ಸಧಾರನವಾಗಿ ನಮಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಕುತುಹಲ ಇರುತದೆ . ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯ ಮತ್ತು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಸವಿಸ್ತಾರವಗಿ ವಿವರಣೆ ನೀಡಿದೆ .

Normally we have a lot of curiosity regarding our customs.. This book gives a brief explanation regarding our customs & observance.

Recently I bought this book and I was very impressed with the all the information covered. So I thought of posting this on my blog...

Pandari Bai - ಪಂಡರಿ ಬಾಯಿ

Pandari Bai was born in 1930 in Bhatkal near Mangalore. The family was artistic and her father, instilled the Harikatha art in his little daughter. Under 10 years of age, Pandari gave performances drawing large crowds. During one of her plays in Mysore City, the legendary violin maestro, Mysore T. Chowdaiah, was among the audience.
Impressed by the young girl, her looks and performance, he cast her in his musical movie as the hero's daughter. That was the historic Kannada film, "Vani" (1943) and it marked Pandari Bai's entry into cinema. Recently, a print of "Vani" was found by `Master' Hiranaiah and it is being reconditioned for screening.

One night in 1942 Ranga Rao, and his son were in a state of nerve-snapping tension.The play was about to commence and the auditorium was filling up fast. But the heroine had not showed up. With tension rising, the son did not know what to do. And then the resourceful young man had a brain wave! In a matter of moments he brought in his pretty, young sister, who was hardly into her teens, to play the role, much to the shock of the orthodox and conservative parents.
Luckily for him the little sister knew all the lines and songs of the play. It was a success and the new entrant made a mark at once.
She had acted in a thousand films in several languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi and enjoyed a long span of nearly half a century. She had played lead roles in many movies with success and then switched over to character roles. Besides being attractive, she had a glowing inner beauty and a distinctive affectionate air about her which made her an ideal screen mother. Her soft looks and dialogue delivery also added lustre and depth to such roles. And above all, an excellent human being.
Pandari Bai made her debut in Tamil in the mega hit of 1944, the M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar-starrer (114 week- non-stop runner) "Haridas". In the opening song sequence, "Vaazhvil Ore Thirunaal..", the hero (M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar) on a horse chases a skimpily clad young girl. That's Pandari Bai!

With the changing trends in cinema and her advancing age, her career began to decline. Her health too suffered a setback and she lost the use of one hand in an accident. In spite of it all, she fought bravely spreading sunshine all around.

On Jan 29th 2003 our veteran actress passed away at the age of 74 in a Chennai hospital.Ailing for some time, she was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai over a month ago for kidney problems.

There have been many actresses in South Indian Cinema who perhaps have had more success, fame and fortune but they never came up to the standards of Pandari Bai for her simplicity, kind heart and loving human warmth. Rare commodities in the world of movies...

Ganapathi Venkatrama Iyer , known as G. V. Iyer - A saint who walked alone, was a well known Indian film director and actor. He was nicknamed "Kannada Bheeshma", and was the only person who made movies in Sanskrit. Born in 1917 in Nanjanagud in Mysore he started his career at the age of eight when he joined the Gubbi Veeranna theatre group. His first role as an actor in cinema was in the film Radharamana. Besides this he acted in a number of other movies such as Mahakavi Kalidasa, Sodhari, Hemavati, Hari Bhaktha and Bedara Kannapa .

G.V. Iyer is a class by himself, maybe an anachronism in the film world. He came from the old school but successfully adapted himself to the new ways of filmmaking. With absolutely no formal education, he joined the professional theatre at a very early age. When he made India's first Sanskrit film,Adi Shankaracharya and won the Golden Lotus, he stunned the entire film world. The movie also received the National Film Awards for Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Audiography and has been known as a master piece. It is believed that the movie made a great impact on Iyer. It was remarked that he stopped wearing footwear after making the movie.

He later went on to make a movie on Madhvacharya in Kannada and Ramanujacharya in Tamil. He also made a remarkable Sanskrit movie Bhagawad Gita (1993), which won Best Film at the National Film Awards of 1993. The film was also nominated for Best Film at the Bogota Film Festival.

Some of his later ventures were flops but Iyer realised that he should adapt himself to the changing trends of fim making. His metamorphosis is one of the miracles of the Kannada film industry. He learned the technique of filmmaking through observation and serious study of literature on the film craft. He took the industry by surprise by producing the award winning Vamsavrukhsha in 1972. This film, a joint effort by three brilliant minds - Iyer, B. V. Karanth and Girish Karnad - ran for 25 weeks in morning shows. By then, he was a completely changed man who came to acquire a new concern for the medium. Hamsageethe (1977) was a milestone in his career. A musical with just 12 minutes of dialogue, the film had musical score by the doyen of Carnatic music Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna who was incidentally the music director for both Bhagvad Gita and Madhvacharya. Balamurali walked away with a national award each time he scored music for Iyer's films.

Iyer also made a few teleserials like Shantala (26 episodes) for Doordarshan but unfortunately DD botched it up by scheduling for telecast at midnight. Then he made two more serials, Krishna Leela and Kadambari and had started work on his most ambitious venture, another film in Sanskrit, Ramayana.

The crowning glory of Kannada cinema , G.V.Iyer died of kidney infection at Mumbai on Sunday 21st Dec 2003 at 6 pm.

