The taboh for elections has been called to determine what the future will hold for these youngsters

There you have it. The 13th General Election (GE13) for the country has been announced by YAB Dato' Sri Mohamad Najib Razak on 3th April 2013. The crucial date which determines the country's fate has been fixed by the Election Commission on 5th May 2013. It does not really matter what happens between now and the election result. What is important is that the country's future will be determined by almost 13 million eligible voters that is almost half of total population through a democratic process as political parties leave their fate to the Malaysian voters. The contesting parties have revealed most of their line ups. Who will be given the mandate to govern this country from now onwards remains a big question mark.

Its ironic really, in this era of modern and sophisticated communication technology one cannot really predict what the outcome will be. The parties that are contesting now seem to be making their boisterous presence felt in the social media with equal intensity that it won't provide a true measurement of ground sentiments especially the fence sitters. As most of the candidates' list has been made known, it seems that now it boils down to how these candidates and their parties' election machinery perform, especially how they present themselves, including their plans for the people and country. It will also test their capability to lead and strategise the resources at hand, manage conflicts that are most certain to arise, practice diplomacy and appease their voters. This will be an opportunity to see what the candidates are made of especially the new names that have been announced.

A manok sabong (fighting cock) in a cage

Although I would like to relate the upcoming GE13 to some existing sports as the parties go compete against one another, but seeing how heated the contests are, no sports come close to describe the election in this country. In sports one usually gets to see sportsmen, no matter how hard they compete coming together to shake hands (congratulating the victor) at the end of the game.

Those sharp spurs makes sportsmanship go down the drain

In other words there should actually be no bad blood between the victor or loser after the tournament. That would be far from the actual political scenario in this country now. I still see some form of bloody cock fighting like competition here where those involved will try to beat the hell out of his or her opponent as they try to win the voters' hearts and minds.

Cock fighting usually draws all kinds of crowds reflective of a political ceramah ~ supporters, party workers, special branch, curious people, bloggers including cybertroopers who try to say that crowd size does not matter

Usually there will be the Tuai Sabong or referee much like the ELection Commission's role to decide which bird bites the dust (lost) or determine the winner. Like in elections their task becomes more challenging if its a close fight

The candidate's constituency list managed by the the Tuai Kangau usually calling fighting birds who are of almost equal strength, weight and bet amount (let's say election deposit)

The owners would want to put their best birds (including very old ones, as they still look pretty good on video) in the arena as this involves money, lots of money. In elections the dangling carrot will be the power (mandate to rule). How does one judge their birds to be the best, it all comes down to experience, analysis (in Iban usually it involves 'neglala bulu' or 'observing the feather') and also choice of fighting spur including the positioning of the weapon). For more info on Ngelala Bulu go to Asal Iban Nemu Nyabong but the article is quite lenghty and require deep understanding, mind you. When released against one another, all hell will break loose as the spurs slash here and there as the birds fight one another amidst the cheer and noise from the crowd. Sounds cruel and scary but with all those campaigning where candidates seem to be running down one another it does sound like a cock fighting environment during most times. The loser is left alone in one remote corner outside the arena usually bleeding to death, as the ants set upon it. That's why I am certain this sports almost fit the description for this upcoming 13th General Election where we have a group of owners who has many fighting cocks in his coop versus another group, i am sure you get the picture. The only difference is that in politics, sometimes the losing cocks sometimes rise again to fight another day often stronger.

So what will be the winning formula in this upcoming 13th General Election? In Malaysian politics a complicated mix of factors will determine the winner and winning team. It can be the candidate, it can be the party, what it promises to deliver in its manifesto if they come to power and it can also depend on the issue at hand. Some candidates may win by fluke due to some administrative hiccups in their forms, that causes one's opponent to be disqualified. Finally, the most important of all, it will come down to the voter and the ballot paper in his hands ~ democracy is alive in Malaysia, we should be thankful for that because its power to the people.

So marilah mari, pergi mengundi.... Just Don't go to sabong ayam ya.

I would like to open this entry with Winston Churchill's quote “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” And I say this with the news as of today, we have lost eight good men. They are our heroes who have put their lives on the line to ensure Malaysia is peaceful and we can go about our daily chores without fear.

1. Inspektor Zulkifli Mamat
2. Koperal Sabarudin Daud
3. Supt Ibrahim bin Lebar
4. L/Kpl Mohd Azrul bin Tukiran
5. ASP Micheal Padel
6. Sjn/D Baharin bin Hamit
7. Sjn Abd Aziz bin Sarikun
8. Kpl/S Salam bin Togiran

ASP Micheal Padel Arrives in Kuching

One of the fallen men who hails from Serian Sarawak arrives today at 5:30 pm via Royal Malaysian Air Force airplane from Sabah. I was unable to negotiate my way through the traffic to pay my last respect but manage to see the arrival of the airplane as it headed towards Hornbill Airways hangar from a distance. The traffic jam was caused by the large numbers of cars by people who came to pay their respect.

The farewell salute from ASP Micheal Padel's comrade

This scene is replicated in most of the other states in Malaysia to whom the brave men originate from. They served outside their home state, leaving the comfort of home so that they may serve the country they love. Nadai Nama Nama shares this sorrow and will salute them for their sacrifices. Words here will not be enough to say how sad we feel. Let's show support for our Security Forces by uniting in prayer, irregardless of how you name your God, that they will be protected from harm and danger, and that peace will prevail once more in our country. Amen.

Wishing Happy Chap Goh Mei

Celebrating Chinese New Year in Sarawak is always a wonderful experience for me. I get to go back to Sibu to celebrate with my parents and friends there. Not that I am a celebrant but the long holidays allows me to take time off and share the joy of ushering in the Year of the Snake in a meaningful way for this year itself is like a family reunion. My brother and sisters were all home at this time also. The fireworks, firecrackers and visiting sessions were fantastic, that is what I can summarise. Anyway this year I brought along a video cam to try to capture how Gong Xi Fa Cai 2013 experience in Sibu Sarawak is celebrated. I could not capture everything but its just enough to get the essence of Chinese New Year in Sarawak.

I wish to thank everyone who has welcomed us to their open house especially Kapitan John Goh, Mr. Sebastian and family, Mr. Joseph and family, and Cikgu Lau and family. From the Youtube video I uploaded it can be seen that from inter marriages it may be confusing to say who is celebrating Chinese New Year in Sarawak, but this is the Sarawak Experience. Our unity is in sharing the toast for prosperity for the good of all, wishing the best for everyone. Happy Chinese New Year Gong Xi Fa Cai, Happy Chap Goh Mei, may good fortunes shine for all Yaaaaammmseeeng!! OooHaaaaaaa!

