Most of the work I feature on this blog comes from people I’ve never actually met, but whose talent I find inspiring. With this post, I wanted to do something a bit different and feature the work of someone who’s very talented, but who I also happen to know personally.

I’ve worked with Yin Lin Ooi since 2011, but it wasn’t until a few months ago that I discovered our shared interest in photography. While taking the same train home one night after work, we got onto the topic of enjoying photography as a hobby, and Yin Lin was able to show me some examples of her work on her tablet. Her talent is impressive, and I’ve been wanting to share Yin Lin’s photos since that night.

A couple of weeks ago, I attended Supanova in Sydney, which is in its 10th year of hosting pop culture expos in major cities around Australia.

Supanova is a popular event for fans of anime, comics, sci-fi and gaming, so it was a (pleasant) surprise to stumble across the unique work of Rhys James, who was exhibiting a variety of illustrations inspired by film and television, including beautiful portraits of classic movie stars. Rhys’s work was different to anything else I came across at the event, and as a fan of classic movies, I thought his work was brilliant.

Before leaving the event, my girlfriend and I made sure we bought a couple of prints of Rhys’s work. We ended up choosing portraits of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly to decorate our apartment. On top of the prints, Rhys also generously included a book featuring more of his work at no extra charge (you can purchase his book here).

Recently, while redesigning my portfolio, I created several 8-bit retro gaming-inspired social icons. However, once I placed them onto the page, I realised they weren’t working very well with the rest of the layout and ended up going in a different direction.

Since I liked the icons and didn’t want them to go to waste, I went back and created several more icons so I could make them available as a free download. Here’s hoping someone will get some use out of them!

Without a doubt, the best thing about social news site, Reddit, is not the thousands of links to entertaining and enlightening content that get submitted on a daily basis – it’s the community. Always willing to come to the aid of people in need, or offer words of encouragement to those experiencing hardship, Redditors consistently depart from the usual image of online communities as savage, uncivilised places (I’m looking at you, Xbox Live).

I’ve been a Redditor for three years, and still find myself in awe of some of the amazing and varied backgrounds of its users, which are often shared in great detail in comments. Many come from beautiful countries I might never have the opportunity to visit, while others have had experiences I could never imagine. Then there are those with creative talent that I can only dream of possessing. Someone who falls into the latter category is Sandra Salsbury, better known to Reddit by her username, “illustratingreddit“.

Sandra’s account on Reddit is what’s known as a novelty account. Often funny, and sometimes remarkably clever, novelty accounts generally submit content or comments that reference their username. Sandra – who is a talented illustrator based in California – uses her account to post illustrations inspired by the submissions of other users. Posted within hours of the original source of inspiration, Sandra’s work is incredible, and perfectly reflects the character of the Reddit community.

In just two weeks, Sandra has managed to capture the imagination of thousands of Redditors with her talent. However, I feel her work deserves even more attention outside of Reddit.  So, below you’ll find some examples of Sandra’s illustrations along with their original context.

I’ve been MIA when it comes to new blog posts lately, and it’s not just because I’ve been lazy. For the past few weeks, I’ve been learning as much as I can about HTML, CSS and JavaScript (special thanks to my friend, Kendrick Khoo, for his help), and I’ve been working on rebuilding my portfolio from the ground up.

As you can see in the image above, I’m sticking with a similar layout to the current design. However, the new design will be much cleaner, easier to navigate and have faster loading times.

I’m really happy with how  things are coming along, so I’m hoping to launch the shiny, new site within a week or two. Stay tuned!

There’s no doubt that the northern lights are one of the most popular photographic subjects in the world, and with good reason. Demonstrating exactly why aurora images are so popular is this stunning set of photos by James Appleton.

Shot during the first half of 2010, before the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull grounded scores of planes around Europe, Appleton managed to capture the glowing lava of the volcano and the northern lights, all together in a beautiful blend of colour and contrast.