All his friends had one lament: "He didn't get the Dadasaheb Phalke, not even a Padma Shri, though his contribution to the film world is unparalleled. We hope the state government will take it up with the Centre and at least get him a posthumous award."

But what he left behind in terms of footage will be abundantly useful for the serious students of Indian cinema.

ಸಂತ ಶಿಶುನಾಳ ಷರೀಫ್ - Santha Shishunala Sharif

Shishunala Sharif (1819-1889) was a saint poet, philosopher and social reformer from the state of Karnataka in India.He was born on 7 March, 1819 in Shishuvinahala, ( Shiggaon Taluk ) a village in Haveri district, Karnataka.

Shishunala is born in a Muslim Family.As a child, Shishunala Sharif was a very charming and intelligent.It is belived that a great Guru in Shri Kalasada Guru Govinda Bhatta spotted him and persuades shishunala's father to take son as his student. Shishunala learns Hindu traditions, hymns,epics from Guru govinda .They both shared a very cordial relationship and often engaged in intriguing spiritual discussions.

After completing his studies, he worked as a school teacher for a while, before taking up the spiritual search .He composed moral poems in Kannada called Tatvapada .He is recognized as the first ever Muslim poet in Kannada literature. Shishunala Sharif was known to compose poems as per the situation and sing them to spread the messages across.Though, he never penned down his compositions, from the word of mouth quite a few them have been passed on to the next generations. All his works are in colloquial Kannada language that is called Dharwad Kannada.

In his birth place Shishuvinahala, even today both Hindus and Muslims can be seen worshipping him at the same temple. Karnataka State Government has instituted an annual award named after him for achivement in Light Classical Music.

Born in March 1905 in Mysore, K. Hirannayya has earned fame like no other in the field of Kannada theatre. At the age of ten, he joined the “Opera Talkies”, Mysore, working on movie posters and playing harmonium. He began acting in dramas produced and directed by G. R. Sando, the owner of the “Opera Talkies”. Inspired by a book on prostitution, he staged a drama titled “Karma Kannady” (the mirror of fate), which later on became popular as Devadasi, based on the social problem of Devadasis. This play was later on staged continuously for a period of five months during 1941 , A record breaking milestone in Hirannayya’s life.

In 1927, Hirannayya was chosen for Gubbi Veeranna's drama company’s branch in Mysore, which brought great fame. Later he joined Subbiah Naidu's Sangeetha - Saahitya Samrajya Nataka Sabha Drama Company, where his two dramas Karma Kannady and Yecchama Nayaka became very popular. On invitation, Hirannayya staged the drama Sadaarame playing the dual role of Adimurthy and the thief, during the Dasara festival in Town Hall, Mysore. The shows ran houseful for 48 days and his troupe recovered a profitable amount.By 1942, Hirannayya along with his friends had set up the Mitra Mandali Drama Company. He later directed Vani, the third talkie movie of that era, which won accolades and made substantial profit. In 1944, the then health minister in the Mysore Maharaja’s cabinet T. C. M. Royan, awarded the title of Cultural Comedian to Hirannayya. He died on March 21, 1953. One of his famous quotes says, "Drama is the best type of art and the worst type of profession". His son, Narasimha Murthy popularly know as "Master Hirannayya" has been paying a tribute to his father by keeping alive the characters played by him and propagating his message. Master Hirannayya's Lanchaavatara, a popular satire on corruption still runs to packed houses.

Master Hirannayya was born in 1934 in Kanathur village , Turvekere taluk of Tumkur district, Karnataka.He was the only son of Late K . Hirannayya .He took his training in dramatics under his father and on his father's death took over the drama troupe as its director, actor and playwright.

His dramas Lanchaavatara, Nadu beedi Narayana, Kapi mushti, Anaachaara, Brastaachaara have not only entertained the Kannadigas but have also awakened to

them to the reality around them. His play lanchaavatara has seen more than 10000 shows and even after 46 years is still popular with the audiences.

He has toured all over the world and put on boards his plays at the invitation of his admirers.
Several are the titles and awards won by him.The Karnataka State Open University has conferred on him the honorary Doctor of Literature.

On Feb 8th 2009 he received Sandesha Art Award .

For "Rangabhoomi," his house on 13th Cross, Banashankari 2nd Stage, upholds the tradition of family values, drawing attention to the philosophy that all of us are actors in the theatre of God and each one of us should play our roles to the best of our ability.
Hirannayya's house may not be an architectural marvel but is certainly a place of warmth, values and serenity. Anyone who visits his house is bound to carry sweet memories. Hirannayya and his wife, Shantha, are living examples of simple living and high thinking.