As always I shall be ushering in the Year of the Snake in Sibu again this years as I have done from year to year. It is certainly a rousing welcome for the Ssssssnakey, as the fireworks lit up the Sibu skies about an hour before midnight. One good thing is that one needs not do is to go to some parade in town somewhere to watch the fireworks. The colourful event can be witnessed right at your doorsteps. This is because our neighbours light up the sky above with colourful sparks. The loud sound was traditionally known to have been used to chase away the evil spirits. So I guess I am not an evil spirit as I seem to be ready with my camera gear to capture the event in my neighbourhood. Here are some shots I manage to take which I feel can drum up the Chinese New Year mood. Just a word of caution ~ its taken without tripod and different exposure settings. Its difficult to get a perfect shot as the explosions were almost everywhere without me being ready. So its always an instant image capture as one cannot really know who will light up his first. Also the brightness of the sparks differ thus aperture control was quite challenging.

The sparks take the shape of the palm leaves below it as if to acknowledge the trees' presence

The bright sparks light up the church building behind it

As if to say to the street lamp ~ I can go higher than you buddy

Once again Happy New Year to all my friends, no matter wherever and what ethnicity we belong to. We celebrate this in the spirit of being Malaysians. Gong Xi Fa Chai to all.

The weather was fine in Kuching for the launch of the My Beautiful Malaysia Event this morning which was held at the Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre (KIRC). During his launch speech the Prime Minister spoke of the Fourth Agenda which is considered an important component of the country's development thrust as it takes into account the social aspect ~ so that it can be parallel with physical development. The Chief Minister in his earlier speech touched on engaging Sarawak's younger generation to spearhead this agenda as their idea matters, especially on those related to community development.

Kuching is one of the 350 plus locations for the launch of My Beautiful Malaysia. The event started with some performances by the youths IM4U Choir group, launching speech, followed by tree planting activities and officiating of the KIRC by the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

Overall it was quite a 'happening' event with exhibition by the army which proved an attraction for the youths. For me also, it brings back good memories as I met up with my two bosses in Sri Aman here. Like me they are serving in Kuching now. Mr. Bujang Budin, one of the event's main coordinator (Ministry of Social Development now)was my District Officer in Sri Aman and Mr. Abdul Rahman Sebli was my Resident in Sri Aman (now Resident of Kuching).

Then there was YB Minister for Natural Resources and Environment Dato Sri Douglas Uggah who I remember always kept me on my toes in Sri Aman as he was the Federal Minister in charge for election pledges (April 2010 Election)in the State. As the Deputy Resident (Development) at that time we have to be the enablers for these projects and hand in hand with the Resident do the best for the Division. We have to identify the red tapes which can hinder development in the Division and basically link the various implementing agencies to overcome inter departmental hurdles. So it was good meeting the Minister again and he and his wife got to plant a tree this morning. Which is why I am in agreement with the fourth agenda, as experience tells me that too much focus on hardware development is too one sided. The 'soft' component which is the social spectrum needs attention too and it comes at the right time as Sarawak celebrates her 50th Anniversary of independence within Malaysia (translated ~ more funds coming in). Our youth development programmes are in need of innovative programs that suits modern times.

Officiating of the KIRC (Le Park) by the Chief Minister and the tree planting by the VIPs

Live view on the launching of the My Beautiful Malaysia on the big screen

Crisp clear image on the stage and speech delivery by the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia

The Gotong Royong for all those present at the venue starts, including tree planting

Going back to the Fourth Agenda just now, it is hoped that the relevant authorities in the State can take this opportunity to pick up on past social studies that have been conducted previously, but shelved or in queue due to lack of funds. My brief stint with the State Planning Unit's Social Development Section exposed me to the State's Social Agenda and it is fortunate that the Federal Government has realised its importance also. There may be many gaps in the action plans but it can be addressed in phases. Social transformation is the next big thing if the State is to achieve its vision for holistic development, both in body and soul. God Speed.

My friend, Alexius Barieng, invited me to his wedding last week and I am glad that work did not prevent me from attending it. It almost did....at most times, my weekends would always taken up by unfinished tasks that I always seem to bring back home. Being the first month of the year 2013, all things on the drawing board are thrown on the office table and also home table to sort out. Draft plans which are later to be implemented throughout the year. However when I received his invitation card I did say that I will attend it by hook or by crook.

So off I went to Grand Margherita Kuching and the evening looked set to be full of fun as I was seated with close friends. Let me rephrase that, very close drinking friends. Need I say more as later we will see in the picture why. Unfortunately the cameraman (that's me) as always is the case will not be captured in the images to follow.

Entrance of the confident groom and the shy bride.

The occassion was made more colourful with the presence of the Sarawak Governor Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin bin Abang Barieng (notice the similiarity in the groom's name) and his wife Toh Puan Hjh Norkiah. Indeed the presence of the State's top guns in the Hotel's Asajaya Hall made me alert and that I should behave. No gangnam style poses when I take the photos to get the right angle. To a certain extent I did manage to take some nice shots even after we had some round of wine and beer at the back of the room. The blurry vision in my camera lenses are not due to the wine glasses which keeps emptying but I suspect its the faulty lenses....*hic*

Apple shows the way: The bride and groom during their message of thanks to everyone showed that iPad plays an important role in sharing their message. At least it shows some things in common between them for it will encourage them to share things in the iCloud.

And there was that wonderful moment during the cake cutting ceremony

The toast was quite complex in a way. This is where one has to understand the simplicity we Sarawakians have managed to put into mix marriages like this one. The intertwining of cultures which some of our other Malaysian cousins (across South China Sea) may find complex are all brought into the spirit of being one during this wedding dinner reception. Everyone was having fun, the toast was done in several languages led by Datu Aloysius Dris. The Governor and wife joined in the toast (with soft drink of course) but we did ours with wine and beer. There was no barrier in cultures or restrictions to frown at, and protocol was not so much involved as it was a celebration of marriage and after all, Mr. and Mrs. Alexius were the King and Queen (Raja Sehari) for the day.

The Other Toasts

After the official toast there was the 'Other Toasts'. Here, the bride and groom visited every table and drank with the family, relatives and friends ~ i repeat from table to table. This I have to admire as the couple were able to cruise along without signs of tipsiness. There can be no way they were hiding the contents of the glasses anywhere.....either that or they were drinking chinese tea.

Lets see what the bride and groom would be able to observe from their point of view. Seven to ten people will be looking at you when you gulp in that glass you are holding. All in one swipe if you may as they cheer you on......it makes you feel like an Olympian about to do the impossible thus the answer to our mystery on their success in completing those table to table visits. I did not see the best man help to cushion the drinks when they toast with their guests. They have trained hard for this....I see gold medal prospect.

Friends, relatives and guests had a wonderful time. It was time to do the famous poco-poco line dance for most and everyone participated..... the band was able to play all the songs and everyone could do whatever dance was required of them ~ of course the Governor had gone back already by this time.

Finally what we have been waiting for, the dance by our favourite couple that night. Everyone was on stage doing their own thing (some minus their shoes) but Mr and Mrs. Alex were doing a romantic number.

Once again, thanks for the invite buddy and Congratulations!

