GZA/GENIUS GZA: When it comes to thought provoking, street-bred raw lyricism, the Wu-Tang Clan’s fountain of wisdom, GZA takes his job very seriously. The way he crafts his double-edged rhyme flow mirrors the skill and precise technique of one who works with fine ceramics. GZA’s metaphoric and multi-layered lyrics are often touted by critics as his rap name implies; genius. MUJA MESSIAH:Thee Adventures Of A B-Boy D-Boy (Black Corners) The differences between mainstream and underground rap have always been a bit tenuous, as mainstream is often more political and message-based than it gets credit for, while underground hip-hop’s misogyny and regressive themes tend to get ignored. Muja Messiah shatters the implicit split between the two camps, deftly crafting a hip-hop masterpiece that combines indie’s nuance and honesty with mainstream’s swagger and charisma. Muja makes sure to differentiate himself from the area’s famed emo rap while continuing to rep his city hard (Messiah has the letters MPLS—spelled out in guns, swords, and dollar signs—tattooed on his neck). In lead single “Get Fresh,” he takes on those who are “backstabbin’ my city / like it’s all backpackin’ and hippies / like it ain’t crackin’ in my city.” With a winsome flow, Muja covers everything: cocaine deals and money-fetish materialism, progressive politics and introspective thoughts, dark reminiscences, well-spun punchlines. Formally carrying the name Nice Nice since 1999, guitarist Jason Buehler and percussionist Mark Shirazi have been playing music together for over ten years. Their intense rhythmic dialogue heard in their songs speaks volumes about the connection between the two as they layer runaway melodies and free-form noise into some of the most creative beat-based rock music you will ever hear. It’s not unrealistic to assume that you’ve never heard anything like it, as most everyone that’s ever witnessed their awe-inspiring live shows is left speechless, with nothing to compare it to. Most shocking is the fact that it’s largely improvisational and always live. No overdubs, no samples. Certainly not the first band to successfully trap virtuoso playing into loops that you can dance to, Nice Nice has definitely done so with the least amount of pretense, making it both intellectually stimulating and fun as hell to listen to. They say it, we believe it, and that settles it!

Drummer extraordinaire Dave King (The Bad Plus,Happy Apple) returns to Making Music to preview his weekend of shows at the Walker Art Center, King for Two Days. Our conversation will focus on his newest collaboration projects, Golden Valley Is Now, and The Dave King Trucking Company, which will premiere as part of the weekend’s music extravaganza March 12 & 13. Special live guest cameos expected…

Co-presented with the Walker Art Center.

If you’ve checked out Dosh, Andrew Bird, Fog, Fat Kid Wednesdays, Happy Apple, The James Buckley Trio, or about a dozen other local bands, chances are you’ve heard at least one member of local quasi-supergroup Alpha Consumer. Jeremy Ylvisaker and Michael Lewis have logged some serious miles this year in Andrew Bird’s backing band, and J.T. Bates is a drummer for several Twin Cities projects, but the trio’s first passion is this loud, cocksure rock band. – Jake Mohan
