Dick Jauron is First to be Fired... Really?

With all of the hoop-la surrounding the firing of Dick Jauron, I have to ask: how was he the first coach fired during this NFL season (I understand that Jim Zorn was stripped and crucified as a coach, but he was not fired)?

What about Eric Mangini? How in the world does he still have a job? Here is a guy who has more player grievances filed against him than he has wins.

With the stellar 1-7 season, the fines that he throws around like Gatorade cups on the sideline, and the musical chairs that he plays with his starting quarterback position; I am in shock and awe that he remains on Cleveland's sideline while Jauron becomes the first officially fired coach of the season.

Chalk another one up for the unfailing logic of the NFL.

Tom and Tiger: Day One

The story of the day from the British Open: Tom Watson shoots sixty-five at Turnberry to finish the day one stroke out of the lead. Watson’s showing in the first round is reminiscent of his epic 1977 showdown with Jack Nicklaus, which is spawning the question: will it last? Of course it won’t last; but is it a great storyline? Absolutely.

Tiger Woods, on the other hand, is not exactly playing up to par (pardon the pun). He finished the day even; and if he continues to play the kind of unintelligent golf that he has showcased during round one, I predict him to finish the four rounds well above par.

Tiger, stop with the driver already! Use the three wood, or maybe…I don’t know…your laser three iron! That’s all you need. Turnberry is not a course where you have to rock the driver in order to compete; and not one of your drives has found the fairway. Take those two points, add a little common sense, and save yourself from ending up plus ten. Woods, put the driver down, hit the range with it, and bust it back out for the next tournament.

Kevin Smith: Still Talking

My man, Kevin Smith of the Detroit Lions, is on the rage again. You might recall his, "Detroit to the playoffs this coming season" guarantee a while back. Well, this time Smith is throwing down with the, "not only will Detroit make it to the playoffs, but I will lead them there" guarantee.

In a recent blog entry, Smith states the following:

For me being in shape and ready to go is a must. It’s not even an issue. I feel I’m a tempo-setter, so I have to be in great shape and looking and feeling good for this training camp.
I feel I have the mentality that I’m the lead dog and I’m going to set the tempo. It’s a mentality I like to take on and you can do it if you have the killer instinct. When you lead by example, there are always some guys who notice you and want to go in the same direction, which is great as long as it’s a positive direction.

I love this guy, and he is exactly what the 0-16 Detroit Lions need going into this season: if he can deliver. His mouth and his blog are writing all kinds of checks that his legs and his head are going to have to cash on the field.

I will say, though, that he has the talent and potential to make good on his playoff promises; and if he can turn an 0-16 team into a playoff contender (even if they lose 75-0 in the first round), he will have solidified instant superstar status.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on their game 7 victory over the Detroit Red Wings (in Detroit, mind you).

The Steelers take the Super Bowl, the Penguins take the Cup; now for a total miracle, let's see if the Pirates can take the World Series!

Wow...that's funny... no, really, the Pirates are awful... really awful...and they've been awful for quite some time now.

Regardless, it's good to be a Pittsburgian!

Going for Game Three

I am about to sit down and watch game three of the Magic/Lakers series. I'm pulling for the Magic; so hopefully they can make something happen, as they have many times in these playoffs, with their backs against the wall.

I think Nelson needs to ride the bench, and Alston needs to lead at the point guard position. Partly to stroke Alston's ego (whatever it takes to win, even if it means pandering to whining, grown, millionaire, men), and partly because Alston is rusty. I think he was brought back abruptly, and way too quickly.

Dwight Howard needs to be the defensive force that we all know he can be, and Turkaglu needs to drain the threes. These two guys are the Magic's dynamic duo, and they have to perform as such.

The Magic are an offensive team. They win by outscoring the opponent, not keeping the opponent from scoring. They are not a outstanding defensive force, and there is no need to try to be as long as they can get into a rhythm with their jump shots.

It's a must win tonight for the Orlando underdogs, but that's a position that I think they have become accustomed to.

Randy Johnson to Join Elite Company

Randy Johnson goes for win 300 again today. Due to the rainout yesterday, he was unable to seal the deal.

Arguably, the most dominant left-hander in the history of the game, Johnson will join only five other left-handed pitchers with 300 or more wins (they include: Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton, Ed Plank, Tom Glavine, Lefty Grove).

Is there really any question that today is the day? Does anyone really think that Randy Johnson won’t nail number 300? I mean, on a bad day, I could pitch up a win against the Nationals. Watch out Randy! Those Nationals are gunning for you with their amazing 14-36 record.

Sure, San Francisco dropped the first game of the series (10-6), but I don’t think so much that Washington won it as much as I think that San Francisco lost it. Besides, who pitched the first game? Not The Big Unit.

Andy Roddick Out of French Open

Roddick is out of The French Open at the hands of Gael Monfils! I use an exclamation point because this excites me. I know that Andy Roddick is American, but I really love it when he loses. Mainly, because I can't wait to hear the new excuse he pulls out of his rear. He did not disappoint.

He lost because it was too dark. Of course he did. It couldn't possible be because Gael Monfils is better, and owned Roddick in straight sets. No! No one could ever be better than the Mighty Roddick! It must have been something else, case-in-point, "I couldn't see the ball!"

Andy Roddick is quite possibly the most arrogant athlete in the world with absolutely nothing to back it up. How many majors has he won? Oh right...the U.S. Open... in 2003. Go you. Why in the world do people still care about him? He's a whining punk! He always has been, and barring some miracle, always will be.

Let me demystify Andy Roddick: he is not a great tennis player, he's a great tennis server.

Celebration in Mouse Town

The Orlando Magic get it done in convincing fashion! For the first time since the 1994-1995 season, the Magic are headed to the NBA Championship series. It's Disneyland vs. Disney World in this season's sexy championship match-up.

Now, on to the difficult decision: who takes the series, and gets the ring? Although I do think that Los Angeles has the deeper, more talented team; after watching the Magic defy all odds twice (beating Boston and Cleveland), I can't help but think that this club will find a way to pull out the win.

If Howard can own the paint, and Turkoglu can sniper those threes, I think Orlando has a legitimate shot, and I will take them over the Lakers in seven.

Welcome to the Ump Show

At what point did umpires decide that they were the stars of the show? Last time I checked, I watch baseball to see baseball players; yet for some reason those goofy umpires (with their dramatic hooks, and perfectly choreographed spin moves) seem to be vying for the center stage spotlight.

Case-in-point, Todd Tichenor, the 32 year-old umpire of yesterdays Red Sox/Twins game decided to, quite theatrically, eject Ron Gardenhire, Mike Redmond, Terry Francona, and Jason Varitek all within the span of ten minutes.

Granted, I have no idea what was said to prompt each ejection; but four ejections stemming from separate arguments within a single inning? It looked to me like Tichenor had quite the itchy trigger finger. Coming up from the minor leagues (Triple-A Pacific Coast League), he was either nervous and attempting to maintain control by “laying down the law”, or he was showboating his authority in search of his fifteen minutes of fame. My gut leans me toward the latter.

Again, officials in all sports need to maintain order; but they need to do so while fading into the background. I don’t need to see a seven minute Broadway dance number every time a guy strikes out; and unless the benches clear and fists are flying, I most definitely don’t need to see the “ejection jig” four times in a single inning.
