What color is her body, you ask? Well, let’s talk about this.

See, there are two different versions of Skywishes. They are in the same exact pose, have the same hair color, same symbol, same eyes, same cutie mark and both are insufferably smug about something.

It’s like they think they’re so much better than us

But their bodies, while both in the pink color family, are clearly not the same color.

One is a bright neon pink while the other is a shiny pale purple. This isn’t fading or damage, there really were two different versions of this pony.

The neon pink version (on the left) is from the 2nd set of Seaside Celebration Ponies set. She was on a tropical vacation. Maybe its supposed to be a tan?

The purple-y version (on the right) came with the first Perfectly Pony set, Sweet Reflection Dress Shop, and the Musical Wishes Jewelry Box.

So, as a collector, all you want to know is which is worth more, right? Well, here’s the thing. Logically, the neon version should be rarer since she only came with one set and the purple one came with several. But since not every collector got playsets and the Seaside Celebration was a popular set (everyone is a sucker for little plastic friends and hula skirts), it may end up being more even than you think. The one factor to keep in mind is that, since she came with more accessories, Neon Skywishes will be worth more mint in box than Perfectly Pony Skywishes who only came with a brush and possibly a charm.

“Psst! I think they’re talking about us.”

But sellers don’t often realize there is a difference so you’ll have to look closely when buying online to check which version of her you’re getting. You’ll often see either version of this pony listed as the other so by careful when you buy and be sure to ask questions to avoid disappointment.

You see, I, uh, don’t really collect G2s or G3s. *ducks the rotten fruit being thrown at her*

Wait! Let me explain!

See, I used to collect every generation. I had everything, you would have been really impressed. But then, you know how it is, you buy a house, you don’t have a lot of space, you start to look at your collection and say, “Sure, I love all of this but I also love closet space. What do I love THE MOST.” So I realized that I really, really loved my G1s and wasn’t going to part with them but that the G2s and G3s weren’t really as OMG must have on my list. I started culling the herd. I kept only my favorite G2 and G3 items and sold everything else.

I actually kept more G2 items than G3 because I’ve always loved some of the crazy G2 sets (Babies dressed like bumble bees! Unicorns with silver horns! Male ponies with construction hats! What’s not to love about this stuff?)

But G3? I was buying everything that came out for a while but it was madness. There were just too many coming out and, on top of that, I was keeping them all mint in box so they took up more room than my good ole G1s. Then they switched to Core 7 and it was like, eh, how many Pinkie Pies can one person own? So I still collect the cool stuff (you know, the usual: Comic Con ponies, Fair exclusives, anything that smells like root beer) but I don’t bother with the stuff currently in stores (though I always walk through their toy aisle to check their shelf space because I am a freak).

Then something happened. I got this massive lot of early G3s at Goodwill. I don’t usually buy G3s but they looked lonely and unloved and my inner Hillary was like, “They are still My Little Pony! Who are you to play favorites?” So I bought them.

There are too many. Two waist high boxes of them. It’s insane. There is, clearly, something wrong with me.

But as I clean them up to sell/trade something strange is happening. Maybe its because all I’ve seen is the new style ponies with the big heads and I’d forgotten how like G1 the original G3s were. Maybe its because now I can touch them with my actual hands instead of just looking at my mint in box items through plastic but I’m finding myself totally falling in love with some of them. With every batch I clean, I’m picking out one or two going, “Hmm, maybe I’ll just keep her.” There isn’t any rhyme or reason to this, I’m not doing it based on rarity (or Rarity for that matter ) or collectibility, it’s really more of an organic “OO Shiny!” sort of thing.

You know what I think it really is? I needed the thrill of the hunt. Going to the store and just buying the ponies new wasn’t enough of a challenge for me. I needed to hunt for them, clean them up, have the thrill of finding that pony I wanted in a bag of Goodwill or flea market bait. Now that I’m seeing the G3s in bags of filthy boxes, they suddenly look much better to me than they did in the stores.

I’m not saying this makes sense. I’m just saying that it’s what’s going on.

I’m trying to keep this urge under control, I don’t want to be that guy that buys back their entire collection after selling it. But as someone who swore off G3s, I’m surprised to find how much I like the early ones on a second glance.

I wonder if this will happen more and more as collectors like me see them second hand and give them a second chance.

I know a lot of people gave up on G3s after they introduced the Core 7 so I have to ask, did you give the early G3s a second look and feel the tiny tug of changing your mind? Or are you done with G3s for good?

