Recently, William Mapother (Ethan Rom from LOST) viewed a festival cut of the film The New Sudan. His words, “Congratulations on a very clear and affecting film. Can we discuss details about my possible participation?”

We did discuss his participation, less than a day later. He agreed to do all the narrative work for the film and him and I were in the studio in less than a week. This past Friday, Mapother, myself, Neil Degraide and William Wallace spent a half day in the studio recording the narrative work for the film. The day was a HUGE success! Nadus is excited to lock arms with Mapother in making the needs known of the Southern Sudanese people.

Nadus recently returned from Sudan.

Our “to do” list was long and our expectations were high for our time there, but the trip accomplished everything we set out to do and more. Our partners and friends made sure that the trip was 100% affirming and beneficial to Nadus’ current and future endeavors. We visited 3 cities in Southern Sudan (Juba, Rumbek and Liethnom) and assessed the needs that our current and future partners have. This trip was focused less on doing and more on listening and understanding. Taking time to do so ensures that our time and resources are invested in an efficient and sustainable manner.

Though we did a lot of listening on this past trip, we also had the honor of “doing.” We hand delivered a couple thousand dollars worth of basic medicine and medical supplies. In addition to this, we were able to bring close to a thousand dollars worth of mosquito nets to the area, distribute them, and hang some in families’ huts. It was a true honor and blessing to share in this work with our partners in Sudan.

The following is a video of this most recent trip.

Arrest Warrant for Sudanese President

On March 4th 2009 Sudan’s President, Omar al-Bashir, was issued a warrant for his arrest by the International Criminal Court at The Hague, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Al-Bashir is the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the International Criminal Court.

This news was all over the presses the first week of march. We opened up our emails and browser pages and were amazed to see it. Keep your eyes and ears on the news for what this might mean for the people of Sudan. Already there has been some not too healthy ramifications because of this edict. (Such as aid organizations being ordered to leave Sudan because of the warrant.)

FILM UPDATE

We are getting close! I’m happy to inform everyone that William and I, along with several others, have been working day and night (literally) to complete “The New Sudan.” We’re expecting to have the rough cut done by March, and the final cut sometime in April.

Once complete, we’ll begin ramping up distribution to film festivals far and near. After that, we’ll start general distribution, including public screenings at schools, organizations and churches. We’ll also be selling the film at www.NadusFilms.com.

To date, we’ve raised and spent about $60,000.00 on “The New Sudan”. It has been a massive undertaking these past 2.5 years, one that has only been made possible through your support. Nadus will need an additional $20,000.00 in order to properly distribute “The New Sudan.”

Please consider giving to Nadus’ efforts to raise awareness and support for those suffering in Sudan. It is by far the most powerful and effective way to make steps towards real change in Southern Sudan.

TRIPS AND SUCH

Nadus medical director Milli Clark and I have been working hard to schedule trips for
the remainder of 2009. It has proven to be a more difficult process than anticipated, but trips are still planned and happening. We have not forgotten any of you who’ve shown an interest in going!

At Nadus, what we most desire is that our resources and time are invested in actual, sustainable change on the ground in Sudan. To make sure that happens, we plan our trips directly with our partners on location there and allow them to communicate the most pressing needs we can meet. Continue to check www.NadusFilms.com for opportunities to serve, both locally and internationally.

GET INVOLVED

Show.

Schedule a screening of “The New Sudan.” Public screenings are expected to kick-off sometime late summer/early fall. “The New Sudan” would be a great film to show to a school, organization, church, or just a gathering of good friends!

Give.

As I mentioned before, Nadus is still in need of resources to complete the distribution of the “The New Sudan.” We’re taking distribution seriously because we know that the success of the project is contingent on who sees it. Help us give “The New Sudan” the powerful launch it deserves!

The remaining budget for the “The New Sudan” is $20,000.00. This includes distribution and past expenses acrued for the project. Once the budgetary needs for “The New Sudan” have been met, Nadus will have a minimal annual budget. Because, of course, our work does not end once the film is released. In fact, at Nadus, we believe the work will have just begun! Please click here to donate online!

Fundraise.

Maybe you’re a poor college student (been there), a starving artist or someone who’s just strapped for cash. Regardless, there’s a lot you can do for the people in Southern Sudan, even without giving a cent.

Chances are you’ve got connections that can be used for the greater good. Maybe it’s a network of musicians, a church congregation, a gathering of artists or friends with money. If you fall into any of these categories, you can help Nadus fundraise for the people in Southern Sudan! Please email us and let us know of some ideas you might have to help Nadus raise awareness and financial support.

THANKS

In closing, Nadus is encouraged by the work accomplished on the film and done on the ground in Southern Sudan so far. We know 2009 will be a great year in helping raise awareness and support for our friends in Sudan.

We hope and pray that those of you who feel led to support this work will do so! We’ll keep you updated as the film is set to release. Thanks again for all your support and the help you provide in so many ways.

