With their production brewery in full swing and the canning line up and running, our pal Damien Malfara will be shipping his T-Rail Pale Ale & Endless Summer cans into the Philly market. This is exciting news for everyone at OFBC and in Philly. Here are the details from Damien…

We are celebrating our launch in the Philly market starting Feb. 1st...which is next week (unbelievable how time flies)!

I'll be down in Philly the whole week promoting the beer and the schedule is listed below.

If any of you want to come out to any of the bars/restaurants/beer stores to hang out and sample some fresh Old Forge beer, please take a look at the schedule below.

We are entering the market with our two flagship brands, the hoppy T-Rail Pale Ale and the easy drinking Endless Summer Ale, both in kegs and 16 oz. cans. But for our launch party, we brought down special beers that are not available anywhere else except our pub in Danville. We even filled a firkin of our Bellows Brown Ale aged in a bourbon barrel for Standard Tap! And if you are into barrel-aged beers, we also brought our Quad and Hank the Belgian Stout, both aged in bourbon barrels for 7 weeks!

So I hope to see some of you sometime next week to catch up, have a beer, and celebrate Old Forge coming to Philly!

Just thought you’d want a peek at Damien Malfara & the guys sampling T-Rail Pale Ale, the first beer to come out of the new Old Forge Brewing production brewery. I’ve also included a photo of the Wild Goose Engineering canning line, still awaiting setup. If you look carefully you can see the cans just waiting in the background. Just wanted to let you know that we will be celebrating our 3rd Anniversary this coming Monday, December 5th. We are opening for special hours from 4pm-10pm (we're typically closed on Mondays). We're also tapping one barrel of our limited-release Bourbon Barrel Quad to commemorate the occasion. We'll be serving complimentary birthday cake and playing some games with some prize giveaways, as well.

As it happens, our birthday coincides with the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition so there are two reasons to celebrate!

Just a few highlights from the Old Forge Brewing Co Fall 2011 Newsletter:

Single Malt Fuggle was the customer-appreciation week favorite from Damien’s single malt series (Saaz, Liberty, & Fuggles). Upcoming beers include Hop Mama Amber, Smashin’ Pumpkin, Hank the Belgian Stout (in honor of Damien & Maria’s newborn Hank), & a Bourbon Barrel Aged Belgian Quad (to be released for their 3rd anniversary).

The production brewery is progressing…floors are ready and all the new equipment is on-site awaiting installation. Justin James (new head brewer) & Jason Vansickle (cellarman) have both joined the OFBC team as well….so it’s exciting to see things moving forward. Cheers & Congratulations!

Old Forge Brewing–Single Malt Fuggles & Baconfest!

Just heard from Damien @ Old Forge Brewing :

This week we tapped up the last of our single malt/single hop series, Single Malt Fuggles. In a few weeks we will have all three of the them (Saaz, Liberty, Fuggles) on tap simultaneously so people can try them side by side. All the beers used Vienna as the lone malt, and were brewed exactly the same with the only difference being the hop variety. It has been immensely popular in the pub and we may do something similar in the future.

Next week we are having a Baconfest at the pub. Tons of bacon - our menu will be baconized for one week. We'll be having pork trivia, chocolate covered bacon, and we're tapping up some of the Old Forge Rauchbier, with its sweet and smoky character it will perfectly complement all the bacon.

Back in Oct 2010 we welcomed Damien Malfara from Old Forge Brewing in Danville, PA on to the Friday BeerBuzz to sample his Smashin’ Pumpkin Ale. The beer was great, and Damien was a great guest…so it was only natural that we’d want to get Damien back on for another visit and to sample some more great brews.

I have to thank Damien in advance since he’s up to his ears in the opening of an Old Forge Brewing Co Packaging Brewery. We brought you the news back in March, but it was a lot more fun to hear Damien describe the new facility.

Look for a new 20bbl brewing system to be in place (located at the former TRW plant on Market St in Danville) but I think I was most excited to hear a few things. First off watch for 16oz cans of Old Forge Brewing Co Beers to be released into our market. Initially I’m expecting to see Endless Summer and T-Rail Pale Ale (the beers we sampled today), but I suspect we’ll see even more beers in cans from OFBC as time allows. I think what was most exciting to hear for me was the news that Damien would be using the original brewpub system to experiment and perhaps even brew some specialty 750ml bottles and even come barrel aged beers. Very exciting news for Damien and for our local craft beer community….so stay tuned for some upcoming OFBC beers coming soon.

Old Forge Brewing Company in Danville, PA is now accepting applications for a brewer position. We currently operate a small brewpub (380 bbls last year) with an emphasis on quality and craftsmanship. Our 20 bbl x 40 bbl packaging facility is scheduled to open this summer.
This position includes but is not limited to:
-All aspects of operating our 20 bbl production brewhouse and 5 bbl brewpub brewhouse
-Maintaining current established recipes and creating new recipes when needed
-Filtering, Cleaning, Cellaring, Packaging, Quality Control
Ideal Applicants should have:
-Minimum of three (3) years professional brewing experience, preferably in a production brewery environment
-Packaging line experience (preferably canning)
-Experience with brewery expansions
-Knowledge and understanding of brewing science and yeast handling
-Ability to remain flexible with work schedule and work various shifts as needed
-Desire for a challenging hands-on position covering all facets of brewery operations with opportunities for growth and advancement
-Ability to multitask, work solo, and function effectively on a team
-Good communication and organization skills
-High degree of self-motivation
-Problem solving, troubleshooting, and mechanical skills/knowledge
-Ability to lift up to 60 lbs and move at least 165 lbs
-Ability to be around alcohol without abusing it

Old Forge Brewing–New 20bbl Packaging Brewery (Update!)

