August Bloom is a boutique event floral design studio located in Chicago. There are three owners of August Bloom, Malaika Martin, Querida Quinn and Ruckiya Ross also known as The Ladies of August Bloom.

How did August Bloom start?

The Ladies of August Bloom have known each other for years, meeting in high school (we won't say how long ago that was...). We started the business in 2009 after taking a floral design course at the Chicago School of Flower Design. We enjoyed the course so much and realized it would be a great business. We already had clients before we "graduated" from our course.

What makes August Bloom unique?

We are unique because we offer non-traditional, artistic floral arrangements that are mainly inspired by Fashion, Art, and Beauty. We call it Floral F.A.B. Our specialty is event floral design. We love coming up with concepts for weddings, galas, and other special events. We also create floral art collections. So far we have done collections inspired by iconic musicians, ballgowns, art, and even nail lacquer and denim trends.

Hardest lessons learned as a business owner?

Understanding our worth. You always want to give patrons a good price so they will work with you, but there is a fine line in being reasonably priced and underpriced. It is important to understand the value of your time, skill, and the quality of your product. That value should be reflected in what you charge customers. They may not always agree but it is your responsibility to help the customer understand the worth of the product you're offering and stand your ground when they try to negotiate to a lower cost.

Advice for future entrepreneurs and would be business owners?

Start with a plan. Writing a business plan is a tedious task, but it is so vital to the success of your business. It helps you focus on what your goals are as a business and helps your map out how you will achieve those goals.

What do you most enjoy about owning your own business?

Setting our own schedules. (laughing) Even though our clients actually determine our schedules, not really ourselves. We also get a sense of pride, knowing we started something that people really like, and ask for.

How do you balance your work and social time?

That's always a hard one and ongoing process. But sometimes we just have to tell ourselves we deserve time to just relax and not think about work. I think we have been pretty good about balancing our work and social time.

Our design studio is currently located in the Zhou B Art Center. Since art has a heavy influence on our work it seemed appropriate for us to be located in a place that is very art focused. Our neighbors are very creative and talented artists and that energy inspires our work. To order flowers for an event we have an initial complimentary consultation with our clients to determine their floral "vision". From there we present a proposal, which the client reviews, and upon acceptance, we ask for a deposit to reserve us for their event. We always keep in contact with our clients throughout the creative process until the flowers have been designed and delivered.

Where did the idea come from? How did your business start?

I have learned that social media and networking is without a doubt, the most important FREE asset that you can put into your business. Secondly, I have learned that you must create a “circle” or a network that sits close to you through good times and bad. These can be family members, friends, colleagues and clients. It’s important to support each other on our journey’s to fulfilling our dreams. Lastly, I have learned that it is ok to “share” the market with other creative designers. One person can’t do it “all” and when you share and feed upon other’s creativity, it helps your own creativity flourish. Finally, the last but not least is to ensure that you have a sound accountant, excellent attorney and a fabulous graphic designer on your side when starting up a business. They are all essential!

I try to accommodate my clients one at a time. If I feel they are stressing or un-balanced because they are trying to design their own business forms or make their own signs or posters for the shop, I offer them a reasonably priced design and print package that will ease their stress and make their business look great in print! Many small business owners try to design their own pieces, websites, cards, etc. and some do it well, others may need some assistance. That is where we step in and work out a plan and execute! Everyone needs to look to their left or right to find professionals in other fields that can help their business and help them achieve “balance” in their work.

	Our Q&A with Michele Harris...

	What is Harris Business Services?

Harris Business Services is an entrepreneurially focused marketing and business development consulting firm that is dedicated to helping women and minority entrepreneurs…to start....to succeed....to grow....and to prosper.

We specialize in assisting women and minority entrepreneurs with start-up, expansion and development processes by creating and implementing results-oriented marketing and business development programs that are creative, innovative and affordable. We work closely with our clients to define and achieve marketing and business development goals by providing customized solutions and the adequate tools to be successful in business.

Harris Business Services provides an invaluable service to our clients. As consultants, we concentrate on our client's needs. Our services include: Business and Marketing Plan Development and Analysis, Personalized Business Counseling, Company Start-up and Development Strategies, Advertising and Sales Promotional Strategies and Small Business Group Seminars and Workshops.

What inspired you to focus your business on women and minority entrepreneurs?

Harris Business Services’ mission is to actively promote the growth, development, and competitiveness of economically disadvantaged businesses. These disadvantaged businesses are predominantly women and minority-owned. Harris Business Services is committed to assisting women and minority entrepreneurs with all aspects of business development and expansion, thereby stimulating the economy, increasing employment opportunities, and expanding the economic tax base.

What challenges have you faced as a business owner within the marketing and consulting firm industry?

The biggest challenge that I faced is stressing to small business owners the importance of having a business plan. There are so many business owners who go about their day-to-day operations by going with the flow or thinking whatever happens…happens. Some of them have what I affectionately call a “Flavor of the Month” business.

These are businesses that started off successful because at the time when the company was launched, everyone thought that they were the exciting new kid on the block. Customers were hungry and had to have a taste of the new business. As with everyone, appetites tend to change over time. As customers no longer savor the flavor of the new business, their appetites turn to the next “Flavor of the Month”. Business owners who do not have a business plan in place will find themselves lost in the midst of chaos not knowing where to turn.

