Not so fast! People need to know what bucket to put your offering in, and if they can’t, they won’t know how to assign value to what you have to offer. Tivo ended up in that pickle, with consumers not quite sure what category of products to compare the offering with. Was it more like a DVD player or was it more like a computer?

Knowing that a good positioning will impact your revenue and profits, and realizing that you still have a seat at the customer decision making table (it’s just a much more crowded table and your share of voice has significantly been reduced) you need to develop a point of view about your positioning and try to get it co-opted by your tribe. Like in most social interactions, your chances to get someone to adopt your point of view are going to increase if you involve them early on. The more say you give them in the process of co-creating your products and services, and the earlier you get them involved (preferably at the product concept stage) the more they will embrace a shared view of the brand and product positioning. An added benefit of co-creating products with your customers is that those who are involved in the design of new products will typically
...

Some pundits will tell you that you should do away with brand messaging and positioning all together, since you cannot control it anyway. After a number of questions and still no clue what the guy does for a living the auditor finally asks, “What exactly would you say you do here?” The employee ends up getting laid off. This seemingly obvious skill seems to escape many but for business communications or looking for a job it’s extremely important. It might even be something you want to practice. What does it say to a recruiter if you are asked about a prior job and you either obviously embellish your duties or at the end of the questions they still have no clue what you do for a living. It’s amazing how often I run into this. In addition, performance has also been improved, with Exchange 2010 shown to exact a lower I/O loan.

From a system administrator's point of view, the greatest improvement has to be the self-service web interface that Exchange 2010 offers. Inbox rules, antispam configuration, automatic replies and a host of other options can now be updated by end-users without calling the help desk.

On the down side though, it appears that Exchange 2010 still suffers from a few bugs. I suppose this is subjective, since it would be foolish to claim a "bug-free" software product. Still, it might do well for organizations to put a test deployment through some thorough testing, or to first do a limited roll-out. An alternative would, of course, be to wait for the release of SP1.

Overall, there appears to be quite a number of positive improvements in Exchange 2010. Indeed, the expanded self-service menu has me thinking of ditching my own aging Exchange 2003 installation in favor of a hosted Exchange 2010. Is your organization planning to roll out Exchange 2010? Do share your thoughts with us on this.

For more on this story:
- check out this article at Computerworld

Related Articles:

...

Web 2.0 Becomes More Popular at Work but Brings Risks Too, Report Says - Government Technology

Web 2.0 Becomes More Popular at Work but Brings Risks Too, Report Says
Government Technology
The report groups Web-based and collaborative programs into a category called Enterprise 2.0 and discovered that 38 percent of the 651 unique applications ...
Social network sites explode in the enterprise: surveyComputer Business Review

...

How to Make Employees Social Media Ambassadors

As companies start to dip their toes into the social media waters, we have seen them implement a couple of different approaches. It can save money and it's efficient, supporters say. But there are plenty of warning signs for managers looking for a better way. There are hidden costs that could affect your bottom line.

While the sales pitch for cloud service sounds like a deal--$100 per user, per year sounds pretty good, there are costs associated with the transition, the architecture and the operations, according to an article from CIO.com.

Experts recommend that senior leadership explore a number of questions relating to the cloud to uncover the hidden costs before signing onto a contract for the service.

Here are a few questions that managers should be asking:

What are the viable paths to move (or replace) legacy applications into the cloud?

What architectural changes are required to integrate cloud and non-cloud applications?

How should we change our technology and operations processes to take advantage of different procurement, provisioning and management models?

How will a private cloud--built for the sole use of one enterprise--give me more flexibility than current hosting or public cloud models? What are the cost trade-offs?

The true costs of this business system are essential to know before an IT manager rushes in to sign up for the cloud. And employers oppose rules that, for many of them, would make healthcare coverage a federally mandated obligation. </advertisement>

Booz & Company “Goes Live” on NuViewHR(R) « bethotto

NuView Systems, Inc., a global provider of innovative Human Resource and Payroll software, announced today that Booz & Company, a global consulting firm that creates and delivers essential advantage to the world's top businesses, ...