Datuk Temenggong Anak Langkau @ Bujang Berani has left us. He was accorded a State funeral with full military honour which he would be proud of if he was watching from Heaven above.

However he would not have been happy to read about a certain blog which picked on him and belittling his achievements. I myself was quite infuriated when I read it. These are the type of people who should be blamed for giving bloggers a bad name. Gone are the early days of blogging where one enjoys reading the local blogs. Those days blogs were for leisurely reading, for sharing of knowledge and just for fun. During my freshie blogging years many moons ago, the blog was a place to exchange ideas, excite the mind and discuss current issues constructively. The interactivity feature was considered an attraction at that time and comments need no serious moderation.

This however changed when the blogging world met politicians.....or rather, the politicians discovered the blog. They suddenly changed its function into one that is akin to a flesh eating zombie, spewing hate from the fingertips and devouring the indecisive minds so as to win votes. It is a sad state actually, for instead of being a platform for constructive communication, the blog has become a political vehicle to run down people, parties or ideas you do not like.

Nonetheless whoever the culprit behind that insulting blog maybe, we have to accept the fact that the person may not be some pea brain blogger, as the tune of the blog is written intelligently with negative tone. It takes a thief to know a thief, it takes a blogger to know a blog and intention behind it. It could be one author or a group of authors, whose agenda was to purposely make us react the way we did ~ angry, make police reports. There will still be no way to discover these cowards due to the slackness in enforcing our cyber laws . These culprits and faceless perpetrators will forever rule the Internet without any fear and sense of responsibility.

Nadai Nama Nama (NNN) is also reacting but in a different manner as I hope to show that Kanang Anak Langkau is a true Malaysian Hero. During Pesta Benak 2012 in Sri Aman, he spoke of the importance of unity among Malaysians in an interview by Majalah Tiga crew. So in response, NNN's video pay tribute to our true hero. I assembled some videos I have taken and images taken from the Internet. I am unable to acknowledge everyone so NNN wishes to thank you all as this is done for our Hero.He has fought the country's enemies gallantly and symbolically embodies the story of Malaysia's good versus evil. He represents the great warriors and their heroism which makes this country enjoy the peace and harmony we experience till now. Without such sacrifices, that blogger who laments about expensive funerals, would not be able to enjoy the freedom they have now. So what price do these slime suckers want to put on that? In exchange for his life which Kanang almost lost, what would be their price tag? As Ghaz Ghazali states in his column Tauk Sik in The Star's Be Opinionated, Not Offensive they should be called paloi. I agree a thousand percent.....in Iban I will call them belik and tuyok which carries similiar meaning.

Now, even in death he continues to inspire us, for his heroism has brought us together as Malaysians to mourn his loss. Many a times the casket in which he travels to his resting place, was adorned by the colours of the Jalur Gemilang, the State flag, Armed Forces and one white flag with a crucifix sign. Imagine the hornbill, the Crescent, Keris and Cross side by side representing a peaceful and prosperous Malaysia. In the Saint Thomas Church, Malaysians of different beliefs band together to pray according to their own faith to bid him farewell. In going to the Heroes Grave, one gets to see thousands of Malaysians accompanying the coffin carried by the Armed Forces pall bearers represented by the Ground, Air and Navy.

The blog that speaks negatively of our hero serves as a warning of the various forms of disguise the agents of instability can take. Our enemies are now are within ourselves. Kanang has shown us this real threat and that we should not be defeated by them. An enemy that spins hatred and lies to create chaos and disunity. One that will destroy the existing harmony that exists, the mutual respect we have for one another as Sarawakians, Malaysians, and we bloggers ~ citizens of the borderless internet world. All of us have a role to play to maintain this coexistence which these enemies want to destroy. It is up to us now for Kanang will be up there as Heaven now needs our Hero. As put by Brigadier General Stephen Mundaw when he spoke of Kanang at the funeral service "Death can only take what we have in the past, but it cannot take away what we are".

God Bless.

Farewell Kanang Anak Langkau

Final salute for the hero as his coffin arrives at the Heroes Grave

Today is a sad day as the Malaysian much known hero Datuk Temenggong Kanang Anak Langkau is laid to rest at the Heroes Grave, Taman Budaya Kuching. The public paid their last respect to the hero at the Civic Centre Kuching on the whole day of the 5th January 2013 and the morning of the 6th January 2013. Briefly for extra information on the funeral just now its reported at The Malaysian Digest.

Rain and Tears

On Sunday afternoon (6th January 2013) the late Datuk Kanang Langkau was laid to rest at the Heroes Graves Kuching in full military honour. The casket carrying the last surviving recipient of the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP), Malaysia's highest award for bravery, was brought to the Saint Thomas Cathedral for the final funeral rites before proceeding to the burial ground. Before the end of he service it rained heavily as if to show that the country and the people of Sarawak shedding their tears for our hero's final journey. The casket was carried by eight pall-bearers made up of first warrant officers (PWI) representing the three services in the Armed Forces (MAF) led by PWI Michael Awie.

Saint Thomas Cathedral Kuching ~ (Heaven Wept) it was bright one moment and it rained heavily suddenly at the end of the funeral prayers service

Rev Fr Michael Buma Galami who performed the prayers shared this poem 'Never Give Up' with all who attended:

Poem - Never Give Up

Never give up! It is wiser and better
Always hope, than once to despair;
Fling off the load of doubt's cankering fetter,
And break the spells of tyrannical care.

Never give up! or the burdens make sink you;
Providence kindly has mingled the cup,
And in all trials and troubles bethink you,
The watch word of life must be, Never Give Up!

Never Give Up! There re chances and changes
Helping the hopeful a hundred to one;
And through the chaos High Wisdom arranges
Ever, success if you'll only hope on

Never Give Up! for the wisest is boldest
Knowing that Providence mingles the cup
And of all maxims the best, as the oldest,
Is the true watchword, Never Give Up!

Never Give Up! Though the grape shot may rattle,
Or the full thunder-cloud over you burst;
Stand like a rock, and the storm and the battle,
Little shall harm you, though doing their worst,

Never Give Up! If Adversity presses,
Providence wisely has mingled the cup,
And the best counsel in all your distresses,
Is the stout watchword, Never Give Up!

The watchword of our hero and man of valour,
is Never Give Up, Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban

BBM message from James about Kanang's passing

On my first day of resuming work I receive sad news that one of our true Malaysian hero had passed away today. Much has been written about him ~ just Google his name Kanang Anak Langkau, The images are plenty also in the web, mostly of him donning his army uniform and that famous battle cry 'Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban' (As long as I am Alive, I shall Fight On) rings repeatedly in the mind.