The business plan is the roadmap to success. It tells where you are, where you are going and how you are going to get there. It offers contingency plans for what a business owner can do if and when their business is no longer “The Flavor of the Month”.

Harris Business Services provides comprehensive business plans and strategies that help small business owners to avoid having a “Flavor of the Month” businesses. The key is recognizing the importance of having a business plan. Harris Business Services is up to the challenge and will consistently educate small business owners on the importance of having a solid, comprehensive business plan.

What is ENSPIRE eNewsletter, and what made you create it as a supplement to your service?

ENSPIRE, the eNewsletter for Successful Entrepreneurs, is published monthly by Harris Business Services. ENSPIRE covers today’s most relevant entrepreneurial issues and is an effective guide to the diverse challenges of business ownership. ENSPIRE equips entrepreneurs with critical information required to help them to start, to grow and to maintain a successful business.

Every issue of ENSPIRE is inspirational and informative, covering topics that inspire entrepreneurs. ENSPIRE provides entrepreneurs with a place to learn how to face business challenges head-on and overcome potential obstacles. ENSPIRE provides the resources needed to conquer the daily challenges of entrepreneurship and the tools needed to succeed.

ENSPIRE was added as a supplemental service to Harris Business Services in order to reach a broader market of entrepreneurs who were not necessarily clients of Harris Business Services. While working with my Harris Business Service clients, I found a common concern that resonated among them. They wished that there were more resources available to help them to avoid some of the mistakes they experienced while starting their business.

I heard comments such as “If I only had someone to talk to when I started out who could answer my questions. Someone who could tell me where to go for help. What resources were available”. Taking their concerns under consideration, I decided to create a newsletter which would contain articles that were both inspirational and informative. My goal was to write articles about various entrepreneurially focused topics that would serve as a resource for entrepreneurs. The content would appeal to both aspiring entrepreneurs as well as those who had been in business for years.

The focal point of ENSPIRE is the featured business article. We feature one business owner in each issue. I wanted to give one entrepreneur an opportunity to shine in their own spotlight. What better way to educate and inspire other entrepreneurs than to hear the entrepreneurial journey of someone else who has walked in their shoes.

Featured business owners are carefully selected. We look for entrepreneurs who truly have a story to tell about the trials, triumphs and lessons learned on their journey. They are our cheerleaders, out coaches, our motivators, our mentors that tell other entrepreneurs that you are not alone in your journey to become a successful entrepreneur and to know that there are other entrepreneurs who truly understand your struggle.

How can your service help people find their Lifestyle Zen?

Some small business owners have a tendency to try to do everything themselves without seeking expert advice for areas that they may lack knowledge in. They take on projects that may be beyond their expertise which can lead to loss of time and can create errors that may negatively affect their business financially. This in turn may lead to stress which can affect their personal and business lives. In addition, considerable time may be wasted in doing so. Time is a precious commodity that once it’s gone, you can never get it back.

That’s where Harris Business Services comes in. Our consulting firm helps small business owners define and achieve their goals through improved utilization of resources. We identify problems and recommend solutions. As consultants we not only propose change but also help implement it. By relinquishing these tasks to Harris Business Services, the small business owner will have more time to effectively manage their business. They will not only reap the benefits of a healthy, successful business, but they will also have more time for personal activities thus creating the perfect work-life balance, helping them to find their “Lifestyle Zen”.

	Our Q&A with Love/Hate owners...

Please tell us about Love/Hate cards. What makes your line unique?

Love/Hate is the creation of a graphic designer, writer, and web designer. Caliph Rasul (graphic designer/“Snack Addict”), Cisily Elcan (writer/“Java Junkie”) and Michael Hyman (web designer/”Bacon Aficionado”). We decided to fuse our talents by creating a line of greeting cards.

We have created greeting cards that not only speak, but show what is in our hearts and in the hearts of anyone that has experienced the myriad of emotions that stem from joy, love, heartache and everything in-between.

Our greeting cards are more than images and words, every card is the result of blending two beautiful works of art. The messages expressed in each card created by Love/Hate are reflections of emotions we have all felt or will feel at some point in our life.

What challenges have you faced as a business owner within the greeting cards industry and graphic design industries?

We haven’t had any challenges in the greeting card industry. We have been very fortunate so far. But in the graphic design industry we have come across some challenges. It is a real “Good Ol’ Boy” environment. But, it has forced us to make our own footprints in the sands of design so to speak. The “Rascal By Design (Branding+Identity)” company was born out of those challenges. So, that is a great thing.

What inspires each greeting card theme?

The emotion of love and hate, nature, life, and great writing.

What are some lessons learned during your entrepreneurial journey? What experiences have made you and your business become successful?

That tough skin, patience, goals, and learning to take criticism (positive or negative). Is the only way that success will come to you on this journey.

Love/Hate’s ability to connect with a wide range of people has allowed us to be successful so far. We have seen first hand how our cards have invoked a myriad of emotions.

We have also held focus groups with other designers and writers, in order to refine our designs and inserts to insure the best product possible.

We will have our very first in-store display, in early 2011, in the Chicagoland area. So, we are really happy about our successes thus far.

Our Q&A with owner Jessica Pipkins...

	What is Pipkins Communications?

We are a full service communications company specializing in public relations, event design, image architecture, creative writing and engagement marketing.

