NCAA Orders Arrest of Air Peace Driver Over Alleged Runway Blockade

Security forces in Enugu State have arrested three suspects allegedly linked to the August 2 kidnapping at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inoyi-Affa, Udi Local Government Area.

The joint operation, involving the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Forest Guard, and other agencies, also recovered ransom money reportedly paid to the kidnappers.

Four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, and 133 rounds of ammunition were seized during the raid.One suspect was killed in a gun battle with operatives, while three others were arrested and paraded at the DSS headquarters in Enugu on Monday evening.

“The suspension is to enable the security agencies to carry out an unbiased investigation of allegations associating him with the assault on the Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Mr Simon Mudi, also known as Temple, at the Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, recently,” the statement read.

The development followed the circulation of a video showing Mudi being chased and repeatedly struck with bottles and chairs during a political meeting at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun on Sunday. The footage captured chaotic scenes as several men pursued Mudi while he tried to escape.

Mudi was later seen receiving treatment in hospital with visible bruises and a bloodied head, while wearing an APC-branded safari.

The government said the move was required to ensure the investigation proceeded without interference. It reaffirmed that public safety and the maintenance of law and order remain priorities of the administration, adding that the principle applied “even when institutions of state are involved.”

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has stated that Nigeria plans to allocate all its crude oil production to the domestic market as local refining capacity expands, with the goal of refining every barrel of the country’s targeted output locally by the time production reaches 3 million barrels per day around 2030.

According to a report by S&P Global, Nigeria produced 1.74 million barrels of crude per day in June and aims to raise output to 3 million barrels daily by 2030.

NMDPRA said the country’s domestic refining capacity currently stands at about 1.12 million barrels per day.

The authority added that it has engaged the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to enforce legal provisions requiring local producers to supply crude to the domestic market under the Petroleum Industry Act.

NMDPRA Chief Executive Officer Rabiu Umar said the Dangote refinery is helping to expand capacity, particularly with plans to double its processing capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day. He stated that the authority is working to resolve crude supply shortages faced by local refineries and ensure compliance with domestic crude supply obligations.

“The Federal Government wishes to end the pattern where much of the country’s crude volumes are exported and refined products imported,” Umar said. “We are engaging the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission to ensure that every molecule of our 3 million b/d that we hope to achieve in the coming years is refined locally.”

NUPRC data showed that 53.7 million barrels of Nigerian crude were supplied to domestic refiners in the second quarter of 2026, of which 52.6 million barrels went to the Dangote refinery.

Armed military personnel have taken over security duties at the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The move is said to stem from Mustapha’s defeat in the APC governorship primary, his failure to secure the party’s Kwara Central senatorial ticket, and growing internal disagreements within the APC.

Reports indicate that the PDP’s Kwara Central senatorial ticket is being reserved for Mustapha. If the defection materialises, it would set up a direct contest against Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the APC candidate for the same seat.

Such a development could produce one of the most significant political battles in Kwara State in 2027, pitting the governor’s APC structure against a potential coalition involving former Senate President Bukola Saraki’s political network, the G15’s grassroots machinery, and a Tinubu-aligned bloc in Abuja.

The speculation gained further traction on Monday after the PDP’s current Kwara Central senatorial candidate, Yinka Otukoko, responded to a post on the popular WhatsApp platform Kwara Commission. He wrote that his ticket was “for either Saliu Mustapha of G15 or Mashood Mustapha.” Party insiders interpreted the comment as a sign that the PDP is open to accommodating Mustapha.

The issue is not just the governorship primary; there are also concerns about what happens to the Kwara Central Senate seat and his political future in the APC.”

Another insider claimed that the Saraki camp had met with members of the G15 and agreed to offer the group two senatorial tickets under the PDP structure. The source noted that Mustapha possesses federal connections, name recognition, funding, and a structure capable of competing ward-for-ward with the governor.However, the Kwara State PDP dismissed Otukoko’s statement.

State Publicity Secretary Olusegun Adewara told newsman that the message should be disregarded, explaining that Otukoko’s WhatsApp account had reportedly been compromised.

“Please discard such submissions. It wasn’t from Otukoko, nor is it our party’s position. I understand Otukoko’s WhatsApp was hacked at a point recently and this may have been responsible for the misleading narratives,” Adewara said.

He added that widespread reactions to the statement were “miles apart from reality.”An Ilorin-based public affairs analyst, Abdulrasaq Olanrewaju, said that if Otukoko genuinely made the comment, it could reflect an understanding of political numbers and coalition-building.

He noted that a possible defection by Mustapha, combined with the PDP ticket, could significantly alter calculations in Kwara Central and strengthen the opposition’s position.

Efforts by The PUNCH to obtain reactions from the APC and Mustapha were unsuccessful as of press time. APC spokesperson Abdulwaheed Babatunde and Mustapha’s Executive Assistant, Abdulkareem Alabi, promised responses but had not provided any by the time of filing.

The newly inaugurated team has been mandated to pursue aggressive grassroots mobilisation aimed at securing victory for all PDP candidates in the senatorial district.

Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming he urged Nigerian soldiers to reject the salary increase approved by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Tuesday, Obi described the reports as false and called on Nigerians to disregard them.

“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue,” he said.

President Tinubu recently approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for armed forces personnel, effective September 1, 2026.

The package is expected to benefit about 250,000 personnel and raise the annual salary bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Obi stressed that his respect for members of the security forces remains unwavering. He said he has consistently advocated for adequate equipment, motivation, and protection for security personnel.

She urged Nigerians not to fixate on the 2027 general elections for now, but to confront the country’s present condition. According to her, current leadership has caused significant degradation among citizens, and people should begin “voting for themselves.”

“The Nigeria construct is orphaned, and it’s only loved by the people I call predators of patriotism. When they are in office, they are patriotic about Nigeria but outside of office they are not patriotic,” she said.

“I do not think that the most important thing for Nigerians to be talking about is the 2027 elections at this point.
