The 2nd annual Nevada City Foreign Car Show, Wine Stroll, Pub Crawl and Sidewalk Sale to take place June 9, 2012

The Sierra Sports Car Group, United Way of Nevada County and The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce are proud to announce the Second annual Nevada City Foreign Car Show. This event is a collaborative effort between the three groups.

This exciting event will take place in downtown Nevada City on June 9, 2012 from 10:00 to 3:00. Foreign Car and motorcycle enthusiasts may enter their vehicles. The entry will be limited to 1980 and older vehicles, including vintage motorcycles. There will be a special class to allow cars of special interest to enter, such as race cars and exotics. The cars will be parked on Broad Street in Nevada City for the public to view. For more information on car and motorcycle registration visit www.sierrasportscargroup.com.

During this fun day, there will also be a Nevada City Wine Stroll, a Pub Crawl with several local restaurants participating and a Sidewalk Sale in downtown Nevada City. The Car Show is free to attend.

The Sierra Sports Car Group is an informal group of enthusiasts who enjoy restoring, driving, maintaining and showing their vintage cars. Most of their members are located in the Nevada City/Grass Valley area, and meet on a monthly basis. The Group began meeting in 1990 and has grown to some 75 members and the cars range from M.G’s, Austin Healey’s, Porsches and Ferraris.

This will be a great opportunity to see many of the vintage cars up close and talk to the owners of these beautiful and rare cars. There will also be music and information available about United Way of Nevada County, The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Sports Car Group. During the event a people’s choice award will be given out. The public may vote for their favorite cars. This event will go on Rain or Shine.

The proceeds will go to the United Way of Nevada County and the Chamber of Commerce to help support community efforts in our area. United Way of Nevada Counties current impact areas are Education, Income and Health.

As has been the tradition for many years, the 4th of July Committee is pleased to be the host of the 4th of July Parade which will be held in downtown Nevada City this year. Western Nevada County community “loves a parade” — our goal is to continue to provide a great show. This festive and fun-filled event is always a favorite and we guarantee another great parade and spectacular fireworks.

To assist with the funding of our community celebration, the 4th of July Committee is seeking donations from businesses, individuals and organizations. The cost of producing this traditional celebration is between $9,000 and $15,000. This year we are more in need than before, due to many cutbacks. Any donation you are able to make to help us continue this great community event, is very much appreciated. You may choose from a variety of packages, e.g., sponsoring the local school bands, The Nevada County Concert Band, The Ophir Prison Band or helping us provide the much needed, porta potties. Please, take a moment to review the information attached and then return the attached form along with your donation check to the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, office by June 10, 2012.

The Nevada County Regional Chambers of Commerce, in collaboration with Nevada County Arts, Sierra Vintners, Sierra Food/Wine/Art, Nevada County Fair and others are sponsoring the County Exhibit at the State Fair this year. They are seeking volunteers to assist in staffing the exhibit.

Volunteers are needed from July 12 – 29. Shifts are two hours long. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are the priority days that experience the most visitor traffic.

Each volunteer must submit to Megan’s Law screening. The required information for the screening is on the attached CALIFORNIA EXPOSITION & STATE FAIR MEGAN’S LAW FORM.

If any of you have spent money on advertising or promotional materials recently, then you know that it is tough to stretch those dollars! Print ads are super cool (if the circulation is good) because they may have a long “shelf” life. Radio ads are wonderful because of the ability to tell a story with enthusiasm. Yellow page ads are effective if you don’t need to tell a story and if your service is a ‘look it up’ kind of service. All these mediums have a place, but believe me, $110 won’t buy you much. Furthermore, you will only get to speak to someone if they answer your ad!

If you are looking to meet local residents face-to-face and hope to get their contact information to begin to develop a relationship with them so when they ARE looking for your service or product, they will call YOU first, then our Chamber Business Showcase is the place for you! For $110, you will be given a table to display your products and brochures as well as the opportunity to gather leads for an entire evening. Furthermore, you can invite your existing customers to the event for a chance to win prizes and meet other business contacts.

Our next open event is scheduled for Thursday, July 26th and is hosted jointly by PremierWest Bank and by the Grass Valley and Nevada City Chambers of Commerce and are fully organized by volunteers (other business owners helping you promote your business!). Gamelan Sekar Jaya – Traditional Balinese Music and Dance

Gamelan Sekar Jaya, a sixty-five member company of musicians and dancers, specializing in the performing arts of Bali, Indonesia, returns with the entire company to the outdoor amphitheater and lawn at North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center on Saturday, June 9th.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and led by master artists I Dewa Putu Berata and Emiko Saraswati Susilo, Sekar Jaya’s season finale performance will include traditional and newly created works on four distinct gamelan instrument ensembles: the cutting-edge and extremely rare seven-toned bronze gamelan semarandana; the sweetly shimmering four-tone gamelan angklung; the delicate and virtuosic gendér wayang quartet; and the rare ensemble of gigantic bamboo marimbas, gamelan jegog. The musicians will be joined by Sekar Jaya’s Balinese dance ensemble.

We are having a parking lot sale here at the KNCO radio station parking lot on May 26th to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Stalls are $25 each with 22 stalls to sell and all proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity. The hot dog place will also be donating 10% of their proceeds too! Come for a hot dog and shop. Or if you or anyone you know want to sell unwanted stuff at our parking lot sale it will be a good opportunity to clean out your garage! The station is promoting the event on radio and all participants, sellers and the local businesses will benefit from the promotions.

