MUTEK signs an agreement with the Cervantino Festival

Montreal, November 4, 2009 - Recently returned from Guanajuato, Mexico, the MUTEK team is proud to announce a new agreement, signed this past October 30, for collaboration with the Cervantino International Festival, Latin America's most important artistic event and one of the largest multidisciplinary festivals in the world.

Quebec was the guest of honour of the 37^th edition of the Cervantino Festival, which took place from October 14 to November 1^st, 2009. Invited to curate a program reflecting its activities and spirit, MUTEK was able to make the most of this opportunity by signing an agreement for collaboration between both festivals for several editions to come. Cervantino's call to MUTEK's expertise shows its interest and commitment in reaching out to a new generation in Mexico that is passionate about media arts and electronic music. The agreement will see a creative partnership emerge between the two festivals and will allow MUTEK to present a wide range of multidisciplinary projects at the Cervantino Festival.

This agreement reinforces MUTEK's presence in Latin America, where the organisation has been active during several years already, notably with editions of the festival in Argentina, Chile and Mexico. MUTEK has many reasons to be extremely proud of its new collaboration and the recognition that comes along with it, especially as the Cervantino Festival has also just signed a similar agreement with the prestigio us Edinburgh International Festival, another landmark event on the international stage.

As part of its first year at the Cervantino Festival this year, MUTEK had the honour of presenting Quebecois artists AKUFEN, STEPHEN BEAUPRÉ, GUILLAUME & THE COUTU-DUMONTS, GHISLAIN POIRIER, ARTIFICIEL, SKOLTZ_KOLGEN, NOMIG, GEODEZIK and VINCENT LEMIEUX, as well as Germany's MODESELEKTOR and PFADFINDEREI and Mexico's own MURCOF.

Always at the cutting edge of the international digital arts scene, and celebrating its 10^th anniversary this year, MUTEK is the most respected festival of digital creativity and electronic music in North America. The festival has a proven record of attracting an audience from all over the globe, a quality that was recognized this year when MUTEK was named winner of the Grands Prix du Tourisme Québécois 2009 in its category. An annual gathering for diverse contemporary artistic explorations, international media and cultural institutions, and now heading into its second decade of existence, MUTEK finds itself well-placed to lead Quebec and the digital arts into the 21^st century.

The eleventh edition of MUTEK will take place in Montreal June 2 to 6, 2010.

Please note that as MUTEK is dedicated to presenting live performances, DJ mixes are not considered. We strongly encourage applicants to accompany their submissions with live recordings of their performances. MUTEK takes Mexico by Storm

MUTEK IN MEXICO

As you all know, MUTEK already has an impressive track record in Mexico. Over the last 5 years we've seen 5 editions of the MUTEK.MX festival and several other satellite events thanks to the dedicated efforts of the MUTEK.MX team.

With the MUTEK.MX festival taking a break this year in favour of individual events and showcases, MUTEK took on a major involvement in the Cervantino festival in Guanajuato, which runs October 14th to November 1, 2009.

With a reputation as the most important artistic event in Latin America, the CERVANTINO FESTIVAL is also one of the world's largest multidisciplinary festivals, reuniting more than 2000 artists from over 30 countries to present a showcase of arts and culture ranging from music, theatre, dance and cinema to academic and professional activities. The 37th edition features Quebec as its invited guest of honour, with MUTEK programming no less that 5 events featuring 2 installations and 9 acts: a selection of projects that serve to illustrate the diversity and know-how of artists working in the digital and electronic arts today.

To begin, two Montreal duos will take turns presenting multimedia installations at the Chávez Morado Gallery. During the first week, SKOLTZ_KOLGEN will present their EPIDERM project, an immersive performance that explores that explores an infinitesimally small, fictitious world through a nano optic canal. ARTIFICIEL take over for the second week, presenting their project, CONDEMNED_BULBES, an installation of large, incandescent light bulbs that together create a choir of raw electricity.

With the PIKNIC program, presented at Los Pastitos, MUTEK puts forth one of the formulas (developed with the Piknic Electronik team) that has contributed to its success in Montreal over the past several years; an event that invites everyone from families to seasoned partygoers to enjoy quality electronic music outdoors. During this event the Cervantino public will be able to enjoy the "crème de la crème" of Montreal's electronic artists, with live sets by the famed AKUFEN, GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS and STEPHEN BEAUPRÉ along with a special DJ appearance of co-curator VINCENT LEMIEUX. As a preview to the PIKNIC program, these same artists will be performing in Mexico City on October 15th, 2009 thanks to the MUTEK.MX team, and AKUFEN will be bringing his live act to Santiago Chile on October 9, 2009 courtesy of MUTEK.CL.

