So….

“Telepresence”.

I get a kick out of seeing the so called “video conferencing experts” struggle to define this simple word. So far the most common and widely available definition of “Telepresence” is from Wikipedia. It states:

“Telepresence refers to a set of Technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location.”

That simple sentence says it all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, VC (video conferencing) experts all have opinions gained from their years and years in the VC industry. They’ve been there, done that and have gained all the knowledge required to become wizards of their industry. That same “vast amount of gained knowledge” they’ve amassed is also part of the reason we’ve been waiting for VC to prove itself since the video phone in 1964. Instead of running to a common goal, they’re running in circles. Smart people do that ya’ know.

I think they’ve all missed the point. There, I said it. That’s sure to make more than a few people cringe. Oh well. Here’s another observation. It’s probably not their job to “define” Telepresence anyway. They’re looking so past the point, kind of like a brain surgeon that can’t change a flat tire. They’re thinking it has to do with video conferencing, 3-D, Pepper’s Ghost, video over IP or even 4-D magic. Lenses, lighting, immersiveness, latency, HD, Plasma, Bandwidth, etc. The question lingers – at what point does video conferencing become Telepresence? Is it 70ms latency? Video over IP? HD immersiveness? Right?

Wrong. All wrong.

How about it doesn’t matter? Video conferencing (in all past and future reincarnations) is just a facet of “Telepresence”. 3-D imaging? Another facet. What we watched on historical CNN Election night with the “hologram” camera trick? Another facet.

Simply put: Tele – “to or at a distance” and Presence – “the impressive manner or appearance of a person”. Telepresence. End of story, case closed.

The companies that have figured out that the word “Telepresence” is more about marketing then an actual definition are going to soar, while others that are still trying to define it are going to get kicked to the curb. It doesn’t matter who invented it. It does matter who’s going to capitalize on it. Telepresence in its essence is the boss barking orders via a walkie talkie (or string and cup for that matter). It doesn’t matter if it’s 720i HD at 30 fps, or 3-D Pepper’s Ghost technology, or 300 cameras building a trick hologram. Those methods are just the means to convey Telepresence, not Telepresence defined.

Presently, Cisco is running with the ball because of their TV commercials and Internet play. Marketing 101. They didn’t invent Telepresence, but they’ve been marketing it. They’re not waiting on unified conferencing “Standards”, they’re not waiting on a definition and they’re surely not waiting on anybody or anything. They are forging ahead with their Telepresence related products. Remember, if you believe like I do that Telepresence is not about “video conferencing”, but about “all” the different technologies that can make up “Telepresence”, you can change the tire and get on down the road instead of getting your gray matter mired in the mud thinking up a definition that won’t please all of the people anyway.

Sometimes we’re so smart, we’re stupid.

Just my two cents worth. Take it or leave it.

L2 Lumpy (telepresent and accounted for)

Of things to build a new platform Nokia and Intel push open source networking platform MeeGo

Today, Nokia announced that it would Maemo communication systems with Intel’s Moblin merged to enable the new name MeeGo, handed over to Linux Foundation for Management.

It can be said that this is a Linux operating system family of two Dell Inspiron 9300 Battery smart merger of Nokia’s Maemo is built on open source components of the desktop computer architecture platform, is a network system architecture to build an application and innovative technology.

MeeGo inherited separately terminal equipment to master the underlying architecture and the outstanding advantages of the two giants genes, the operating system integrates two of their respective Linux computing environment (Intel’s Moblin and Nokia Maemo), for a variety of computing devices hardware platform designed to including man-portable notebook computers, the Internet book, tablet PCs, multimedia phones, network TV and in-car infotainment systems, aiming at the challenges to steal the show in Google, Apple and other device platforms and operating systems.

Maemo community, according to Chairman of the Committee Valério introduced, MeeGo combines the advantages of both Maemo and Moblin is an open architecture for multi-processor platform, MeeGo retained the Moblin core operating system, and support a wide range of device types and a rich user experience , and combined with Maemo’s influence in the mobile industry, as well as software developers have been widely used framework for Qt applications and user interfaces. Developers can now write MeeGo with Qt Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery.

