Second generation MLP items. G2. Let’s talk about them.

Saturday, July 17th, at the 2010 My Little Pony Convention, Summer Hayes is going to release her new guide to this unusual generation. What does this mean for you, the average MLP collector or seller? Simple.

G2s haven’t been as collectible as other generations in the past for one main reason: Very few people knew much about them. Most US collectors have never even seen the G2 items that were available only in Europe and even European collectors missed out on some of the smaller and harder to find sets. What it boils down to is this: lots of people didn’t collect this generation because they had no idea where to begin or even what was really in it. The info was incomplete and scattered. Until now.

Starting tomorrow, the general MLP collecting public is going to go from knowing a little bit about the second generation to knowing a whole lot about the second generation. Instead of only a few devoted G2 collectors having all the info about these toys, suddenly anyone with a copy of Summer’s book is going to know about every single playset, pony, accessory and whatnot from the second generation. Collectors are going to see whole sets of ponies that they didn’t even know existed before. And when they realize how cool some of these sets and ponies are, they are going to be a lot more interested in collecting them. The more people collecting something, the more it drives up prices. That is just a simple rule of supply and demand.

So, if you want my advice, whether you are a G2 collector or just an opportunistic collectibles seller, start stock piling G2 ponies now. If you are a collector, this will let you snag them for a better price before the rush of new collectors get involved. For sellers, this will let you snag ponies for less and then resell (or trade) them later for more when new G2 collectors start to drive the market up. Either way, don’t be surprised if G2 prices start to change and change drastically in the next few weeks as knowledge and interest in the generation spreads.

Now if you have a G2 collection that you were looking to sell, I’d bide my time. Once the copies of the book have had a chance to circulate, you should be able to get a better price for your items than you would have been able to get ever before and they’ll be more interest in the items overall.

But that’s just my 2 cents. . .

The Comic Con ponies have been one of my favorite sets of the third generation so I was totally excited to see what they had cooked up this year.

Here is the 2010 Comic Con exclusive pony that only attendees of the San Diego Comic Convention will be able to buy (at least, until they start showing up on eBay):

My first reaction? I totally dig her.

My second reaction? I’m kinda bummed them moved away from the superhero theme but it’s OK, she’s still hella cool. I know white and purple has been done before but I love the overall effect.

But what you do think? Will you be trying to grab one on eBay after the fact?

Hasbro says: My Little Pony animated special and yet another “new look”

Hasbro sent out a Press Release yesterday. You can read the entire thing here but I just want to chop out the bits about My Little Pony below:

After reading this, I have several thoughts:

It looks like we are getting new toys and ponies, always a good thing.
When they say “new look” do they mean newer than this one?
I’m glad they are making a new animated special. I won’t watch it, of course, but I think to know these things are out there.
They are making a movie about Nerf??? (I read the whole press release, sorry.)

So let’s take a second to talk about this article. Hasbro sent out a press release to this effect so this news was all over the place a few days ago.

Now the original press release was talking about combining all their properties into a movie called Hasbro Factory. The movie is real and is set to be released by Paramount in the near future.

Hasbro already sold the movie rights to many of their board game properties so this could be the glorious Monopoly/Connect Four big screen cross-over we’ve all longed for. (Note: I own a knock-off version of Connect Four called Four-in-a-Row which I find refreshingly direct. I also own a knock-off of Battleship called Sea Battle. You know that you are jealous.)

But there is a lot of speculation that this could be a movie involving their toy properties. My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, G. I. Joe, Transformers, Mr. Potato Head, Baby Alive, Gloworm, Easy-Bake Ovens, Tonka trucks, FurReal Friends and more could all be together in one glorious movie.

Let’s put our heads together and think about what that movie could conceivably be like. Which characters would they be most likely to use? Is Mr. Potato head locked into something with Pixar so he’s unavailable? Does Micheal Bay have a total lock on Transformers?

Who knows? Instead, let’s wildly speculate on what this movie could be about. You don’t have to use every property, but try to use as many as you can as you share your “In world…” style movie tagline below.

And you know what site you are on so, please, shoehorn the ladies of MLP in there somewhere, hmm?

My Little Pony Fair Collector’s Convention 2010 is going to be in Louisville, KY

So Summer Hayes broke the news on her blog that the 2010 My Little Pony Fair will be in Louisville, KY. (Good news for her as she is local!) You can read her post about this here. Now, I’m sure they have covered this somewhere on some forum but I don’t know where and the website is a bit busted right now so this is, quite literally, all the info I have for you.

I have nothing against Kentucky but I for one am really confused. At the 2008 convention, the fair staff said they had a contract to hold the convention in Las Vegas for the next 5 years. Unless I am having a math fail moment, they only held it there once so far.

I didn’t go to the convention in LV last year because I figured I had 4 more years to catch it there. Now, I don’t particularly care about going to Vegas and I think it’s more interesting to have it somewhere different each year than the same place for 5 years straight. My husband is kinda bummed, though, since I told him he could play Blackjack as long as I could buy ponies with all his winnings which was a plan he was oddly psyched about.

