BYOD TechWeekEurope Readers Value Security Over Happiness

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is one of the biggest challenges that IT departments are likely to face in the near future, but opinions are divided on its merits.

In our latest poll, TechWeekEurope asked our readers what their strongest opinion on BYOD from a selection of five was. More readers considered it to be a negative than a positive, despite just over a quarter of respondents recognising that it was likely to make staff happier.

Happiness is not the answer

Around half of readers thought that BYOD was a massive security risk, registering 49 percent of the total vote and evidently siding with TechWeek’s Eric Doyle who takes the view that it stands for ‘Bring Your own Devastation’.

A further 14 percent were also unconvinced by the benefits, declaring it an administrative headache that just wasn’t worth the pain.

However a significant proportion of respondents, 28 percent to be exact, believed that it would make staff happier if they were allowed to bring their own devices. This group clearly agree with TechWeek’s Tom Brewster, that the security issue is overstated and the benefits are worthwhile.

“Happiness” was perceived to be the greatest benefit of BYOD, with the other supposed advantages failing to convince our readers. Only five percent said that BYOD was a good way to reduce IT costs and just three percent believed it was likely to increase productivity.

This would certainly be the view of Blackpool Council, which declared that BYOD was more expensive than using in-house equipment.

Management Suits TechWeekEurope Readers

Our poll find half of our readers have management responsibilities in addition to IT

Nearly half of TechWeekEurope UK readers are involved with the management of their team or department, according to our latest poll.

It was the most common response to the question of what responsibilities they have beyond IT.

Versatile Readers

Forty-six percent of respondents said that they had management duties at their company, constituting 28.3 percent of total clicks. A third of those asked said that they were involved with the training of their staff, accounting 22.7 percent of clicks.

Just over one fifth of our readers claimed to be CEO’s at their company, while a similar number revealed that they were involved with financial or budgetary decisions at their place of work. Another fifth had sales or marketing responsibilities, while 20 percent were responsible for facilities.

Many of our readers had more than one type of additional responsibility, showing involvement at all levels of their company.

Today sees the launch of Channelbiz.co.uk, a pure play daily online channel magazine that is set to break the mould, from NetMediaEurope – the leading online IT publishing house.

Channelbiz is a channel title with a difference, because in addition to covering breaking news, the site aims to demonstrate to distributors and resellers the benefits in using emerging and nascent technologies to cut costs and to add those extra points to the bottom line.

The magazine will provide pithy comment pieces, interviews with important senior managers in the industry, and leading edge technology profiles.

The launch editor is Mike Magee, a channel veteran who also founded The Register and the Inquirer – both highly successful tech web magazines.
