Musically abstract with beats all over the place but a strong sense of melody throughout, definitely not your average indie record and all the more awesome for it. I’m sure everyone knows it from Roger Sanchez’s Another Chance but this is a top tune in its own right. I guess Toto are seen as being pretty uncool(?) but they’re actually awesome and have released loads of music. Well, I say so anyway and I’m sticking with it.

Treebound Story – Swimming In The Heart Of Jane

Treebound Story was Richard Hawley’s old band who had a few releases back in the mid to late ’80s. It’s all lovely Smiths-like stuff with pretty melodies and weaving guitar lines, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was Morrissey and Marr at the controls at many points.

Heart – Sing Child

Heart are totally wicked. They cranked out loads of great rock tunes in the 70s (this is one of them) and then went full on 80s hair rock in the following decade. A rarity at the time that they were fronted by two women, both incredibly talented performers and songwriters. Ann Wilson’s voice is incredible and Nancy is pretty shit hot on the old guitar too, apparently they do a lot of writing for movies and stuff now. If you’ve seen Almost Famous (and you really, really should if you haven’t) the songs for the fake band, Stillwater, are all written by the Wilson sisters.

Bomb the Bass – Winter In July

This tune popped into my head the other day after years of not hearing it. Taken from the second album from Bomb The Bass this was a pretty big hit at the time, if I remember correctly, but was a step away from the sample insanity that was Beat Dis. Awesome tune, always loved it. Someone’s also made a video with a load of dogs in snow to accompany it. How lovely.

Wicked Lester – Keep Me Waiting

70s rock from two guys who would go on to find mich more success in a different band. Anyone who’s a fan should recognise Gene Simmons’ vocals straight away and Paul Stanley is unmistakeable in the background. This is actually a great little tune, bit of a different style from what would eventually become Kiss but you can hear their sound in there.