What inspired you to start your business?

No matter how far I strayed from PR somehow I was led back to it. Projects started falling in my lap and I enjoyed every bit of it. This made me realize that public relations was my passion and my calling. I recognized the great opportunities in this field and took a leap of faith, leading me to develop a full service communications company.

What challenges have you faced thus far?

The main challenge that I have faced is recognizing that it takes time to really receive a true return on investment. You have to put forth great effort to receive a greater return. You have to exercise patience and continue to work diligently. Another challenge is that some business owners don't understand the true need and importance of public relations. No matter how great a business is, if no one knows about it, other efforts are fruitless. Often, I really have to take time to explain to business owners the value in public relations and how it can enhance their business.

What are the most valuable lessons you’ve learned as a business owner?

The most valuable lesson that I have learned is to know my worth. At the end of the day some people will try to tear you down, which can diminish your spirit. They will try to reduce your fee and discredit your work. I know my worth and do not let negative forces deter me. I also know that everyone is not meant to be a client. Just like clients choose who they hire, we, as business owners, should selectively take on clients. If a relationship is not reciprocal where both the client and company are growing, it is worthless.

Do you offer any signature services?

I design campaigns tailored to each of my clients, making every service completely unique.

How can your service help people find their Lifestyle Zen?

I can help business owners by shaping and informing the world about their brands. When people are familiar with a brand, attracting clients and customers becomes a lot easier. My services make business owners more efficient, because, now, the world actually sees them. Being more efficient allows them the opportunity to achieve a greater work-life balance.

Our Q&A with Owner Bryant Thompson...

	What is Red Level Entertainment?

Red Level Entertainment is an entertainment and marketing company that uses entertainment news outlets and event email blasts as vehicles to help companies gain exposure.

At what age did you decide to create your business? What compelled you to do so?

I was 21, when I created Red Level Entertainment. Red Level Entertainment was created after attending an event in 2000 at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Some friends of mine and I were visiting and had a chance to witness the behind the scenes of planning and promoting events. From there, we came back and started marketing and promoting events in Chicago.

How can your service help people find their Lifestyle Zen?

My company takes away the pressure of trying to market your company yourself. Red Level Entertainment can handle that process, which is a necessity, for you.

What challenges have you faced as a business owner within the entertainment and marketing industry?

I have found that most businesses do not plan to market their products or service or lack the budgets to do so. Also, when the economy takes a turn downward, marketing budgets are the first to go. I offer specials from time to time, that allow those with more limited budgets an opportunity to take advantage of my services.

What have you learned from your challenges and experiences that have made you and your business become successful?

I've learned to always save for a rainy day.
Our Q&A with Owner Candice Dora....

What is Adorable Designs by Candice about?

Adorable Designs by Candice (AD) is a small design studio that creates custom party invitations & stationary with you, the customer, in mind. Our specialties include, but are not limited to, invitations and event stationary, fun party favors, unique gift pails, custom candy bars, personalized bottled water, custom tees and so much more. AD is truly where your fantabulous event begins.

What led you to start your business?

AD was created because I, Candice, absolutely love pretty & crafty things however I totally consider myself to be a “Coupon Diva”. I firmly believe that you shouldn’t have to spend a million to make anything look like a million. Times are a little rough, and like me, people still have a taste for great parties and events. AD was created and molded to provide custom products and outstanding services for a reasonable price so that people can still enjoy themselves during our economic situation and beyond.

How can your service help people find their Lifestyle Zen?

AD services can help you find your Lifestyle Zen by providing a reasonably priced service that can enhance both your personal and professional lives. Personally, sometimes you want have a nice gathering with friends that is lavish but easy on the pockets. Professionally, you could be a small business owner looking for a unique and inexpensive way to brand your company and your product. With us you can be the “Hostess with the Mostest” or a local business whose branding speaks for itself. We constantly offer package specials for our clients.

What are the most valuable lessons you've learned as a business owner?

The power of networking: Although friends and family are sometimes your BIGGEST supporters, there are other people within your reach, yet outside of your immediate circle, who could benefit from your services. Networking and meeting new people can open so many new doors and resources you may not have thought of. A smile and small conversation can create unlimited possibilities.

Competition is healthy for good business: When a new kid shows up on the block don’t get intimidated and don't get distracted. Instead, keep an eye out for what’s going on within your industry- new trends, specials, and even prices. Remember, there is enough "pie" for everyone. If you want the biggest piece of it, you have to strive to always be on top of things and know what’s going on around you.

Know your worth: You are in the business to make money: Because I love making beautiful things, sometimes, it was hard to put a price on them. However, I love my family, sleep, and myself just as much. So, I slowly but surely, realized that running a business is different from a hobby. If you want to offer discounts or specials periodically that’s great, but remember your time and talents are valuable.

What is the greatest challenge that you have faced?

The downturn of the economy, of course. Although AD offers great services and products at low prices, we are in a major competition with Mr. ComEd, Mrs. Nicor, Uncle AT&T, etc. We strive hard to provide weekly specials and “Pink Lyte” deals that can’t be passed up. AD knows when times get better, our customers will remember our commitment to customer service and talent. They will choose AD to make their parties standout and FANTABULOUS.

So, what is Identity Engineers about?