To illustrate the level of international exchanges that never cease to continue between artists working in the MUTEK fold, MUTEK has also thought to unite Mexican and Quebecois creators. The result, a high-calibre encounter between Mexican musician MURCOF (Tijuana) and two visual artists from the GEODEZIK production company (Montreal) with whom MUTEK has collaborated many times, JIMMY LAKATOS and NOMIG., specialists in video-scenography. Presented at the Templo de la Compañía.

To wrap-up MUTEK's programming, MODESELEKTOR, frequent collaborators and favourites of the MUTEK audience, bring their grandiose act to the Explanada de la Alhóndiga de Granaditas. Their headliner show at MUTEK 2007 in Montreal was declared show of the year by numerous media in Montreal, and their spectacular showing at MUTEK_10 only reinforced the monumental aura surrounding their live performances. A program full of all beats eclectic, this event opens with Montreal's own GHISLAIN POIRIER.

MUTEK [AR] is the local and autonomous Argentinean branch of the MUTEK family. In constant contact with its counterparts in Mexico, Chile and Montreal, MUTEK [AR] continues to develop the worldwide digital arts network by creating a space where the projects and artists presented are just as important as the context that they're working in. Constantly striving to satisfy an avid and demanding public, MUTEK [AR] has held 10 events in Buenos Aires that have showcased over 40 local artists and 30 international artists since its inception in 2005.

In order to celebrate 5 years in Argentina, and 10 years in Canada, MUTEK [AR] presents a series of activities curated by the local branch in Buenos Aires. The program proposes experimental performances at the LIMb0, an associated digital arts and technology laboratory that holds monthly events, including a concert by Sergi Jordà (ES) presenting the visually engaging instrument made famous by Björk, the Reactable.

Inspired by MUTEK Montreal's constantly increasing diversity of programming, this year's MICRO MUTEK series is divided over 3 nights at Niceto Club, with special international guests such as Akufen (CA), Mathias Kaden (DE), T. Raumschiere (DE), Qzen (US) and Zombie Zombie (FR) (photographed by Talu). From dubstep to electro, passing through techno, house, nu disco, psychedelic rock and minimalism, the MICRO MUTEK series will liven up the night with live performances, jams, and instrumental acts.

Entrées, mains, desserts and all the little extras, MUTEK [AR] hopes to keep surprising and amusing festivalgoers that have been with us for a long time, and to initiate the palate of those that are only beginning to experiment...

MUTEK 2009: Our Closing Thoughts

After ten days of recovery, we’re still grappling with the most fitting way to explain the utterly remarkable experience that MUTEK_10 turned out be for all involved. Those of you who joined us in Montreal a few weeks back have likely noticed that this year’s anniversary edition was something special indeed, ranking among the most gratifying undertakings we have ever mounted. We would have liked a bit more control over the weather, but pretty much every other detail had the good fortune of going our way.

What made 2009 especially poignant was the consensus that everyone who found the time to come out to the festival, whether from just up the street or halfway across the globe, arrived in Montreal out of a sense of natural belonging to a community. As a result, the box office rang up a whopping 50% growth from last year, amounting to a total of 18,000 entries. When we include all those who witnessed the free outdoor Extra_Muros series, early estimates reveal an overall attendance of 70,000 entries for the festival in its entirety. Our artists and admirers have worked together, often with little more than enthusiasm for guidance, to harvest the fruits of a decade’s worth of passion.

More than ever, as MUTEK grows in reputation and scope, it is our grassroots base of supporters that we turn to for inspiration and for confirmation of our place in North America. Without the support of people who take the future of electronic music and digital creativity as seriously as we do, MUTEK would cease to be the individual experience that it is.

So, all we can say in response to this unprecedented level of development and support is… THANK YOU!

In many ways, MUTEK_10 felt like the passing of a milestone, the end of a cycle of emergence and self-discovery, and the beginning of a new era of renewed inspiration, reinvention, and experimentation. The strong faith and reinvigorated hope in the North American scene is certainly real and ripe for opportunity. Nowhere was this better exemplified than in our Thursday afternoon panel discussion on the status of the North American circuit for electronic artists, where an audience of 150 packed in to find out just where their community was headed.