Social customer service

One of the more promising areas of focus for social business transformation is customer service. This week at e2.0 I attended a panel discussion of social customer service moderated by Clara Shih. It was an interesting discussion and I think there are some good solid practices growing up, enabled by some new tools. There are essentially two "new" types of channels for the development of the conversation. The first steps outside the enterprise and into the social cloud to use rapidly growing social networks like Facebook and real time conversation vehicles like Twitter to interact with customers "when, where and how" they choose. As more and more customers become comfortable with these online public communities they grow in importance in reaching customers effectively. There's a secondary use case for real time conversation tools like Twitter that has emerged from Best Buys that uses Twitter, a broad group of employees and a backend system that aggregates the Tweets into a single web page, which

...

One of the more promising areas of focus for social business transformation is customer service. The latest hack effectively removes the chains from around the latest--and more secure, version of the iPhone OS.

In what appears to be an interesting development in the wake of the latest hack, Apple is hiring a security manager for the iPhone platform. The advertisement for the position was first spotted by Network World, and the description goes like this, "lead a team focused on secure booting and installation of the operating system, cryptographic services, partitioning and hardening its internal security domains, and risk analysis of security threats."

Admittedly, it isn't known if this is a new position or a replacement for an existing employee. Of course, perhaps the previous one was made redundant... Regardless, it is clear that Apple isn't going to tolerate the continual breaking of its security, and it is doing whatever it can to eliminate the last of these security bugs from its sacrosanct iPhone platform.

How much longer will it be before Apple tightens security to a point where jailbreaking is no longer possible? Time will tell, but if the endless patches coming out of Microsoft for the Windows operating system are any indication, it probably won't be any time soon.

For more on this story:
- check out this article at Network World
...

Six security patches in November, says Microsoft

There will be six security updates come Patch Tuesday next week, according to Microsoft. This is less than half the number announced for October's Patch Tuesday, which with a grand total of 13 patches was the largest ever.

According to Computerworld, three out of the six security patches were listed as "critical." Four of them resolve problems with versions of Windows earlier than Windows 7; the remaining two will patch Microsoft Word and Excel.

Of particular note is that none of next Tuesday's security updates will affect the newly released Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. That statement is no generalization, though, according to developer Yvo Schaap. The crux of the matter has to do with how sites such as Facebook allow data to be received from, or sent to subdomains.

This opens the door to various types of exploitation: From an attacker being able to harvest a user's personal photos and data, to the stealing of one's credentials if auto-login is enabled.

Facebook has since rectified this particular problem by disallowing access from other applications to the affected subdomain. MySpace, on the other hand, took issue with the severity of the problem. It argued that it would only have exposed information that was already public. In any event, MySpace has also rectified the particular trouble spot too.

Well, until the next one is discovered...

Basically, it is now possible for an attacker with the right tools to execute a man-in-the-middle attack to hijack a bona fide SSL session.

To underscore the severity, Steve Dispensa wrote in a statement: "All SSL libraries will need to be patched, and most client and server applications will, at a minimum, need to include new copies of SSL libraries in their products. Most users will eventually need to update any software that uses SSL."

You can check out their blog here for more information.

For more on this story:
- check out this article at InformationWeek

Related
...

Sales of Windows 7 exceed that of Vista

The results are in: Microsoft sold significantly more copies of the Windows 7 operating system in the week after its official launch than was achieved by Windows Vista in 2007. To be precise, Microsoft achieved sales that were 234 percent higher for Windows 7 than Vista.

While this must be good news to Microsoft executives, it seems that the company's initial expectations could have been even higher. Indeed, analyst with the NPD Group, Stephen Baker noted that while this was good, he "wouldn't call it great."

A tough economy together with reluctance on the part of retailers to give up on Windows XP or Vista resulted in poorer than expected performance, says Baker. Despite outselling Windows Vista, Windows 7 has only brought about an 82 percent revenue increase over its predecessor so far. This was attributed partly to steep discounts that were dished out during the pre-sale period for Windows 7.

Of course, it'll be a while yet before Windows 7 even achieves parity in terms of market share with Windows Vista. At the moment, a separate report by Net Applications revealed that Windows 7 has three percent of the PC market as of the beginning of November. In contrast, Microsoft currently commands a hefty 92.52 percent of the entire market.

For more on this story:
- check out this article at eWeek
- check out this article at Computerworld

Related Articles:

...

Benefits enrollments work most efficiently when looked at holistically - News-Medical.net

Benefits enrollments work most efficiently when looked at holistically
News-Medical.net
"The typical benefits enrollment focuses on traditional core benefits such as major medical, group life, dental and vision," Adams says. ...

Is Social Search a threat to SEO?

I think it is. Nor, do they know how to measure the impact of social networks. For instance, friending a brand may not always result in immediate sales. So, the small business reporting that social media doesn’t work is probably not giving the program sufficient time to develop.

Additionally, like businesses of all sizes, small businesses have trouble focusing their efforts. They want to jump into Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter all at once. Now, I believe in utilizing all three of these networks, as does Paul Chaney. But driver support didn't get finished. The low-level code is in there, but the driver-level stuff isn't. And there's no app or setting in Windows to turn it on."

I have already downloaded the Connectify beta application, which is currently available for free, though I did not have the opportunity to try it out yet. According to Gizis, the final version will be ready in about six weeks, and he will likely charge for it. The software sounds interesting to me, and at least one application of it comes to mind, such as sharing of a hotel room Wi-Fi access with other laptops as well as my iPod Touch.

For more on this story:
- check out this article at PC World

Related Articles:
Hello, Windows
...

iPipeline Acquires AgencyWorks and Adds Agency Management Services - Reuters

iPipeline Acquires AgencyWorks and Adds Agency Management Services
Reuters
AgencyWorks` agency management services are designed to maximize profitability, sales growth and administrative efficiency for life insurance agencies, ...

and more »

HighRoads and W.A. However, having purchased an iPod Touch myself recently in order to get access to more e-books from Amazon, I can attest to the fact that the iPhone platform is by far the best e-book reader in the form factor of a smartphone. As such, I am not against the assertion by Flurry that "the iPhone and iPod Touch are in a position to start grabbing market share from the Kindle"

Do you read e-books on the iPhone? What is your opinion on this?

For more on this story:
- check out this article at InformationWeek
- check out this article at eWeek

Related Articles:
Google to launch e-book store in 2010
Forrester confirms e-book reader price must drop substantially

...

Vertafore Releases New Version of Leading Agency Management System - Reuters

Vertafore Releases New Version of Leading Agency Management System
Reuters
About Vertafore Vertafore is the leading provider of software, services, and information to the insurance distribution channel including independent agents, ...

and more »

Netvibes Goes From Web 2.0 To Enterprise 2.0 In Partnership With ...

In the Web 2.0 heyday, Netvibes had that star appeal that few companies ever experience. Well, so are we, but there is concrete evidence out there now that things are changing as the soured economy gives way to a rebound.

Computer World has come up with a list of 10 signs pointing to an IT upturn. Take a look at evidence from the third quarter and you'll feel optimistic, too. Here are a few of the indications:

The Obama stimulus plan has set aside billions of dollars for clean technology. That's already being reflected in companies that deal with this industry. For example, SunPower Corp's third quarter revenue was $466 million, compared with $298 in the second quarter.

Venture capital investments are increasing. In Q3, there was a 17 percent increase to $4.8 billion in 637 deals, driven by clean tech investments.

Hard drive maker Western Digital Corp. said last week that finished its most recent quarter with 44.1 million hard drive shipments, compared with 39.4 million shipments same quarter last year.

Apple Computer Inc. sold 3.05 million Macs during the third quarter, a 17 percent increase over the year-ago quarter, providing evidence that for consumers, some things are indispensable.

The beauty of Computer World's list is that it looks at specific companies to see how well individual firms are doing. And it is finding many that are doing quite well, thank you very much. That doesn't mean the recession is over or that it's time to let your guard down. It just means that the news is no longer grim and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

For more on 10 ways the tech economy is getting better:
- see this Computerworld.com
...

The Scary Economics of Crowdsourcing - ebizQ

The Scary Economics of Crowdsourcing
ebizQ
... 2009 11:20 AM 0 0 Vote 0 Votes One of the emerging phenomena associated with Web 2.0 — and one of the themes of the Enterprise 2.0 conference, ...

BYOT - Bring Your own Technology

Spent some time Sunday morning (the extra hour of 'sleep' we got in the US), reading some excerpts from a book titled 'The Tower and the Cloud', Chapter One : 'The Gathering Cloud: Is this the End of the Middle' by Richard Katz.

The book is an examination of the technological changes and forces at work that will dramatically impact and inevitably alter the structure and delivery of higher education in the US and worldwide.