Hirannayya had a 12-bedroom house on Bull Temple Road, Basavanagudi, called "Lanchavathara," named after the famous political satire. He had to sell that house to clear debts. Following this, the Hirannayyas took a decision that "Rangabhoomi" will not be built with loans. Whenever a play was staged, a part of the proceeds would be kept aside for the house. A relative of Hirannayya, a civil engineer, agreed to build the house and work was completed in five years.
As the site is naturally elevated, the cellar and the ground floor open to the road on different sides. The house is a 3000 sq ft area with the cellar, the ground floor and the first floor. The cellar was initially used to rehearse plays and was built with a lot of beams to support the two floors above. The beams are now covered by a false ceiling.
The entire house was used by the family for five years. But as Hirannayya's theatre activities declined, the family moved into the cellar while the ground floor was rented out to Karnataka Bank and the first floor is being used as an office by one of Hirannayya' sons, who is a chartered accountant.
Hirannayya has three sons and two daughters. While one son lives in the U.S., two sons and their families live with Hirannayya in the house while his daughters live nearby. There are 15 people living together at "Rangabhoomi," including two unrelated artistes.It is not easy to keep the concept of the joint family alive. It requires a lot of sacrifice to benefit from staying together.
A visit to Rangabhoomi teaches openness, positive attitude and creativity. The house is a temple of learning from where this writer came back recharged to face life with enthusiasm.

Babu Hirannayya, an artiste in his own right and son of Master Hirannayya, recalls that the 50 x 80 corner site at Banashankari was purchased in 1976-77.

He has converted some part of the house into a museum and no space on the wall has been wasted. There is a cosy verandah with a painting of the Hirannayyas on the wall along with some certificates of honour.

Babu Hirannayya is set to publish his father veteran stage artiste Master Hirannayya’s plays that revolutionalised Kannada theatre, in the form of an anthology. He is doing it to clear misconception about him and to keep his work alive in future.Babu, a well-known name in television and theatre world, also plans to publish all the plays written by his grandfather, comedian Hirannayya, who wrote the hit play “Devadasi”, staged countless number of times in the past six decades.
“Unfortunately, many people think my grandfather and my father just wrote some comedy-oriented dramas and staged them. This misconception can only be cleared by publication of all these plays,” He said .
Babu said each book, titled “Nenapina Angaladhalli”, will have five plays written by his father and grandfather. And he wants all the books to be published simultaneously in the name of Shantha Publications.

He has already completed a script for a film which has been titled “Chintegalige Vidaya Heli”.“I am following the foot steps of my grandfather and father in writing script. The story is very contemporary and I have narrated the script with a bit of sarcasm and seriousness,” says Babu, whose performances in serials like “Muththina Thorana” and “Yeke Heege Namma Naduve” have been much appreciated.
He had also worked as an assistant director to National Award winning director Ramadas Naidu on the movie “Mussanje”.

Bhadragiri KeshavDas was born on 22 July 1934 in the small village of Bhadragiri, Karnataka, and was an initiated disciple of Shrimat Sudhindra Tirtha Swamiji of Kashi Mutt, Madhwacharya Sampradaya. At the age of 11, he had a mystical and illuminating vision of God at the dilapidated temple at his native place. Lord Krishna commanded him in a vision to "sing my name, sing my praises". Although this singular event marked the beginning of a dedicated life of spirituality as a Haridasa, it is important to note that he followed in the tradition of the singing saints by leading the life of a householder and maintaining a family.
Before he began his world tours he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in 1956 and a Law degree from Udipi Law College in 1958 . Soon he relocated to the West where he set about on a path of teaching Bhakti yoga in the Vaishnava tradition, along with many other eastern spiritual disciplines. He was a modern East Indian guru who was well regarded and well known in the United States and India as a saint of the Vaishnava Haridasa tradition of the Madhwa sampradaya. Guru Mata, the devoted wife of Sant Keshavadas, assisted her husband in his universal mission since their marriage in 1951.

His world headquarters was established near Bangalore, India at Vishwa Shanti Ashram or World Peace Ashram. December 4, 1997 saw the passing of this great soul and living saint . Guru Mata continues the mission begun by Sant Keshavadas.

He also authored a number of books, initiated disciples and formed several spiritual centers.

Vishwa Shanti Ashram was established in April 1982 by Sadguru Sant Keshavadas to promote international peace and understanding. Its located 24 kilometers outside Bangalore in Karnataka State. The Bhagavad Gita Mandir is an architectural wonder whose octagonal walls display engraved on polished black granite plaques all 700 verses of wisdom sung by Lord Sri Krishna to His disciple Arjuna, a warrior prince who was confused about his duty on the battlefield.

His son Shyam Pai , trained in the classical music under the tutelage of his father the late Sant KeshavDas, and Tabla under the tutelage of maestros such as Ustad Zakir Hussein and Pundit Swapan Chowdhry has taught Hindustani classical music and Tabla at India International School , Virginia and elsewhere for the past several years.

Like his brother Bhadragiri Achyutdas is also following the same path & he is popular for his Keertane / Harikathe in Kannada & Konkani. The depth of Achyutdas's scholarship is apparent in his discourses where he extensively quotes from the Gita, the Dasa literature and the Bhakti Saints. In fact, it is he who coined the term Kathakirtan, a combination of text (Katha) and music (Kirtan).

Born on March 5th 1913 , Gangubai is a legend in her lifetime .Gangubai was born into a musical family in Dharwad. Her mother Ambabai is said to have taught the young Gangubai Carnatic music with a variety of Tyagaraja's compositions.This laid the foundation for her later prowess in swara singing. Soon she was listening to gramophone records of Hindustani music, particularly the popular Marathi "Natya Sangeet". Sensing her interest, her mother put her under a Hindustani music guru Krishnacharya Hulgur. She even learnt Kathak from Shamlal and Prataplal, the Jaipur brothers who were then in Hubli.