I’m team captain for KNCO’s WomenBuild 2012 here at the KNCO radio station with a goal to raise $5,000 for the home being built! Bottle Your Own Wine at Nevada City Winery’s Annual Open House

The weekend of May 19th & 20th Nevada City Winery is celebrating 32 years of award-winning winemaking in Nevada County including thirteen years in a row of being voted Nevada County’s Best Winery.

At this year’s Open House become a winemaker for the day and bottle your own wines. Winemaker Mark Foster has produced two special barrels of a Zinfandel and a Cabernet Franc uniquely for this event. Amid the usual rows of barrels in the wine cellar, Foster has set up an entire bottling process in miniature. First barrel taste the wines. Then fill, cork, foil, and finally sign your label before putting it on the bottle. The Winery will have all the necessary supplies available so there is no need to bring any bottles.

This year’s label art depicts the front of Nevada City Winery including the Old Foundry Garage painted by local artist Mim Meakin.

The $10 per person entry fee ($5 for Wine Club Members) to the Open House includes all wine tasting, entry to the “Bottle Your Own” party in the barrel room, and a BBQ-grilled lunch.

SAVE THE DATE – AUGUST 4TH!!

The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Vintners are proud to announce their second annual Nevada City Uncorked, August 4, 2012 from 1-5pm in historic downtown Nevada City. With nearly 50 wineries and food vendors plus over 500 attendees from neighboring Foothill communities, we expect this event to be even better than last year. Locations will be set up all within walking distance on Spring, Pine, Broad and Commercial Streets. Attendees will be encouraged to visit local businesses, chat with merchants, and learn the history of our charming town while enjoying a sampling of local Foothill wines and food. From vintage cabs and beautiful chardonnays to delicious crepes and creative California cuisine, there will be something for everyone.

Opportunities To Get Involved:
1. Restaurant/Caterer off-site – We can pair your delicious food with a local winery at a tasting room or retail shop. If you choose to serve your food at a retail shop, a representative from your business will need to be present to set up and serve the food. You will be reimbursed 50 cents for every food taste ticket you turn in after the event. Cost is $0

2. Restaurant as venue – You provide the food and venue while hosting a visiting winery or pouring your own wine in your restaurant. If you choose to have a winery pour at your restaurant you will need to forfeit your liquor license during the hours of the wine stroll. If you prefer to pour your own wine, remember that there is no limit to the number of tastes you must provide and there is no reimbursement for wine. You will be reimbursed 50 cents for every food taste ticket you turn in after the event.  Cost is $0 for Chamber members, $25 to non-chamber member (ABC license)

3. Retailer shop as venue – Host a visiting winery and restaurant/caterer. The Chamber will set up an existing table (or provide one) in your business where a winery will pour wine and a restaurant/caterer will serve their food. You act as the gracious host, and provide the festival atmosphere and help spread the word.  Cost is $0 for Chamber members, $25 to non-chamber member (ABC license)

4. Sponsor – Sponsor this year’s commemorative wine glass and have your logo featured for attendees to enjoy for years to come. Cost is $500. Smaller sponsorship opportunities may include your business’ logo on posters and flyers, signage at the event, ads in the program guide and complimentary event tickets.

5. Advertise – Ad space is available in the program guide. Ads range from $25-$100. Please contact Cathy Whittlesey at the Chamber Office if you’d like to purchase an ad. Ads must be submitted camera ready along with payment no later than July 9th.

Outreach
Our aggressive press campaign begins 8 weeks before the wine stroll and includes 3 rounds of press releases targeting local and regional press, including print, online, TV, radio and social media. 600 program guides will be printed and distributed throughout Nevada County. Local media sponsors may include The Union Newspaper, KVMR, KNCO, NC Advocate and Food Art and Wine.

Tickets are $35adv/$45day of. There will also be special wine club and group pricing available. This includes a commemorative wine glass to use at each wine tasting plus 5 food tickets. Attendees can purchase additional food tickets for 2/$5 or 5/$10. Must be 21 or older to purchase tickets.

Grass Valley Charter School is hosting its third annual Spring Fling at the Holiday Inn Express, Gold Miner’s Inn, May 19th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. Live music, delicious food, wine, cider and beer tasting as well as a no host bar. This year’s theme is “Spring into the Spirit of Adventure!”

Amazing raffle prizes, silent and live auctions will all be part of the fun! We have over 130 auction items including: vacation spots, wine getaways, girls, guys and date nights out, Kayak Adventure with our Adventure Coordinator, Alex and many more! And extra special treat is the portable rock wall that we will have for all to try. Remember to bring shorts or tights if you’re wearing a dress!

We are very excited by the online portion of this event! Not only do we have all of our auction items in our online catalog so you don’t have to wait until the auction to see what we have, you can start your planning early! This unique feature also opens the bidding up to people who either live out if town, or for some reason cannot make the event. Online bidding begins May 1, 2012.

The most noteworthy auction item category is our wonderful classroom generated art projects including canvas art pieces, Adirondack Children’s Chairs, note cards, placemats, and tiles.

Our goal for this event is to raise at least $25,000. The money raised at the Spring Fling will be used to support the GVCS Adventure Program and be used to support our School’s Strategic Growth Plan. This event is an exciting and fun way to help Grass Valley Charter, so please join us for Spring Fling, May 19th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at the Holiday Inn Express, Gold Miners Inn!

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and can be purchased at Briarpatch, Yabobo, Bookseller and at the Grass Valley Charter School office.
