Add iNAVigate as a Search Provider in Safari

Following on from yesterday’s post which gave Internet Explorer users a way to add iNAVigate as a Search Provider, today it’s the turn of Safari.

We’re talking Safari for the Mac here, as I’m not aware of any way to add custom Search Providers on the Windows version.

Even on your lovely Mac (yes, I’m a big Apple fan!) it’s not supported out of the box. Apple locks down the search provider to just Google.

This is where a handy plugin called Glims comes in. Amongst other things, Glims allows you to use custom search providers in Safari.

Using Glims to add iNAVigate as a Search Provider

First up, download and install the Glims plugin from machangout.com

Once installed head to the Safari Preferences page, click Glims and then select Search Engines from the list on the left:

Click the Add button and fill in the details:

The full Query URL should be as follows:

http://www.google.com/cse?cx=008932603806167402700%3Apcuhwmtc3jc&ie=UTF-8&q=,#query#,&sa=Search&siteurl=www.google.com%2Fcse%2Fhome%3Fcx%3D008932603806167402700%3Apcuhwmtc3jc

Click the Add button to finish and you should now be able to use the drop down list of search providers to select iNAVigate:

iNAVigate is a custom search engine geared towards the Dynamics NAV community.

If you’ve not tried it before, there are already a number of ways you can access it.

Add iNAVigate to your Google homepage
Go directly to the iNAVigate homepage
Use this short URL http://j.mp/iNAVigate
Click the link in the menu bar at the top of his page

If you use a recent version of Internet Explorer as your browser, you can now add iNAvigate as a Search Provider and search directly from your toolbar.

To add to Internet Explorer simply click this link and select Add in the Add Search Provider dialog:

iNAVigate will now show up in your list of search providers:

Simples.

Hijri date converter for Dynamics NAV

Need to convert Gregorian to Hijri dates in Dynamics NAV?

The Islamic calendar or Hijri calendar is a calendar based on the cycles of the moon, used to date events in many Muslim countries and to determine the correct day on which to celebrate Islamic holy days and festivals.

A question appeared on the Navision newsgroup some years ago asking how to go about converting Gregorian to Hijri dates in Dynamics NAV, so I set about writing some code to achieve this.

I though the new year may be an appropriate time to repost that code for anyone who needs it.

You can download the Hijri Date Management codeunit here.

Example function calls:

MESSAGE(Date2Hijri(010110D,0));

This message window would show: 15/1/1431

MESSAGE(Date2Hijri(010110D,1));

This message window would show: Friday 15 Muharram 1431 A.H.

Changes to the Installation Media in Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1

Recently I installed the GB version of the Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Classic client directly from the CsideClient folder and was surprised to find the ENG folder absent after installation.

Why had it not been installed?

Between NAV 2009 and NAV 2009 SP1 the structure of the installation media has changed slightly.

Up until now the language folder could be found in ..\CsideClient\program files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\60\Classic and would be installed if running setup directly from the ..\60\Classic folder:

With SP1 all localisation has been been moved into a new folder at the root of the installation media called Installers

The Installers folder contains subfolders with localized installers for the following:

CSide
Documentation
OlAddin
RTC
Server

The upshot of this is that locale specific files will only be installed if you run the main setup executable at the root of the installation media.

You can however run the installers independently from the folders above if you need to.

Microsoft Pilots Dynamics KB Articles in the Wild

A limited selection of Microsoft Dynamics Knowledge Base articles are now accessible at support.microsoft.com

This move which pushes knowledge base content for Dynamics NAV, AX, SL etc. out onto the broad, publicly accessible support website is part of a two month pilot which started on September 1st.

The main advantage of having this content located here is that it will be picked up and indexed by search engines, leading to greater all round visibility.

Articles are not be presented in their entirety but contain the article title and abstracts, allowing customers/partners to visit CustomerSource or PartnerSource to view the complete article.

It will be interesting to see how this progresses after the pilot ends.