Nicknamed "gaanewali", she was ostracized by the orthodox brahmins. But her irrepressible talent brought her the respect, status and the financial security she has always craved. Fate had ordained her for music, She was 16 when put under Sawai Gandharva ( Pt. Rambhau Kundgolkar ) , a disciple of late Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, after a typical ceremony gandhabandhan, at which 20 tolas of gold was given as gurudakshina.
Sawai Gandharva lived in the village of Kundgol near Hubli. Here Gangubai's talents were fine tuned. This was in the 1930s, when Gangubai , a young mother herself struggled to do her sadhana.
Her mother's death made her more determined to pursue a career in music and she gradually gained a footing in the right direction. Over time, she became a name to reckon with and went on to prove her might as a musician in many national festivals.
Her debut was at the Belgaum session of the Indian National Congress in 1924. But her concert career took off in 1933 in Bombay. Immediately noticed by HMV, she started cutting discs.
As one who knows both Hindustani and Carnatic music, she has said "The two systems have enjoyed peaceful co-existence without shedding their basic character and identity.
She has two sons and one daughter (late Smt.Krishna Hangal, eminent classical singer). Her eldest son Sri Baburao Hangal is actively involved in promotion of music and the fine arts in Karnataka and younger son Sri Narayan Hangal is retired Supurintendent Engineer. Gangubai's relationship with her husband Shri Gururao Kaulgi has played a very significant role in her life. He proposed a civil marriage to her, but she turned it down because "he belonged to a respectable family and she wanted him to continue to belong there." Gangubai insisted that he marry his cousin and in fact grew very fond of his wife and their children.
Her selfless devotion to him was never considered a sacrifice by her and even though he was a brahmin, a lawyer, it was ironically she who supported him throughout. He did not practise law and so whatever money she earned, she just placed before him. He invested in business but lost everything. Often he would disappear from home for months . The bank people would come and harass , ask for her property as she was unable to repay the loans. This happened several times. He died while she was performing in Bombay .

A purist and a traditionalist, Gangubai has always believed in the classical tradition of music. But she has never denied the usefulness of adaptation to changing times. She has never believed in image building at the cost of honest music. In the shadow of this wave of appreciation, she remained a simple woman, wearing a nine-yard Poona cotton sari at home, doing her riaz (practice) and treating us to several impromptu sessions of soulful music.

Her grandson Manoj Hangal converted her house in Dharwar into a museum. It was inaugurated on March 13th 2005. Manoj said that the museum has been set up with awards and honours received by his grandmother in her long and illustrious career.
Also on view at the museum are rare photographs of musicians of yesteryear and gramophone records of vintage value. The maintenance of this home is with Hangal Music Foundation. However, the ownership of this museum remains with the Karnataka State Government. This is probably for the first time in India that the home of a great personality has been converted into a museum during his or her lifetime.

Dr.Gangubai Hangal has the rare distinction of having sung before Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
She has been awarded by nine Prime Ministers.
She has sung for Marathi Film Vijachi lagan.
She has traveled to 13 countries.
One of the few and rare exponent of Kirana Gharana which was only limited to males.
Her first commercial disc was released by HMV Mumbai in 1932 & her first live programme in All India Radio was in Mumbai in the year 1933.
At the age of 94 years, she sung in a concert organized by Academy Performing Arts of Belgaum on 12th March, 2006.
She has served as a Chairman of Karnataka Sangeet Nritya Academy from 1982 to 1984.
She has served as a senate member of Karnataka University for 6 years.
Her education was only upto 5th standard, yet she has worked as Honorary Professor Music, Karnataka University, Dharwad.
In recognition of her services in the field of music the Government of Karnataka nominated her as a Member of Legislative Council(MLC) for 6 years.
Gangubai is a legend in her lifetime. A woman of extraordinary talent and courage, she has kept her position in the male dominated world of vocal music right through a whole century...

Its been very sad to know that Doyen of Hindustani vocal music Gangubai Hangal passed away on 21st July 2009 @7.10am ..
Although Gangubai was old and infirm, she was a source of inspiration to everyone and now Gangubai Hangal Music Museum and Gangubai Hangal Sangeetha Vidyalaya will keep her alive in people's minds. According to the family her granddaughters-in-law Veena and Archana will carry forward the legacy .The chief minister of Karnataka has promised tobuild a music school in her name and install her statue in Hubli as well as Bangalore. The most meaningful tribute we pay to her is to promote music, as she wished. May her soul rest in peace.

Anant Pai (Founder and Editor - Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle) , popularly known as Uncle Pai was born on 17 September, 1929 in Karkala, Karnataka . At the age of two he lost his parents .At the age of twelve, he came to Mumbai, where he studied in Orient School, Mahim. He was a dual degree holder from the University of Bombay. Endowed with a passion for publishing and comics, his failed attempt at creating a children's magazine (Manav, 1954) was followed by a career as a junior executive in the Times of India books ( Indrajal comics ) division. Indrajal featured reprints of popular American strip characters such as the the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and later Bahadur and Dara.

