment.

Some Fubara loyalists questioned why the governor encouraged them to align with him only to step down, accusing him of failing to confront the political influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In viral videos circulating online, aggrieved supporters claimed they had been left without direction amid the unfolding political crisis.

On the other hand, supporters of Wike were seen celebrating the development, praising the minister’s political strength and declaring that “no one can reap where he did not sow."

The mood across Rivers State remained largely subdued on Thursday following the announcements.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rejected claims that it is obstructing any aspirant from purchasing nomination forms, insisting that the process remains open and transparent.

The party's Interim National Working Committee stated it is not aware of any official hindrance preventing interested individuals from accessing the forms.

It attributed recent adjustments to the timetable to efforts aimed at accommodating more aspirants.

This position was made public by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, on Thursday.

According to the party, the revised timetable now extends the deadline for the purchase and submission of completed nomination forms to Friday, May 22, 2026.

Screening for late applicants will hold on Saturday, May 23, 2026.The PDP also addressed concerns regarding its zoning arrangement, which favours the southern region for the presidential ticket.

While acknowledging the zoning decision by the National Executive Committee, the party stressed that it does not bar qualified Nigerians from exercising their constitutional right to aspire.

“It is worth mentioning that though the National Executive Committee of our party had long ago zoned the Presidential ticket to aspirants from the southern part of Nigeria, the right to aspire is a constitutional provision which cannot be circumscribed by directional agreements like zoning.”

The party urged Nigerians to disregard reports suggesting exclusion or manipulation in the process, emphasising that nomination forms remain available within the approved timeframe.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, has lambasted the spokesperson of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa over his recent remarks on their leader, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, reminding Bature that he lacks the standing, authority and proximity to speak on matters concerning the political decisions, alliances or consultations of the movement.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Movement, Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed said their attention was drawn to the reckless, contradictory and politically desperate comments by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Kano State Government, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, during his appearance on Arise TV.

He said, “Ordinarily, such confused political speculation would not deserve a response, but considering the deliberate attempt to mislead the public and distort the political realities in Kano and Nigeria, it has become necessary to set the record straight.

“First, it is both shocking and embarrassing that a government spokesperson could go on national television to openly promote rumours, assumptions and fabricated political gossip as official communication. One moment, he claims Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the next moment, he says Kwankwaso has thrown the opposition into disarray. These contradictions clearly expose the confusion within their camp.”

He argued that if Kwankwaso is politically irrelevant as they want Nigerians to believe, why then is the entire machinery of government obsessed with his movements, meetings and political decisions on a daily basis?

“The truth is simple: the growing acceptance of the Kwankwasiyya Movement across Nigeria has unsettled many political actors who now see Sen. Kwankwaso as one of the most strategic and influential political leaders in the country today.

The attack on three schools in the Ahoro-Esinle/Yawota axis of Ogbomoso in Oriire Local Government Area led to the killing of no fewer than two persons and the abduction of about 30 teachers and students.

Reports claiming the release of the abducted teachers and students have gone viral since Wednesday night.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, announced the deployment of more detectives from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, to collaborate with the joint security team to secure the release of the abducted teachers and students.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Wednesday called for a “careful, clinical and timely” operation to rescue the students and teachers abducted from the three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Also, the Defence Headquarters, in a statement on Tuesday, said troops had made contact with the abductors and were working to ensure the rescue of the kidnapped students and teachers.

2027: Back Tinubu or risk losing federal projects – Umahi tells South-East

He disclosed that the Federal Government had already released 50 percent funding for the project, while approvals were being processed for the dualisation of critical sections of the route.

The minister further explained that section two of the corridor, stretching about 178 kilometres from the Ebonyi–Benue boundary through Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa states to Oweto Bridge, carries a contract value of N685 billion.

While acknowledging funding challenges facing contractors, Umahi maintained that the Federal Government remained committed to meeting its obligations.

“The President has assured us that all contractors owed will be paid. Today, there is hardly any state in Nigeria without a construction site under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

Umahi said communities benefitting from federal projects should reciprocate by supporting Tinubu in the next election.

“Last time, Afikpo people did not vote for APC. If they want this bridge completed, I will require 100 per cent of the votes. I am not asking for 99 per cent,” he declared.

According to him, projects of such magnitude could only be executed through federal intervention.

“Only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can build these roads and bridges. Past politicians used this bridge as campaign promises, but this President came and started the work without making noise about it,” he added.

Umahi argued that the South-East had regained relevance in national politics under the current administration, citing his appointment as Minister of Works and the scale of projects spread across the region.

“We shouted marginalisation before, but Today no ministry is bigger than the Ministry of Works, and it is being headed by an Igbo man. The President has integrated the South-East into the mainstream of Nigerian politics,” he said.

The minister urged political leaders in the region to publicly support the President and sensitise residents about the administration’s achievements.

“I challenge all leaders supporting the President to speak out openly. Our people need to hear the truth about what this administration is doing in the South-East,” he stated.

According to the letter, obtained by PUNCH in Jos on Thursday, Zi had duly paid for his nomination and expression of interest forms and had participated in the screening process for the Plateau North Senatorial District.

“The publication portraying me as ‘not cleared’ without justification has greatly injured my reputation, subjected me to public ridicule, and destabilised my supporters and political structure across Plateau North Senatorial District and beyond,” Zi stated.

He further noted that the publication caused significant embarrassment to his legal career, political ambition, and public standing.