Identity Engineers is an Identity Analysis Firm. Basically we use assessment tools to help individuals, entrepreneurs, and organizations leverage their strengths into viable business solutions. I know that sounds a bit fancy pants, so let me give some examples. For example, if an individual wants to start a business or change careers, we would use personality assessment and other tools to help them start a business or choose a career based on their personality and situational strengths.

Or, if a client wants a logo, website, or advertisement, we use assessment tools (color and value analyses) to help them create a logo, website or advertisement that accurately conveys the values and message they want to send to their customers. The common link is using assessment tools to analyze the client's individual or organizational identity to help them develop solutions based on their strengths and values.

What led you to start your business?

In essence, I was my first customer. I had a lot of different talents (song writing, music production, graphic design, web design) and interests (personality typing, assessment development, and Industrial Organizational Psychology in which I have a Masters). I knew there didn't exist a job that would allow me to do all of those things, so I created one.

Then, I took the same process I used to create my business and developed it into a product that would help other individuals do the same thing. I started off as Doo Yu (Developing Original Occupations Based on Your Uniqueness) in 2007, but switched to the Identity Engineers brand in 2009 because the acronym did not convey what I wanted it too.

How can your service help people find their Lifestyle Zen?

You would be surprised how many educated people have no idea what they are passionate about, or how many companies create websites, logos, and advertisements that have nothing to do with what their company really stands for. Balance cannot be achieved without insight into what drives you. I feel that the insight we provide helps people achieve their Lifestyle Zen by educating them on their strengths, starting a conversation about their values and helping them incorporate both into an executable business.

What are the most valuable lessons you've learned as a business owner?

	1. Starting your own business is HARD!!!!! It takes a lot of self discipline, focus, and determination. You don't have anyone breathing down your back, so there's no external motivation. It is all intrinsic!

	2. Being able to accept rejection without losing your confidence is a MUST. Its a jungle out there!!!!

	3. That a business can be started regardless of how much money you have!!!! There are all types of tools that give everyday joes the ability to start their own businesses with limited start-up and operating costs. All you need is an internet connection, a phone, and some business cards. EVERYONE has talents, its just about using those talents to create a situation in which you can get paid for them.

What is the greatest challenge that you have faced?

Business-wise, it was recognizing and accepting that I could actually make money outside of my 9 to 5. At first I doubted myself, but when those checks started rolling in, suddenly, I recognized just how much power I have over my life and income. Once you accept your true potential, it is just a matter of holding yourself accountable, maximizing your potential and taking control of it all.

This time, last year, I discovered one of my absolute favorite events in Chicago- For the Love of Chocolate. This gala is an annual fundraiser to provide scholarships to students seeking training at the French Pastry School of Chicago, one of our city's true culinary art gems.

February 25, 2012 - this Saturday - is the night that you don't want to miss.

What I loved about For the Love of Chocolate, was that it encompassed everything that you would not expect from a typical, black-tie event. I wrote about all of the fine details here....

This year, The Food Channel will produce a four-part series on this one-of-a-kind extravaganza. For the Love of Chocolate will feature:

	cocoa cuisine

In Cocoa Cuisine, experience sweet and savory bites from Chicago’s best chefs. As you walk through what feels like miles of tempting displays and aromas prepared by over 50 top chefs from around the country, be sure to pace yourself so you can try a bit of everything.

	cocoa venetian carnival

Transport yourself to a raucous night in Venice during Carnival, where elegance and mischief meet. Join the fun by donning a mask, playing with Redmoon Theatre, and admiring Carnival-inspired chocolate designs as they come down the runway.

	sweet as sin

Prepare to pick your poison as you cross the chocolaty River Styx into the sweetest Hades you’ll ever see. The gatekeepers will have you choose your favorite chocolate sin so you can have the chance to indulge in sweet and savory morsels, dance, and lose yourself in a full chocolate bar. If this is bad, you won’t want to be good.

	cocoa candyland

Get your evening’s sugar fix in this colorful passage, spanning the entire length of The Merchandise Mart. You’ll encounter Princess Lollipop, a traveling band, and live demonstrations of sugar showpieces as you satisfy your sweet tooth.

	confectionary

PolyScience and SubZero/Wolf present the Confectiatory, where mad scientists will manipulate chocolate and sugar to do things you never thought possible. Taste how new technology like the Reverse Griddle can change familiar confections into space age concoctions.

	chocolate spa

Everyone knows high heels and stuffy shirts can make for a long night. Recharge in the chocolate spa where you can receive chocolate massages, touch-ups on hair and make-up, and even a pair of flip-flops to relieve your aching feet. Once you’re refreshed, you’ll be ready to party through the night!

	cocoa sutra

In a big event like this, you may need a moment to take it all in. Take a break from the dancing in the Cocoa Lounge, the best place in the Gala to relax, listen to some calming tunes, catch a belly dancing performance, and get ready to return to the festivities.

This is the best way imaginable to spend $200 (yes, it's tax-deductible) for a night on the town, giving back to a great cause, enjoying chocolate-inspired cuisine, delectables and cocktails and having a night, that you will not forget.

Hello friends, one aspect of work-life balance that is too important to overlook is volunteerism. Giving back is less about adding another thing to your plate, and more about finding a profit-free outlet for your gift. Now if you are a struggling entrepreneur, you might be cursing the computer screen at the words PROFIT-FREE. No, it wasn't a typo. Yes, I meant exactly what I said.

