Not only are the people who live here unique, but the exhibits and interests they put on display are too. These are some of the most interesting displays you'll see.

Father Lacombe Chapel Provincial Historic Site

If you’re curious about life in the 1860s, you're not alone! Visiting this historical site will make you wonder no more! Guides will walk you through the chapel, crypt, grotto, and cemetery and explain to you what life was like through reenactment.

Offering ghost tours in the fall and interpretive guide-led tours during the rest of the year, you can see everything from Alberta's oldest surviving building to how people ate and lived a hundred and fifty years ago.

Vegreville Egg

This giant sculpture of an egg catches many people off guard when they visit St. Albert. Decorated like a Ukrainian-style easter egg, this sculpture is monumental and comes in many orange, gold, black, and silver tones. Every ridge of detail builds it up to 31 ft long and makes it the second-longest in the world.

This egg was built because of the high Ukrainian population in the area, as an homage to the country they left behind and the life they're building here. Although it's a great reason to create a sculpture, many are stunned just to be encountering a giant egg on an otherwise perfectly normal patch of St. Albert real estate.

St Albert Grain Elevator Park

Grain elevators have been a huge part of Alberta’s history in farming and agriculture. This park offers several on display where you can look at these interesting buildings and learn the history behind them.

The Grain Elevator Park is a quirky but fun exhibit where you can also buy food and make the most out of your visit. If you're not sure what to expect, you'll be pleasantly surprised! Those who work here don't take it too seriously and understand the strange fun of this park.

Little White School

If you've ever been curious about what the little schoolhouses classes used to be taught in were like: visit the St. Albert Little White School! Named after its tiny size and white color, this school that once taught local children is only two rooms large and trained kids of all ages.

Since 1948 it’s been a local landmark that’s been a popular hotspot for visitors who want to see what life was like in the early 1900s and late 1800s. Pictures of the school, and the students who used to go there, are framed inside so that you can see the people who used to walk this hall.

St. Albert may be a quiet city that many don't expect to be surprised by, but each of its exhibits offers something fresh and exciting. From giant eggs to extremely small schoolhouses, if you want the quirks and fun of a tiny city with a population that's a little more sizable, St. Albert has you covered. Just make sure that while you're here, you let yourself cut loose and have fun!

Mauie Floreshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05036090431224523538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8511957019407412747.post-45814434768731298732021-03-17T15:51:00.001+08:002021-03-17T15:51:46.706+08:00A Pinoy Expat's Tip Before Buying a Home

When my sister-in-law's family migrated to the UK, they dreamt of a good life that they believed they can't afford to give their children then. Good life for them meant having money for retirement, work-life balance to spend time with each other, and of course having their own house to call their own. England has been good that in half a decade they got everything including a place that they now call home.

Their newfound friends were very helpful when they made the decision to buy their home. According to their elderly neighbours, it was a good time to buy a house since the interest rates are better (below 3%) compared to when they had their home loan years before (which hovered around 17%). That's already a good deal as during that period, home loan rates in the Philippines were about 6 to 11% which they couldn't afford then. With the wheels set in motion, they decided to sort their finances to see if they can afford to buy, not just lease, a roof above their heads.

The first thing they did was to do some research as to how much they can get from the bank. The internet provided them with some useful online calculators to estimate how much the banks would be willing to finance and repay their mortgage.

Payment Calculator. This calculator shows how much the actual payment are going to be based on how much the property is worth and how long it's going to take based on how much their deposit is going to be. It's best to go over their shortlisted properties and see which ones fit the range of their allowed loanable amount and work from there.

What Mortgage Can I Afford Calculator. This calculator shows the range of how much the banks would lend at a specific current income stream and how much damage the current financial liabilities will affect the total loanable amount. Just input the current income, outstanding debts, and downpayment and they get the upper and lower limits of our possible loanable amount.

Meanwhile, in Australia where my sister is, the state and federal government has put incentives in place to entice its residents to buy their own property through homeowners grants and other concessions. Properties in suburbs near regional areas are being developed and made more affordable to allow people to actually want to live there. There are also deals made by loan providers that allow for low or even no deposit loans with the help of a guarantor, which is usually a family member whose home equity will be used to cover the down payment so they don't pay additional Lender's Mortgage Insurance (LMI).