As a result, Zi announced his withdrawal from the ongoing primary, conditional on the party issuing an immediate retraction, public apology, and compensation.

He demanded N10 billion as damages for defamation, reputational harm, and emotional distress.

“Failure to comply with this demand within a reasonable time shall leave me with no option than to seek legal redress against the party and all persons connected with the publication,” he warned.

The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Mrs Grace Ogunleye, has been rescued unhurt after being kidnapped by suspected hoodlums.

The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the successful rescue on Thursday, attributing the breakthrough to a coordinated joint operation involving the police, military, and other security agencies, alongside local security personnel.

Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, in a statement, said Ogunleye was abducted on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti Road. Her vehicle was later found abandoned, and her phone was switched off.

“The kidnapped Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Mrs Grace Ogunleye, who was allegedly kidnapped on 20th May, 2026 by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums, has been rescued unhurt,” the statement read.

Abutu added that the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the motive and identify those behind the abduction.

The rescue comes amid heightened security concerns in the area. On April 28, 2026, unknown gunmen attacked a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo within the same local government, killing a pastor and abducting about 15 worshippers, who are still in captivity.

Security agencies have assured residents of continued efforts to rescue the remaining victims and restore safety in the region.

Governor Dikko Radda has been affirmed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Katsina State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The affirmation exercise took place on Thursday at the People’s Square in Katsina, where delegates and party supporters gathered in a show of unity.

Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee from the national headquarters, Yakubu Maccido, who supervised the process, announced that Governor Radda secured the endorsement through a voice vote.

He noted that the decision followed a unanimous agreement among state stakeholders.

ASUU threatens fresh strike over unimplemented agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Sokoto Zone, has warned of a possible industrial crisis in Nigeria’s public universities over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to fully implement agreements reached with the union.

The union issued the warning during a press conference in Sokoto on Thursday, accusing both federal and state governments of neglecting critical welfare and funding issues affecting lecturers and public universities.

Speaking at the briefing, the ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Abubakar Sabo, said delays in implementing the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement were creating tension across campuses and threatening industrial harmony.

According to him, despite the agreement being publicly signed in January 2026, the government had yet to inaugurate the Implementation Monitoring Committee, leading to delays and inconsistencies in implementation across universities.

“The continued delay in addressing these issues is capable of provoking avoidable industrial unrest in the university system,” Sabo said.

He stated that several universities had yet to implement the agreed 40 per cent salary increment linked to Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances, CATA, Earned Academic Allowances and Professorial Allowances.

ASUU also listed unresolved issues affecting lecturers to include arrears of the 25–35 per cent salary award, promotion arrears, salary shortfalls linked to the IPPIS platform, withheld salaries from the 2022 strike action and delayed pension payments for retired academics.

The union further raised concerns over conditions in some state-owned universities, including unpaid allowances, non-remittance of deductions and union dues, non-payment of annual increments and the absence of governing councils in some institutions.

Beyond welfare issues, ASUU criticised the Federal Government’s proposed establishment of a Nigerian campus of Coventry University under the Transnational Education framework, warning that it could weaken local universities.

The union also opposed plans to phase out some humanities and social science courses, insisting that all academic disciplines remain important to national development.

ASUU further expressed concern over worsening insecurity across parts of Northern Nigeria, noting that banditry, kidnapping and communal violence were affecting academic activities in many institutions.

The union called on governments at all levels to address insecurity, poverty and unemployment, while urging authorities to fully implement agreements reached with university workers to avoid further crisis in the education sector.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigeria’s security chiefs to address insecurity immediately following the recent abduction of school pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the demand known in a statement on Wednesday.

Recall that at least 30 pupils and seven teachers were abducted by bandits from Community High School and L.A. Basic School, Ahoro Esinele, and First Baptist School (Nursery and Primary), Yawota, all in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Thereafter, one of the teachers was reportedly decapitated by the bandits.

The development has stirred reactions from Nigerians demanding immediate action to rescue the abducted pupils and teachers.

Reacting, the union said the Nigerian government at all levels must wake up.

“Our security agencies should do a thorough soul-searching. It is superfluous to say it is their sacred duty to protect lives and property. We believe where there is a will, there will be a way. Address this challenge before it is too late.

“We demand action now. We have had enough of sermons and condolence messages. For how long should we continue to bleed like this?” the labour union stated.

India Postpones Africa Summit Following Ebola Outbreak

India and the African Union have postponed a summit meeting due to take place next week in New Delhi after a deadly Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Mindful of the emerging public health situation on the continent… the two sides agreed that it would be advisable to convene the Fourth India–Africa Forum Summit at a later date,” India’s foreign ministry said.

The India–Africa Forum Summit had been scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 28–31.

India said it was ready “to contribute to Africa CDC-led (Centres for Disease Control) efforts aimed at addressing the evolving health situation”.

The World Health Organization said Wednesday that risk from a deadly Ebola outbreak is high in central Africa but remains low globally, adding that the virus had likely been spreading for months.

The outbreak of the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever was declared in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo Friday.

Ebola has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa in the past half-century.

The 17th Ebola outbreak to hit the DRC is already suspected of having caused 139 deaths from around 600 probable cases.

Delhi’s international airport on Thursday issued a health advisory for passengers arriving in India from DR Congo as well as neighbouring Uganda and South Sudan.

New Delhi, which stressed the importance of “continued cooperation in strengthening public health preparedness and response capacities across the continent”, said new dates for a summit would be set later.
