Each one has several songs that I love to sing along with, and I often sing or hum the catchiest parts off and on during the day.

But — the narration is kind of annoying. And I feel bad expressing this opinion, because I really do like these works, but I would like them so-o-o much better if they had hired professional actors to do the spoken parts. I’m sorry, the tunes are great, but the spoken lines fall flat! Very amateur sounding. I’m pretty sure that even I could do a better job reading the lines. So, if you are easily annoyed by that type of production flaw, be fore-warned. But of course, the kids don’t mind, and most assuredly don’t even notice.
Customer Review: My kid loves it!
I bought this CD about a year ago and my son (5) has been listening to it regularly since that time. The songs are quite good and the adventure that links them together is educational. My son is particularly fond of the Hadrosaur from Hackensack and dances to it over and over. He is so interested in this music, we have now gone to see the live performance three times in the DC area. He is also planning to dress up as the Hadrosaur for Haloween. This is the best kid album I have ever bought.

Outside of drummer/friend Philly Jo Jones, Evans has rarely played with as much fire as he does here, not to discredit his regular bassist at the time, the excellent Eddie Gomez, but it’s no surprise that this record won a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance. All the tracks shine but in particularly, Evans & company deliver such an impassioned performance of the Miles Davis modal tune, “Nardis”, that one left me breathless. I could never understand why the succeeding drummer, the overly busy Marty Morell, stayed on so long with Bill. He lacked the precision and drive of DeJohnette, Philly Jo and Paul Motian and as such was a liability rather than an asset to the trio. Recommended for Evans fans definitely.
Customer Review: One of Evans best
There have been a multitude of recordings from the Montreux Jazz Festival over the years. This is one of the first I ever heard and it remains my favourite. From the introductions to the trio in French (which somehow adds to the magic of the recording) right through to the last notes this is a classic recording.

The trio with Jack De Johnette and Eddie Gomez only existed for a short period of time but you’d never guess it from these recordings. The recording quality is crisp and sharp, baring in mind its 40 years old and the selection of material is an eclectic mixture of standards with a couple of Evans own originals (One for Helen & Walkin’ Up) thrown in for good measure.

Highlights for me are the wonderful solo Piano rendition of ‘I Loves You Porgy’, which is the finest version of this Gershwin classic I know regardless of music genre. You can hear Evans marvellous touch and beautiful phrasing throughout this track. Second favourite is a surprisingly fiery version of ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’.

Be in no doubt there are no weak tracks on this album and highlights abound thoughout it. Only time prevents me from writing about every single track.

The result was a rare marriage between an arranger-composer’s conception and the ideal collection of musicians to execute it. The material is all based somehow on the blues, but Nelson’s structural and harmonic extensions make it highly varied, suggesting ballads, hoedowns, and swing. The band is one of those groupings that seem only to have been possible around 1960, a roster so strong that the leader’s name was actually listed fourth on the cover. Nelson shares the solo space with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, alto saxophonist and flutist Eric Dolphy, and pianist Bill Evans, while bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Roy Haynes contribute support and baritone saxophonist George Barrow adds depth. In stark contrast to Dolphy’s brilliant, convulsive explosions, Nelson’s tenor solos are intriguingly minimalist, emphasizing a tight vibrato and unusual note choices. It’s not quite Kind of Blue (nothing is), but Blues and the Abstract Truth is an essential recording, one that helped define the shape of jazz in the ’60s. –Stuart Broomer
Customer Review: An Oliver Nelson classic full of all stars
What more can one say of this classic album except that it ranks next to “Kind of Blue” as one of those essentials you cannot do without. Every tune in this album is flawless with “Stolen Moments”, perhaps the jazz standard like “So What”, a staple in a jazz musician’s repetoire. A recent bio on Bill Evans stated that he was miscast in this blues oriented album but one listen to “Teenie’s Blues” and you can believe he’s wrong. Though Evans himself has stated he is not strong in the blues, this track has tinges of Red Garland, an pianist that Evans replaced in Miles Davis’ group and one could mistake Evans for perhaps Ahmad Jamal or Garland. Nevertheless Bill, like the others (Dolphy, Hubbard, Nelson, Chambers & Haynes) turns in a yeoman performance here particularly in his duet with Roy Haynes on “Cascades” with his harmonic leaps and twists. Make this one an essential!!
Customer Review: Nothing abstract about this truth!
One of the truly indelible timeless classics of jazz - just as brilliant today as on original release. Take a handful of the creme de la greatest talents of the ’60’s (or any previous or subsequent age), stir in one of the most gifted arranger-composers, and voila! Deserves to be named an Amazon Essential Recording. Check out Nelson’s arrangements on the swingin’ Sonny Rollins score to Lewis Gilbert’s “Alfie” created about a half-decade later.

