Mike Frauenheim, who elevated Immaculata High School boys basketball to prominence and guided the Spartans to two state group titles without a Division I player, resigned from his post Monday after 13 seasons.

The 46-year-old Somerville resident is stepping aside to focus on his job in sales with Riddell, the sports equipment company.

“What he did with that program is just remarkable,” said former Mendham coach Jim Baglin, one of the deans of New Jersey hoops. “He is a terrific coach but an even better person. He’ll really be missed in our profession.”

By Alex Schiffer
Correspondent

St. Joseph High School senior guard Jimbo Long announced Saturday night he’ll continue playing for Division III Gettysburg in the fall.

“I’m a Bullet next season,” Long told Gettysburg head coach George Petrie over the phone.

Long, who exits St. Joseph as one of just three players to win four Middlesex County Tournament titles and was a part of 101 wins at the Metuchen school, finally came to a decision after months of consideration.

The 6-0 floor general had a slew of options, which included walking on at major Division I programs like Villanova or taking a post grad year at The Peddie School. In the end, Peddie, Gettysburg, St. Anselm and Catholic were finalists for Long’s services.

“Gettysburg has been the school that showed the most interest in me,” Long explained. “They recruited me the hardest. I love coaches Nevolo and Petrie. The team was cool and the school has excellent academics and great facilities.”

Long, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter under Dave Turco, was instrumental in guiding the Falcons to their first back-to-back NJSIAA Non-Public A titles and an appearance in this year’s Tournament of Champions final.

While Long never grabbed a ton of spotlight due in part to playing with six 1,000-point scorers and Division I talents such as Quenton DeCosey and Karl Towns, he was a huge part to keeping all of St. Joes’ talent glued together.

“Coming in as a freshman I was a scorer, and coach Turco told me that would be my role as a sophomore,” Long said. “I was scoring the first half of the season until Danny Brix transferred and my role changed to a distributor. From that day I realized I didn’t need to score with all these guys here. I just needed to do all the little things. That’s what I pride myself on. It’s been a blessing playing with all these great players over the years. It has definitely helped my game.”

Turco thinks Gettysburg is a great fit for the Matawan native and thinks the Bullets are getting “a winner with a great work ethic.”

Turco went on to credit Long with the help of the Falcons rise to prominence.

“It’s no coincidence that our program started to thrive with the arrival of Jimbo Long. He matured so much as a player and student during his four years and became the perfect leader for us on and off the court. I am not sure this is any other player in GMC history that helped his team to a 101-17 record with four county titles and two state titles.”

Turco expects Long to help the Bullets right away and thinks that he can be an All-American under Petire.

Long shares the title as the only four time GMCT champion with teammate James Ziemba, who has turned into Long’s best friend over the past four years.

Ziemba, a lefty pitcher bound for Duke, was pleased to hear of Long’s decision.

“He’s been my best friend these past four years,” Ziemba said. “It’s pretty awesome that we’re both going on to play in college. You can bet I’ll be out there to see him play whenever I get the chance.”

Although Turco’s squad has a bright outlook with Division I talents in Wade Baldwin, Marques Townes and Karl Towns returning, Long’s departure leaves a huge void at point guard and in the leadership department.

By Joe Martino
Staff Writer

After riding shotgun with Bo Henning for the last 14 years as a top assistant and junior varsity coach on East Brunswick High School’s boys basketball coaching staff, Mark Motusesky has been finally given the keys the car.

The Board of Education approved Motusesky Thursday night to become the sixth coach in the program’s 54-year history, succeeding Henning, who stepped down early last month after a 25-year run that included 388 wins, a Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title and an NJSIAA Central Group IV crown this past winter.

“I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity for a while,” Motusesky said. “I was so blessed to coach with Bo for all those years, and he molded me into the coach I am today. From a standpoint of practice planning and game preparation, he gave me a great appreciation of what it takes to be successful.”