MUTEK_10: FIVE DAYS OF STELLAR PERFORMANCES

If we were to say that any one aspect of MUTEK_10 was most rewarding in our eyes, then it would have to be the rise in status and anticipation for the more experimental tendencies of the festival’s digital creativity. The rising caliber of the A\VISIONS series, the addition of the Saturday evening A\V+ featuring the Raster-Noton crew, the ambient-leaning nature of the Savoy Room on Thursday night, Eric Mattson’s curation of the PLAY series, Robert Henke & Christopher Bauder’s triple-presentation of ATOM at the Theatre Maisonneuve, special presentations like Artificiel’s Beyond 6281 and Martin Tétreault’s Quatuor, not to mention the citywide presence of the Extra_Muros architectural art installations by the likes of visual label AntiVJ, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, and others – all these factors conspired to deliver a festival within a festival for lovers of electronic experimentation.

Not to be outdone, 2009’s NOCTURNES and PIKNICS flourished in all directions more than ever before, with variations of electronic rock, disco revivalism, dubstep, norteño, emo, soca, and hip-hop all building onto the templates of house and techno. More than ever, the fusion of digitality and rhythm continues to redefine the borders between progression and accessibility, and MUTEK is committed to following its artists wherever their imaginations take them.

MUTEK_10 was also the edition in which we celebrated the long and fruitful careers of a number of pivotal figures from the international scene, and nowhere was this made more obvious than the insightful nature of our Friday afternoon panel featuring Uwe Schmidt, Tobias Freund, and Thomas Fehlmann – a daytime highlight for many festivalgoers. Veterans were out in full force representing the contemporary history of electronic music. Wolfgang Voigt turned in a genuinely magical 90-minute Gas performance on opening night that raised the bar for every act to follow. Thomas Fehlmann’s Saturday afternoon set was roundly declared as one of the best performances of the festival, and the stakes kept getting higher as singular performances by Atom TM and tobias. took the stage later that night.

Perhaps it was fitting that Canadians provided many of 2009’s high points. For many, the most rewarding moment of the entire festival was the triumphant return to the stage of Akufen, who brought down the house with his stellar premiere of new material, proving once and for all that few have a better grasp of rhythm and musical signatures than Marc Leclair. At the other end of the spectrum, Montreal’s Artificiel won over a broad swathe of new admirers with their premiere of the utterly original POWEr. Mike Shannon, Ernesto Ferreyra and the Cynosure crew made the Savoy Room the place to be on Friday night, and Stephen Beaupré made the wait for his Wagon Repair debut all that much more anticipated with his preview of fantastic new tracks.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PRESS

One way to measure the festival’s exceptional impact this year is the number of media present. Over 150 local and international journalists converged from 13 countries to cover MUTEK, including Fact, Tsugi, XLR8R, The Wire and Resident Advisor. We’d like to highlight some of the most notable write-ups we’ve seen so far:

- Resident Advisor editor Todd Burns assembled an overwhelming oral history of MUTEK and Canadian techno that serves as essential reading for anyone interested in the growth and development of the festival and its community.

- In The Onion’s AV Club, Andy Battaglia published a glowing extended review of the festival.

- Boggers of all matters experimental such as unBLOGGED’s TJ Norris, Rhizome/Serial Consign/Vague Terrain’s Greg J. Smith, Create Digital Music’s Peter Kirn, and Basic Sounds’ Andrea D. Ayotte rallied together to represent the festival’s digital creativity output.

- XLR8R’s Ken Taylor presented an in-depth interview with festival founder and artistic director Alain Mongeau, covering the history and purpose behind MUTEK’s decade.

- Little White Earbuds’ Will Lynch took in the MUTEK weekend.

- Brooklyn Vegan’s Zach Dilgard and Edward Hagen, 88 Culture’s David Fogel, Urb ’s Amanda Connon-Unda, and Szenemag’s Sandra Pahlke & Jörg Thiele all concocted extensive multi-media blogs that featured excellent photo essays and intelligent commentary.

MUTEK, ICAS & LE REGROUPEMENT

Those who are familiar with MUTEK’s activities know that the organization’s chief strength is its ability to create viable working communities in a globalized culture, and to that end MUTEK_10 served as a platform for the initial gathering of two major networks:

- the ICAS (International Cities for Advanced Sound), a gathering of over 20 international like-minded festivals from Europe, North America and South America. This initial meeting laid the groundwork for numerous future opportunities and collaborations intended to fortify the bonds between presenters of digital art in the near future.