So I have to ask you, what do you think? Are you bummed that they changed the location? Were you psyched about a return to Vegas?

My Little Pony as high literature?

If you aren’t a member of Goodreads, you may have missed this hilarious review of Summer Hayes’ The My Little Pony 2007-2008 Collector’s Inventory. Created by Montambo and her friend David, this parody review should give any MLP fan a chuckle.

Summer Hayes is a literary genius.

I was planning on reading this, but first I wanted to buy a copy of The Cambridge Companion to The My Little Pony 2007-2008 Collector’s Inventory, so that I understood the manifold literary-historical allusions and the stream-of-consciousness narration.

Jürgen Habermas wrote an interesting essay on Summer Hayes’ oeuvre a few years back in which he posited My Little Pony as a forcible diminution and reappropriation of the male’s psychosexual privilege in Western culture. He further describes an orange, purple-maned, doe-eyed pony as a ‘folding-over-upon-itself’ of the traditional hegemonic phallocentric aggression we find sublimated in our modes of commerce and social exchange. He also says he likes to comb their hair and kiss them before night-night.

I’d be remiss, however, if I didn’t note that my favorite work in the Summer Hayes canon is The My Little Pony G1 Collector’s Inventory: An Unofficial Full Color Illustrated Collector’s Price Guide to the First Generation of MLP Including All US Ponies, Playsets and Accessories Released Before 1997, in which she collaborates with the highly underrated Kimberly Shriner, who succeeds in tempering some of Hayes’ most gratuitously high-modern tendencies. Also, this is the first Hayes/Shriner work to address the problematic relationship between accessories/playsets and the notion of subjective pony-selfness which has so confounded post-structuralist thought (see Foucault, for instance); what’s most interesting is that Hayes and Shriner define the All-That-Which-Is-Other-Than-My-Little-Pony as ‘accessory’ and not integral to a symbiotic exchange between subjective ideation and so-called ‘objective’ context. Many little post-equine philosophers have rightly challenged this compartmentalized view, but the Pony/Accessories paradigm offers a rather nice model for isolating a subjective notion of subjectivity itself, as demarcated, for instance, from the My Little Pony Rainbow Corral playset.

Let us not for a minute neglect that fateful modification ‘my little’ in which, firstly, ownership and, then, diminishment are asserted — which purposefully counterpoises egotism (the appropriation of Other) with an implied lacking or insufficiency (little being less than that which is regarded as the normative manifestation of a fixed
– or central — ideation); My Little Pony is therefore defined by its belongingness to or of me (or as an accessory to a grounded a priori self, which is both apart from and the cipher which enters into the strategy of poniness on my behalf) and by its devaluation according to an acknowledged standard inherited by the self from the obscure collaboration of accessory identity (or ‘Otherness’). Thus, the tension which is essential to the MLP claim to existence (or, non-ontologically, to ‘mere’ expression) always already threatens to overcome and undermine the very motivations of that claim, thereby alluding to the futility of possession and the frustrated drive aspiring to transcendent satiation.

Massive bonus points if you can comment in the same style and refute/support the arguments presented!

My Little Pony Halloween Costumes

While the 1980s had those plastic mask costumes (which I weirdly cannot find a picture of anywhere, what’s the deal with that internet?), Hasbro has yet to come out with an official My Little Pony costume for the generation of ponies currently in stores.

However, that would never stop pony fans of all ages from dressing up as an MLP for Halloween! Some intrepid and crafty people have created costumes themselves and are selling them only. I’ve complied a small gallery below of some I liked.

While the ones on eBay are trying to be more like official My Little Pony figures, if you don’t mind modifying what you buy a bit, there are a wide variety of Unicorn costumes for children and adults alike. Just sew a symbol or cutie mark on and suddenly you have your very own My Little Pony costume.

I have to admit, this is really driving me batty. Recently the media has discovered that the My Little Pony community has been making custom pony creations.

I am all for the media discovering this. Heck, it only took them 25 years to notice that we were doing stuff like this so I guess I should just be happy for the exposure.

But must they overlay their own words over something there was already a perfect good name for.

They aren’t My Little Pony mash-ups.

They aren’t modded My Little Ponies.

They aren’t My Little Pony mods either.

They are customs. Custom My Little Ponies. Is this so hard, people?

Is this driving anyone else as nuts as it is driving me?

Hasbro decided to take My Little Pony in something of a different direction this year with bigger heads and smaller bodies. While this new style makes My Little Pony look more like the Littlest Pet Shop line of toys, they don’t have much in common with the ponies of last year.

Toys R Us just announced via Twitter that they are starting to stock these new MLP items so I wanted to take a look at the first ones to hit stores and find out what you think of them.

Let’s take a look at four of these new ponies in this new pose and style:

As a fan of the vintage MLP, I prefer that when the new ponies look as much like the old ponies as possible so I cannot get 100% behind this new look. That said, I have to admit that some of the pigtail ponies are a little bit cute.