Technically speaking, MeeGo will drive future mobile Internet era. At the meeting, Nokia stressed: “The most important feature of the network platform is open source, open wide the door to welcome friends, so that more of the ISV, SI to obtain business opportunities.”

Indeed, MeeGo get to the large number of ISV, SI, as well as operators sought after, at present, the network platform, has been the concern of telecom operators Orange, Telecom Italia has also begun and Intel will jointly develop next-generation operating system, Internet and MeeGo Network TV services, also revealed that there are also MeeGo partners to develop support for e-government, e-health care, television commercial, home automation, remote education and remote video surveillance applications.

Structure from the MeeGo view map and related information, MeeGo is divided into three layers: the kernel from the Moblin-based OS base layer, MeeGo UI framework and other services in the middle layer, and the user experience for different devices reference design.

The application of MeeGo will leap, the original Moblin and Maemo applications can run on MeeGo, the nearly-based MeeGo Qt, Webkit development and application, a number of Runtime on top of the applications. At the same time, industry analysts say, from the perspective of the hardware chip, not only to support after the merger MeeGo chips based on Intel architecture (which is in the notebook, the Internet present, MID and other areas to be widely distributed application processor), also supports the ARM chip , while the ARM chips are widely used in smart phones. This will increase the MeeGo a unique appeal.

Obviously, MeeGo is to promote home, car, office and a variety of portable devices to seamlessly communicate and establish a platform for Dell Inspiron E1705 battery interconnection system, he can be applied to the Internet as well as the infrastructure platform. In addition, from the developer’s point of view, Maemo based on Linux, on the ISV, SI market in the future to open up infinite possibilities, “the use of a greater degree of freedom that can support the entire device.” Valério says.

Conference, Cisco pointed out that the latest, free and borderless access solution is how to break the time, place and equipment constraints, to help customers accelerate business development speed; as well as help you understand how Cisco’s products and services, localization, etc., to help customers reduce total cost of ownership, access to more cost-effective solution.

As we progress through the era of the internet, computer networks have increased exponentially in their size and importance to business. Where once a sophisticated network was three computers connected together with a hub, we now have complex setups of core, access and distribution layered switching and powerful routers capable of handling the huge amounts of traffic that is now required to run a thriving business.

The biggest challenges for businesses is that they often lack the expertise in house to manage the network. Businesses that have been around for over 20 – 30 years realize the value of IT and networks, as does any business owner worth his salt, but many are reluctant to provide the funding and focus that the network, once a non-existent cost, it now deserves. Without spending big money on in-house expertise, it now makes sense to outsource the handling of the computers and network to a professional IT firm. Who to choose, we believe, is a huge challenge facing small and midsized businesses.

Key challenges that will affect businesses when outsourcing their IT are as follows:

? Customer service – We think this is the most important. Internally, employees are accountable, accessible and most importantly, visible. Just about every company out there knows how to fix common network issues, but the level of service you receive when you outsource varies greatly. Do you receive a ticket from a machine and wait forever for an actual human to pick up the case? Often this type of system saves the IT company time and not you. You want to speak to someone while the issue is fresh. Make sure you can get on the phone directly to your engineer when needed, as if they were an employee.

? Breadth of service – Many companies outsource to a specific provider based on a current need, and that makes sense. But often this decision ends up costing money and time, because the company chosen doesn’t offer the full range of services your business will need in the future. Those needs currently can be listed as helpdesk support, server support, communications support, software development, virtualization, application support, web development, online marketing, hardware sales, IP telephony, VoIP and unified communications and equipment financing. Make sure your provider can do all these things or risk having multiple service providers and vendors that will cause unnecessary headaches.

? Vendor certifications – judging a business on a meeting with one or two of the representatives and taking note of everything they say isn’t a good way to choose an IT services provider. Check the certifications the company has received from the leading Vendors, as this is the best indication you can use to judge the competency of the business.