What should I say about this man whom I met when I started serving in Sri Aman four years ago (2008). Before that I just read about him in the papers mostly during National Day and during Hari Pahlawan occasion. I never expected to meet him personally. Furthermore, with all the accolades that he has received, one would expect him to be a proud person and requires some protocol to address. During our first encounter I was surprised that the late Kanang was a simple and easy going person. We will always meet one another near Sri Aman's Magnum and Sports Toto coffee shop over a cup of coffee. I would call him by his first name and he would call me tuan which I never got used to till now. He will be using his favourite white round neck t-shirt. I have read most of his heroic deeds and stories so we skip that part of the story and talked about other things ~ the food, benak etc in Sri Aman. I was glad that he was granted the title Temenggong (Iban Paramount Chief) making it more comfortable for me to address him every time we meet at the Sri Aman Resident Office. In September 2011, he was given the Datukship which he so fittingly deserved.

A cheery hero and example we will certainly miss

Nadai Nama Nama salutes the late Datuk Temenggong Kanang Anak Langkau. He left too early as this year Sarawak will be celebrating 50 Years Merdeka in Malaysia celebrations. We will miss the smile and the simple man he is. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban is his spirit and he did not retire there when he was appointed the Ketua Masyarakat (chief grassroot leader with the title Temenggong) and a campaigner for development and social welfare of the people in Sri Aman. A spirit which Nadai Nama Nama sees as Agi Idup Agi Berkhidmat, serving loyally to the last breath. A true hero and noble example.

Goodbye Sir. It has been an Honour to Serve with You even for a while.

Going into 2013 with a Vrooom with my Social Media Dashboard at desmondjerukan [dot]com!

In his Forbes article Why 2012 was not the year of Social Business or Social Media, Hadyn Shaughnessy hit the nail on the head when he spoke about the need to balance between real life and web life. With that in mind one wonders with the thousands of apps for your mobile device be it your iPad, iPhone, Android devices, there may be truth in it. The development of the mobile devices in actual fact were supposed to make our lives easier, save us from the queue and allow us to enjoy the convenience of online transactions (banking, shopping, job hunting) minus the hassle. You will have apps that are supposed to make you productive in your daily work ~ those thousand apps for emails, calendars, reminders, organisers and many more. That web in fact makes social online life more addictive as you try to catch up on the inspiring photos posted by someone a thousand miles away or gasp at some news of a recent Hollywood breakup or latest political mudslinging.

Bane or Boon in Sarawakian setting? The Internet, the social media life, the mobile gadgets that is in your hands right now..... is it making your life better or is it a curse? Which is why I choose to explore the realms of social media life through my own web domain Desmond Jerukan Dot Com. It will not be a finding but a journey of discovery. The end result of technology is supposed to mean a better standard of living, a better quality of life. Is that device you are peering into now making making you a better person in real life or are you like a zombie in drowned virtual reality.

The ushering of the new year was done as it has been done every year and that was with our family gathering. The arrival of 2013 felt quite long and I just manage to scrape into 2013 as we had started the party early with my sister's wedding one week earlier.

So what is it with these New Year that we keep celebrating every twelve months, 365 days year in and year out? In Malaysia there are many religious and traditional new years (Chinese New Year, Awal Muharram, Vaisakhi, Gawai Dayak ) we get to celebrate but the Gregorian year is the widely accepted civil calender observed. This may be why if anyone in this country plans to make new year resolutions they really need to consider many options. It is not easy to stick to. Since being introduced to the word 'resolution' I have been listing mine almost every year (for more than 20 years). The list keeps getting longer not because there are more new goals to achieve. Most of the goals are the same as before. Its just that the list becomes longer as its extended with lengthy action plans and also contingency plans.....plan A, Plan B, Option 1, Option xyz.

With this in mind I have decided to stick with one resolution only this year....thats right JUST ONE.... and that is more on Weight Distribution. I notice that this resolution about dieting keeps appearing in my list since I watched Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Commando' movie where he showed off his muscles. Now the other resolutions can wait, because with the present circumstances, it will be impossible to accomplish. For example my 'No alcohol' goal for many years ago became, 'stick to wine only', and then 'stick to wine and liquor (whiskey) only', later it became 'stick to wine, any liquor and a little beer' over the years and finally to 'try not to get a hangover'. The other one is of course about money, which is the 'financially independent' resolution. This again will be dropped in 2013 as I have yet to strike that Sports Toto Jackpot. Maybe I would have a better chance if I try to win a gold medal in the Olympics but lets wait until Rio Olympics comes around shall we?

So, jokes aside, I feel my weight distribution resolution very important to consider. Some may say its a small matter but I cannot afford to renew my wardrobe as my shirts and pants seem to shrink. No wonder weight reducing programmes/products are so laku and intensively advertised on lamp posts along the city roads. Our Health Minister keeps harping on it also as it affects the nation's well being. I feel I will be contributing to the country's productivity and prosperity.

Weight Distribution is not the same as dieting or slimming down as one need to also monitor one's health vital signs inside rather from just looking good outside. If you feel its an easy task to lose weight with so many festivals and new years distributed throughout 365 days, just wish me luck on this resolution. The year has just started and we see where it will lead to. Happy 2013 everyone and cheers.

Attending my parent's 44th Wedding Anniversary Ceremony at Gerija Methodist Iban Sibu

The year 2012 is coming to a close in a matter of hours. Nadai Nama Nama looks back at what it can put into record in 2012. There has not been much postings this year I must admit. It is not that I have stopped blogging in any way. Several factors have distracted me from what I like to do best. Its more on the personal side rather than work related. Mid 2011 was pretty gloomy as my dad fell sick. Finally December 2011 was cheery as we celebrated his birthday. He has slowly recovered in strength this year and I managed to feature him and my mum as NNN Heroes.

Cake cutting to mark his 73rd birthday

Yes, it has certainly been a tumultuous year. Well, every year is tumultuous but maybe in the score of ten, this year has been more challenging as we also join him in recovery. While settling in my new job posting in Kuching (from Sri Aman), my thoughts were constantly about home in Sibu and how my parents were coping. As always its not for me to worry. They have jumped more hurdles and overcame more challenges than me. Parents being parents they will always be ten steps ahead of their children. Surprisingly they already have a list on what is expected for 2013.......and I am still at the drawing board with mine.

Methodist Iban Church Anniversary Wedding ceremony 2012

So I would like to end this year's note about sacrifice especially those that have earned the title of being parents. Ideally it should be those with the title husband and wife but not neccesary. I attended the wedding anniversary ceremony organised by the Iban Methodist Sibu during Sunday mass and a representative from the celebrants spoke about what it means to be a parent in a family. It is not only about who withstood the test of time in being husband and wife but also family growth. Looking at the celebrants I could see the parent of parent (or grandparent) are still the pillars in the family. While we are struggling to take care of our own family, our parents were already there providing a home for us, our brothers, sisters, children, uncles, aunties and cousins. They have seen us through all our graduations, engagements, weddings, and many more. I have to salute all of them for I grew up with most of them and some took care of me when I was just a baby. Their children are my friends and most of them have done well and found success in their chosen fields.