- Le Regroupement, a grouping of six Montreal-based cultural events (Fringe Montreal, MEG Montreal, Pop Montreal, Piknic Electronik, MUTEK and Escales Improbables de Montréal) whose mission is to promote new, multidisciplinary work, and to offer artists from Montreal and elsewhere an international showcase to express their creativity, uniqueness, culture, and passion.

LOOKING AHEAD…

Speaking of the future, we’re already in the planning stages of numerous upcoming events. You can look for a MUTEK presence at this year’s Cervantino Festival in Mexico this October, which will likely coincide with showcases in Argentina and Chile. Next spring, fans can also look forward to the return of one of this edition’s most successful previews: the MUTEK North American tour! And, of course, our ten candles and sustained momentum will lead us impatiently to the 11th edition of MUTEK, slated for June 2nd to 6th, 2010. Mark your calendars!

It is with great pleasure that MUTEK announces the 2009 edition of DIGI_SECTION, a two-day series of panels, workshops, and master classes, presented by MOOG AUDIO in collaboration with SAT [TRANSFORM]. This year’s professional program takes place on Thursday, May 28th , and Friday, May 29th , from 11 am to 5pm . The panels endeavor to highlight the issues and personalities currently shaping the international electronic music scene. Meanwhile, the workshops bring together the cutting edge in technology manufacturers for a series of demonstrations for the newest in hardware and software available to the electronic-music producer.

North America has contributed profoundly to the global culture of electronic music and digital art. And yet, historically it has remained in the shadows of a much more organized and lucrative European counterpart. The challenges involved in presenting contemporary electronic music in North America’s culturally dispersed, deeply rockist environment have been much discussed: the lack of radio support, promotion and effective distribution channels, fickle audiences, vast geographies. But now there’s a new network slowly forming that shows promise and could be a signpost of change. This panel assembles North America's new decision-makers to discuss the issues and possibilities for electronic music and digital culture in the New World, emphasizing the power of collectivity, networks and imagination.

DERIVATIVE VISUALS present RASTER-NOTON FRAME.SYNC

Derivative will demonstrate the design and creation of visuals for frame.sync, their collaboration with Raster-Noton at Transmediale, OFFF, MUTEK and Sonar. TouchDesigner 077 is Derivative's 'visual thinking' software tool, used to make interactive art and applications by integrating 2D/3D graphics, audio and user-interface building. For this workshop, Greg Hermanovic and Markus Heckmann will reverse-engineer the making-of frame.sync and other examples of interactive media.

NICK BUGAYEV is a producer of melodic techno, with recent and upcoming releases on Tribal Vision Records and Different Pieces. A staunch minimalist gear-wise, Bugayev sees the Lemur as one of the essential pieces of his toolbox. He's put the controller to use in almost all of his projects. A regular contributor to the Lemur user base, he also initiated the Monemur controller emulation project.

An experience always filled with laughs and the occasional hair raising stunt, this workshop we will be highlighting the new features of Ableton Live 8 as well as looking at effective methods for making the most Live on stage and in the studio. Ableton Live users of all experience levels are also encouraged to bring their questions on any and all aspects of production using Live.

PEER STREAMING AND METADATA FILING: NEW TRENDS IN ONLINE MUSIC DISSEMINATION

The definition and boundaries of cultural piracy grows murkier by the year. Peer-to-peer streaming, file-sharing, cloud storage, and wiki-oriented open databases assembled collectively - these methods of cultural interaction have become the normal way of sharing knowledge and art forms. If an entire society deems certain tools and principles as the most effective avenues for communication, then can these networks still be considered piracy? This panel of communications-industry professionals converges to explore the many questions underlying our new digital communities and the legalities that hold them back, in order to assess if our notion of piracy has grown redundant.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: AN ORAL HISTORY OF NECESSARY EVILS

A free-ranging and casual exchange with pioneers from the German techno community, featuring UWE SCHMIDT (aka AtomTM, Señor Coconut etc), THOMAS FEHLMANN (The Orb) and TOBIAS FREUND (Pink Elln, nsi, Sieg Uber Die Sonne). Led by journalist Philip Sherburne (The Wire), this panel will look back over the careers of three producers who each bring at least two decades of career experiences to the table. In the process, the three producers will explore such weighty subjects as the creation of artistic illusions, their perpetual state of artistic crisis, their provocative views on the state of electronic music, as well as other light-hearted and amusing subjects. Created in 2007, ANTIVJ was initiated by a group of European artists as a “visual label” to espouse a collective identity working to further the use of light and its influence on our perception of space.