? Account managers – having a single point of contact through which to direct all your enquiries will save you time and help you to build up trust in a provider. Make sure you will receive an account manager. Get to know them well, buy them presents and praise them constantly, especially if they’re called Paul.

This all sounds hard, but once a good decision is made you’ll finally be able to stop reading articles like this and focus on your business, not your network.

One of the Nucentcom’s newest clients, Jesus Calls’ Director of International Affairs, Mr. Suloch Raja, has this to say about choosing Nucentcom: “With millions of disciples and followers worldwide, we couldn’t keep up with the onslaught of prayer requests. We prayed and struggled to find a partner that would fairly and honestly help point us in the right direction. Nucentcom and Mohan have given us a cost-effective, feature rich solution to all of our problems.”

Nucentcom has been chosen by Jesus Calls to be its technology partner to meet the growing demands for telecommunication needs. And this is just one of the many small to large organizations and businesses that will be making use of and adopting Nucentcom services.

In line with Nucentcom’s goal of a unified services platform and the goal to provide only the best service in keeping up with today’s quick-changing world, one of the company’s moves is choosing Watchguard as Primary Firewall Source. Nucentcom has just released that after extensive testing and comparisons, it chooses Watchguard over all other competitors’ devices. Watchguard was assessed against Juniper, Fortinet, Cisco, and SonicWall, and Watchguard offered features suitable to Nucentcom’s needs and at a price range that will be accepted by its customers.

Nucentcom can now offer a state of the art VOIP PBX with supporting infrastructure from Polycom’s HD voice hardware, and a 24/7 Intrusion monitoring services.

Nucentcom is also in the process of finishing agreements with a number of large vendors to provide DID origination and termination of domestic and international long distance at considerably discounted prices. This will position Nucentcom as one of the few companies that can offer any organization the ability to provide bandwidth, VOIP PBX services, firewall monitoring and round the clock security monitoring that can be seen over the internet.

Nucentcom has also selected and purchased Polycom HD Voice equipment for all foreseeable future installations, selecting it out of 20 vendors by testing them in Nucentcom’s labs.

As stated by Dr. Vidyalal Valiyakambrath (Dr. LAL), Chief Technology officer: “We simulated testing environments ranging from ideal to absurd, and only Polycom could handle the load and VoIP circuit discrepancies. Their HD voice technology which uses cutting edge DSPs (digital signal processors) is marvelous. It achieves clarity on par with landlines.”

Employing Polycom’s HD Voice technology will mean that the end user receives twice the clarity of ordinary phone calls, another edge for Nucentcom.

With all the contends going on to further develop, advance or better the telecommunications service, business owners, who in this day and age are adopting the said service, are the ones who get the full benefit. The vital thing is to make the smart choice. Nucentcom is a smart buy and its clients cannot help but agree.

Overview

Priority business requirement with today’s enterprise companies is to reduce their capital and support costs while improving the effectiveness of their network infrastructure, security and management. Cisco has developed IP Telephony solutions, which address those requirements while allowing for migration from current PBX switches in a cost effective manner. Current PBX switches are both expensive to purchase and support. IP Telephony offers an alternative that replaces the company PBX with Call Manager software that will run on a Windows server. The current version of Call Manager has features such as unified messaging integration, call routing with fail over, easy migration from the current PBX infrastructure, and management that is integrated with CiscoWorks.

Since Call Manager was designed to replace your PBX, there are all of the telephony features that you would expect with any voice switch. It is important to distinguish between IP Telephony and Voice over IP, Voice over Frame Relay and Voice over ATM. The voice router modules interface with the existing PBX at each company office and don’t use IP phones. IP Telephony will replace the PBX switch at each office with Call Manager for switching and routing of all voice traffic. As well the data circuits are utilized with Call Manager as with Voice over IP. There is a capital expenditure with the purchase of IP Phones which are designed to work with Call Manager software. As well there is a cost effective option called a Soft Phone, which runs as an application at the client desktop.