It's easy to get lost in the world of making money, and sometimes we need a break. Particularly, if your business was derived from your passion, then you need an opportunity to work your passion, just because.

	Sans the pressure of clients.

Sans the pressure of money (yes, money can add pressure).

But you need the opportunity to do it, just for the love.

Find a group that aligns with your values and interests, and an opportunity that allows you to hone your skills. Think beyond skills that you regularly execute in your business. What about some others that are collecting dust, perhaps?

This leads me to the other point of this post - Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 23, 2012.

"Why" you ask? Because I want you to come spend time with me and the ladies of the Future Leaders Council of the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago at our annual fundraiser, Rock Away Racism. Now, before you go all numb, and start yawning at the word "fundraiser" let me explain.

Rock Away Racism celebrates Chicago's diversity through music at the Hard Rock Hotel on February 23rd. This one of a kind concert features the melodic lyrics of Jess Godwin, the hip hop stylings of Endiskize, and acoustically brilliant Jamiah "On Fire" & The Red Machine. Event proceeds benefit YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, the largest women's organization in Chicagoland. YWCA Metropolitan Chicago is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Rock Away Racism is not your typical fundraiser.

Before I was a member of the Future Leaders Council, I attended this event. It's a phenomenal time, and a great way to give back. Save your receipts because your ticket purchase is 100% tax deductible.

A Quick Review of RACE at The Goodman Theater

My apologies, friends. I intended to write this review three weeks ago, but life took over. I had the great pleasure of seeing Chuck Smith's production of David Mamet's Race at the Goodman Theater. There was so much buzz about Race, that I wasn't sure if it could live up to expectations. I am happy to share, that for me, it did. For those of you who don't know, Race is the story of Charles (Patrick Clear), a middle-aged a white male accused of the rape of an African-American woman.

Charles seeks legal counsel from two attorneys, Henry (Geoffrey Owens) and Jack (Mark Grapey). Henry is African-American, and Jack is white. Their new associate, Susan (Tamberla Perry) is an African-American woman. Henry, is not particularly fond of taking on the representation of a white male accused of raping an African-American woman; while Jack sees the case as an opportunity. Susan is in a lane of her own, and turns out to be everything but the initially meek, unassuming, naive attorney she initially portrays.

The play opens at a quick-witted pace with intellectual banter that continues from start to end. Charles is a privileged white male who, according to Henry, "hasn't been told 'no' in forty years." Throughout the play, Henry and Jack's primary focus is to prepare a proper defense for their client. That storyline takes the backseat to the racial issues that surface during their preparation. Race pushed the envelope from a couple of different perspectives, and in a good way. Race magnified realities, that most will deny - even the most well-intentioned person can have pre-conceived notions about others, based on race. Even today.

Race delivered the right combination of humor and suspense, while keeping us on our toes with the endless subliminal and in-your-face commentary. Race runs until February 19. Check it out while you can.

Embracing Change for a Balanced Life

So you want a balanced life? Well, you need to Embrace Change in every area and move beyond past hurt and pain. This week, my third book on empowerment for women, “Behold You 2- Embrace Change,” focusing on being empowered after painful circumstances in life, “officially” launches.

This book was written because so many women deal with painful situations and suffer in silence. Women need to know that once they adjust their thoughts about changing their situations, and take action to bring about positive change in their lives, their lives can become better and balanced. I also wanted to ensure the timely release for Black History Month chronicling my history of courage and empowerment for my children, grandchildren and women across the globe.

While writing the book, I thought about all of the things that I have experienced and what it took for me to move beyond pain and grasp my purpose. One thing I learned over time is that all women are Fabulous, Awesome, Wonderful, and Amazing! I call this the F.A.W.A principle and it represents:

Fabulous because of our inner/outer beauty
Awesome because God is awesome and we acquired the heir heritage
Wonderful because of our testimonies of strength and overcoming
Amazing because of our faith and our heart to help others

Once we understand our purpose and why we have the strength and stamina of soldiers to fight when it seems like there is no breath remaining, we can have a better and balanced life. F.A.W.A!

15 Work-Life Balance Tips For Geniuses Who Launch a Biz While Working

Hey crazy genius. How's your day?

Did you spend your entire weekend cramming in work for your baby business? (Not a baby business per se, but a new business. I know how things can get misconstrued over these internet waves.)

Instead of enjoying a night out with your favorite peeps, you toiled away at your laptop.

As if that's not enough, then the next day you got up and went to that job.

And, it pissed you off every time someone actually asked you to work.

You don't mean any harm. You have bills to pay and hell, this is how you are getting that done.

But, you are READY. Ready to take that leap of faith.

Leaps of faith are admirable, but...you've still got bills.

So you build while you work.

These tips are for you.

	one.

You cannot conquer it all in a day. Baby steps are key.

	two.

Don't rush through developing your baby biz. Pay attention to the details. The fine details will lead clients to you.

	three.

Treat your baby biz as a job with set hours. 10 hours per week is a good starting point. Establishing hours will help keep you more focused, and force you to pay attention to how you spend your time.

	four.

Embrace where you are in life. Remember that your job, is on some level, making it possible for you to build your baby biz.

	five.