Thus as the years pass on by, one will discover it is these shoes that need to be filled. When the time comes, you will have to assume that role of the strong pillar and hopefully with God's guidance we will have the strength and wisdom of our parents. If it is personal wealth and privileges that you pursue, know that it is only temporary. The message from Nadai Nama Nama in closing 2012 will be that the love of family is our hidden wealth which can withstand the test of time. Goodbye 2012 and God Bless.

NNN Heroes

While watching CNN Tribute to Heroes I immediately went to the Mobile Blogger apps on this Samsung Notes.

Grand entrance by the wedding couple

The Registration

With Marriage Registrar Mr. Y.K Foo at Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara office in Sibu on 20 Dec 2012

The countdown to Christmas 2012 was quite meaningful for me. Firstly we survived the Mayan end of days prediction on 21 December 2012. It means we get to celebrate Christmas in a very meaningful way starting with my sister's wedding. The marriage registration was held on 20 December 2012 just before the 'end of the world' date and dinner reception on 23rd December 2012. So we have got the two dates spectrum covered to prove that love is all around and can withstand the Mayan prediction.

The Reunion

The wedding reception and upcoming Christmas celebrations always means its time for family get together, especially meeting the family who come back from all over be it within Sarawak or outside

This year it is considered a meaningful year for our family gathering as mostly everyone is able to make it back to Sibu. Its the type of get together that everyone is looks forward to be a part of, as Gawai this year not everyone was able to make it to the family reunion. It will be certainly a time for fun and sharing of stories to catch up with one another before the year closes. Moreover the preparation for the wedding had everyone chipping in their energy and creativity to make the event a success. With many guests expected to join in the celebration everyone threw in their expertises like seasoned wedding planners in areas such as ~ deco, food testing, guest lists, table layout, design, montage, photo shoots and video recordings etc.

The Wedding Dinner Reception

Backdrop for Brodie & Donna wedding. Unknown to all it was one of the things that we forgot to prepare in the early stage and thankfully with some quick thinking ideas on the actual day, everything came out all right.

Food.......yum yummy.

Another thing that we will never get enough of this season is the food, the food and more food. Restaurant dishes is one thing but the other is mum's home cooking. With so many dishes to choose from, it is wise to try just a small portion if you are on a strict diet. If you find you like it you can just take another portion bigger than the last. If you still like some more remember you can just accept the fact that diet plans in most circumstances are seldom successful and you can attempt to dieting in 2013. After all its just a few days away.

Starting off the mood with a live love song from the Masterpiece band

Guests from both sides of the families in full attendance coming from all over ~ in and outside of Sarawak

Toast to the bride and groom was led by YB Dato' Joseph Salang Gandum, the Federal Deputy Minister for Information Communication and Culture

The Wedding Party

The wedding party was spiced up with the presence of well known artistes (clockwise: Gabriel Fairuz Louis, 'Mama Rock' Rosiana Urai and the Masterpiece band) who went up to the stage to entertain the guests at the dinner

Pyred band also performed with some dance numbers which provided some beat for the guests to shake and dance the night away

Dances like joget, poco-poco, joget and sumazau (anak kampung mode) were complimented with the songs of the same tune by talented guests

Malaysian Wedding Experience

The party ended on the dot 12 midnight and from the look of it the guests had fun throughout the event. Chet Wah and Steve Hall who joined the event all the way from New Zealand were surprisingly 'sober'.

So when the wedding dinner reception concluded and the guests make (some staggered) their way back home, one thing for sure to surmise will be the wedding was a rich cultural make up of Malaysia's uniqueness. Most of the speeches went in Iban language, the wedding protocol was Western in nature, multi ethnic guests came dressed up in multi-colours, the restaurant was Chinese with oriental menu being served to the tune of Korean Oppa Ganggnam style. Its quite a sight really because one will not be able to make out if its an Iban wedding or otherwise at first glance.

Finally its time to wish the bride and the groom, a Happy Wedding and as the older brother I wish you two well and may you grow in love day by day. God Bless.

Rock & Roll Wedding With Keegan & Sandra

Recently I attended Keegan Peter and Sandra Jutim's wedding at the Riverside Hotel in Kuching. I wish to take this opportunity to wish the lovely pair a Happy Wedding and may your Love reign forever.

The couple managed to say a few words to their relatives and friends who attended and the message was loud and clear. The bride stressed that the night dinner was to be a celebration of love. The groom simply put it this way 'Enjoy all you can tonight and I will be your friend for life'. And that was what the guests who attended the wedding did ~ they had a rocking good dance party at Keegan and Sandra's wedding. Of course there were many Oohaa toasts and wishes but I figured nothing beats a true life Elvis fan who sang his heart out with The King of Rock and Roll's number ~ Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes. You will see what I mean in this short YouTube video I managed to capture (best viewed at 360p above Quality).

Good to view 'Elvis' in action at Quality 360p above if using PC

Honestly at my age, my knees won't be able to take those shake, rattle and roll punishment. I asked how I may address him and he mentioned 'Just call me Sylvester Ragam'....i hope i got that right as the music was so loud in the background. I managed to do a simple twist with him just before the end of the wedding (luckily someone's video cam was not working that night ~ *wink* Wallace). As I crawled out of the hotel on the way home, breathless, that good ole Elvis fan was still rocking the night away.

Anyway, Congratulations to Keegan Peter and Sandra. Bravo to your speeches that night. May you glow in Love and live happily forever after and Merry Christmas 2012.

The recent winding up of the Dewan Undangan Negeri 17th Session last November included the Ahli Yang Berhormats (Legislative Assembly Members) wishing one another a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2013, a Christmas Charity dinner and weddings.

Sarawak (and Sabah if I may say) is seen as unique in this regards as we have large community of Christmas holidays celebrating communities (thats a mouhful word). They are no strangers to the 'Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas' holler of the famous Santa Claus and are used to the 'A Child is Born' hymns irregardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds. As the idea of Santa Claus may be unacceptable to some quarters (reason that he dilutes the real meaning of Christ's birth) to the wearing Santa's cap, what may I ask is left untouched of the Christmas spirit? I am zeroing in on the Christmas tree of course.

Click to enlarge this wonderful view (Christmas tree in front of Plaza Merdeka, Kuching)

Much akin to the 1Malaysia logos and symbols one sees around, the presence of Christmas trees functions as a fun reminder that Christmas is near. They become part of the decos in shopping complexes, more so to beef up sales accompanied by catchy Christmas songs. Homes will also have these trees of various shapes and sizes lighted up with dizzying blinking lights.

Christmas Tree at tHe Spring as seen across the road

Now back to Nadai nama Nama's topic. So how does Kuching fare this year with regards to Christmas 2012 mood. Moving around the City at random, I usually like to associate this City with the cat due to its name, and I immediately headed to that famous cat statue near the Padungan roundabout. It is usually decorated to coincide with meaningful occasions and festivals. However this year it failed to shine so I won't feature it in this blog....not this week anyway unless some spark of creativity improves its appearance. That kitty there now just looks....duh....dull.