From Damien:

Assuming all goes well with the TTB and PLCB, we will be opening up our packaging brewery at the old TRW plant at 601 E. Market Street in Danville this summer. We have a used JVNW brewhouse, originally built for 15 bbls but modified by the most recent owners to knock out about 23 bbls. So we're using it as a 20 bbl system. We're getting new 40 bbl fermenters from Premier Stainless. We have been getting some other pieces of used equipment lately to complete the brewery and we'll continue to look around for other items as needed. We'll be doing kegs (sixtels and halves) and canning on a Cask 5 head ACS, with plans for 2 labels initially in 16 oz cans. We'll add labels as we grow. We also will package special/seasonal beers in 750 ml bottles and will begin experimenting with some barrel aged beers, using bourbon barrels and wine barrels.

We will continue to operate the brewpub as normal. I'm hiring a full-time brewer and full-time cellarperson for the brewery, but I will continue to brew at the brewpub for as long as possible, with the other brewer filling in there as needed.

I'm sure you may have some questions...If you do, feel free to ask either via email or call me and I'll answer what I can. In the meantime, I'll try to keep you posted on how our project progresses.

We’ve been fortunate enough to have some great guests join us in the studio for the Friday BeerBuzz. I was really excited to welcome this week’s guest, a) so I finally had the chance to meet this busy brewmaster, and more importantly b) so I finally had a chance to taste his fall seasonal beer. Today we welcomed Damien Malfara from Old Forge Brewing Company in Danville, PA and we sampled Damien’s fall seasonal Smashin’ Pumpkin Ale. Old Forge Brewing Company (OFBC) is relatively new, opening their doors on Dec 5th 2008, and I’m happy to report they have already expanded their capacity to keep up with demand. I also really love the theme of OFBC. Damien and wife Maria highlight craftsmanship in many ways at OFBC. From the locally grown produce to the hand crafted mug rack, mug club mugs, restaurant booths and of course their hand-crafted beers. All in all a unique brewpub and wonderful tribute to craftsmanship.

It was really fun tasting such a great Pumpkin Ale, with the young man that hand crafted this beer and based on the fact that this beer is made with real pumpkins, I think I have some idea where the Smashin’ Pumpkin Ale moniker came from. This is a very tasty beer so be sure to take the ride to Mill St in Danville to check out all of Damien’s brews.

I’m honored to report that Damien and Maria Malfara from Old Forge Brewing Company are the proud parents of a new baby boy who arrived on his due date of 4/18 promptly at 8:18PM. Mother and baby are doing well, and in honor of his birth Damien will be releasing his new Trinity Tripel on Sunday 4/25. Damien also tells me they’ll be trying to get the Pilsner on by Friday and a new wheat on by the end of next week. The expansion project at the brewery continues as well with the new tanks scheduled for a July delivery….so stay tuned.

Congratulations to Damien & Maria and welcome to a future beer lover ;) Cheers!

Just wanted to pass on a quick congratulations to Damien for winning the Peoples Choice award at Taming of the Brew for Old Forge Alt and to pass on some other details from the OFBC March/April newsletter.

OFBC will now be open on Sundays and Damien is also working on a new beer called Trinity Tripel…as well as a new baby boy who Damien and Maria are expecting very soon.

The big news is all about expansion. OFBC will be not only expanding their dining area upstairs, but more importantly to beer lovers OFBC is getting more space next door to expand into a new 10 bbl brewing system with two new 10 bbl serving tanks. This is great news for local beer lovers and an early congratulations to Damien and Maria on their upcoming addition.

Congratulations to Damien & Maria for their upcoming one-year anniversary at OFBC. To celebrate the event, their planning a special event (see photo). Damien was nice enough to pass on the details—be sure to note the DOUBLE IPA!:

We are celebrating our anniversary on December 5th with live music all day and a special menu and we are tapping up a Double IPA Anniversary beer.

In January on the 16th - we are having a Beat the Winter Blues Fest - from 11 am - 12am with live blues acts throughout the day and night! See our website for more details as we get closer.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made our Pumpkin Fest a great success over Halloween weekend. The Smashing Pumpkin Ale was a big hit and our pumpkin menu was so popular that we will be bringing some items back for the holidays!

Old Forge Brewing Co – Pumpkin Fest & One Year Anniversary

This week we are having a pumpkin festival from Thursday to Saturday. Smashing Pumpkin Ale is being tapped up on Thursday. I used roasted pumpkin (cooked 3 hours in the oven with brown sugar), Saigon cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and nutmeg, all in the boil with the pumpkin. Then I added some vanilla in the conditioning tank. It came out great!
OG 1.054, 5.4% ABV

We are having a special pumpkin filled menu (see above) Thursday thru Saturday and on Saturday we are having a pumpkin carving contest 12 - 4 all ages!

We are also having a One Year Anniversary party on Saturday, 12/5. Live music all day from noon until 11 pm, various local musicians throughout the day. Special menu that day plus we will unveil a special anniversary beer as well. I'll send more info as we get closer plus our website should be up to date with info as well.