During a quiz contest aired on Doordarshan in February 1967, participants could easily answer questions pertaining to Greek mythology, but were unable to reply to the question "In the Ramayana, who was Rama's mother?".This made him to leave his job and start Amar Chitra Katha, with the help of late G. L. Mirchandani of India Book House. The series went on to become a publishing milestone for the Indian comic book scene, selling over 86 million copies of about 440 titles.
In 1969, Anant Pai founded Rang Rekha Features, India's first comic and cartoon syndicate, and started the children's magazine Tinkle in 1980. His involvement with the above, and the rapport he shared with his readers earned him the title "Uncle Pai".

Update :

A sad day for our Indian comic book lovers : The frail but active Pai was admitted to a hospital last week for treatment of a fracture after he fell from a staircase. On Thursday Feb 24th 2011 , Pai suffered a massive heart attack and breathed his last around 5 p.m. He was 81 and is survived by his wife Lalitha .

Thank You for exposing us to the glorious history of India and the marvelous folk tales and stories told from generation to generation via Amar Chitra Katha.

Dr. A. N. Krishna Rao (1908-1971)popularly known as Anakru, was one of Karnataka's famous novelist. He was popularly known as Kadambari Sarvabhouma (Emperor of Novels).

Anakru was born in Arakalagudu in Hassan District of Karnataka, India. His father was Narasingaraya and mother Annapurnamma.The period Anakru entered the literary world, was one when there was not Kannada readership, nor sale of books. From such shackles of literary traditionalism, Anakru liberated the Kannada reader. Through his first novel was Jeevana Yatre.Subsequently, he wrote Udayaraaga, Sandhyaaraagaa, Mangalasutra, Natasarvabhouma, Sahithyarathna, Taayiya Karulu, Grihalakshmi, Taayi Makkalu, Aasheervada and Anugraha which won him great popular name Kadambari Sarvabhouma.His literary output exceeded 80,000 pages.Then came the social reform when he wrote Nagna Sathya, Shani Santaana and Sanje Gaththalu, that threw light on the issues of prostitution, the traditionalists and protagonists of religion were shaken and called him a "vulgar writer" for writing on such a subject. "if telling the truth is vulgar, then I am a vulgar writer; if the act of covering with a cloth, a downtrodden, helpless, naked woman on the street is vulgar, then I am a vulgar writer" was Anakru's reply. It is an irony that the very same people who criticized Anakru, wrote on the same subject later.

Anakru’s contributed significantly to the growth of Kannada culture. He inspired an entire generation of Kannadigas and was the pioneer who instilled the Kannada reading habit and a value for Kannada. He also worked towards Integration of Karnataka. Once introducing him to an audience, one of Kannada's other major writer Maasti Venkatesh Iyengar said “I am a Tamil Kannadiga, Sir Mirza Ismail is a Muslim Kannadiga, and Anakru is a pure Kannadiga”. This tribute from a literary like Maasti mirrors of Kannada fervor Anakru was known for.

A. N. Krishna Rao acted as the president of the 43rd Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Manipal. Anakru was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Karnataka State award. Mysore University awarded Anakru a honorary doctorate in literature.
Based on Anakru's fiction Sadhyaraga, the Kannada movie Sandhyaraga released in 1966 was a hit movie.

The house, in Visvesvarapuram Bangalore of the first Kannada chaluvaligar, which had been a meeting place for writers during Anakru's lifetime is now being used as a footwear godown. Lot of people had urged the Government to convert this house into a memorial. But from almost 10 years this is still pending. Government said that the ownership of the building had to be ascertained before converting it into a memorial.

BeeChi, (1913-1980) was a well-known humorist in the Kannada language. His real name was Rayasam Bheemasena Rao. He preferred to write his pen name bilingually as ಬೀchi. He was also known as Karnataka's George Bernard Shaw..

Beechi was born in the year 1913 in Harapanahalli in the Davanagere district of Karnataka state, India. His father was Srinivas Rao and mother was Bharatamma. He discontinued studies after SSLC and joined a Government office as an attender.Having no formal exposure to Kannada or its literature, Beechi was motivated towards Kannada literature after reading A. N. Krishna Rao's novel Sandhyaraga on a long train journey. He considered A. N. Krishna Rao as his guru.

Beechi's writings were humour-based, and his first novel was Dasakoota, published when he was 32.His primary character was timma (ತಿಂಮ) (Used in Kannada to denote a man who is considered silly/crazy). Beechi released a lot of books with timma in the title. Churning out novels at a prolific rate, he wrote around 60 books in his lifetime.

His autobiography, entitled Nanna bhayagraphy, met with some controversy upon its release. References within the book to Omar Khayyam's 'Rubaiyyat' and how the great Kannada poet G. P. Rajaratnam seemed to have been inspired by it greatly sparked much anger in Rajaratnam and Rajaratnam is said to have written his 'Nirbhayagraphy' in protest.

ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ - Yakshagana

Yakshagana is a dance drama popular in the state of Karnataka. It is believed to have evolved from pre classical music form and theatrical arts. Yakshagana is popular in the districts of Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod district of Kerala. This would be considered to be a form of opera in western eyes. Actors wear costumes and enact the various roles. Traditionally, Yakshaganas would go on all night. It is sometimes simply called as Aataa in both Kannada and Tulu.