Up close and personal with the Christmas Tree at tHe Spring

Two notable large and tall Christmas trees have been put up in the public for drumming up the mood. One I manage to see is the multi-corporate sponsored tree at tHe Spring Kuching and the other one is the X Pax sponsored tree in front of Plaza Merdeka, Kuching. Its colourful nature can be appreciated mostly at night when its lighted up. I have yet to get the one in Pullman Hotel Kuching as its worth mentioning due to its charitable nature. I will try to get that in an Instangram soon.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2012 (in front of Plaza Merdeka)

So people, amidst this Armageddon hype on 21 Dec 2012 that people keep talking about, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and hopefully I can get to say that on Christmas day too.
A shooter opened fire at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday, killing several people including children, the Hartford Courant newspaper reported. REUTERS/Michelle McLoughlin

Why?

Today my blog will dedicate this song to the innocent children and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Someone dressed in black fatigues, military vest, walked into the school on Friday with guns and started firing away. Its truly a sad moment as innocent lives once again are lost. The last time I felt this way was during the school children massacre in Beslan Russia on 1st September 2004. 331 people died including 186 children and more than 700 were injured on that day.

This time almost 30 are dead at the Sandy Hook Elementary School Connecticut and 20 of them are children. Sometimes I can't understand the cruelty that we, calling ourselves humans, are capable of. The recent local abuse case of a young 3 years old boy by his step father posted in you tube saw what the evil heart can do. The rippling effect in the US can be felt as I watched CNN's hourly report like i did in 2004. As the numbers of the death toll kept increasing my heart missed a few beats.

The ever famous question that will ring continuously in our head ~ Why? Why? Why? Of course the gunman is already dead and that question will never be answered but again we ask Why target the innocent? Why? Why? Why? What is there to prove? As the story unfolds we will see pictures of the innocent victims, which I could not bear to see. As I turn off the television and website, that 'Why' still resonates silently in the mind, my ears and heart. The American President requested his countrymen to pray and offer support to the victims and their families. Nadai Nama Nama feels compelled to do the same even though it is several oceans apart. With Christmas just around the corner and the meaning of family get together events, the absence of someone close to your heart during these moments tend to tear you apart. Knowing that Christmas presents would have been already planned and bought for them. So to the families of the children and teachers whose lives have been robbed from their loved ones, we offer our prayers.

God Bless.

Merry Christmas 2012

Merry Christmas 2012 from Nadai Nama Nama

Recently (on 7 December 2012) I attended the Iban Methodist Church of Kuching City Charity Event at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre (CWEC). It was a fun filled event which was made more purposeful with the presence of the Minister of Social Development for Sarawak YB Tan Sri William Mawan anak Ikom who contributed a significant amount to the charity fund.

The event kicked off the Christmas mood in style with a few spiritual songs and also famous Xmas songs. Other church congregations from around Kuching attended with contributions also from as far as Miri. The young and old had their fair share of fun, songs and dances while the children acted out the meaning of Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ, they were equally excited about Santa Claus and his presents. Its one of acceptance with both significant figures co existing which make the celebration more meaningful. Honestly I have sat down with many individuals who try to share with me the real meaning of Christmas, arguing about the existence of reindeer and elves or some toy factories in the North Pole. Some quoted human creativity being guilty of making this Santa character in Habakkuk 2:18 'Human creativity, like all of God’s gifts, can be abused by sinful human beings, and used to dishonour him rather than serve him.'

But I argued that I do not see anything wrong with it as the only thing that is forbidden in related verses is replacing God with idols for worship. The only thing that Santa Claus has done so far is to shout 'Ho!Ho! Ho!' and telling us that we better not be naughty. Other than that I can't see anything devious about this Santa fella. I am scared that one day some people may start off with condemning the Christmas tree. Anyway let's not get carried away about this subject on this holiday (or holy day) season and put in some extra melody arrangements in our celebrations ~ that poco-poco element. So here goes:

Everyday is a different day because someone worked hard to make it better the previous day, weeks, months. Sometimes someone look at you in the eye and ask you, how will you make my life better? I came across that look this Gawai 2012 as I was randomly taking street shots at the Sibu Express Terminal. Folks were returning to their longhouses and waiting for their respective express boats A baby with the mummy caught me in action and looked me in my lens, as if to ask me "Hey there, will I have a better tomorrow?".

No amount of slogans, speeches, banners, book launches and all those transformation blues articles we read in the newspaper will matter if the next day is the same as the other. There is no other way except to work harder to make tomorrow a better day for everyone including little baby here.... Thank you.

I wish to thank YB Datuk Patinggi for providing the CD and lyrics to the song entitled Wawasan Berkikis Bulu Betis. I met him during the official ground breaking ceremony of the Majlis Adat Istiadat and Mahkamah Bumiputera Office in Samarahan. The song was played during the function and it was first announced during the State Level Gawai 2012 held in Sibu in May 2012. The song was played during the YAB Prime Minister's Gawai visit to Sarawak later in June 2012. Somehow the catchy lyrics and tune got the attention of the YAB Prime Minister and the song was played during the 55th Merdeka celebration at Bukit Jalil on 31st August 2012. I had asked permission from YB Datuk Patinggi if I could share the song in the Internet. He welcomed the idea and here it is now.

As described in the video this song is about Sacrifice. Priority is given to the children and education here so I just picked up a few random pictures and clips to jive with the song for youtube. Not necessary related and I hope someone with better resources can make an improved version. The message in the song emphasizes on giving the best in education to our children as they are the foundation for Malaysians to collectively build this country to be well developed and build a progressive society.

So enjoy the tune. Cheers!

VIPs welcoming Pandelela Rinong, Traisy and Bryan

It was reported that she has not returned to Sarawak for 10 months as she was training intensively for the London Olympics 2012 across the South China Sea. Though her arrival was during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays, a large welcoming crowd turned up at the VIP Arrival Hall getting ready to welcome our Diving Queen.

From left: Bryan Nickson, Pandelela Rinong and Traisy at the Press Conference

The welcoming party was a multi vehicle and multicultural event as the pictures below will show. Everyone was anxious to catch a glimpse of this VIP in the person of Pandelela Rinong, Malaysia's diving Queen, Sarawak's young heroine and the Bidayuh community's pride. Maybe that is how I should sum it up as there are many articles and pictures of her floating around in the main media and the internet. There was no protocol needed here as everyone was at the airport to be part of this historic moment. How often does one get to see an Olympian in real live, a Sarawakian Olympian some more. For me, I'll call this Halley's Comet moment maybe as the comet takes 76 years to travel around our sun (eclipses be it moon or sun happen more often). Of course I'll be almost 50 when the next Olympic in Rio happens and only God knows if I am still around.