So while I don’t love this change, I could get behind it, I suppose assuming they still make ponies in the traditional style.

One thing I can’t get behind?

OK so some of this is a little adult but I figured my fellow pony fans would appreciate this. From the Mommy With a Penis blog. Younger fans, don’t read it, OK?

Lately my daughter is gaga obsessed with My Little Pony. For you neophytes, there isn’t just one little pony like the singular title offers. There are many. And they are all girl ponies, not a steed in the stable. Actually, there are no stables. Come to think of it, they are very non horselike, these ponies. They are the color of fruit sherbet and are always prepping for some gala at Celebration Castle. Maxie has only three of their books and in each of them a major festivity is taking place. One book is about a golden egg hunt, another is about a royal costume party, and the last is the ultimate tea party.

I bring up the ponies because along with their lives of party throwing leisure, they have outlandish names. I can barely turn a page of the book without Maxie pointing to each pony and labeling them. Crazy insidious names like Sunny Daze, Twinkle Twirl, Pinky Pie (which sound like the newest designer drugs) are all part of this equine fantasy. And each pony has a tattoo on her haunch. Sparkleworks has a mini fireworks display, Meadowbrook a dragonfly, Wisteria a sprig of wisteria, etc. My favorite pony has four leaf clovers on her haunch…why Serendipity, of course.

Last night, while I was reading Pony Party, for the second time, I had this sudden image. A grouchy group of elderly people sitting around a table, smoking menthols, hopped up on pain killers, thinking up all these crazy ass pony names.

OLD FART #1: I like Minty.

OLD FART #2: Minty? What the hell kind of name is Minty?

OLD FART #1: My Ben Gay is minty. And I like Ben Gay.

OLD FART #2: Fine. I’ll let you have Minty, as idiotic as that sounds, if you let me call a pony Dazzle Surprise.

OLD FART #1: Sound like a big sissy to me, but okay. Let’s shake on it.

OLD FART #2: Can’t reach across the table. Just put your dentures back in and call it a deal.

And I bet I’m not far off on how the My Little Pony names are created. And it’s probably similar with the name generators dudes. Might not be the same group of people. Instead of old farts, the name generators might be just out of college pimply, but it’s the same concept. Name by committee.

2009 Comic Con Exclusive My Little Pony: Good/Evil Two Face Convention MLP

Ever since the first promotional photos came out, MLP fans has been drooling over the Comic Convention (that’s the San Diego Comic Convention, SDCC) exclusive My Little Pony figure for 2009. Like Two-Face of Batman fame, this pony was good on one side:

One audience member asked [Todd] McFarlane if he could draw a “My Little Pony” sketch for his wife, as several other Image creators – including Kirkman – have already contributed. “I might be able to do it, but you must realize that Todd’s ‘My Little Pony’ is slightly different than everybody else’s,” he joked. “Dark form with the big thorns coming in, then you take that big stretchy tail and strangle people… ‘My Little Pony,’ this!” [SOURCE]

Meanwhile, over in Villainville, Dr. Doom and the Lethal Legion are plotting to take over the world. To give you an idea of what kinds of villainy we’re dealing with, they did a special cast reading at the convention. It’s plot: Dr. Doom’s quest to acquire an exclusive My Little Pony collectible. The series kicks off with a four-episode marathon on Cartoon Network September 19, and I’m strangely very excited about it. [SOURCE] and [SOURCE]

Acronyms sellers use for a collectible item that is for sale in original package on eBay and elsewhere

There are several different acronyms used online (especially on sites like eBay) to denote that a collectible item, such as a My Little Pony, is still in their original package. The most popular are:

NRFB – Never Removed From Box
MIB – Mint in Box
MOC – Mint on Card
NWT – New with Tags (mostly used for clothing or dolls that did not come in packaging)
NIP – New in Package (this term is newer than the rest and is only recently coming into popularity)

There are also a wide variety of mash-ups of the terms above where the user tries to jam two of the acronyms above together so you get things like NRFC (Never Removed From Card), MIC (Mint in Card) or NWOT (New WithOut Tags). You will also sometimes see things like NMIB which means that the item is Near or Not Mint in Box.

As a buyer, you don’t want to actually put these terms into your search because there is a such a wide variety of ways people use these but it is helpful to know what they stand form when you encounter them. As always, make sure that you read the seller’s description fully before buying as their title may not agree with their description.

As a seller, when deciding which one to use in your description, go for the most commonly used term for your sort of item.

Dress-Up Pose: What does the heart & clothing hanger symbol on a My Little Pony’s foot mean?

Have you come across a pony with this symbol on the bottom of one of her legs?

That special symbol designates that the pony that bears it is in the Dress-Up pose. Introduced in 2008, this symbol indicates a pony that can fit into special molded clothing and accessory pieces. The presence of this symbol means that this pony can freely trade these molded clothing pieces with any other similarly marked pony.

Most of the ponies released in 2008 were in a Dress-Up pose.