Yakshagana consists of a Himmela (background musicians) and a Mummela (dance and dialog group) which together perform a Yakshaga Prasanga. Himmela consisting of Bhagawata who is also the singer, Maddale, Hormonium for drone and loud drums. The music is based on pre-Karnataka Sangeetha Ragas characterised by melodic patterns called Mattu and Yakshagana Talas. Yakshagana performance begins at the twilight hours with the beating of several fixed compositions on drums called Peetike, for up to an hour before the 'actors' get on the stage. The actors wear resplendent costumes, head-dresses, and painted faces which they paint themselves. A performance usually depicts a story from the Hindu epics and puranas. It consists of a narrator(Baghawatha) who either narrates the story by singing or sings precomposed dialogs of a character, backed by musicians playing on traditional musical instruments as the actors dance to the music, with actions that portray the story as it is being narrated. It is not uncommon for actors to get into philosophical debates or arguments without going out of the framework of the character being enacted.

There are two variants of Yakshagana. The two styles differentiate from one another through the instruments played & costumes displayed.

The Tenkutittu style, is prevalent in Southern areas of South Canara, that is, from Mulki to Kasargod. One notable practitioner of Tenkutittu style Yakshagana was the late Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat.

The second variation, the Badagutittu style is prevalent in Northern parts of South Canara, from Padubidri to Byndoor and North Kanara District. The Badagutittu style was popularized by Shivram Karanth's Yakshagana Mandira at Saligrama village in Dakshina Kannada. Keremane Shivarama Heggade, the founder of the Yakshagana troupe, Idagunji Mahaganapathi Yakshagana Mandali is an exponent of this style of Yakshagana. He is also the first Yakshagana artist to receive the Rashtrapati Award.

Keremane Shivarama Hegde was born in Keremane, Honnavar taluk of the Uttara Kannada district on 21 June, 1908. He could not complete his primary education because of poverty and to earn a living he had to do odd jobs like driving a bus and booking tickets. He started performing Yakshagana from a young age of age of 14 and in the year 1934, he started his own troupe called as Idagunji Mahaganapathi Yakshagana Mandali. A famous temple of the God is located in the village of Idagunji in the Uttara Kannada district. He toured around the state of Karnataka with his troupe and started earning various awards for his efforts. He won the state award in 1965, Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1970 and a Rajyotsava Award in 1985. The highest award won by him was the Rashtrapati Award. His autobiography called as Nenapina Rangasthala was recorded on cassette by G S Bhat in 1981 and published as a book by the Akshara Prakashana, Heggodu in the year 1996.

Kermane Shambhu Hegde, son of Shivarama Hegde also entered the field of Yakshagana like his father and also earned various awards including the Sangeet Natak Akademi award. He brought in changes to the Yakshagana tradition by introducing truncated versions of the art form to make it more acceptable to people outside its traditional base. He went on to become the chairman of the Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy. He has also acted in films and won the Karnataka State Film award for his supporting role in the Kannada film, Parva in the year 2001-2002. He is a member of the Governing body of the South Zone Cultural Centre and also a member of Rangasamaja which looks after the working of the repertory Rangayana.

Keremane Shivananda Hegde, son of Shambhu Hegde and is another exponent of Yakshagana. He has toured abroad with the troupe and was also invited to participate in the Asia-Pacific Performance Exchange (APPEX) workshop held in the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also learnt Kathak and choreography under the guidance of Kathak artist Maya Rao.

Idagunji Mahaganapathi Yakshagana Mandali has given performances all over India and overseas as well. Under the sponsorship of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, the troupe undertook a tour of South East Asia in August 2000, where they gave performances in Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Philippines. The troupe has also given performance in Vasantahabba 2002.They have also given performances in New York and Atlanta.

Update : Keremanmanmane Shambhu Hegde, a renowned Yakshagana artiste and former president of state Yakshagana and Janapada Academy, died of cardiac arrest at Idagunji, his native place at 4.30 am on 02/03/2009 . He was 71. He complained of chest pain after playing the role of Rama in a Ramayana episode, Lava-Kusha Kalaga (war) at Idagunji.
He was still wearing the costume.

Aravind Adiga , born 23 October 1974 is a journalist and author, who holds dual Indian and Australian citizenship. His debut novel, The White Tiger, won the 2008 Man Booker Prize.

Aravind Adiga was born in Madras (now Chennai) K. Madhava and Usha Adiga, Kannadiga parents hailing from Mangalore, Karnataka. He grew up in Mangalore and studied at Canara High School, then at St. Aloysius High School, where he completed his SSLC in 1990. He secured first rank in the state in SSLC. After emigrating to Sydney, Australia, with his family, he studied at James Ruse Agricultural High School. He studied English literature at Columbia College, Columbia University in New York, where he studied with Simon Schama and graduated as salutatorian in 1997.[6] He also studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, where one of his tutors was Hermione Lee.

Adiga began his journalistic career as a financial journalist, interning at the Financial Times. With pieces published in the Financial Times, Money and the Wall Street Journal, he covered the stock market and investment, interviewing, among others, Donald Trump. His review of previous Booker Prize winner Peter Carey's book, Oscar and Lucinda, appeared in The Second Circle, an online literary review. He was subsequently hired by TIME, where he remained a South Asia correspondent for three years before going freelance. During his freelance period, he wrote The White Tiger. He currently lives in Mumbai, India.