“He’s the perfect choice,” said Henning. “Any of the success that we’ve had in the last 14 years is directly attributed to what (Motusesky did preparing the kids for varsity.”

A 1988 graduate of East Brunswick High, Motusesky wore Bears’ No. 33 for two GMC Red Division titles, the 1986 Central Group IV crown and the 1987 GMC Tournament title.,” said East Brunswick

“Mark understands what it takes to run a successful boys basketball program,” East Brunswick Supervisor of Athletics/Physical Education Frank Noppenberger said in a news release. “He has respect of his players and a comprehensive basketball IQ that will continue the excellent reputation of our program.”

“We’re going to keep on plugging along, working hard and preparing the kids,” said Motusesky. “There’s obviously going to be differences because Bo and I are different people, but defense has always been our trademark and we’ll still rely on that hard-working mentality.”

While completing his master’s degree at The College of New Jersey in 1997, Motusesky tossed his hat into the coaching ring by mentoring youths at the Immaculate Conception School in Spotswood. His final requisite for graduation was a semester of student teaching, and ironically it was spent alongside longtime and now the longest-tenured coach in the GMC, North Brunswick mentor Eddie Breheney.

Motusesky served as an assistant under Breheney during the 1997 season, the year North Brunswick captured its lone GMC Tournament title. He coached East Brunswick’s eighth grade girls teams the following two seasons before joining Henning’s staff in 1999.

“He was a big help and a huge part of that run to the title in ‘97,” Breheney said, “and it was clear he caught the coaching bug early and was always one of his goals to be a head coach. I think it’s a smart move by East Brunswick because he shares the same ideals with Bo.”

The new skipper said he feels the coaching transition will be smooth for himself and his players, and he plans to meet with the team either today or Monday to get his tenure underway.

“Our program is in a good spot right now,” Henning added. “We’re going to be a little inexperienced next year, but it’s an awfully good time to take over the program and it couldn’t be put into the hands of anybody better than Mark.”

Princeton-bound point guard Amir Bell and the GMC’s leading 3-point shooter, Garry Baumer, lead the returning class of a team fresh of its best season. The Bears’ 26 wins were a school record.

“We have a lot of guys coming back and some junior varsity players coming up, and we’re losing a few fantastic players,” said Motusesky, “but Amir could be the best player in the entire conference this season. Baumer is returning as the best 3-point shooter in the league and Carl Taylor, who played well coming off the bench for us last season, is back so there’s no reason why our expectations should be any different than any other year.”

Volunteer assistant coach Rich Whalen will step into the vacated junior varsity post.

Motusesky has taught Physical Education in the district for 17 years, including the last six at the high school. He’s currently in his sixth season guiding the Bears varsity girls golf team.

“He’s been tremendously loyal to me, and always has been a very loyal friend to (Breheney),” said Henning. “What will separate him is that he’ll take things from each of our programs and put his own personal stamp on them. It was great we didn’t always agree on things because you want a guy to speak his mind, and Mark is going to put his own signature on things.

“He’s got an unbelievably good feel for his personnel for what they can and can’t do on offensive especially,” Henning added, “and he would adapt his personnel to the situation as opposed to making the kids adapt to how he coached. He always found great matchups we could take advantage of, and I don’t know if that’s something you can learn from anyone.”

IN THE PAINT SAYS: Baldwin is no dummy, literally. He's in fact an incredibly bright kid and said to me the other day that he'll value academics highly in his decision, and wants to graduate with a degree from an esteemed institution. And with a slew of his native Virginian schools in the bag -- which is another component that'll weigh heavily in his choice -- he knows the pressure is on for schools like Cincy, Ga. Tech and Stanford to make an offer, which I believe to be schools he's targeting. But that's just pure guessing on my part.

