Frequently compared to The White Stripes, The Black Keys is a blues-rock duo from Akron, Ohio, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach & drummer Patrick Carney.

Loaded with imaginative raunchy electric blues sounds (incorporating elements of funk, soul & hard rock to avoid sounding repetitious), the band’s 1^st album, The Big Come Up, (released in 2002) quickly gained critical praise and recognition.

Their incendiary live performances (opening concerts for bands such as Pearl Jam, Beck or Radiohead) helped propel the Black Keys popularity.

NINE INCH NAILS

Founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor, its only official member, Nine Inch Nails (a.k.a. NIN) is a U.S. industrial rock group which has produced several highly influential records thoughout the 90's until very recently.

NIN's sound is a combination of meticulously-assembled layers of distorted guitar & electronic sounds on cathartic heavy metal rocking rythms, robotic techno beats or instrospective ballads.

Another trademark of NIN's musical style is related to the way Reznor's changes the dynamics within a song structure, switching from quiet to loud & back again with an abrupt stop at the end. Reznor's voice follows the same pattern alternatively whispering then screaming his tortured lyrics.

Among the different artists which were influenced by NIN, let's mention David Bowie whose Outside & Earthling albums (released in 1995 & 1997) were greatly influenced by Trent Reznor's musical characteristics. Another artist where Reznor played a major role at the early stage of his career is Marilyn Manson. Acting as a mentor & a producer, Reznor helped Manson's become the most controversial entertainers of the 90's with his 2nd album released in 1996 called Antichrist Superstar.

Queens of the Stone Age (also known as QOTSA) is a rock band based in Palm Desert, California.

Led by guitarist Josh Homme, QOTSA developed a style of heavy riff-oriented rock sound. Although they reject the term, their style is frequently described as stoner rock.
