The NDP’s Fin Donnelly has won the New Westminster-Coquitlam riding in the federal byelection.

The race was expected to be tight, but Donnelly placed comfortably ahead of second place finisher Diana Dilworth (Conservative). The seat was made vacant when the NDP’s Dawn Black decided to take a run in provincial politics.

Two separate stabbings in Surrey; one arrested

Mounties have arrested one person after a stabbing at a home in Surrey. It happened a little after 5 a.m. on 61st and 145A Street.

The victim is in hospital with serious injuries. Police say the two are known to each other but have not released any other information.

Meanwhile Police are looking into another stabbing -- this time at the Baselines Pub off Fraser Highway and 168th Street. It happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Study finds there's enough capacity in power grid to charge electric cars

The juice is there for electric cars. B.C. has the power capacity to charge 2.5 million electric cars, which is about the same number of vehicles that are on the road now.
The finding was made by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions at the University of Victoria. Study co-author, UVic engineering professor Curran Crawford, says there will be challenges, like getting drivers to charge up only overnight when demand for power is at its lowest.

The intersection of Lougheed and Shaughnessy in Coquitlam was closed for almost five hours Thursday. RCMP Constable Brigette Goguen says a police cruiser was involved in a serious accident there around 4:30 p.m.. "A marked police car was responding to a police incident and was using their lights and sirens and was T-boned at the intersection."

Goguen isn't sure how many people have been hurt and how badly.

The Vancouver Coastal Health authority says emergency rooms here are coping with the extra patients that are coming in with swine flu symptoms.
Visits by patients are up 10 to 20 per cent. However, the health authority says hospitals in the region have not reached the point where elective surgeries would have to be postponed to deal with the crush of patients.

The military has been called in to help handle two live munitions found near Alpha Secondary School in Burnaby. RCMP are guarding the immediate area as they wait for explosives experts to arrive. The school and nearby homes were evacuated.

RCMP say the death of a 50-year-old man in Maple Ridge last night is being investigated as a homicide. Mounties were called out around 9:45 p.m. and found the man seriously hurt. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Team Canada men's hockey roster coming New Year's Eve
