Okay, I waited a day because I didn’t want to sound like the gushing, biased grandmother/mom. But why not just be who I am? LOVED the post - the writing was great, the images vivid, and I loved your Ella-in-the-future musing - hope I’m still around when she graduates from med school! Yes, I teared up, too, but then, I do that on all the posts…:)

On another note, our car stereo is the same way (I feel like I never want to hear Smashing Pumpkin’s “To Sheila” ever again).

And of course, the “biscuits” that Adam longed for at KFC were NOT “cookies.” They were “American biscuits,” flaky pastry bread that is not sweet, but buttery.

Your previous blog entry referenced American diet as amounting to, “We eat the world. We have taco night, followed by Chinese take out, spaghetti, and chicken cordon bleu. A week later, it’s tupperware terror as you prepare for Sunday’s grocery trip.” Doesn’t strike me so much as an in-depth tour of world cuisine as stretching out a theme park visit for days. And now you take the poor Bavarians to task for not offering cookies at KFC? I call foul play!

Just as American expectations of Europe are conveyed by the Dutch side walk café terrace - sentiments oh so shamelessly displayed (and nurtured) in Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” -, naturally Europeans have no idea of American lifestyle either except via a select group of products taken on pure whim to be representative of it. If it was my pick, I’d have to attribute all American stereotypes to the countless Chevy Chase movies watched on weekends, on Christmas or Easter vacations, on German TV.

And THAT’S why there’s Hershey’s in Germany even though it’s so terrible.
