Genuine Techs-Wreck---shattered picture frame

I was finally done with my digital picture and went to make one final adjustment and the thing just slipped out of my hands. Shattered the glass into pieces and the frames just snapped into four different pieces. The glued very lighted, looked elmers glue and not wood, and the the four corners were stapled together. Where are they now? Well i guess you can say, "THE GARBAGE" :)

No wonder the Ribbas i bought were on clearance.

Anyways as mad as I am, I cant help but think what would've happened if I would have hung the frame and then it would have fell. Too many woulds for to handle. Well tell me about it. Anyhow, when finished it, it looked like this:

DIY Laptop Digital picture Frame----Muz's Version--Day 1 & 2

A very generous person donated these laptops to me for a very good cause. The good cause was and is to build a Digital Picture Frame henceforth will be referred to as DPF. Many will say why not just buy one, it only cost $50. Well yes i could but where's the pride in saying I bought one. Couple of my co-workers bought one and it just sits there and no one notices it until some amazing picture pops up on the display and they say, "ooh what a picture", "where was this?" But this time they will stop and say what a frame, where can i buy one?

The Following laptops were donated:

4x IBM Laptops 390x
1x IBM think pad A31
1x Some crappy old dell---don't know if it still works. Still sitting at work.

As a gift of his generosity I will build him one as well. The following work-log is for my future references and yes, I am not the first one to do this. This applies to only those thinking, wow this has been done before and its lame. every one has there own point of view and does things differently.

so here we go! :)

Day 1-April 9
Received the generous donation of the laptops and brought some of the laptops home. It was a pain to carry them home. I had to stuff all three of them in my bag and they weighed a ton. The one's I'll be using for the digital picture frame are the Think pads 390x. I chose the 390x for a couple of reasons. They are Pentium 3's, don't generate much heat, Small form factor due to the fact that its large size is caused by the humongous battery and the CD-ROM/Floppy combo(really no joke), screen size 14", and the power switch can be modified to use a button. Its running TinyXp Rev 9. Check out the pictures to see what i mean.

Finally after playing around with them and checking to see what can be done with them, i came to the conclusion that I can strip them apart and build a digital wireless bluetooth enabled picture frame which i can use for a couple of things. My brainstorming session came up with the following:

1. Slide Shows of my baby niece who turns one year old, May 31st.
2. Wall mounted gaming console consisting of NES, SNES, and SEGA emulators.
3. Just amaze the hell out of my co-workers.
4. My mother always wanted one.
5. Just for fun.

Now that we got that out of the way moving onto the parts needed. I spent almost 2 hours measuring the laptop, searching for parts, and layout and design. I needed a frame that wasn't to big but was the right size and about two inches deep to mount the internals of the laptop. So i immediately turned to Ikea to see what they had and came up with the frame called "RIBBA." The website showed the size i wanted was for $30. Thinking I'll buy one now and the next week buy another one.

Day 2--April 10-shopping for parts- Brick and Mortar
First Stop: Ikea in Redhook.

Went straight to the ding and dent depot in Ikea. That's where they keep all the floor samples and customer returns for a dirt cheap price. Only catch is that all sales are final. To my surprise i found three Ribba's for $5 a piece. They were Ikea's floor sample in like new conditions. Also bought Felt pads known as PRAKTISK.

Next stop: Lowe's--Redhook
Bought L brackets and wood boring bits. Only need 1/2 inch but didn't have single ones so i bought the 5 pack for $5 on clearance. Yes I'm the bargain master. :)

Next and final Stop: HomeDepot--also located in Redhook. I saved so much gas just by these stores being so close.

All stuff bought came out to under $35. I feel proud. Day 3 will be measuring and cutting and also explaining the uses of all the tools and parts bought. Till then see ya'

The (MSI) Wind is Here!

So recently I acquired a second hand MSI Wind for $150-while the MSRP of a new one is $349 at time of purchase- and thought how can i make this little budget netbook better than it already is. Here is a shot of the wind.

Couple of more:

If you note in the picture above the MSI Wind netbook utilizes a ALMOST full qwerty keyboard. Its roughly 93%.

I finally got to use my $20 reward zone Coupon i have been saving for Gears of war 2.
Last night i went out and bought the Limited Edition. This is actually the first time I ever bought a limited edition game and the Limited edition is ten dollars more than the regular one.
The $10 extra was totally worth it because i got a free Centaur Remote Control Car with it and a Gold Plated Lancer with it.

I even modded my original controller to go with my game.

DAY 1

Maybe a year ago I had traded my Blackberry Pearl for a Premium Xbox 360 console which i believe was the media edition i think. It came with the mini media remote and a label saying remote included.

Anyways:

here are some pics to look at: Btw this is my first time physically modding a console.

So i have added the pulse VU 2x, added external switches to the Lian-li temp sensor, added wiring for ethernet Activity and Link. look sat the pics.

I painted the ring of light cover blue also:

ROL center and the surrounding to blue smds

Wireless Ocntroller changed to blue. But Unfortunately Lifted the + pads to had to borrow. Thanks to XboxExpert for posting the images I was able to trace alternate power.

Rewired the A and B buttons on the Lian-Li temp sensor. for external use.

Because of the limited room in the 360 i had to shorten the length of the sensors

Front 12v Mod for future use:

Thanks to sickmods again for makeing leds boards. I have wires up 12 leds which i will hook up to the pulse vu 2x

Now the fun stuff. This is the sickmods Pulse VU 2x. Very easy to install I didi it in 2 minutes.