The buses were there

Superbikes big and small were there

Sarawakians with their multicultural costumes were there

Lovely smiles awaiting our Olympians at the arrival hall

The thunderous kompang beat at the arrival hall

Drums from the various communities added to the pandelelamonium welcome

The fans were there (with Jame's right flag of course)

Pandelela's ride ~ Morris Minor Cooper was there to welcome her

Along with a BMW which was Traisy's ride

And another BMW used to ferry Bryan

The Regas Premium Auto management used this BMW to escort the Olympians

They went around Kuching from the Kuching International Airport and arriving at the Astana Negeri Kuching, Sarawak super stylo

Waving starlet arriving at the Astana Negeri ~ Apart from Nadai Nama Nama everyone wants to record this moment in history with their handphones including the driver and policeman. Halley's Comet moment of course.

Now I need to go off to buy the car numbers, pronto! Photos of Pandelela's Johan Bintang Kenyalang (JBK) investiture ceremony coming soon.

Gawai 2012 Journey

Wishing All A Safe Gawai 2012 Journey

Gawai 2012 will be in a few days and already I am able to see the exodus of people making their way back to their kampungs, longhouses and villages towards the rural corners of Sarawak. They are not confined to the ethnic Dayak community who will be the ones celebrating Gawai Dayak but the other Malaysians mainly Sarawakians who will take advantage of the holiday season. After all it is the school holidays. Bearing in mind that Gawai is only celebrated in Sarawak, so the holiday fever is not felt in other parts of Malaysia. Except for information about it and with occasional advertisements on television and video clips, not much is known about Gawai Dayak by other fellow Malaysians. The younger generation sees it as a time to be merry and reunion and some yamseng (oohaaaa bottoms up) moments. With plans for the Right Honourable Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib to visit a few longhouses here in Sarawak, it will presumably get more attention.....hopefully. Anyway, I will not go into the academics part of it. My main intention is to convey to all Nadai Nama Nama readers.....Please Please Please be careful and take extra care during your Gawai 2012 journey home.

Arrival of many visitors this Gawai be it those outside or within Sarawak is made more convenient as most major towns in Sarawak is accessible by air

Those who are staying in the urban centres are quite lucky in a way as they would be located near major transportation hubs, be it airports, bus and taxi terminals and the only grievances that they may have is the traffic jams and overcrowded shopping malls. However this holidays some of the shops will have to cope with minimal workforce as most of their manpower comprise of the Gawai celebrants. So one can say its not only during Chinese New Year that one will see a momentary pause in the economy but also during Gawai Dayak. This is mainly because the longhouses from where they originate from are, if I may say in layman terms, many mountains and rivers away, inaccessible by road.

It is good to note that the road (and bridges) infrastructures are making its way to the rural areas making the hardship of inaccessibility a thing of the past soon. As of now the river transport is still the significant mode of transport for many, especially those in the central interior part of Sarawak. The mighty Rajang River still witnesses heavy traffic of river vessels of all shapes and sizes.

So come this Gawai, the major rush will mean that people will be trying to get on whatever transport that will be able to bring them back home. It is during this time that unscrupulous boat operators may take advantage of their customers to make quick profit and disregard safety. It is hoped that authorities like the Sarawak River Board takes extra effort in ensuring that boat operators and boat users take precautionary measures to ensure no untoward incidents occur during this festive season. But that will not be so easy I guess as the riverine folks have their own 'four wheels'.....in other words, longboats. I do sympathise with the enforcement agency as it is not easy to convince these daring river dwelling warriors that the river highway is a dangerous mode of transport even if one is a strong swimmer.

This has got to be a premium longboat transport ~ one of the longest I have seen. This requires good cooperation between the jaga luan (front navigator) and the boat driver ~ watching out for dangerous floating logs and debris that can colide with the boat causing it to capsize

The mini version (Porsche) of the longboat but if its heavily laden with passengers and items it can be quite risky also

Those with road access are considered more lucky as they will have options to use 2 wheels or 4 wheels or 6 wheelers vehicles of their choice. Bearing in mind that the Sarawak roads are still not that advanced yet unlike the two to four lanes highway we have in West Malaysia, a single mishap as seen in the picture above can make your one hour journey into a twelve hours nightmare.

So Nadai Nama Nama again stresses this ~ do not let this be your last celebration. Most accidents are avoidable and the Don't Drink while Driving on the road, Steering a Boat or Holiday Cruiser or Flying an Airplane applies here. Try to resist the temptation of replying the SMSes on your handphone while driving too. In the past month I had lost a few good friends on the road and a relative in a river mishap. Do not let the sun set on your life. Be Safe This Gawai Dayak 2012.

Happy Gawai Dayak 2012

Gawai Dayak 2012 Dinner: Segulai, Sejalai, Sepenemu

Nadai Nama Nama wishes to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Selamat Ari Gawai Dayak 2012. It is that time of the year again to celebrate Gawai Dayak which is closely related to a successful harvest season for the local natives whose livelihood depends mainly on paddy planting. In this modern times the festival can be symbolic for having achieved something for the year be it in career, education or personal.

Nadai Nama Nama attended the State Level Gawai Dayak 2012 Dinner event organised by the Sarawak Dayak National Union in Sibu on 26 May 2012 at the Kingwood Hotel Sibu.

The VIPs who graced the dinner last night

The ladies VIPs who were at the dinner last night

The dinner which was held at the Kingwood Hotel was full of colours and fun as various events were presented. It included the Kumang and Keling contest, pua kumbu weaving and design contest, entertainment by local singers like Urai and Clemence Joy, ngerebah ka ranyai and Gawai Toast amongst others. Traditional Orang Ulu dance was one of the items performed during the dinner.

The top performing students lining up

The event was made sweeter as there were incentives handed out to students who performed well in the public exams ~ sponsored by the honourable guest YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu himself.

The theme for this Gawai Dayak 2012 dinner is Segulai, Sejalai, Sepenemu. I find that quite catchy. Even though one may be very far away from the paddy field, in the end it will be that bowl of rice you are having for your meals that keeps you, your family, your community going. So let’s not take things for granted as we cherish the peace and prosperity that allows us to observe this Gawai Dayak. Aptly explained by the patron for that night YB Tan Sri William Mawam anak Ikom, he pointed out that this gathering reflects unity and all members of the community are present, no mateer which ideology or political divide they belong to.

The Beauty of Gawai~ Nadai Nama Nama wishes Happy Gawai Dayak 2012 to all

OhMy Gawai 2012 English!

Oh My Gawai 2012 Mood!

Nadai Nama Nama is in a Gawai mood. When the mood is there, then its quite natural that he pulls out his keyboard and start tapping away nonsensical into cyberspace. Nevertheless it is the time to be merry and jolly despite the fact that in the middle of the year its considered a peak period in terms of work, in terms of milestones for projects and in terms of everything in one's life. But hey, Gawai is Gawai, no English words can describe that more. Gawai Leave, Gawai hangover, Gawai celebration....its uniquely Gawai.

