Hello,

I am new to this Forum and would like to say hello to everyone.

I am very much a hobby machinist. My small workshop houses a Chester Conquest lathe and a Sieg X1 mill.

At the moment I am working on a 2" Clayton Steam Wagon.

I have been toying with the idea of setting up CNC on the lathe and mill. I would be grateful for advice and suggestions on whether it is practical on these types of machines.

Many thanks for listening.

Regards,

Hi All

Im looking to build a new stepper driver for my mill project. The original board used an L297 driver and 2x L6203 H bridge output stage. I'm hoping to build something similar and have found a few circuits on the net.

I have also found some nice additions to the basic circuit like overload protection for the output chips (good idea since I fried them on the last board :smile:) and varable voltage for VREF to increase Half step torque.

The circuit i have used i heavilly based on one I got from an old thread on cnczone but I'm unsure what the Pic chip dose (i asume it detects the clock pulse and varies the VREF accordingly)

So Question 1. can anyone help with a replacement circuit for the PIC chip as I dont want to use PIC chips for this project.?

And Question 2. Can some check over my version to make sure it works or suggest an alternative?

Thanks in advance

The 2M880N is suitable for a wide range of stepping motors including our SY57 and SY85 and is ideal for any application that requires a High performance but very low cost microstepping driver.

The 2M880N digital stepper driver is a step forward in stepper driver technology.
The N series offers far superior performance over traditional stepper drivers, and offers very smooth motion, that is until now unseen with stepper drivers; and this is due to the advanced current control and the autotune function.

N series drivers are the latest digital high-resolution stepper motor drivers incorporating DSP single-chip microcomputer as the control core, these products adopt vector current control algorithm and are suitable for driving 2-phase hybrid stepper motors under various brand names. The application of advanced vector control algorithm greatly reduces noise and vibration of the motors during operation, and enables the stepper motors to deliver a noise and stability level comparable to that of servo motors. The brand-new heatsink design enables the drivers to meet the strict safety requirements while keeping a compact structure.

Specification

* 8A current rating
* 24-70V DC supply
* Autotune function for improved smoothness and performance.
* Over-voltage, under-voltage, short circuit, overheat protection.

Ok, so I bought a mini lathe off Ebay ...which came without a chuck. Now I'm clueless about a lot of things in life & I put lathes in that category. A lot of reading ensued the outcome being I though a 4 jaw independent chuck would be my best option - quack, quack oops ...it's such a chore to use, that I'd rather drill my kneecaps than have to go through the arse of lining a bit of material up! (which means it's not getting any use)

Now, since I mainly work with small round bar type stuff...I now realise that a collect chuck would be a far better (quicker!) option.

But I'm overwhelmed at the options...can any of you good folk here, help me choose the 'best bang per buck'.

My mini Axminister (C2 300A) lathe has an MT3 spindle, I envisage working with round bar in the region of 3mm-10mm.

This is just a hobby & I'm not a heavy user, so I don't want to pay a massive premium for top notch quality, but I don't want to be cursing everytime I change a collet either!

Many thanks!

Hi fellows, I'm new here.
I've checked some of your threads, and could probably contribute a bit.

The machine was designed for wood, plastic, soft metalls,
working envelope 200*230*65mm

fancy solution (miiiinnnneee :) ))) of Z-axis - neodymium magnets + Teflon as the slides and polished metal plate. the force required to tear it off - 20kg, to slide it - 2 kg, works pretty fine, no backlash at all ;) .

a bit of history in pictures, + work done so far.

X, Y axis - built using hardened 300mm D=12mm Thompson rods,
linear ball bearings, plastic bushings,
tools used for the build - lathe, milling machine, drilling machine, digital calliper, common sense.
I hope here in the forum to find information on converting a conventional milling machine to CNC.

Hi All
Got back to playing with my cnc mill. Tried to do some engraving but as the engraving proceeds accross the x axis the cutting depth gets greater so I assume the z axis is loosing steps.
How is one supposed to test for this, I think I should try a dial gauge.

Hi all,

I'm a newbe on this community.

I have a 12year+ old Step4 router, not brilliant but ok for balsa, ply without knots. Fitted a cheepo 240v router, will cut any ply, plastics now. The weight and offset of the spindle from the yaxis guides makes it abit wobbley. It's in semi retirement at the moment, shall make new spindle using air grinder innerds driven by a belted Brushless 400w motor and set guides one above the other.

2 weeks ago I got an X1 mill from Arc-Euro with DIYCNC.co.uk lecy bits up and running so now I can make parts for Step4.

Software is:-

DoubleCad XT free! only 2D but a good cheap start.

Cut2d - Wonderfully straight forwards. One weekend I tried 3 different CAM sample programs, the next Thurs I used them again and found Cut2D was the only one I could use without cursing.

Mach 3 - Another good Prog.

CNCly
