While we’re still every bit as captivated by all the Cannes action, we’re giving some attention to Blighty this afternoon, as it was the first day of our X Factor auditions yesterday – and we think that’s something to get exited about! 

Tulisa Contostavlos, last year’s winning mentor, is back – and we’re a little bit in love with her sartorial choice for the big day. She was voted FHM‘s sexiest woman in the world, after all, but it goes beyond sexiness for us.We love how the judge added a studded, chunky waist-defining belt to the floral dress, which instantly gives an otherwise girly look a feisty rock n roll edge. Karl Lagerfeld would be proud… and if you saw our ‘Midweek Moodboard’ yesterday, you’d understand why we are too!

Geri Halliwell (is she a guest judge? Is she sticking around for the whole show? Who actually knows?!) also made a huge effort, but more with her antics rather than her outfit. (We saw pics of her clambering out of a car window and onto the roof… ‘nuff said!) The lady formerly known as Ginger Spice wore a very short, lace mini dress with cut out detailing at the back; while it isn’t the most age-appropriate of dresses, there’s no denying that her figure is still perfect for it. Loving the hair too!

What do you get when you mix ancient mythology with contemporary style? Ancient Greek Sandals, that’s what.

“According to an Ancient Greek myth, the gods and goddesses had their sandals made on the beautiful islandof Crete by a gifted sandal maker who enriched each pair with magical powers. Famous for having made the flying sandals for Hermes, the sandal maker also embellished them with his personal signature…a “golden wing” buckle.”

And, with this mythological summary in mind, Christina Martini and Nikolas Minoglou set about realising their dream of creating beautifully feminine sandals infused with Ancient Greek historical references.

Handmade by skilled, local craftsmen using centuries-old techniques, Ancient Greek Sandals was launched for Cruise 2012, and are currently stocked at some of the best stores around the globe.

My Fashion Life caught up with the design duo behind the name to talk holiday spots, favourite spring trends and, of course, shoes.

Describe your typical working day

Christina: I mostly work in the mornings and I take care of my son in the afternoons.  I sit in my office to design; correct prototypes, choose colours and materials and in general organise things.  Because I live on the island of Corfu and not inAthens, where the sandals are made, I am on the phone a lot with the technicians in the factory explaining and organising everything. I travel a lot; I usually go to Paris, which is a nice break from the daily countryside routine.

Nikolas: I arrive at my office by 09:00 and find time flies as I try coordinating a million things at the same time! It is overwhelming at times but the feeling of satisfaction when I get things done makes up for it. Although I try to leave work by 17:00 in order to make it for my daily gym workout or swim, I usually work from home until late at night.

How many pairs of shoes do you each own?

Christina: Around 300 pairs without the Ancient Greek Sandals. Of course, I don’t wear them all!

Nikolas: I own less than 30 pairs of shoes and they are all sneakers. I usually wear the same pair for a few weeks until it’s run down and then move on to the next. I like my sneakers to look old and used. Sometimes I buy the same style in 2 or 3 pairs.

Tell us a little more about how the idea to set up Ancient Greek Sandals was conceived?

Christina: I always liked the traditional Greek sandals, which you can find in tourists shops on Greek islands. My idea was to create an evolved version with much better quality leather and more intricate design inspired by Ancient Greek Art and Mythology. When I met Nikolas, through a common friend, we realised that we had the same idea and dream. We started thinking about it and finally after almost two years our dream came true.

Nikolas: It was one of those ideas that you just know are going to be a success from the start. We both got to work with strong passion, belief and love for the idea and the rest followed. The fact that our homeland is currently going through such turmoil gives us even more strength to support Greece by giving work to local craftsmen and suppliers.

Who is your favourite shoe designer and why?

Christina: I always admire shoes by Prada.  It is amazing how they always set the trend of each season. Marc Jacobs’ shoes are also one of my favourites.

Nikolas: Miuccia Prada is at the top of my list, especially the last three seasons.

Favourite shoe trend from the SS’12 catwalks?

Christina: The Prada Corvette mules

Nikolas: Prada’s fast and furious wedges.

If you could design the shoe wardrobe of a celebrity for a whole year, who would you pick and why?