PSP SICKMODS FADER MOD BY Knight787

This article is a HOW-TO to show you how you can mod your psp to fade the leds using Sickmods latest fader. This Mod was first attempted by Fufa over at acidmods but he used an older version of the fader. He used the deluxe.

All or most of the stuff i bought was at Sickmods

To start off you need the following things: the * is optional but Recommended

2x o603 smd or 2x 3mm LED but you must cut them and sand them - i chose blue but you can get any color
1 47ohm resistor- click here to calculate your resistor
1 Sickmods fader
30 Awg Kynar wire- different colors will help
25 watt soldering iron
.22 rosin core solder
rosin solder flux- makes soldering so much easier
Exacto Knife or a switch blade
*Magnifying glass
*tweezers
*electrical tape- I used liquid electric tape
Drill machine
Hot glue gun
*masking tape
Small phillips screw driver- buy one of those $1 precision sets.

^Time and being patient is the key here^

*I am assuming you already have the knowledge to take apart your psp as i will not cover it.

Pictures say a thousand words. Look at it.

A recommendation is that you twist your wires together like this:

now that you are done with all that bore two holds in the trigger R & and L.

Now wire up your leds and resistor.

Just tape it all up but neatly and put as far right as you can under the wifi board like this:

So back in February I had bought a new toy from Compusa when i heard it was officially going out of business. So sad :(. Anyways I picked up a Gagdet by Novint Technologies, Inc.

The Limited Edition #1067 of 5000 Novint Falcon

It is a force feed Back controller a.k.a Haptics Technology, designed to give the end user full control over the game the choose to play. So far the only games that i have seen compatible with this after applying the mod package from their website are Half-life 2 and Quake 4 Multilayer. Novint Has their own version of half-life 2 called Haptics 2.

They also have games avaible through their game engine called the Nvent. This controller allows you to feel and touch objects as if they were real. Its like bionics. robotic yet a human touch. The FALCON supported by a round base and has 3 mechanical arms.

The minuted i came home. I assemble the unit meaning I installed teh software, Plugged in 2 cables- usb and power- and was ready to go.

Here is a video of my new toy and soon ill be posting a new video of an official review.

Right I'm in the process of modding my Xbox 360 meaning painting my case, lighting it up, adding a window, etc.

What is this?

This How-To explains "how to" set up an old computer as a network media server running Ubuntu Linux.

My Box

I've been using this old computer as a table for my Dr. Pepper for quite some time now. It's a Hewlett-Packard with a P3, 256mb of ram and originally running Windows 98.
Ingredients

-Any old computer you have laying around that meets minimum requirements for Ubuntu. (In my case, Ubuntu Edgy 6.10) -Large hdd. You can pick on of these up fairly cheap at newegg or ebay. (Mine is only 40gb which I pulled from a modified xbox I never use anymore.) -Internet connection -Ubuntu install CD

Setup Process

Now to get down to actually setting everything up. I've read all kinds of tutorial in my life and I know that they can get confusing, so I've written this one to be as simple as possible.

1. Install Ubuntu
You can find a guide on how to do that here. (Edgy specific)

2. Setup SSH
Install-From the terminal type
sudo apt-get install sshNow to SSH into your remote machine from another Linux box type the following in the terminal, assuming the IP is 192.168.0.1. (To find the IP type "ifconfig" in the terminal.)
ssh username@192.168.0.1To SSH into the box from Windows download an application called Putty

5. Update Ubuntu
This step is pretty easy but may take some time. To update from the terminal type.
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

4. Disable gdm (Optional)
To disable gdm, from Gnome click System/Administration/Services and unclick Graphical Logic Manager (gdm)

5. Reboot

6. Leave it
Now that we have Ubuntu set up and running with SSH, set it up somewhere where it will be out of the way, unplug the monitor, keyboard and mouse and just leave it and get to your client computer.

7. SSH into your media server

8. Setup Samba
Samba allows your linux machine to connect to a linux workgroup. (The following steps are all done from the SSH terminal)

Install
sudo apt-get install samba smbfs
Configuring Samba
Stop Samba
sudo /etc/init.d/samba stopBackup/Move
sudo mv /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.origCreate
sudo touch /etc/samba/smb.confEdit
sudo pico /etc/samba/smb.confCopy/Paste this file into Pico Replace "YOUR_HOSTNAME" with anything you want, preferably the name of your Linux box Replace "YOUR_WORKGROUP" with the name of your Windows workgroup Replace "/media/samba/" with the path of the folder you want to share Replace "YOUR_USERNAME" with your username Save
Hit CTRL+X, Y, EnterSet permissions replacing "/media/samba" with your defined directory.
sudo chmod 0777 /media/sambaStart Samba
sudo /etc/init.d/samba start
Add/edit/delete network users
Add user
sudo smbpasswd -a system_user sudo pico /etc/samba/smbusers
Insert following line into new file
system_username = "network username"Save Edit user
sudo smb -a system_usernameDelete user
sudo smbpasswd -x system_username

9. That's it
All you have to do now is copy all your music/movies/whathaveyous to your media server and start streaming it from any computer on your network.

SURGERY

Today was a very somewhat exciting and somewhat painfull day for me. I went through surgery invoving a three hour proocedure. I had bmcc tubes put in my ears and had my adeniods removed. My throut hurts like hell. Well i can finally here a mouse fart. My ears are so sensitive to sound now that they hurt. It is so painfull. The worse part is that it pops every two seconds. fews days of bed rest and i will be posting some really nice articles. take care for now.