(Picture above is just an illustration and has no relevance to this post, but my pal on the right in the picture Tuan Pele will definitely be charging himself )

I have to admit, this coming Gawai 2012 many celebrants will be converting their homes/longhouses into a court of law. If you do not believe try visiting this Gawai and without you knowing it you will be 'Charged'. Usually this is pronounced as 'CHAS'. It is a positive connotation of 'having a bit too many drinks that you feel as if some electric currents are flowing in your body and that the high voltages are making you see double and triple thus causing an imbalance in the world order'. Hopefully some Oxford English people see this and take up this as the universal meaning. I do not use the word 'drunk' or 'intoxicated' because it does not apply as the word CHAS overules them. But you will never be charged enough or simply enda cukup chas in Iban. But in this Gawai court house you can be charged more than once.

So for this Gawai, I wish to state that it will be that time of the year again, where Oh My English does not matter at all. Maybe its due to Gawai spirits coming down from the skies distorting words and deleting its meanings. Thus it will be very hard to apply the court's rule of law if any dispute comes out of it. Try visiting a traditional longhouse this Gawai and you will discover that simple words like 'NO', 'A LITTLE BIT', 'ONE MORE', 'ONE FOR THE ROAD' or 'LAST GLASS' have disappeared from the dictionary.

DISCLAIMER: Now before anyone of those modern goody two shoes points a finger at me for spreading lies like that tabloid story story in Sarawak, what I say here is not based on desktop story telling but what I experienced myself for many many moons.

So let's start.

On Gawai visiting, it is the hosts' pride that they wish to share with you their skills in making tuak or rice wine after a bountiful harvest season. So its not easy to say 'NO' when a glass is offered and out of courtesy you can say 'A LITTLE BIT' and just sip it. Do comment how nice and sweet it is irregardless of how it tastes. It is usually nice but sometimes it turns out to be too sweet, bitter or sour. However expressive and honest you are during this time try to keep a straight face and control those facial muscles, even though your stomach is trying its best to to expel that foreign liquid you just swallowed. Which is why the quick solution is a 'One Go' or 'Bottoms up' so that you are spared of long term pain finishing it slowly. However it is risky also because the host will feel that they have not given you enough as your face have not turned red enough (preferably your face turns blue or pale white). So to say 'NO' will not have any effect at this point. Out of courtesy one can try to say 'ONE MORE' of that torturous tuak. But also do note that

'ONE MORE' usually leads another 'ONE MORE' as the host attempts to show off their wine making skills. Some adventurous hosts may have prepared pineapple tuak which is different from the rice wine and which you will be definitely asked to try 'A LITTLE BIT'.

Now comes the tricky part as these the words tends to be next but in no particular order After 'ONE MORE' its always followed by either 'ONE FOR THE ROAD' or 'LAST GLASS'. That tends to complicate things because its that time when you discover that the host wish to show you that they have prospered over the harvest year and wish to share with you a foreign label liquor. Now do not get me wrong again, as when this invitation is done out of respect for you. To cut the long story short, they just wish to share their best spirit with you. So its really hard to say 'NO' at this point again. To get out of this situation you should say just 'A LITTLE BIT' and luck will be on your side if they have just one label. If they have several labels or sometimes they say a 'Special bottle'. If the room seems to be moving around you then its time to really go for that final 'LAST GLASS'. Do note that Special Bottle means some weird looking bottle that has a foreign name which is usually harmless if you take a 'LITTLE BIT'.

Avoid the local tequila at all costs, famously known as langkau or cap apek. This langkau or cap apek is usually volatile ~ just the smell of it is enough to send you running helter skelter. Then again you can say 'NO' or try a 'LITTLE BIT'. Finally after that 'LAST GLASS' and 'ONE FOR THE ROAD' and before leaving the bilik of the kind host there will be a proposed 'TOAST' led by either you or the host. During each toast everyone in the bilik will have to say a few words for each glass of toast and round off with an Ooohaaaaa! shout. Phew....when am I going to end this.....okay right after you have that FINAL TOAST its time to go and visit the next bilik in the longhouse. The same routine is expected in here and usually the next host will whisper to you, I have a special bottle......that you must try a 'LITTLE BIT'. So if the longhouse you are visiting has moe than 40 biliks......the best English word that may not have meaning for you now is Good Luck.

On a final note I wish to advice all Gawai Dayak celebrants be it hosts or visitors, please do not drink and drive. This is where you will really, really, be CHARGED and it will be by the PDRM Police. That traffic cop will be testing your breath and ask you 'CUKUP CHAS'? (CHARGED ENOUGH?) and you can tell him that you only had 'A LITTLE BIT' even though you drove on the wrong side of the road. Then you will be charged by King Robert in the Court of Law and no fancy lawyers with names like Johnny Walker, Jim Beam or Jack Daniels can save you.

Finally my ONE FOR THE ROAD toast wish in English for this post is 'HAVE A PROSPEROUS & HAPPY GAWAI DAYAK 2012', LET's GO CHARGING.

Benak's New Friends

Cassidy & Henry Up Close and Personal With Ben

Pesta Benak 2012 was some sort of homecoming for me as I managed to visit Sri Aman to experience a day's adventure. The carnival was held from 6-8 April 2012. Though I started early from Kuching that Saturday, traffic was a crawl as vehicles of all shapes and sizes squeezed themselves into any available space in Sri Aman Town. Experience helped in this case as I managed to find a parking space at the Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) office nearby.

Traffic in Sri Aman that Saturday night (7 April 2012) was almost a standstill

The Pesta experience started as soon as I walked into the waterfront area as familiar faces came up to say hello. I was eager to also meet my friend Ben @ Benak and I know he is always punctual. Sri Aman JKR Divisional Engineer Tuan Cassidy Morris and DID Engineer Tuan Henry Tuah asked me to hop in their boat and off we went to greet Ben upriver. The scene from the river was a spectacular sight, the crowd numbering in the thousands filled the Waterfont area and also the Benak Panorama Park area. There were boats of all shapes and sizes, jet skis and that familiar helicopter hovering in the air. Then from a distance there was the surfers numbering about ten this time. I see them riding the waves, some surfing and some thrown back into the water by Ben's mighty waves. I know how that feels, as I have tasted the waters of Batang Lupar and may I say not in a very nice way. I still have this sore shoulder from that fall while playing with a surf board along Batang Lupar River. My knees were shaking more, not out of inexperience but more of fear on what lies below as Batang Lupar was famous for its large crocodiles. I have to say, it is not easy to pretend that they are not below.

Ouch: all in vain ~ trying my best not to fall into the 'teh c' coloured water during Pesta Benak 2011

Well, enough of that mouthful story about me drinking the river water last year. Its time to share the story of my two friends who seemed to enjoyed their moments during Pesta Benak 2012. This post will feature their adventure of being chased by the benak. The clips were taken by DE Cassidy for me to edit, but more towards getting it prepared for Pesta Benak 2013 but hey, why waste a good story about the videoman himself. Both of them kept Ben @ Benak company when I was not around. Cheers to both of you and a toast to your experience. I must say they had a splashing time.

Get their point of view below:
