Packed with everything from sultry, sugary female vocals to gorgeous string filled arrangements suitable for any elevator voyage and including many classic Italian soundtrack recordings. It’s eclectic, eccentric, exotic and erotic! 18 tracks from the likes of Piero Umiliani, Riz Ortolani, Romano Mussolini and more. Right Tempo. 2007.
Customer Review: Mood Music from overseas
I actually purchased this on vinyl first and later found it that there was a collection of ten volumes available on cd. After ordering all ten volumes, I still find this one to be the most appealing. This cd captures some very cool jazz arrangements that were used as movie music. I am not familiar with any of the movies or the composers, but if you love jazz, you will not go wrong with this disc. Excellent!

Formed in New York City in 1983, White Lion was fronted by charismatic, pin-up handsome lead singer Mike Tramp.
Customer Review: Remastered, Absolute Rock
After many years of not listening to White Lion, this cd, bought on a whim, is what turned me into a fan all over again. I sat and listened to it, and I can only describe it as watching a string of old Mike Tyson fights (before he turned ear-biting psychotic) and watching him demolish one guy after another after another and getting better and stronger and fiercer with each punch. This cd is nothing but fifteen absolute rock-n-roll hits from the studio and another fifteen live, high-octane hard-rock epics. Each one will having you thinking it just can’t get better. And then it will. And it’s amazing how many hits these guys had. I’d forgotten half of them and started singing along in my head with every single one once I heard just the first few notes. They’re up-beat but rock solid songs that deserve a lot more attention than they get. Granted these were all MTV Top 40, high-ranking hits, but few people remember White Lion today. They were much, much more than a flash in the pan. Mike Tramp had a genius stroke for writing hits, and Vito Bratta’s guitar musicianship is unparalleled, and he’s one of the few guys who sounds just as good if not better live. In the era of Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Warrant, and Bon Jovi, White Lion carved out a niche all their own, part die-hard heavy metal, part pop, and 100% rock-n-roll greatness. This cd comes with an eleven-song New York concert in which Bratta blisters himself through every song on the set. They say he has nothing to do with music anymore, and this live set will show you how sad and how much of a loss that is. Another highlight here is how much the crow gets involved. I’m telling you: at one point in time, these guys were all over the top of the ladder. Bratta does by-the-way fill riffs that most guys never get to in a career of playing. Mike Tramp’s voice was one-of-a-kind memorable, more for being unique than amazing. But, in a good way, no one else has ever had a voice like his. It’s tough and gritty and ultra sexy (so the girls I know say) all at the same time. It was nice to see a forgotten, hardrock great, “The Lady of the Valley” on the live set. Rhino had to make some decisions here, and they went for the biggest hits. And no band ever had so many hits in so short a span of time. Do yourself a favor and rediscover them. You get an unbelievable 30 songs, and each one will have you jumping off your chair. The cd also includes very thorough liner notes chronicling White Lion’s entire career. This is a necessary addition to any rock or metal collection.

Customer Review: Simply Put…..AWESOME!
A remastered best of with a full live show (Mtv Ritz concert) from the ‘Pride’ tour…what more could you ask for? Buy this!

Ormandy really seems to like this music, and he lovingly and energetically portrays these pieces. There is a tunefulness and musicality here that is lacking in many other performances of these works. Highly recommended.

As for the Manhattan Transfer, I’m not really thrilled - some of the tracks are really cookin’, but there’s too much pop music and dated stage humor that would make even good old Satchmo uncomfortable…

However, bot performances are long enough (around 70 minutes each) to make this DVD a good value for money, particularly if you don’t mind The Manhattan Transfer’s mix of jazz and pop music.
Customer Review: Sic Transit Manhattan Transfer
I bought this because it had the Transfer’s 1986 Vocalese show for a good price; I haven’t watched the Carmen McRae performance. I can count the number of jazz vocalists I’ll listen to on the fingers of one hand (Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Nat King Cole.)

The video and audio quality are okay, like standard definition TV and FM radio, nothing great.

The DVD records the Transfer’s 1986 show in Tokyo. It’s a straight recording of the stage performance from beginning to end, no inserts or voice-overs, and only the set changes are edited out. It’s a superb anthology of MT’s successful career (beginning in the early 1970s), of their pop and jazz music take-offs and put-ons. They conclude the show’s first act with Miles Davis’s “Movin”, and it’s hot. The band cooks.

They are older - they are no longer that cohort group who danced and romanced to “Gloria” before meeting up and forming Manhattan Transfer; so they perform it as homage to their own insecure origins, without the mockery, no sneering, just glorious street-corner harmony and the harmless irony of pop wherever it happens. In the third act they served up watered-down versions of “Birdland” and “How High the Moon”; but they included the (then) contemporaneous “Shaker Song”.

By 1986 their days of wine-glass shattering notes are behind them; their exuberance is still genuine if wholly professional now; yet there’s hardly anyone who gets it anymore. Inextricable Transfer devotees will appreciate Janis’s third-act homage of her earrings - a dancing woman in a green island dress.

I first got the album on vinyl back around 1981. It was a Japanese import on so-called virgin vinyl, the best of the lot back then. Then I waited and waited and waited for it to come out on CD. I had almost thought I was waiting in vain. My mother gave me a CD called Lady Sings The Blues back in the 90s, which had the same cover, but turned out to be vol. 4 in the Billie Holiday Story. A major disappointment, since the original album is so wonderful.

Thank you to whoever finally got smart and released the original, with no stupid addons. This does not need bonus tracks, indeed they would seriously detract from it.

This album is from 1956, three years before Miss Holiday died at the age of 44, a sad and criminal loss to the world. Her voice is definitely the worse for wear here, but the passion and sheer artistry shine forth in spite of vocal limitations. Every song is a winner, and the order is important to the whole listening experience, which is why I was so upset at the other release, which had some of these songs, but not all. It is a concept album ahead of its time.

Lady in Satin, the next one, is prime, but this one, imho, is better, because Holiday’s backing is by jazz musicians and not an orchestra, and seems more realistic to me. I don’t have her Last Recordings yet, so can’t comment on them. But if you want one Billie Holiday recording in your collection, this should be it. If you want more, get this, and then get some of her earlier stuff, when her voice was strong and before drugs and alcohol took their toll on her.

This version is definitely a desert island disc, assuming a desert island would have electricity. Make no mistake, get this one and not the one that looks just like it. You won’t be sorry.