Aravind Adiga's debut novel, The White Tiger, won the 2008 Booker Prize. He is the fourth Indian-born author to win the prize, after Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai.
The Novel is about Balram Halwai , homicidal chauffer, is from the Darkness, born where India's downtrodden and unlucky are destined to rot. Balram manages to escape his village and move to Delhi after being hired as a driver for a rich landlord. Telling his story in retrospect, the novel is a piecemeal correspondence from Balram to the premier of China, who is expected to visit India and whom Balram believes could learn a lesson or two about India's entrepreneurial underbelly. Adiga's existential and crude prose animates the battle between India's wealthy and poor as Balram suffers degrading treatment at the hands of his employers (or, more appropriately, masters). His personal fortunes and luck improve dramatically after he kills his boss and decamps for Bangalore. Balram is a clever and resourceful narrator with a witty and sarcastic edge that endears him to readers, even as he rails about corruption, allows himself to be defiled by his bosses, spews coarse invective and eventually profits from moral ambiguity and outright criminality.

ವಜ್ರಮುನಿ - Vajramuni

For over three decades Vajramuni , a winner of the lifetime achievement award (2004) instituted by the State Government has been a "feared" and respected household name mainly for skillfully portraying negative roles in Kannada language films. He has acted in more than 340 Kannada movies. He made his debut in "Mallmamma Pavada" which was directed by renowned Putana Kanagal, and thereafter continued acting in movies until he faced serious health problems.
When Shankar Nag-starrer Vajramushti was released the prime attraction of the film was that all villains of Kannada film industry had been cast in the film. But it was Kannada's unparalleled villain Vajramuni who made his entry amidst a thunderous applause and whistles galore. People jumped on to their seats, tossed coins at the screen and danced ecstatically. Despite Shankar Nag being in the lead role, it was Vajramuni who made his audiences overjoyed. Blood-shot eyes, twitching right eye, eyebrows forever ready to shoot up,a rugged, resonating voice that spoke chaste Kannada were the hallmarks of this Kannada screen's star villain. Vajramuni's contemporaries tried their hands at other supporting roles, but Vajramuni stuck to be a villain till the very end. And during his illustrious career that spanned nearly two-and-a-half decades, he spared no big star. Vajramuni clobbered all of them, including the hero who ruled the industry.

How can a true-blue Kannadiga forget the robust, forceful delivery of: "Atala sutala paataladalladagiddaroo sari, Mayura ninnanu hidide teeruttene" in chaste Kannada? Neither can one forget the blindman he played so poignantly in Bharjari Bete, nor the feudal gowda in Bettale Seve.

Background

Vajramuni was yet another contribution of Kannada professional theatre to the film industry. Like most other actors of his time, he too came from theatre background. Till the '70s, Vajramuni had been active in theatre, playing lead roles in most mythologicals. He probably owes his fine diction, clarity of speech and voice culture to this early training. In the early '60s, Vajramuni had played the lead in Kanagal Prabhakar Shastri's Prachanda Ravana, and it was this performance that propelled him to popularity. Till date, it continues to be one of the most sought-after mythological plays. And for most actors, playing the role of Ravana was one of their life's most cherished dreams. Many have played Ravana's role, but none has matched Vajramuni's histrionics.

Interestingly, it was Ravana's role that brought him into the Kannada film industry. Puttanna Kanagal, who was watching the play, was floored by Vajramuni's performance and cast him in Mallammana Pavada. Producers insisted that Udaya Kumar would be a better choice to match to Shivaji Ganeshan who played the role in the Tamil version, but Puttanna insisted that it had to be Vajramuni. He finally had his way. Of course, Vajramuni didn't fail Puttanna's expectations and he eventually went on to become the unequalled bad man of Kannada film industry is now history. So much so that villainy and Vajramuni became synonymous. In fact, he did a number of films such as Mayura, Sampathige Saval, Daari Tappida Maga, Premada Kanike, Giri Kanye, Shankar Guru and Akasmika with Kannada's megastar Dr. Rajkumar. Needless to say Vajramuni never paled in comparison. Remember the delightful Sudhakara-Ramanna pair of Sipayi Raamu.

Vajramuni didn't limit himself to just acting. He, surprisingly, tried his hands at politics, film production, and even real estate business! In fact, he was so adventurous that he contested from the Congress party as the Basavanagudi candidate and lost. His popularity, sadly, didn't get translated into votes. Also, unfortunately for him, his anti-hero image didn't work too well for his political career. Many women believed that he was a villain and a rapist even in real life. Vajramuni, in one of the interviews, even said how women refused to open the door when he went on a door-to-door election campaign. Some women had even clenched their fists, taken the name of a character he had played in a film, and cursed him! He also sadly admitted how, when his kids were young, they would be scared to come to him.

During this time he also produced five Kannada films. He stopped acting in films when he developed multiple complication and was on dialysis. On January 5, 2005 following kidney failure he passed in Bangalore, leaving behind a wife and three sons.
As President of Jayanagar cooperative bank he has been instrumental in providing sites for more than 100 artistes and technicians in Padmanabhanagara in Bangalore.

Sadly, the man who was the king of Kannada industry for such a long time went into oblivion with his illness. In this passage of time, many villains came, his contemporaries passed away, heroes became villains, but none could take Vajramuni's place.

