Movable Type, Open Source Blog Software, Version 5 RC 1 Released

Movable Type, an open source blog software, which we have reviewed here has recently released its new version 5 RC 1. Included in this release is a new theme ‘Pico’ and many other bug fixes. The launch of Movable Type version 5 is targeted for late November.

Major Changes in this release,

Added a new theme “Pico”.
Bundle style repository with a theme.

Styles can also be bundled with a theme to easily offer different flavors of a theme. Styles are nothing but a combination of a stylesheet and images to bundle with a theme.

Config directive SQLSetNames should be specified as SQLSetNames 0 in mt-config.cgi when upgrading from older versions with MySQL 5.x and UTF-8
Tip: When including templates inside a loop which is using multi-blog to aggregate content, blog_id should be specified with include tag to ensure proper template is included unless the template to include exists in each blog/site being aggregated.

Backup and Restore Issues Solved,

When Backup/Restore all or website, manifest file cannot start restore.
JavaScript error when uploading a manifest file from the Restore screen
Backup/Restore drop the Following/Follower data
CF: Backup/Restore customfields of Image object

Joomla Open Source Content Management System Version 1.5.15 Released

The Joomla project has recently announced the immediate availability of its new release, Joomla 1.5.15 codenamed “Wojmamni ama mamni”.

phpBB Open Source Forum Software Version 3.0.6 RC 4 Released

phpBB one of the popular open source forum software’s, which we have mentioned here, has recently announced the availability of the fourth release candidate for the next release – phpBB 3.0.6. This fourth release candidate contains mostly regression fixes.

The following things have been changed since 3rd Release Candidate:

Fixed cache issues in feed generation.
Include default language in data to send for statistical purposes.
Revert “Parse multiline url title for [url] BBCode tag” because it introduced different bugs.
Fix sql_create_table (table creation) in db tools for mssql and sqlite.
Adjusted email template admin_welcome_activated to be more descriptive (and in-line with the changes to the other email template files).
Implemented better way to generate SID-free links in feed.php
Fixed Jabber SASL PLAIN authentication failures.
Fixed severe bugs with Oracle and UPDATE statements.
Fixed issues with database updater and Oracle/SQLite/Firebird.

WP iPhone: WordPress 2 is now available in the App Store

Automattic, the team behind WordPress has just announced that WordPress 2 is now available on the App Store.

What’s new in version 2?

A new, more efficient user interface that makes it faster to switch between comments, posts, and pages.
Various user interface refinements and bug fixes
New Comments interface, with Gravatars and the author URL shown in the comment list
Passwords are now stored in the keychain
Posts are now automatically saved and restored if network connection is lost during publishing
Added persistence, so the app re-opens in the blog you last used
Added an interface for manually entering the XMLRPC endpoint for non-standard setups
Fixed rotation-related visual glitches
Fixed errors where malformed XML prevented access to XMLRPC endpoint
Fixed edge case where local drafts were sometimes not saved
Fixed the order of photos so that they’re displayed in the order they’re uploaded

WordPress 2 will install as an entirely new application on your phone, and won’t overwrite any previous version of the app you have installed. When you launch the new app, you’ll immediately see “Version 2.0? at the bottom of the screen. Once you’re no longer using the previous version of the app, you can safely remove it from your device, and version 2.0 will be unaffected.

BuddyPress Updated to Version 1.1.2

BuddyPress has been recently updated to version 1.1.2. It’s now available via an automatic upgrade or as a manual download. This is an important security release and fixes two vulnerabilities found in version 1.1.1. To stay protected it is essential that you upgrade to this version of BuddyPress regardless of the version you are currently running.

Briefly, BuddyPress is a set of plugins and themes, which can be used to extend the functionality of Wordpress MU and bring social networking features to a new or existing installation. These suite of plugins can be used either independently or cumulatively to create a complete social network. Some specific plugins could also be used to add desirable features to your existing blog network.

Following issues have been fixed in this updated version,

SQL and XSS security vulnerability.
Certain situations where a site admin could not see invisible groups.
Bug with user access level and navigation menu items.
Double posting of new status updates to activity streams on first post.
“Total posts” number inconsistencies on profile wires.
Account deletion bug.
Spammed user access.

Joomla, Open Source Content Management System, Version 1.6 Alpha 2 Released

The Joomla project has recently announced the immediate availability of its new release, Joomla 1.6 alpha 2. This release contains many new features requested by the community. Other features are listed below as well as what you can expect in the future for Joomla 1.6.

This is an alpha release. It is intended to be a developer/hobbyist preview and is not intended to be used on a production web site.

New improvements/features since alpha 1 include:

ACL: access management for global permissions as well as content item specific permissions, variable user-groups, users member of more than one user-group, permissions are inherited, really fast
Extendable user profile, profile view in frontend, extendable user parameters
Improved com_content modules (mod_articles_archive, mod_articles_latest, mod_articles_popular)
Article linker plugin for editors
New frontend template (atomic)
Tableless com_content layouts
New backend template (bluestork)
New uploader for media manager

Archive objects and workspaces:

When you no longer need an object or workspace you can archive it to remove it from your every day views, while it still is searchable and accessible through the “Archived Objects” workspace.

Mark as read/unread for all types of objects

Until now the read/unread functionality was only available for emails. Now it is also available for all other types of content objects. If an object was modified since your last view it will be marked in bold for you to quickly notice that it has changes. Once you view the object it will be marked as read.

Tons of improvements to the email module

Share mail accounts among several users. This allows several users to read or write email from one common email account.
Assign a workspace to a mail account to automatically classify email to that workspace.
Group emails into conversations. Quickly access an email’s replies or original message from the email’s view.
Attach files directly from your computer when writing an email.
Send other emails as attachments. Just attach an email and mark the “Attach contents” checkbox.
Email Junk folder. Mail classified as spam by your mail server is sent to the “Junk” folder.
Emails are sent asynchronously. You can continue working on OpenGoo while an email is being sent. Useful if sending email through a remote SMTP server.
Create task from email. Shortcut to quickly create a task from an email.
Insert inline images into OpenGoo emails.
Pre-configurations for known emails (GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo) when setting up an email account.

Upgraded the document editor

Improved loading times. The new version loads much faster on all browsers.
Improved cross-browser compatibility.
Improved functionality. Insert images into a document, from the computer or from OpenGoo.

Movable Type, an open source blog software, which we have reviewed here has recently released its new version 5 beta 4. Included in this release is the first website theme for the “Professional Website Theme” and many other bug fixes. Movable Type team mentioned that Beta 4 will be the last beta before there are two release candidates. And, the launch of Movable Type version 5 is targeted for late November.

WordPress, Open Source Blog Software, Version 2.8.5 Released

Over the past two months, the WordPress team has been working on the new features for the yet to be released WordPress 2.9. The major focus of the development is to make WordPress as secure as possible.

In this new release of WordPress version 2.8.5, some security changes have been made to make all your sites as secure as possible.

The key changes in this release are:

A fix for the Trackback Denial-of-Service attack that is currently being seen.
Removal of areas within the code where php code in variables was evaluated.
Switched the file upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users including Admins.
Retiring of the two importers of Tag data from old plugins.

WordPress recommends that all sites are upgraded to this new version of WordPress to ensure that you have the best available protection.