Assign certain types of tasks to specific days. For example, Mondays work on new client outreach. Tuesdays work on administrative tasks such as organizing your contacts. Wednesdays work on service or product development. Thursdays work on promotional strategies and marketing initiatives. Fridays work on blog and/or website updates. By the end of the week, you will have made progress in each of the key areas of your business.

	six.

Entrepreneurs need multiple streams of revenue. While you are working that job, take time to flesh out your primary service into multiple revenue streams.

	seven.

Now that you've given yourself set hours each week, take a day off. You need it!

	eight.

Make a list of where you waste time. Does one fan page update turn into 45 minutes of browsing Facebook? Then use a service like Hootsuite that doesn't require you to log in.

	nine.

Instead of focusing on the something new that you can add to your business, spend a few minutes each day improving what you already have. Potential clients will notice...I promise!

	ten.

At the beginning of each week (I do this on Sundays) review what you achieved for your baby biz during the previous week. Make your to-do list for the upcoming week. Don't forget to plan your to-do's according to what we discussed in #5.

	eleven.

Do you have specific goals for your baby biz? Goals are concrete such as "Improve reader retention on my blog." If you are not intimately familiar with your goals, then your are probably wasting a ton of time.

	twelve.

Each and every to-do should align with a goal. If it doesn't then why are you doing it??

	thirteen.

	Sleep.

	fourteen.

Focus on where you've come from instead of where you are at now. Don't discredit all of the hard work you've done so far just because you are not where you would like to be.

	fifteen.

If you have clients, think of ways to improve their experience. Clients should not have to suffer because you are working a job and your baby biz. For instance, if you cannot check emails everyday, manage their expectation. Set up a friendly auto-responder that says that they will receive a response within 48 hours. This automates a process for you, lets the client know that you care and gives you a bit of time to breathe instead of leaping at every email alert.

Do you have tips to add to the list? Do share!

I had been planning to visit Cafe Babareeba in Lincoln Park for a while due to the rave reviews on Yelp. After my first visit, it quickly became one of my top spots. Yes, I've been back since then...several times.

Stellar service + passion fruit sangria + a generous tapas selection = a good time for moi.

Here is a rundown of my fave small plates from Cafe Babareeba, in no particular order:

	1. riola braised short ribs and mashed potatoes

	2. roasted chicken empanada

	3. chicken and ham croquetas

	4. pork ribs, dry rubbed and sherry glazed

	5. paella with shrimp, sea scallops, mussels, green beans and cherry tomatoes (according to my parents)

	6. warm potato and onion omelette

The only dish that failed to woo me was the garlic potato salad. I just expected more...garlic. That was forgiveable considering my overall experience was an A+. If you go to Cafe Babareeba on the weekend, make reservations. It gets pretty busy.

On February 28th Cafe Babareeba is offering a Spain v. France wine pairing for only $25. Guests will sample 25 wines and signature dishes by Chef Tim Cottini (Cafe Babareeba) and Chef Ben Goodnick (Mon Ami Gabi).

We live in a fantastic world don’t we?

We can conjure up an idea.

	Sit at our computers.

	Research.

	Plot.

Scheme.

	And, bam.

We can have a new business venture, practically overnight.

(Yea, yea...I know it’s not quite that simple).

My point, however, is that between the world.wide.web, social media, and other technology, it’s pretty damn easy to set up a business and go. We have a gateway to potential customers and clients, that hasn’t always been at our fingertips. Because of this, we see new businesses pop up, literally every minute. Throw up a Facebook page and BAM you have a business. Oh, and if you went the extra step and hired a graphic designer to do a logo, then you are on your way.

If you have recently started a business, one of the first questions you need to seriously ask yourself is, “Is this a business or a hobby?”

The reality is that, while there are some true business owners a.k.a entrepreneurs, there are others who are merely Keeping Up With the Joneses. They want a “business” because everyone else has one.

	This post is for Entrepreneurs.

If you are still reading, then that means you are indeed an entrepreneur. You've probably introduced yourself to the world and now it's time to...

Make sure your business is legal.

Some of the things you have to do, are merely to stay in the good graces of the government. But, others are for your benefit as well. Either way, I cannot say it loudly enough...

This is not the time to go against the grain.

Penalties and fines are not pretty.

Let go of your inner renegade, for now at least.

If you are in Chicago, where I am, lucky you. I am going to point you to the exact place to get the job done. If you are St. Elsewhere (my fellow Cee-lo/Gnarls Barkley fans will get it), then you may need to research a bit on your own.

Here's a quick soundtrack as you pull out your paper, pen or iPads to take notes:

Okay, are you ready now? Here goes...

	one.

Register your business name with local or state authorities (this is not the same as a trademark, which we will cover at a later time). Assuming that you already have a business name, now you need the right to actually use that name to do business.

This step applies to sole proprietors, general partnerships, or professional service corporations, whose business name is different than their own. For example, my birth name is Patrice. My business name is Lifestyle Zen. If I were a sole proprietor, I would need to register Lifestyle Zen with the County where I am doing business. If I skip this step, guess what? I don’t really have a business called Lifestyle Zen. Nor can I have checks written out to Lifestyle Zen.

	Your listening now, aren’t you?

In Cook County, this process is called an Assumed Business Name. Start that process here.

	two.