Master Kishan Shrikant

Master Kishan Shrikanth is bringing more fame to India than any other youngster today. Born to the Shrikanth-Shylaja couple in Karnataka on January 6, 1996, this young chap is all set to enter the Guinness Book as the youngest film director at the age of 10.
He has more cinematic success than many older professionals.Kishan Shrikant, who’s in the Guiness Book for being the world’s youngest director. He bagged 3 awards at the Cairo International Film Festival for his film "Care of Footpath" on street children.
Besides, directing the project, Kishan is also playing the lead role. He has also written the story and is quite knowledgeable about calling shots from behind the camera. His cinematography and directional skills were acquired during his acting days from the age of 6 .
While most children his age spend time watching movies, Kishan Shrikanth of Bangalore prefers to call the shots from behind the camera.
The film won the Children’s Jury Award, the Special International Jury’s Award and a third special achievement award. In the past such awards have been given to superstars such as Amitabh Bachchan.
Says the young director, "The journalists of Cairo press made a group, and the movie was screened in a private theatre. They then presented an achievement award to me. They told me that this same trophy is there with Mr Amitabh Bachchan and you have got a similar one and so I was really happy hearing that."
Besides working behind the camera, Kishan has acted in many regional language films, and now looks forward to future ventures, such as a Hindi film in 2010.When Kishan, who idolises Steven Spielberg, is not shooting he’s busy researching new scripts, planning his next shots and discussing new scenes.
“Care of Footpath” tells the story of a street urchin who gets to go to school and makes it big, his example meant to be an inspiration for millions of street children, says Kishan.

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಭಾರತದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ದಾಕ್ಷಿಣಾತ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ೧೯೭೩ ಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಹೆಸರು "ಮೈಸೂರು ರಾಜ್ಯ" ಎಂದಿದ್ದಿತು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಮೊದಲ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಮೈಸೂರು ಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿದ್ದು (೧೯೫೦ ರಲ್ಲಿ). ೧೯೫೬ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
"ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ" ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ವ್ಯುತ್ಪತ್ತಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿವೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಒಪ್ಪಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರುವ ವ್ಯುತ್ಪತ್ತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಎಂಬುದು "ಕರು+ನಾಡು" ಎಂಬುದರಿಂದ ವ್ಯುತ್ಪತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದೆ. ಕರು ನಾಡು ಎಂದರೆ "ಎತ್ತರದ ಪ್ರದೇಶ" ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ಸರಾಸರಿ ಎತ್ತರ ೧೫೦೦ ಅಡಿ ಇದ್ದು ಇದು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸರಾಸರಿ ಎತ್ತರವುಳ್ಳ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಕ್ಕೆ ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಸಮುದ್ರ, ವಾಯವ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಗೋವ ರಾಜ್ಯ, ಉತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ, ಪೂರ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಆಂಧ್ರ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಆಗ್ನೇಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ನೈರುತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕೇರಳ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ.

ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಭೌಗೋಳಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಿವೆ:
ಕರಾವಳಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶ - ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಸಮುದ್ರದ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ ತಗ್ಗಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶ, ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಮಳೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟಗಳು - ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಸಮುದ್ರದ ತೀರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಾಗುವ ಪರ್ವತ ಸರಣಿ, ಸರಾಸರಿ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ೯೦೦ ಮೀ ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಸಹ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಮಳೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಬಯಲು ಸೀಮೆ - ದಖನ್ ಪ್ರಸ್ಥಭೂಮಿ, ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಒಳನಾಡು, ಮಳೆ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಇರುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶ
೨೦೦೧ ರ ಜನಗಣತಿಯಂತೆ, ೫ ಕೋಟಿಗೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಇರುವ ಹತ್ತು ಭಾರತೀಯ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕವೂ ಒಂದು. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಮಾತ್ರ ೧೦ ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಜನಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ನಗರ. ಇತರ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ನಗರಗಳೆಂದರೆ ಮೈಸೂರು,ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ-ಧಾರವಾಡ, ಮಂಗಳೂರು, ದಾವಣಗೆರೆ, ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿ, ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳಗಾವಿ.
ಭಾರತದ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಯ ಶೇ. ೯೦ ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

Karnataka is a state in the southern part of India. It was created on November 1, 1956, with the passing of the States Reorganization Act. Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was renamed Karnataka in 1973. Karnataka is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Goa to the northwest, Maharashtra to the north, Andhra Pradesh to the east, Tamil Nadu to the southeast, and Kerala to the southwest. It is the eighth largest Indian state by area, the ninth largest by population and comprises 29 districts. Kannada is the official and most widely spoken language.
The state has three principal geographical zones: the coastal region of Karavali, the hilly Malnad region comprising the Western Ghats and the Bayaluseeme region comprising the plains of the Deccan plateau. The highest point in Karnataka is the Mullayanagiri hills in Chikkamagaluru district which has an altitude of 1,929 metres (6,329 ft). Some of the important rivers in Karnataka are the Kaveri, the Tungabhadra, the Krishna and the Sharavathi.Karnataka experiences four seasons. The winter in January and February is followed by summer between March and May, the monsoon season between June and September and the post-monsoon season from October till December. Agumbe in the Shimoga district receives the second highest annual rainfall in India.The highest recorded temperature was 45.6 °C (114 °F) at Raichur and the lowest recorded temperature was 2.8 °C (37 °F) at Bidar.
