I’ve recently discovered a website that has been started to sell stock photos.  It’s Graphic Leftovers, “a microstock site for designers by designers” with a good 52% commission and a nice look. I decided to upload there all my portfolio also because they have a gorgeous  iSyndica API feature that let you distribute, from the iSyndica Syndicate tab, all your images with just a couple of clicks, after the definition of the channel with the API Key provided by the GraphicLeftovers account. Nothing else, no categories, no unfinished files to review, no other actions on the GraphicLeftovers site: you will find your photos directly online if approved!

We asked Kelly Jay of Digital Leftovers to talk about their project and their vision of stock photography from a “native designer” perspective.

Graphic Leftovers started 2 years ago as a site for artists to sell unused or “leftover” artwork from projects. We started with only 200 images (mostly mine) and then others joined. Since then, professional artists and photographers have joined our community making Graphic Leftovers one of the best sites for member-generated vectors and images. We currently have over 100,000 images and growing at a very fast pace.

The site originally only provided vector artwork, but we found that buyers were seeking “graphic” style images as well. We started to accept photos as part of our site back in november of 2009. Graphic Leftovers is still unique compared to the big microstock sites in that we only provide photographic images of nature, backgrounds, textures, objects and conceptual images but we do not offer people or model shots. Our focus is to stay graphic oriented.

The addition of photos to our site has been wonderful. Vector buyers are enjoying the photo options and the availability of more choices.

This offers European stock photo and illustration buyers far more choice and relevance when searching for microstock imagery and we’ve now got more than half a million images on our database.

We see microstock becoming more and more central to publishing going forward. Our survey found that in the UK marketing sector alone, 44 per cent of professionals legally download between one and five pictures each month, while seven per cent buy more than 11 stock images each month. In fact, while nearly half (48 per cent) do not have a microstock image budget, five per cent spend in excess of £100 each month on images, so there is huge demand out there.

Photocase Search Update: similar photos, sort function, mouse-over preview

Berlin, Germany, Mar. 1, 2010. Photocase CEO Frank Erler announced today that Photocase upgraded their search engine in a move that will improve search efficiency and relevancy.

“Photocase has always had a great search engine, and this update improves upon the already great system. We’ve added some great new features like Similar Photos, and improved our search results to include a new sort function. Buyers can now get better search results and then use our new Similar Photos button to brainstorm by viewing similar and related photos.”

How a photo performs (rated by a combination of views, clicks, faves, comments and downloads) will now have a direct effect on our new Sort function, which gives users the ability to sort user searches by Relevance, Date and Interestingness. The Similar Photos system is also a big improvement. When a user searches for a photo and finds a great one and wants to see more like it, they can simply click the = icon below the image and they will instantly be presented with a selection of similar photos.

 In addition to the search updates, the Photo Detail page has been reworked based on suggestions and comments made by our buyers. The page now is easier to use and to navigate and will make it easier for buyers to download that perfect Photocase photo.

Also added is a mouse-over preview, where users can simply move their cursor over the thumbnail in the search results page to see a larger version of the photo.

 “We spent a long time developing these changes and upgrades and we’re really excited that we now get to show them off,” said Erler. “Improving the search efficiency and relevancy gives another powerful tool to our users so they can find that perfect Photocase photo quickly and get back to creating great designs. These upgrades and changes will have a hugely positive effect on the quality of the search results, resulting in a better overall user-experience.”

February gave back my standard value of microstock incomes, filling the gap observed  the month before.

Here my classic six months earning comparison chart:

• standard performance for Fotolia, Dreamstime and Shutterstock
• last direct incomes from StockXpert (next month I will put it in the “Others”, what a pity!)
• the good Depositphotos affiliation incomes (more than 50$)  are not included; also some sells registered there
• some “movements” at Veer and Panthermedia, you can see that the “Others” component is increasing
• monthly overall RPI (total earnings / average portfolio size) is again about 0.6, with an average portfolio of 200+ photos over 10+ agencies

Il 9 Giugno prossimo si terrà in Europa, a Dublino, un importante evento per il mondo del Microstock: Cepic New Media Conference. L’organizzazione è a cura del CEPIC, Centro dell’Industria dell’Immagine, ed il gran manovratore sarà Lee Torrens, che molti dei miei lettori sicuramente conoscono come una delle voci più significative in ambito microstock con il suo microstockdiaries.

Introduzione al CEPIC

Il CEPIC, Coordination of European Picture Agencies Stock, Press and Heritage, è un’organizzazione fondamentalmente orientata alle agenzie ed all’industria della fotografia, ma ultimamente, ribattezzandosi come Centro dell’Industria dell’Immagine (“Center of the Picture Industry“) ha lanciato questa conferenza allargando l’attenzione ai professionisti dei nuovi media e dell’immagine. Tale evento costituirà l’apertura del Congresso europeo che si concluderà il 13 Giugno.