The employee requirements should be considered to determine which is most appropriate for the employee. As mentioned there is diversity (fail over) built into IP Telephony from a circuit, call routing and IP Phone perspective. The current PSTN circuit can be utilized for fail over should the IP WAN circuit be unavailable. The PSTN circuit is configured to transport voice traffic during periods when the IP WAN circuit is congested or when it is unavailable. Call routing diversity is provided with Call Manager clustering which designates a group of servers that continue processing calls when a server isn’t available. The IP Phone can be plugged into a different campus switch port than the desktop or it can plug into the same port and assign separate vlans to data and voice traffic. Plugging the phone into a different switch than what the desktop uses will prevent both phone and switch being unavailable should a campus switch fail however that becomes very expensive.

Quality of service is important with any voice migration project since voice traffic is delay sensitive. Bandwidth must be allocated to reduce or eliminate jitter. IP phones can prioritize voice traffic before it arrives at the campus switch. The campus switch examines each packet and will allocate bandwidth for packets that are designated as higher priority.

Design Example

This design implements Call Manager at an office with hundreds of employees. This implementation has the desktop and IP phone sharing the same switch port which is the least expensive option for connecting an IP phone to the network. There are 3 options for powering your IP phone. Some campus switches offer an in-line power module for powering the phones. If that switch type isn’t available for your company, you can plug the phone into a 120 volt AC wall outlet using an adapter or purchase an external patch panel that sends power across pins 1 and 4 of the RJ-45 phone cable.

Call Manager is installed on a Windows server, which is connected to the switch. A Voice Mail server is connected to the Call Manager server for processing employee Voice Mail requests. Cisco offers a Voice Mail server called uOne. The switch connects to the voice enabled 3660 router with a 100 Mbps Ethernet link. The router runs IOS voice gateway software, which provides E.164 Address Resolution and WAN call admission control. There are 2 available circuit options for failover design. The primary circuit utilized will be the data circuit as it is with Voice over IP. The PSTN vendor usually charges the client by usage, which makes it important to provision your data circuit with additional bandwidth for the additional voice traffic. That will address the design requirements for performance while minimizing congestion and subsequent traffic across the PSTN.

As mentioned, voice packets can be prioritized at each IP phone for end-to-end quality of service at Layer 2 and 3 of the OSI model. Packet prioritization at Layer 2 is available with 3 bits of the 802.1p field of an 802.1q tag. 802.1q is a tag that is appended to each packet with the VLAN membership of that packet. When the packet is sent across a switch trunk line, each switch will read the 802.1q tag to determine VLAN membership for that packet.

The 802.1p priority field defined with the 802.1q specification is utilized for setting those 3 bits to a value between 0 – 6 that designates a higher priority for a packet from the default of 5. The switch will examine the 802.1p field and prioritize packets with a higher number over those with a lower number. Prioritization at Layer 3 is available with 3 bits of the Differentiated Services Control Packet (DSCP) field of the Type of Service (ToS) byte specified with each IP header. Those 3 bits are set to a value between 0 – 6 to indicate a preference for voice packets to be prioritized.

Each IP phone must request an IP address, subnet mask and default IP gateway address which is available with DHCP services. There is an option as well to assign those items with static IP addressing which requires configuration when the IP phone is implemented. The best option is DHCP since there is a lot less administrative work. The IP phone then registers their IP address and dial number with Call Manager before sending voice packets across the network. Cisco IP phones are designed to use G.729 compression for all voice traffic.

Once the traffic is compressed, it is sent to the connected campus switch. When it arrives at the switch, the 802.1p and DSCP fields are examined for prioritization. Those voice packets that are marked as priority are then processed by the campus switch before data packets. Call Manager examines the dial numbers and forwards the packet with the proper routing information to the router. The router will examine the DSCP field since it is a Layer 3 device and prioritize voice packets before data packets for transport across the WAN. The destination Call Manager server will examine the routing information of that voice packet and forward it to the campus switch where it arrives at the connected IP phone.

