Straight Bath

The most practical and common bath shape is a straight bath. Straight baths come in lots of styles e.g double ended baths, extra wide, extra deep, acrylic and steel options.

Showerbath

Corner Bath

When you buy a bath the bath material choice you make can often come down to personal choice and cost:

“Taking on a bathroom renovation from scratch is a huge job, and its only now we are finally seeing the benefits of our hard work. We spent a lot of time planning the bathroom design and finding the right fixtures and fittings to get the finish we envisioned”

This bathroom renovation really shows what can be done with some proper planning, alot of hard work and some real attention to detail.

Option 1: Keep bathroom fixtures e.g bath, sink in current positions and then upgrade all the bathroom fixtures and fittings. Check out the state of the sockets, flooring, tiling and so on to decide whether you want to completely redesign your bathroom or just rework what’s there. This is the cheapest option with regards installation as no plumbing modifications will be needed.

Option 2: Totally redesign the bathroom. This might include knocking through walls, rearranging the bathroom fixture sand even moving the plumbing/drainage. If you need to move the loo then this may involve moving waste pipes (a complicated business). Water pipes to sinks, bidets, baths and waste outlets are less complicated to move but speak to a plumber if you are unsure.

If you are designing a new home, building an extension to include a bathroom or upgrading a property which has never had the proper facilities this will be a much bigger project but allows you to greatly influence the size and layout of the bathroom design.

NB. If you are converting a room into a bathroom you will be affected by Building Regulations in terms of Change of Use - contact your Local Building Control officer for advice.

So now you know what you are doing with the bathroom you need to decide what to put in the bathroom and where. There is a lot to think about:

• What do you like and dislike about your existing bathroom?
• What bathroom style do you want to create?
• Who is the bathroom suite for? e.g. A family
• What bathroom products do you want to include?
• Do you want to create a wet room?
• Will you keep the current layout of your bathroom?
• What water system do you currently have?
• Which type of shower do you want?
• What wall coverings will you use?
• What type of floor covering will you choose?
• What are your lighting requirements?

There is a lot to consider when planning your bathroom design, a good place to start is to determine the bathroom layout, then you can select the bathroom fixtures and fittings, not only do you need to consider what fittings but the style or look you want for the overall bathroom. Shower trays can be made from several types of material:

Stone resin shower trays

Stone resin shower trays are made from a composite of resin & minerals set in a mould with either acrylic sheet or gel coat for the surface.

• Stone resin shower trays are very robust, offering compromise between heavier ceramic / fireclay products, and the lightweight acrylic shower trays
• Competitively priced
• The gel coat used to produce the glossy surface on a stone resin shower tray is softer than other materials and can lose its sheen over a period of time. To address this problem some manufacturers now offer stone resin trays that are capped with an acrylic layer rather than a gel coat
• Stone resin or composite is stable, durable and comes in lots of shapes and colours

Stone resin shower trays are available with a flat base suitable for installation on a solid floor with the pipework being run below the floor level. However some are also available with adjustable legs and detachable panels enabling the waste pipe to be run above the floor and allowing access to the shower trap.

Most shower trays sold in the UK market are now stone resin shower trays.

Acrylic shower trays

Acrylic showers trays are often perceived to be less durable than stone resin shower trays as they are much lighter. However you can get acrylic shower trays with extra reinforcement (5-8mm thick to avoid flexing).

• Acrylic trays come on adjustable legs - easier to access the waste water pipe
• Acrylic shower trays often have attractive design features such as having a totally flat base, unlike most resin trays
• Acrylic allows a greater flexibility in the shower trays design, both aesthetically and features that provide water tightness
• Arcylic is warmer to the touch
• Normally cheapest material

Steel shower trays

Steel shower trays are available from some suppliers and made in the same way as a pressed steel bath. Steel is hardwearing so can easily support the toughened glass (10mm thick).

• Not often compatible with many shower enclosures, so check before you buy
• Steel can be cold underfoot and more pricey than acrylic
• Steel shower trays are not very common in the UK so can be expensive
• Can be polished to give a stylish and glamorous look to a bathroom

Fireclay shower trays (ceramic)

Fireclay shower trays are still available from various suppliers however in limited sizes.

• Fireclay shower trays have a glazed finish, which matches other bathroom pottery
• They are hard to transport and susceptible to damage in transit
• Often not compatible with many shower enclosures
• Rigid, long lasting and easy to clean
• Can be heavy so floor may need to be reinforced to support it
• Fireclay shower trays found in commercial installations where frequent use and heavy wear is a requirement
• Not very common in the UK and as a consequence are expensive

There are hundreds of shower trays on the market so make sure you take a few minutes to ensure you choose the right shower tray material.