Review the business license requirements for your city and determine what is needed for your business. In Chicago, some businesses are not required to have a business license. Take a look at the list here. Most home-based businesses even require a license, and details on that are available here.

	three.

Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) with the IRS. The EIN is necessary if you have an employee. I also recommend it for biz owners who do not have employees. No, I am not making you do extra work just because I feel like it.

As a business owner, you may need to provide your Social Security Number in a number of circumstances, mainly involving paying out and receiving money for your hard work. If you have an EIN, you can use that instead and guess what- now everybody doesn’t have access to your SSN. Now, you’ve reduced your risk of identity theft. You can get your EIN in an insta-second here.

	four.

Do you have employees on board? (secretly envying all the show-offs). Make sure you register with the appropriate state department and the IRS. If you are in Illinois, then report your new staff with the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

	and here...

	five.

Last but not least, you must also register with your state for business taxes. Click here to register in Illinois.

If you’ve taken all of these steps, congrats you are on the right track. Virtual high fives for all.

If you think it's time for a free consultation with me, attorney for creative entrepreneurs, then by all means...let's do it. Email me here.

Note: Reading this blog does not constitute an attorney-client relationship, peeps. I simply believe that <strike>sharing is caring</strike>. Did I really say that?

My point, however, is that between the world.wide.web, social media, and other technology, it’s pretty damn easy to set up a business and go. We have a gateway to potential customers and clients, that hasn’t always been at our fingertips. Because of this, we see new businesses pop up, literally every minute. Throw up a Facebook page and BAM you have a business. Oh, and if you went the extra step and hired a graphic designer to do a logo, then you are on your way.

Resolutions are Tired. Stop Trending + Develop Goals That Matter to You. Not the Rest of the World.

	Let’s chat.

I initially wanted to have this convo with you over Christmas Carols and Caramel Apple Cider (with extra caramel and whip), in front of a fireplace adorned with sparkly garlands and stockings. I even envisioned a pine scented candle glowing in the background, with Mariah Carey Christmas playing on Pandora.

Initially our conversation was going to go something like this...

Me: (with candy-caned striped socks stretched out across the sofa): *Sips...* Don’t you just love this time of year? It’s so relaxing. I can’t wait to start planning for 2012.

You: I know. I already started working on my New Year Resolutions. What are yours?

Scene: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” starts to blast through the speakers. We rock back and forth, singing in perfect harmony...

	I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is...
YOU!!!!

It’s the perfect made-for-tv moment. You know?

You: Now what were you saying, about those New Years Resolutions?

Me: Oh yea, I think Resolutions are for losers.

	Record Scratches. Music Stops.

Now this is when you start to re evaluate our friendship. You get all offended and pissy because you think I just called you a loser. After all, you have been working on those resolutions for the past six months. You finally have them perfectly crafted and here I am...

Being a scrooge. Messin’ with your holiday cheer.

So to avoid the awkward moment. The risked friendship and whatnot. I decided to let you have your time.

	But now...

You sang. You rocked. You partied. You ate all you could eat.

	Now...

	Your back at work.

Your coworkers have pissed you off.

	The dust has settled.

And your probably not feeling as We Are The World-Ish.

And this my friend, is when I can leap in with a moment of bitter truth.

	Resolutions are for Losers.

I’m not saying I’ve never done it. I’ve been on that glittery band wagon straight to nowhere.

	Prime example...

For years I would say...I Resolve to (is that even correct...) Join a Gym. Armed with my new gym membership and workout gear...I was right there at L.A. Fitness with the rest of ya’ll. Until February 1st... Same thing, different year.

Then I realized. Going to the gym doesn’t work for me. I don’t like being in close quarters with a bunch of sweaty people. I don’t like using machines that have been drenched in Stranger Sweat. Hell, I don’t even like getting in my car to go do something that I’m not all that crazy about doing.

But, I will take a nice walk or jog along the lake.

I will attend a yoga class or two.

I will work out at home with my own shit and Exercise TV.

	Those things work for me.

So, when I say Resolutions are For Losers it’s because usually they are based on what excites the status quo. What was in the shiniest magazine ad...

	This year, do something different.

Develop realistic goals. This year I decided that I am going to workout more than I did last year, and find a routine that can fit in my current lifestyle. Yea, I know...it doesn’t sound as cute and snappy...but its attainable for me.

Instead of saying I am going to expand my business. I developed a list of actual projects and target dates.

Instead of saying I want to be a better daughter, sister and friend. I developed a list of actual things I can do to make myself more available.

Now that we are back in the real world. Let’s chat about real goals - leave a comment below.

The Nativity + Congo Square Theatre. Catch it While You Can.

Last week, I finally saw Congo Square Theatre's production of The Nativity at Goodman Theatre. I say finally, because the production has run during the entire month of December...the busiest month of the year for yours truly. The production is not to be missed. I laughed and cried during this emotion-filled adaptation of Langston Hughes' Black Nativity. I don't like to give too much, so I will share my top three fave parts of the musical, beyond the music and modern dance of course.

	1. King Herod and The Three Kings during "You Ought to Try the Lord"

	2. "I Have Faith" performed by Athaliah and Johasheba

	3. "Mary What's the Matter" by Johasheba and the women

I am returning with my mom and my sis, to check The Nativity a second time. Yep, it's just that good. I highly recommend that you drop whatever it was that you had planned and purchase last minute tickets for the show.