Although not a Division I caliber player, Baldwin's St. Joe's backcourt mate Jimbo Long is an interesting follow since he played the roll of facilitator and consummate teammate to the most talented top three players on any team in the Garden State this season. According to Schiffer, Long, who has aspirations of coaching, was considering a post-grad stint as a player-coach at Peddie but ultimately nixed that. Long appeared headed for Division III Gettysburg to join Westfield native and Rutgers Prep grad Joe Kacmarsky, but a late flyer to some D-II notables , including NE-10 schools, advised Long to wait a while longer because the unnamed schools "may need a point guard."

IN THE PAINT SAYS: It's late in the game, but it's nice to see Jimbo possibly garnering interest from the D-II ranks. While undersized, his fundamentals are superb and his basketball IQ is extremely high. Given the chance, he knocks down the open jumper 8 out of 10 times and hardly turns the ball over. Not to mention he possesses the leadership skills any program would covet. How many three-year letter winners and the winningest player in St. Joe's history would be willing to adapt to the pomp and circumstance surrounded by the arrival and early-season drama surrounding Baldwin and Marques Townes arrival.

North Brunswick High School senior guard Iverson Fleming thought he was heading to an island; Long Island that is. He made a non-binding commitment to Hofstra University early during this past season.

Fleming signs his National Letter of Intent in the North Brunswick High School gymnasium last Friday. PHOTO COURTESY OF IVERSON FLEMING

But when Pride coach Mo Cassera was relieved of his duties this offseason, Fleming said that he “had mixed emotions.”

LIU, which had been courting Fleming well before Hofstra came into the picture, became an appealing spot for Fleming to land himself. He signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Blackbirds last Friday.

Fleming feels LIU, which has made the NCAA Tournament the last two years, is the perfect landing spot to continue his playing career.

“They play at an up-tempo style, and I like to play at that kind of pace,” Fleming said. “I didn't feel like I needed to go too far away to play for a good basketball program. They have a excellent academic program that I can complete my degree.”

Fleming, a 2012-’13 Home News Tribune All-Area First-Team selection, led the Greater Middlesex Conference in scoring this past winter. He averaged 22.4 points per game with 60 trifectas while leading the Raiders to a 20-7 record and an appearance in the Central Group IV quarterfinals. He also passed the 1,000 career point plateau.

Fleming said he wanted to play for a winning program.

“That is very important and it played a big part in it due to the fact that I'm a very competitive player,” he said. “I feel LIU is the perfect fit for me, and even more importantly is that their graduation rate is on the up and up.”

Fleming is best suited as an off guard with the ability to create a shot for himself in isolation against any defense thrown at him, but he has good enough handle to run the point and can create shots teammates.

After guiding high school boys basketball programs for 29 years, it looks like Willie Leonardi is hanging up his whistle for good.

The 72-year-old resigned this week after one season at Delaware Valley’s helm due to the onset of a rare form of rheumatoid arthritis that causes a great deal of pain in his shoulder, hips and neck.

Leonardi, who previous head coaching stints included Scotch Plains-Fanwood, South Plainfield, Hunterdon Central and Voorhees, did a fine job this winter with the Terriers, inheriting a 9-15 team and leading it to a 17-8 campaign.

“It hurts to retire,” said Leonardi, who is managing the pain with prescription steroids. “I expected to stay here at least three, four more years, but his came along very unexpectedly. Three or four weeks ago I couldn’t tie my shoelaces; I couldn’t go up and down the steps. It hurts leaving those kids. I’ve got some good kids coming back.”

Madden, who transferred to McCarrick this past season, was an All-Greater Middlesex Conference White Division selection. He averaged 13.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game this past Winter for the Eagles who posted a 7-19 record overall and were 2-10 in division play.

“We’re pretty excited to have him,” said Frank Phillips head coach Chris Hackett. “He’s got a ton of potential. He needs to gain some size and strength, but his length gives him the chance to come in and play right away.”

The Plainsmen posted a 14-16 record overall and a 4-12 division record this past season.

Madden will play in the Middlesex County All-Star Game on April 23 at Woodbridge High School.