PS: Because I have like 9 million G3s, expect a bunch of random G3 posts as I sort through them all.

Saturday, July 17th, at the 2010 My Little Pony Convention, Summer Hayes is going to release her new guide to this unusual generation. What does this mean for you, the average MLP collector or seller? Simple.

G2s haven’t been as collectible as other generations in the past for one main reason: Very few people knew much about them. Most US collectors have never even seen the G2 items that were available only in Europe and even European collectors missed out on some of the smaller and harder to find sets. What it boils down to is this: lots of people didn’t collect this generation because they had no idea where to begin or even what was really in it. The info was incomplete and scattered. Until now.

Starting tomorrow, the general MLP collecting public is going to go from knowing a little bit about the second generation to knowing a whole lot about the second generation. Instead of only a few devoted G2 collectors having all the info about these toys, suddenly anyone with a copy of Summer’s book is going to know about every single playset, pony, accessory and whatnot from the second generation. Collectors are going to see whole sets of ponies that they didn’t even know existed before. And when they realize how cool some of these sets and ponies are, they are going to be a lot more interested in collecting them. The more people collecting something, the more it drives up prices. That is just a simple rule of supply and demand.

So, if you want my advice, whether you are a G2 collector or just an opportunistic collectibles seller, start stock piling G2 ponies now. If you are a collector, this will let you snag them for a better price before the rush of new collectors get involved. For sellers, this will let you snag ponies for less and then resell (or trade) them later for more when new G2 collectors start to drive the market up. Either way, don’t be surprised if G2 prices start to change and change drastically in the next few weeks as knowledge and interest in the generation spreads.

Now if you have a G2 collection that you were looking to sell, I’d bide my time. Once the copies of the book have had a chance to circulate, you should be able to get a better price for your items than you would have been able to get ever before and they’ll be more interest in the items overall.

But that’s just my 2 cents. . .

Here is the 2010 Comic Con exclusive pony that only attendees of the San Diego Comic Convention will be able to buy (at least, until they start showing up on eBay):

My first reaction? I totally dig her.

My second reaction? I’m kinda bummed them moved away from the superhero theme but it’s OK, she’s still hella cool. I know white and purple has been done before but I love the overall effect.

But what you do think? Will you be trying to grab one on eBay after the fact?

After reading this, I have several thoughts:

• It looks like we are getting new toys and ponies, always a good thing.
• When they say “new look” do they mean newer than this one?
• I’m glad they are making a new animated special. I won’t watch it, of course, but I think to know these things are out there.
• They are making a movie about Nerf??? (I read the whole press release, sorry.)

Now the original press release was talking about combining all their properties into a movie called Hasbro Factory. The movie is real and is set to be released by Paramount in the near future.

Hasbro already sold the movie rights to many of their board game properties so this could be the glorious Monopoly/Connect Four big screen cross-over we’ve all longed for. (Note: I own a knock-off version of Connect Four called Four-in-a-Row which I find refreshingly direct. I also own a knock-off of Battleship called Sea Battle. You know that you are jealous.)

But there is a lot of speculation that this could be a movie involving their toy properties. My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, G. I. Joe, Transformers, Mr. Potato Head, Baby Alive, Gloworm, Easy-Bake Ovens, Tonka trucks, FurReal Friends and more could all be together in one glorious movie.

Let’s put our heads together and think about what that movie could conceivably be like. Which characters would they be most likely to use? Is Mr. Potato head locked into something with Pixar so he’s unavailable? Does Micheal Bay have a total lock on Transformers?

Who knows? Instead, let’s wildly speculate on what this movie could be about. You don’t have to use every property, but try to use as many as you can as you share your “In world…” style movie tagline below.

And you know what site you are on so, please, shoehorn the ladies of MLP in there somewhere, hmm?

I have nothing against Kentucky but I for one am really confused. At the 2008 convention, the fair staff said they had a contract to hold the convention in Las Vegas for the next 5 years. Unless I am having a math fail moment, they only held it there once so far.

I didn’t go to the convention in LV last year because I figured I had 4 more years to catch it there. Now, I don’t particularly care about going to Vegas and I think it’s more interesting to have it somewhere different each year than the same place for 5 years straight. My husband is kinda bummed, though, since I told him he could play Blackjack as long as I could buy ponies with all his winnings which was a plan he was oddly psyched about.

So I have to ask you, what do you think? Are you bummed that they changed the location? Were you psyched about a return to Vegas?