Christina: I like Diane Keaton’s style back in the 70′s. I think she would look great wearing AGS all year round, even in the winter with woolly socks!

Nikolas: Cate Blanchett. Her style is unique and her “mysterious” beauty inspires me.

Favourite holiday destination?

Christina: The small Cycladic Islands

Nikolas: Koh Samui, Thailand. I could drink fresh coconut water under a coconut tree on the beach all day. I especially enjoy visiting in the winter months.

Given the opportunity, which classic shoe would you recreate with an Ancient Greek twist?

Christina: The classic 70s boots

Nikolas: The Converse Chuck Taylor.

Remember when Kate Middleton went to meet the Team GB women’s hockey team a few months ago? Of course you do… we all do! We ranted and raved about how the Duchess of Cambridge had reignited our love for all things coral, but another thing we were particularly smitten with was her scarf. If you want to get your hands on it, we’ll let you in on a little secret.

It was in fact the British Olympic Association and the Team GB Olympic scarf. Not only does it look fabulous and show your patriotism for our country… but it also raises money for Team GB.

The scarf is available to buy exclusively in Next stores and online, and is probably the only thing the Duchess has stepped out in that isn’t actually out of stock yet!

We know a scarf is probably the last thing on your mind in this weather, but fear not as there are numerous different ways to wear it. Our personal favourite? Wearing it on your head as an ultra-stylish hairband… looks good and keeps your hair out your face in the heat. What could be better?!

Day 8 of the Cannes Film Festival saw a whole host of different looks on the red carpet, ranging from the extravagant to the somewhat casual to all else in-between. There were even some repeat appearances from Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst… and yes, we approved of all of them! 

The big guns were out for the likes of Milla Jovovich, Kylie Minogue and Bonnie Wright (who really has blossomed into a right beauty, may we add!) as they each looked phenomenal in their respective Prada and Dolce and Gabbana frocks. Kim Kardashian rocked up in one of our favourite dresses from the Balmain autumn/winter 2012 collection to support boyfriend Kanye West at the Cruel Summer premiere. Love the dress. Hate the shoes.

And as much as we’ve enjoyed seeing Kristen Stewart jetting around the world to promote Snow White and the Huntsman, we’re glad she’s finally landed in Cannes! We saw two looks from her yesterday, both courtesy of Balenciaga. Makes sense, she is the face of its new perfume, after all.

K-Stew wore a gorgeous low cut maxi dress for the On the Road premiere, and some Balenciaga printed trousers for the photocall.

Looks like Georgia May Jagger has something else to add to her ever-expanding CV, as she has just been announced as the brand new face of Madonna and daughter Lourdes’ Material Girl clothing line. 

“To be handpicked by Madonna and Lola as the new face of Material Girl is truly amazing,” the 20-year-old Brit model told WWD. “I’ve always admired Madonna’s style and I’m thrilled to be working with them.”

Apparently Georgia’s first duty will be to star in the latest ‘back to school’ themed ad campaign for the Material Girl Juniors line, which totally isn’t the same thing. It’s still unclear whether Georgia has completely replaced Kelly Osbourne as the face of the clothing line or whether the Fashion Police star will come back, so watch this space.

What do you make of the brand new casting? We think choosing Georgia was a fabulous decision – and expertly timed too, as Material Girl is set to come to the UK for the first time ever next month!

Yep, you read that right, Louise Gray for Topshop is the next big designer/high street collaboration to get all excited about! 

Reports are suggesting that we can expect the range – which include clothes and make-up – to land in Topshop stores and online from as early as this August!

“It’s very exciting to work with Topshop on this collaboration,” the Scottish designer said. “I have been working with the Topshp team since they first sponsored my collection through NEWGEN a few years ago, they’ve been so supportive of my work from the start and it was great to create this collection with them!

“My idea behind the collaboration was to design for the Topshop girl a range that was young and fun, similar to both the fashion and make up I wear already. My mainline collections have always been about pushing optimism, colour and fun, I want her to experiment with the product, be daring and have fun with it.”

From the moment we saw Louise Gray showcase her London Fashion Week collection at the Topshop Show Space, we should have known that the two would one day join forces, as they fit so seamlessly together, don’t you think?