Call Manager has defined both distributed and centralized models which define where the Call Manager servers are located across the enterprise network. The distributed model has Call Manager at each office and calls are routed between servers at each office. That model can support 100 offices with 8 Call Manager servers per cluster. Each office can support 10,000 employees per cluster. The centralized model has one or more Call Manager clusters at a designated office which requires that all calls be sent across the WAN to that office for routing between offices. A typical Call Manager cluster has 3 servers with the centralized model, which will process calls for 2,500 employees. It is possible to implement additional clusters at the centralized office for scalability as the company grows.

As a SME owner, CIO or IT Manager, you’ve heard about the latest hot topic in IT – Unified Communications. So what is it? Unified communications (UC) is the end goal of a process to converge the voice, video and data networks into a single IP network. Moving all communications to the IP network integrates all forms of communication and transforms traditional multimedia end-points, such as PC’s, smartphones and IP telephones into fully functional communication devices, allowing you to get what you need wherever you are.

A study by Springboard Research, conducted with 469 Australian CIO’s and business owners, found that 33% of SME’s are planning on adopting some form of unified communications in 2009. Analysts agree the technology is about to boom, but why is this the case?

The Benefits of Unified Communications

The answer lies in both the current cost and productivity benefits of the technology, and that the converged model of telephony will be the platform of the future. The benefit of adopting early is that rather than wait for the inevitable and going with the majority of SME’s late in the game, there is currently a competitive advantage to be gained.

? Consolidation of IT and telephony providers, meaning one bill, one point of contact and the reduction of complexity means reduced outsourced IT and telephony support costs.

? Toll-bypass between offices, large reduction in line rental costs and cheaper calling rates with VoIP can save up to 50% off telephony costs.

? Advanced systems are capable of videoconferencing, instant messaging (IM), internet phone calls, least cost call routing, web conferencing, telepresence, plus sophisticated PBX capabilities.

? Productivity and customer service enhancements with new communications integration with other systems, such as MS Exchange and most CRM’s.

? Work from home or on the road as if you were at your desk with a remote connection to your entire network, including your desk phone.

VoIP has come of age

Perhaps the biggest benefit is the ability to take advantage of the call-cost savings associated with VoIP. With the right network and QoS (quality of service) in place, VoIP technology is now at a stage where it is impossible to distinguish a call made from it and its traditional fixed line competitor. The difference? You will save anywhere from 25% – 60% off your current phone bill.

In combination with a private network (for businesses with more than one office location), the savings and benefits cannot be ignored. See below for a typical network diagram of a converged network running voice, video and data between three offices and the rest of the world.

Calculating ROI – The Hard and Soft Savings

To determine the return on investment (ROI – when the equipment will have paid for itself) for unified communications you must calculate both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ cost savings. ‘Hard’ costs are those with a ready and fixed dollar value like call costs, travel expenses and line rental. ‘Soft’ costs are not as easy to measure, and involve putting a dollar figure on increased customer service, employee productivity and job satisfaction. While this sounds difficult, by understanding both the average salary of employees and determining how much time the average employee spends each day locating the correct contact details of the person they are seeking to contact, we can calculate and eliminate those costs with UC using the corporate directory, IM and telepresence.

To help SME’s calculate the ROI for unified communications North Sydney IT, an IT services and unified communications specialist, has developed an online ROI calculator at http://portal.northsydneyit.com.au/voipcalculator/voipcalculator.aspx

For those interested in the hard cost figures of investing in UC we recommend using this tool. Keep in mind also that this tool does not take into account the ‘soft’ benefits discussed above.

Conclusion

The GFC reminded us that businesses that stay ahead of the curve and eliminate costs where possible stand the best chance of survival in hard times. Now we look out the other side at familiar problems. A shortage of skilled resources, competitive hiring environment and the difficult decisions of where to invest hard earned capital.

By getting a jump on the inevitable, your business can have a UC system paid off within a year thanks to the cost benefits of a converged network, and develop a competitive advantage with increased customer service, productivity and flexibility.
