Lee Holcomb - Retirement in Paradise

In the wise words of Walt Disney, "Some dream it. Some do it. Some do both".

Lee Holcomb, the former owner of Wholesale PVC Sign Manufacturer, the New Kit, is one of the lucky ones. His dream became his reality this year, after retiring from the signage industry after forty years.

In January 2021, Holcomb decided it was the right time to retire from manufacturing and pursue his passion of boating after four decades of dedication to the signage industry.

He sold his company to wholesale sign manufacturer, Peachtree City Foamcraft, finalizing the deal in late April 2021 and just like that, his dream was one step closer to reality.

The dream--to take his 38’ powerboat to the Bahamas and cruise an 800-mile chain of islands for six months and unwind.

Holcomb was excited, “After doing the same thing for so long, it will be really nice to just sick back and enjoy the sunset."

Fast forward 7 months. We are excited to announce that Lee has made it to the Bahamas!

Peachtree City Foamcraft Names Winners in Annual Monument Sign Design Contest

Schnecksville, PA – Peachtree City Foamcraft has released the names of the winning entries in their annual Monument Sign Design Contest. The design contest made its debut in 2016 and continues to grow. Michael Fetter, Sales Manager for Peachtree City Foamcraft couldn’t be happier. "There were nearly 4 dozen entries this year. Several beautiful monument sign designs to choose from, the competition was tough, but at the end the decision was unanimous and three designs rose to the top to take home a prize".

The Crawford, a custom monument sign designed by FASTSIGNS Norcross, Georgia took home the Grand Prize of $1,000.00. The unique design incorporated a variety of dimensional components including a unique architectural sign base design, faux stone elements, raised dimensional letters and metal.

If you search for the term "sign shops" on Google, your search will yield approximately 202 million results. The number one ranked website isn't even a sign shop; rather, it is a plug-in with a forum. So how did they get to the top? A good design, lots of links, tons of text, cool pictures... try again - they got to the top because of three magic letters, S-E-O.
SEO is also known as search engine optimization, the methods necessary to take your website from page 173,000 to page 1 on Google.
If you are new to the world-wide-web and looking to promote your shop to the masses, or just wondering what the first step is in taking over the web like the plug-in site, which tops Google's organic search, ranking above more than 202 million websites. This post is for you.
Let's take it from the top, this is SEO 101 for Sign Shops - Part 1.

Create a Website

You can't compete, if you aren't in the game. Surprisingly, as the marketing coordinator for wholesale monument sign manufacturer, Peachtree City Foamcraft, I continue to speak to sign shop owners daily who do not have a website -- and are desperate to improve their monument sign sales. A web presence is just as important as having a business card, if not more important. It establishes validity, builds brand awareness and allows clients to see your work. You can sell yourself 24 hours a day/7 days a week on your website.

Quality Content - Tell Us About Your Sign Shop

Imagine you have just hired a team of sales people to go out and sell your product. How should they sell your sign company to businesses? What products do you offer? What is the process? What are the benefits? What kind of payments do you accept? Your website should answer all of these questions in order to effectively meet the quality content requirement. How to organize the content is a topic for another day - the first step is creating content that is quality, that explains who you are, what you do, the benefits, the process and how to get a hold of you. Focus on educating clients and giving them valuable information.

Call to Action

Tell me what you want me to do. In order to rank, you need to have visitors. New visitors, return visitors, links to your website -- they all count. BUT, you won't have any visitors if your site fails to have a purpose. Tell the visitors what they need to do. In example, "fill out this form to schedule a free consultation", "complete this questionnaire for an estimate", or call 555-SIGN for a free estimate. Make sure the method is consistent through out your website.

Text is more important than photos as far as SEO is concerned initially, however, in order to reduce your bounce rate (customers leaving your site quickly) - you will need to keep their attention, encourage them to visit you again, to recommend you to a friend. Photo Galleries are a great way to show off your skills and establish a connection with visitors. Now that you have a basic website, which explains who you are, what you do and points your potential client in the right direction... it is time to talk about how to optimize your site and improve your rankings.

What's In A Name: SEGD?

SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Design) has changed its name but not its shortened moniker. Still known as SEGD, the longhand title is now the Society for Experimental Graphic Design. The move from environmental to experimental recognizes "the transformation our design discipline has been undergoing for years" according to SEGD Preisdent, Amy Lukas.

The term "environmental" has taken on a new meaning for the building industry and the signage industry alike in recent years. The new meaning played a part in the organization's decision to change its name. In addition to the name change, leaders say they have a new mission and focus which is further defined by their new name.

New Faces: 2014 ISA Board

The International Sign Association has named its Board of Directors for 2014, comprised of professionals across the industry representing national and local sign companies, suppliers and distributors.

“Our Board of Directors has vast experience in all facets of the sign industry,” said Lori Anderson, ISA president and CEO. “These individuals will help lead ISA in better serving our members and staying abreast of issues that sign professionals face every day. They also will help our industry grow stronger as we work on initiatives that benefit us all.”

Chad Jones, president of Southwest Signs in San Antonio, Texas, will serve as Chairman of the Board. Other executive committee members are Vice Chairman Christopher Flejtuch, president of Quality Quick Signs in Depew, N.Y.; and Secretary/Treasurer Robert Mattatall, president of Mattatall Signs Ltd. in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Harry Niese, president of Mid-West Sign Supply in Chicago, is past chair.

Christina Galgan, portfolio strategy, exterior branding manager for Walgreens in Deerfield, Ill., and Rick Scrimger, president of Roland DGA Corp. in Irvine, Calif., serve as at large/unrestricted board members.

As part of ISA’s reorganization, each of the three main divisions—Suppliers/Distributors, Affiliated Associations and Direct Members—will be represented on the Board of Directors. The reorganization streamlined the relationship between ISA and its Affiliated Associations. Local sign companies join at the Affiliated Association level and receive automatic ISA membership. National sign companies join ISA directly and are represented by the Direct Member Council.