However, that would never stop pony fans of all ages from dressing up as an MLP for Halloween! Some intrepid and crafty people have created costumes themselves and are selling them only. I’ve complied a small gallery below of some I liked.

While the ones on eBay are trying to be more like official My Little Pony figures, if you don’t mind modifying what you buy a bit, there are a wide variety of Unicorn costumes for children and adults alike. Just sew a symbol or cutie mark on and suddenly you have your very own My Little Pony costume.

After I posted the two links above, another MLP fan reminded me of this picture that made the rounds of the internet a few weeks ago (one place that has it is GeekyTattoos but it is everywhere). It is a tattoo of Wolverine riding a My Little Pony. An isolated incident, I thought at the time. But as a part of the larger picture? Hmmm…

What is it about Hugh Jackman that draws him again and again to the mythical world of My Little Pony? Is it because awesome things in the universe naturally gravitate towards each other?

Toys R Us just announced via Twitter that they are starting to stock these new MLP items so I wanted to take a look at the first ones to hit stores and find out what you think of them.

Let’s take a look at four of these new ponies in this new pose and style:

My Little Pony Rainbow Dash

My Little Pony Cheerilee

My Little Pony Styling Pony Pinkie Pie

My Little Pony Winter Sweetie Belle

As a fan of the vintage MLP, I prefer that when the new ponies look as much like the old ponies as possible so I cannot get 100% behind this new look. That said, I have to admit that some of the pigtail ponies are a little bit cute.

So while I don’t love this change, I could get behind it, I suppose assuming they still make ponies in the traditional style.

One thing I can’t get behind?

Freaky purple gargoyle lady down here.

My Little Pony So Soft Starsong

Lately my daughter is gaga obsessed with My Little Pony. For you neophytes, there isn’t just one little pony like the singular title offers. There are many. And they are all girl ponies, not a steed in the stable. Actually, there are no stables. Come to think of it, they are very non horselike, these ponies. They are the color of fruit sherbet and are always prepping for some gala at Celebration Castle. Maxie has only three of their books and in each of them a major festivity is taking place. One book is about a golden egg hunt, another is about a royal costume party, and the last is the ultimate tea party.

I bring up the ponies because along with their lives of party throwing leisure, they have outlandish names. I can barely turn a page of the book without Maxie pointing to each pony and labeling them. Crazy insidious names like Sunny Daze, Twinkle Twirl, Pinky Pie (which sound like the newest designer drugs) are all part of this equine fantasy. And each pony has a tattoo on her haunch. Sparkleworks has a mini fireworks display, Meadowbrook a dragonfly, Wisteria a sprig of wisteria, etc. My favorite pony has four leaf clovers on her haunch…why Serendipity, of course.

Last night, while I was reading Pony Party, for the second time, I had this sudden image. A grouchy group of elderly people sitting around a table, smoking menthols, hopped up on pain killers, thinking up all these crazy ass pony names.

OLD FART #1: I like Minty.

OLD FART #2: Minty? What the hell kind of name is Minty?

OLD FART #1: My Ben Gay is minty. And I like Ben Gay.

OLD FART #2: Fine. I’ll let you have Minty, as idiotic as that sounds, if you let me call a pony Dazzle Surprise.

OLD FART #1: Sound like a big sissy to me, but okay. Let’s shake on it.

OLD FART #2: Can’t reach across the table. Just put your dentures back in and call it a deal.

And I bet I’m not far off on how the My Little Pony names are created. And it’s probably similar with the name generators dudes. Might not be the same group of people. Instead of old farts, the name generators might be just out of college pimply, but it’s the same concept. Name by committee.

But evil on the other:

This split personality lady says, “I’ll rule the world!” on her evil purple side but “I’ll save the day!” on her green good side.

One audience member asked [Todd] McFarlane if he could draw a “My Little Pony” sketch for his wife, as several other Image creators – including Kirkman – have already contributed. “I might be able to do it, but you must realize that Todd’s ‘My Little Pony’ is slightly different than everybody else’s,” he joked. “Dark form with the big thorns coming in, then you take that big stretchy tail and strangle people… ‘My Little Pony,’ this!” [SOURCE]

Meanwhile, over in Villainville, Dr. Doom and the Lethal Legion are plotting to take over the world. To give you an idea of what kinds of villainy we’re dealing with, they did a special cast reading at the convention. It’s plot: Dr. Doom’s quest to acquire an exclusive My Little Pony collectible. The series kicks off with a four-episode marathon on Cartoon Network September 19, and I’m strangely very excited about it. [SOURCE] and [SOURCE]