	There are six performances remaining.

	Ticket information available here...

Here I go again telling all of my <strike>dirty</strike> little secrets.

I have loved Lolita since 2007....Lolita Glasses that is. These uniquely crafted martini and wine glasses make great gifts for any occasion. I have the lawyer glass (it's so cute...would pass out if anything happened to her). No matter the occupation, hometown or personality...there is a glass to match. As a bonus, a recipe is written on the bottom of each one and each glass comes in a keepsake box.

Here are a few of my faves for the holidays...

The description for this one is hilarious: There are streetlights, ladies, and dollar bills....could this be the Lolita Martini Glass from the "wrong side of the tracks!"

You probably don't want to give this one for a fresh divorcee...use a little judgement.

We hear everyone talk about a paperless office, but what about a paperless LIFE? I for one, have so much random paper laying around the house and am determined to conquer it once and for all. I came across this Doxie Go scanner and believe this will be the solution to my problem.

A couple of things that I love about Doxie Go...

-It's ultra portable for transporting from home to office and back.

-It operates on a rechargeable lithium battery...so you don't have to plug in.

-It has a built in memory that holds up to 600 scanned pages.

	-It creates searchable PDFs AND

-It can sync with your PC/Mac, IPad and IPhone as well as send documents to cloud services such as Dropbox, Evernote and Google Docs.

Doxie Go seems to be a great option for busy, on the move peeps.

The Jackie Wilson Story + Kick A#@ Season at Black Ensemble Theater

Black Ensemble Theater kicked off the first season in their new home, with a bang. If you didn't already hear...

The Jackie Wilson Story is a must-see.

I really don't like to give too much...and steal the surprise juice, so I will give just an itty bit.

In true Black Ensemble Theater fashion, the music (vocals + instrumentals included) were fab. Renditions of Jackie's top hits such as "To Be Loved" and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher" kept the crowd rocking. Everyone who I spoke with (or eaves dropped on) was amazed at how well Kelvin Roston Jr. portrayed Jackie in demeanor, style and song.

A couple of folks broke out You Tube videos during intermission to compare the two...

	I'm just saying...it was a spot-on portrayal.

My two favorite scenes were No Pity (In the Naked City) and A Mother's Love. Eliza Mae (Jackie's mother) was played by Dawn Bless - a powerhouse. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when Dawn finished her heartfelt ode to motherhood.

The Jackie Wilson Story runs until January 8, 2012.

That means you have no excuse to miss it. Purchase your tickets here...

	On another note...

Black Ensemble Theater has a fantastic line-up for the 2011-2012 Season:

"The Prophet" Marvin Gaye Tribute - February 12 - April 1
"Luther" saluting Luther Vandross - May 6 - June 24
"One Name Only" (A Tribute to the Ladies of Soul) - July 29 - September 16
"Ladies and Gentleman - James Brown" - October 14 - December 31

It wouldn't be right to leave you without a tune. Listen, croon, dance...and tell us about your favorite productions at Black Ensemble Theater in the comments.

Is there a Chicago non-profit that you support? Let's spread the news on those "doing good" in our city and support them this Holiday season (and beyond).

I first learned about the Chicago Human Rhythm Project and it's Thanks4Giving Program last year, this time. Global Rhythms was a great opportunity for this performing arts fanatic (moi) to witness artistic expressions of a variety of cultures. The performances were exhilerating, but more importantly, my ticket purchase supported a great cause.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project builds community through American tap and contemporary percussive arts in world class, innovative performance, education and outreach programs. Thanks4Giving is a groundbreaking program that provides a vehicle to support Chicago-based non-profits.

For every ticket purchased, 50% of the proceeds is donated to a partner non-profit and you receive a 10% ticket discount.

A complete list of participating non-profits and discount codes is available here...

CHRP’s Thanks4Giving program has delivered more than $150,000 to nearly 180 organizations—a few dollars at a time. Organizations have raised between $50 and $14,000 in a single year.

This year's Global Rhythms/Thanks4Giving performances include Step Afrika! , Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater, The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago and The Mayfair Performing Company.

Looking for a great way to spend this Thanksgiving weekend? Then, check out one of the shows. The concerts take place Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 at the Harris Theater in Millenium Park.

Support the cause and purchase your ticket here.

If you are interested in learning about how to get your non-profit involved as a partner organization, then here you go!

	mujeras latinas in acción

My first exposure to Mujeras Latinas en Acción was at the organization's annual fundraiser Baile De Las Galaveras held at the Chicago Urban Arts Society (CUAS). This was a well attended affair, with a great group of supporters, of all ages, ready to mingle and have a good time.

Upon arrival, guests had the opportunity to spin the Wheel of Fortune...a fun way to kick off the evening. I won a pass to "cut" in any line of my choice throughout the event. Of course I used my "cut" for the Tarot Reading...one of highlights of the evening.

The evening's proceeds supported Mujeras Latinas en Accion a social service organization whose mission is to empower the Latina community. Initiatives focus on domestic violence, women in transition, leadership development for youth and adults, among other critical programming.

CUAS, an artcentric, non-profit located in Pilsen, provided a great backdrop for this event. The creative space promotes the works of emerging artists and provides an open and flexible space for special events