Nuove idee, nuovi relatori, nuovi temi da discutere

Il già notevole valore del Congresso CEPIC di Dublino verrà arricchito quest’anno dall’introduzione di uno speciale giorno extra. Il CEPIC sta organizzando una Conferenza sui Nuovi Media per Mercoledì 9 Giugno, invitando tutti gli iscritti a partecipare a questo giorno extra di istruzione, insegnamento e ispirazione, prima dell’inizio del Congresso (tale giornata è inclusa nel prezzo di registrazione).

Il mese che si è appena concluso è stato dominato dalle azioni di riassetto operate da Getty Images all’interno della propria galassia. Come sospettato da molti, Stockxpert ha cessato la normale operatività, chiudendo gli uploads ed i downlods diretti, invitando contributors e clienti ad iscriversi ad iStock; questi ultimi possono trasferire i crediti residui su iStock. I fotografi invece possono  mettere il proprio portafoglio “congelato” a disposizione per il rinnovato portale micro di Getty dedicato agli abbonamenti, ThinkStockPhotos. E’ il lancio di Thinkstock l’altra grossa novità, un sito che si propone di fare concorrenza al leader in ambito subscriptions, Shutterstock, proponendo formule di abbonamento “casualmente” identiche ed a pari costo: “25 immagini al giorno/750 immagini al mese” per 195$. Thinkstock distribuirà foto provenienti da iStock, da collezioni Getty, da Jupiterimages  e da altre agenzie del gruppo, forzando ulteriormente la direzione verso l’indifferenzazione tra RF tradizionale e microstock. In merito a questa tendenza in atto, vi consiglio di leggere l’articolo scritto da Rahul Pathak di Lookstat del quale potete trovare una mia traduzione. Coloro che hanno aderito su iStock – Opt-in to Partner Program / Partecipa al programma partner – alla distribuzione per abbonamento delle proprie foto, possono verificare la presenza su Thinkstock ricercando per ‘Nome Cognome’. Coloro invece che hanno aderito a tale opzione sia su iStock che su SXP, in una prossima fase dovrebbero trovare anche le foto di SXP, “epurate” dai doppioni e distribuite con l’etichetta Hemera (altra agenzia del gruppo, non si vede nemmeno più  la homepage, si viene rediretti a http://www.thinkstockphotos.com/home/transition).

Shutterstock supera la ragguardevole barriera di 10 milioni di immagini in catalogo: potete vedere la storica foto ed il printscreen della homepage subito dopo il fatidico superamento nel post Shutterstock Image Library Hits 10 Million Images. Inoltre propone una application per Facebook, analoga a quella vista per Dreamstime, che permette, manualmente o in automatico, di postare le ultime immagini accettate e/o vendute (avevamo già visto un prodotto analogo dedicato a twitter).

Pixmac ha operato una campagna per aiutare organizzazioni umanitarie operanti ad Haiti, invitando i propri fotografi ad aderire all’iniziativa “Pixmac Pictures of Hope from the Heart for Haiti” consistente nel donare le commissioni ricevute  tra il 14 ed il 17 Febbraio. Pixmac in egual modo ha rinunciato alla propria commissione con conseguente donazione del 100% del prezzo di vendita. Presto Vi fornirò i risultati consuntivi dell’operazione in un post dedicato.

Vivozoom ha lanciato il proprio blog blog.vivozoom.com, tra le altre cose invitando gli ex clienti di SXP a passare a Vivozoom con uno sconto di ingresso del 50%.

Fotolia ha modificato il valore monetario del credito passando a 1,2$ / 1,2€ / 1£ ingenerando una vivace discussione tra i contributors. Tyler Olsen sul blog di microstockgroup ha sviscerato i numeri per verificare l’impatto di tale cambiamento nelle varie situazioni e divise: Fotolia, Credits and Commissions – what’s all the fuss about?.

Fotolia e Audiomicro diventano partner nell’ambito della fornitura di contenuti  (rispettivamente immagini e audio) su Flixtime, un sito che permette di creare video di qualità, gratis fono a 60 secondi di durata, in modo simile a quanto si può fare con Animoto. Flixtime permette anche di usare contenuti propri.

iSyndica ha annunciato un taglio dei prezzi con la possibilità di abbonamento annuale; ha inoltre aggiunto nuove features alla gestione del catalogo. I dettagli nel post iSyndica slashes prices dove potete vedere anche un grafico a torta della suddivisone dei guadagni tra le varie agenzie, basato sul totale degli utilizzatori di iSyndica (il riferimento temporale è Year to Date, cioè dall’inizio dell’anno sino al momento dell’osservazione).
