We lost our Bonda Malaysia 2 days ago. Tun Siti Hasmah was an icon, and most Malaysians across generations, have nothing but good things to say about her. Many of us grew up with her quiet, nurturing presence alongside Tun Dr. Mahathir during his first tenure as Prime Minister. Many more saw the playful and affectionate side of this power couple during his short but turbulent second tenure not long ago.

At her funeral, while her grieving family paid their last respects, the cameras – both media and mobile – were trained on the centenarian who had been her husband for over 70 years, focused on his personal grief. This was the image and video that was posted, copied and reposted over and over with various commentary by online media and individuals.

Individuals who went to pay their respects took the opportunity to take a selfie with the grieving man, in what may be the grossest intrusion of personal space at the most private moment.

Online ‘experts’ have also emerged in the last 2 days with social media posts about the late Tun Siti Hasmah, sending out content that is but a list of facts that could be easily googled, or in this age of AI, ChatGPT-ed. Suddenly, everyone was a Tun Siti Hasmah expert for that 1-2 days.

The only thing I could think of when I saw all this was – where has our humanity gone?

When has one man’s personal grief become so much fodder to feed the masses who are hungrily consuming content? When has one person’s life been reduced to an Instagram carousel of information tidbits, intended to keep you scrolling, so you continue to help feed their algorithm to boost their accounts?

When has humanity given way to that insatiable need to create content?

It isn’t only in this situation that I’ve noticed it, but it has been the most apparent in recent times. In the past, in the day of newspapers, some of the vernacular papers indulged in sensational news and photos like these – photos of accident or crime victims used to be splashed across the pages, for content, because sensationalism sells papers.

These days that everyone has a mobile phone, and is a ‘content creator’, sensationalism has gone mainstream. Everyone wants to ‘go viral’, to insert themselves into the news cycle. Everyone with the help of AI is now an ‘expert’. Everyone who has a script and a DJI mic in hand can now yap before a camera on all sorts of topics du jour.

Tomorrow, a new piece of news breaks and these content vultures descend on their next victim, tearing it to shreds to feed their hungry content machine – humanity be damned.

So much of my life in the last few years has been filled with dogs, their food, what to feed, and running my business. It’s been all consuming, and while it’s been very fulfilling to grow it from a seed of an idea, to what it is today, I sometimes hanker after my older, more ‘glamorous’ life.

Having a sticky little pup who goes almost everywhere with me daily, and having to spend a lot of time in the kitchen making treats for dogs, has curtailed my mall-hopping tendencies a lot. What this means is that I’m quite out of touch with, well, everything! Don’t even ask me about beauty products – I don’t even know what is new, trending, or good in the market. I’m just using whatever I can find in my stash (that isn’t terribly expired! LOL) or buying something affordable online.

I have turned my mind to writing again. But less so about beauty. More about just making this a little dumping ground for thoughts that may pass through my mind, and keeping it an old-fashioned blog. Mostly, I thought to allow me to keep my hand in, because I miss writing.

And then, in the most spectacular of ways, my worlds of dog treats and beauty collided.

A couple of months ago, I visited the Supersports Factory Outlet at MBK Shopping Centre in Bangkok. It’s a great place to shop for off-season sports shoes and the like, and I snagged a pair of sports shoes at a very reasonable price. But this post isn’t about shopping at Supersports.

It’s about how I suddenly realised that my feet weren’t the same as they used to be once I stopped wearing heels.

Oh hello! I’ve missed this space, even if it’s taken me months to find the time to sit and write again. Time has been a scarce resource, and while I have tried to be better at managing my time, I’ve underestimated the time I’ve needed to spend in the kitchen.

If you are unaware, I presently run a commercial kitchen making treats for pets (dogs, mainly). Not ever having operated a commercial kitchen before, it has been a steep learning curve, especially once we took the steps to take ourselves out of the home kitchen, and into a commercial space. That said, it has been very rewarding, and I would not have it any other way at this point in time!

What the long hours and late nights at work has meant is that I have had far less time to spend on an extensive skincare routine; and if I’m to be honest, it hasn’t been all that bad! In fact, it has taught me a few things about excesses.

There was a recent sale on the Altruist Sunscreen on shopee, so I shared about it on Instagram, and it received a lot of positive response. But I also received a lot of questions about texture, because I previously shared that the Altruist Sunscreen has a thicker, more creamy texture, and understandably, that can feel a little off-putting.