The special was produced in cooperation with WQED/Pittsburgh by the same team that created the famed Doo Wop 50 special (the #1 PBS fundraiser of all time). This new box set contains sixty chartbusting hits, from the genesis of rock in the mid-Fifties, through doo-wop, surf music, Motown, Brill Building pop and the British Invasion.
The track list is a Who s Who of rock: Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, The Supremes, Roy Orbison and many, many more.
With the PBS special airing throughout the holiday season, Rock n Roll at 50 makes a perfect gift item for the last-minute shopper!
Includes a 40-page booklet–chock-full of photos and track-by-track liner notes–and attractive digibook-style packaging. Every track was a Top 40 hit, and most were Top 10!
Customer Review: A First-Rate Collection from Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Golden Era
What’s not to like? This sixty-song companion to the PBS documentary is an astonishing testament to rock ‘n’ roll’s golden era. Nearly half of the artists represented here (26 by my count) have been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Beginning with Bill Haley’s 1954 hit “Shake Rattle and Roll,” these three CDs provide a crash course in everything from doo wop to soul to the British Invasion.

While many of these songs are frequently anthologized, there are a number of surprises. Instead of “My Boyfriend’s Back,” the Angels are represented by their debut hit from 1961, “‘Til.” Also, instead of hearing “It’s My Party” for the umpteenth time, you get “You Don’t Own Me.” Lou Christie, who is best remembered for “Two Faces Have I” and “Lighting Strikes,” is represented by “The Gypsy Cried.” And Jack Scott (who I unfortunately NEVER hear on oldies radio) is represented by his million-selling 1958 hit “My True Love.”

I do, however, have a couple issues with this box set. First of all is the sequencing. The songs are not chronological, so on disc-1 you get “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” (1964) following “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On” (1957), and later on the same disc “Lady Willpower” (1968) follows “When You Dance” (1956). And how does “Lady Willpower” fit the box set title (A GALAXY OF HITS FROM ROCK’S FIRST DECADE)? If the oldest song is from 1954, shouldn’t the set end with 1963–or 1964 at the latest? Moreover, 1964 is represented by 14 songs (almost a fourth of the total) and 1965 has the second-most songs with seven. [Also, 1966 has three and 1967, 1968 and 1969 each have one.] I’m not really upset with the emphasis on the mid- to late-sixties selections–as an aging Baby Boomer I think these are great songs–I’m just pointing out that there are twice times as many sixties songs (41), as there are fifties songs (19).

One final concern, with each disc averaging just over fifty minutes in length, the price is a bit steep. But when you look at the quality of music in this collection and the terrific 40-page booklet, this is an amazing collection. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Customer Review: Absolutely primo box set!
My kids got this for me for my birthday today, and I listened to the whole thing in one sitting. Absolutely first-rate collection of classic early rock, with some interesting obscurities thrown in for good measure. The booklet that comes with it is also a good read. It’s everything good about oldies radio with none of the bad stuff–no repeats, commercials, or irritating jingles. This is the perfect gift for anyone who love oldies.

It is not easy to obtain so rewarding works, because Mr. Ozawa simply is out of comparing. The musical stature of Walter Weller has not appreciated yet in his fair dimension, by unknown reasons. He is beloved widely in England but unexplainably in the rest of the world.

With these notable exceptions, this album deserves a special honor seat in your library. The first Symphony OP. 25, well known as Classical Symphony finds in Sergei Koussevitzski, an unbeatable performance, since its first release this version has became a reference standard. There’ s a notable recording (not released in CD format yet) of Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The Fifth Symphony under Antal Dorati’s conduction is another historical issue. And finally there is a memorable performance of Jean Martinon conducting the Chicago Symphony.

So if you can get all my recommendations plus this set you don’ t have to worry for finding any other performances in the market.

The sound is excellent and the Second, Third and Sixth are probably the most idiomatic readings that I know until this date. Go for this rewarding set.

Customer Review: Pulsating Prokofiev
When it comes to major label, value-priced, space-saving, slim-paper boxed sets of the Prokofiev Symphonies, there are really only two choices — the Ozawa/Berlin on DG and this set on Decca/London featuring conductor Walter Weller leading both the London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras. My choice was easy — in a continuing effort not to duplicate our collections, I bought this set because my dad has the Ozawa. Both cycles are terrific, and at such a small price, serious collectors can probably afford both. It should be noted that there is a slight difference in selections offered on the two sets. Both, of course, feature all seven Symphonies, but the Ozawa rounds out its selections with “Lieutenant Kije,” while the Weller set includes the “Russian Overture” and “Scythian Suite.” Also, for those who care, the Ozawa box is in digital while this set, recorded between 1975 & ‘79, is all in analog. The choice is yours but either way you are going to get first-rate performances of the music of one of the greatest Soviet composers.