Back from Sudan [1]

The Nadus team has been back for a month now from their most recent trip to Sudan. While there we had the privilege of interviewing and filming Riak Machar, the Vice President of Southern Sudan. In addition to that powerful interview, we also captured footage of hospital patients who were victims of a cholera outbreak, a still-born delivery and various other scenes which illustrate the reality of those struggling to get by in Sudan.

I’m happy to report that filming for “The New Sudan” has been
completed. Now comes the long and tedious process of editing! Pending finances, we are looking at a winter release date for the documentary. Currently, we’re in need of about $34,000 to finish editing the film and distribute it. Please consider donating to this project.

In the meantime, teams of people just like you are headed into the
heart of Southern Sudan to begin touching lives. In July, a team of young men and women will be traveling to Sudan to work on water purification . In September, a medical team will go to help impact them great medical needs in that area.

It’s great knowing that, even prior to the release of this moving
film, people’s lives have already been changed by the message that Nadus is delivering from the voices in Sudan. Imagine what will happen when we finalize the film project and begin distribution! This is the best way to raise eyebrows, to call people to stand up, and to encourage people to give financially. All for the sake of those suffering in Sudan. I can’t wait to ride this out ‘til the end!

This is our update for now. Please check back regularly for more
updates, news and events. If you haven’t signed up for our newsletters yet, please do so by filling out the form on the left side of the site. Much love.

Nadus is off to Sudan again. This time, we’re taking one of our partners: Seed. Together, we’ll be sending a water team in July, and a medical team in September (additional trips pending). This trip will serve 2 purposes. 1.) Paving the way for these upcoming trips. When the teams hit the ground, we want them running. So, we’ll be setting up their trips prior to them arriving. 2.) Nadus will of course be filming. There’s some things we’d like to film to include in the documentary “The New Sudan” that we didn’t get last time. Could we live without it? Sure. But we have this opportunity to go back and film more and so we’re gonna take it. Please check back frequently over the next few weeks for updates and images of our journey. It’s sure to be an adventure, if its anything like our month long filming expedition last July. Check that trip out also.

For the entire month of December, Nadus Films hosted an exhibit entitled “The New Sudan”. The exhibit included children’s drawings, children’s photography, paintings and Nadus’ photography and film work. The exhibit was a huge success. The gallery opening drew the largest crowd to this particular art gallery (www.the930.org). Our good friend Valentino Achak Deng spoke on the current needs in Southern Sudan and why it is important to partner with organizations like Nadus Films. If you’re interested in hosting “The New Sudan” exhibit, please contact Nadus Films.

My son Abel and I head to the Sudan...

This title is a little misleading. Well, perhaps a lot misleading. My son Abel and I didn’t actually visit my friend Yengi Desmond Tutu in the Sudan. However, we did all go to the Louisville Zoo together while he was in town visiting us this past weekend. While at the zoo, we visited the “Africa Outpost”. Surprisingly, Desmond was taken back at how “good of a job” they did in replicating Africa.

Desmond and I first met each other on a flight from Nairobi to Uganda back in 2005. I was on my way to Sudan for the first time. I learned that Desmond was moving to the states for the first time and knew no one. What a perfect opportunity to make a friend. Desmond came and lived in Louisville, KY in the summer of 2006. He worked a full time construction job in order to pay for his schooling. This time, he came for a weekend prior to his fall classes starting. What’s he studying you might ask? This brilliant young man is studying chemistry and mathematics. We had a wonderful time together. My wife Anne and son Abel enjoyed his time here equally as much!

Nadus teaches kids about making films

Nadus wrapped up a project today at the Portland Promise Center. The Portland Promise Center gives youth and families from lower income parts of Louisville the opportunity to excel and be loved in a safe environment (http://www.portlandpromise.org). A few months back we were asked to come to the center & teach a few kids a bit about the process of film making. Well, time snuck up on us and last Sunday night, I received a reminder call letting me know that the classes were to be held the next 3 days from 2:00 to 4:00pm. My response was one of “Oh snap, I forgot about it!” but I showed up on Monday nevertheless.

I walked in having no idea what to expect or teach and was immediately thrown into a pack of six teenagers. It was a challenging week due to a ton of distractions and short attention spans, but I was driven by the desire to serve these kids & give them a memory to look back on as well as an opportunity that they may not have had otherwise.

It went down like this: Monday: We talked about films, film making, what type of films the kids like, and what type of film they would like to make. We then scripted & rehearsed the scenes for our Tuesday shoot. Tuesday: We worked really hard and spent an intense two hours shooting the film. Props to everyone for being focused & patient. Wednesday: We finally began the editing. I taught a bit about the process and then we went right to it.

I will be finishing the editing myself over the next several days so that we can premier it at the center next week. I had a lot of fun serving this class over those 3 days and it was nice to do a less serious project. My hope is that the kids walked away with a basic knowledge of film making and that they felt the love.

We would like to be able to do this again soon.
