ABC Brisbane's Peter Scott toured the Dawn Treader sets at Roadshow Studios yesterday. One of the sets was the Town Square for Narrowhaven, and the other three sets were various locations on the ship. He then interviewed Ernie Malik who talks a good deal about the technical aspects of filming in Australia.

From ABC Brisbane:

Yesterday, I was given a tour of the set of the latest Narnia film, “Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader”.

I saw four sets. The first one was a medieval, Italian village with dirt streets and high, stone, castle-like walls. Construction workers were pulling it down as filming was finished in that set.

The ship itself is built inside one of the large concrete “sound stages” at the Oxenford studios. It was quite a surreal experience to enter the building only to see a large ship, built on top of a hydraulic machine that makes the ship appear it’s pitching and rolling on the open seas.

The third set, in another sound stage, was of the masters cabin inside the ship and the fourth, below deck (where the slaves would row).

You can read the whole story here.

The interview with Ernie Malik (the movie’s publicist) has a lot of good information about the filming locations and the scenes they still have left to shoot. You can listen to it at ABC Brisbane’s site above, or on our own podcast link below.

Huge thanks to LucyP0104 and JadistarkilleR for the link!

Onthebox.com interviewed Will Poulter for his role in School of Comedy which will come out on DVD in the UK next month. Of course, while chatting with Will, they asked a few questions about The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

You’re filming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader in Australia at the moment, how’s that going?

Its really good fun thank you, I’m really enjoying myself but I am missing home quite a bit, especially my family and friends. Although I will be sad to leave I will be really pleased to be home for Christmas.

Your character, Eustace Scrubb, isn’t very well behaved and of course you played the ‘most badly behaved kid in school’ in Son of Rambow. How do you keep getting these type of roles?

I know, I would really like to play a nice character for once! I feel quite bad about having to play those characters and I hope there is no one like Eustace Scrubb!

The famous introduction in the book by CS Lewis is: “There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” Would you say that’s a fair evaluation of your character?

Absolutely. He is a complete brat, he’s obnoxious, rude, selfish and cowardly and has no respect for anyone other than himself. However he does become a much better adjusted person at the end of the book.

You can read the full interview here.

From Scoop.co.nz: Award-winning director Michael Apted will take part in a free education lecture at Auckland Museum this Saturday in conjunction with the release of “Animals on Show,” a smart new education resource that explores and critically analyses the use of animals in entertainment. Michael Apted, one of the world’s most respected film directors, will offer a rare insight into how filmmakers contribute to meaningful learning experiences and bring social justice issues to the fore. Apted spent two months with gorillas in the wild in Rwanda while filming Gorillas in the Mist in 1988. Animals on Show draws from a wide variety of films and books including King Kong and Gorillas in the Mist, all of which explore and consider our relationship with wild and captive animals.
Just before filming wraps up for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Howard Berger threw everyone a big Halloween party.

From GoldCoast.com:

Oscar award-winning make-up artist Howard Berger threw a Halloween party for fellow cast and crew of the Chronicles of Narnia film on Saturday.

Berger, from the US, tells CC he was feeling homesick and wanted to bring the American holiday to the Gold Coast with a party at Southport Bowls Club.

He says Halloween is one of his favourite holidays and he’s even more enthusiastic than his teenage kids.

“I phoned to ask them about Halloween and they were like ‘Dad, it’s not until tomorrow’. I’m more excited about it than they are,” says Berger.

GoldCoast.com.au also interviewed Ben Barnes who said “he has enjoyed his time on the Gold Coast and is not looking forward to returning home to the UK. The Gold Coast is beautiful.”

And finally, Skandar Keynes happened to mention that “the Gold Coast gives him the heebie jeebies. That, and ‘evil pumpkins.’ ” Though he never did explain why he found the area scary. Perhaps he was joking?

Howard Berger has said that the classic children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, was one of the things that inspired him to work in makeup effects. His mother read the book to him every night when he was young, and he still has a life-size “wild thing” in his office. But when Warner Bros. approached him in 2006 about designing creatures for their film adaptation, he turned it down, saying “The direction that they were taking in the movie was certainly not the direction that I would have taken. I didn’t want to get myself in it. I had a sinking feeling about it.” The film opened last weekend, grossing $32.7m in its first three days (domestically). Watch a clip.