Online mortgage calculators like these are reality checkpoints if their finances are in line with their objective of buying property. All you need is honesty in filling out the forms with actual amounts to make the most out of it. From using these online mortgage calculators, users can see if their finances needed more improvement in terms of saving up for a bigger deposit or if they have to pay off some of their personal loans first before getting a dream home.

Mauie Floreshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05036090431224523538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8511957019407412747.post-57776759965176365792019-03-19T13:59:00.002+08:002019-03-19T13:59:48.651+08:00Take an Extreme Adventure or Just Chill at Laresio Lakeside Resort and SpaThe last weekend of February had us driving to UPLB to fetch Ralph who went on an overnight debate competition. Since February 25 was declared as an official holiday, we thought that it would be the best time to spend the night at a resort in Los Baños. It was a last minute decision so I failed to reserve us a room at the Makiling Onsen Spa. Thankfully, Laresio Lakeside Resort and Spa was just a few hundred meters and a phone call away.
It was actually my husband first discovered Laresio Lakeside Resort and Spa. He saw a viral post on Facebook about it and tagged me. I didn't realize that it was also located in Los Baños until our car drove past its signage along the highway. Luck was on our side when I booked because there were still a few rooms available. As the night passed, we saw guests coming and checking in the rooms beside ours.
Dinner at Tavern, Laresio’s in-house resto

Laresio management actually allows bringing in of food and drinks. But since we found that their in-house restaurant, Tavern, sold affordable food and snacks, we did not go out to the neighboring stores anymore. All of the food items that we ordered were already good for 4. The taste of the food was ok.
Hot Spring Swimming at Night

One of the swimming pools in the resort is a hot spring pool. My son really craved for an onsen experience so the hot spring pool was a welcome consolation that night. We had the pool all to ourselves probably because only a few brave souls dare to take a dip in the hot pool. LOL!
After about half an hour in the hot spring, we transferred to the Pool Park for a cool dip. Most of the guests were there because there was a movie being shown. I learned that they show movies every night at the Pool Park. In fact, Pitch Perfect was still on even when we went inside our rooms at midnight.

We woke up early the following day determined to try all the extreme water activities by the lake. But of course, that would require lots of energy. So, goodbye keto muna, haha! We all had silog for breakfast.

I was a bit challenged after that and thought that I could jump off the 10-foot diving board. Mukha lang siyang madali and I commend those who really had no qualms jumping off the cliff. I stayed up there for almost 30 minutes until I decided to jump into the water through the Vine Swing instead. Sorry, no video of me doing that, haha!
Balsa Rafting was supposed to be part of our package but we were not able to avail it because we were only 4 in our group. Since we were checking out early, we just decided to Kayak instead of waiting for other guests to join us in our balsa ride.

The Verdict

Friends find the Php 1500/head fee that we paid for the Small Group Overnight Package a bit expensive. For me and my husband, it was all worth it for a couple of reasons:

The price actually allowed us to stay and swim in the pools from 6 am to 6 pm the following day. It just so happened that we arrived at 4 pm and checked out at 11 am because we needed to visit a relative. Room stay is still 2 pm and 12 noon the following day, and the Extreme Playground is open only from 7 am to 6 pm.

There is no corkage for food so guests can bring in food if they find the menu at Tavern on the pricey side.

Everywhere we went inside the resort is clean, especially our room.

Staff members were always polite and accommodating. The only trouble we had was that it took a while before they were able to bring us fresh towels.

Will we come back? Yes, definitely. In fact, the husband recommended Laresio for their department's outing. Probably next time, we'll go back as a bigger group for bigger discounts and more fun at the Extreme Playground.

What is glamping, by the way?

An Urban Dictionary contribution explains the term glamping as a "shorthand for glamourous camping." Meanwhile, Merriam and Webster defines glamping as an "outdoor camping with amenities and comforts (such as beds, electricity, and access to indoor plumbing) not usually used when camping."

Simplehan lang natin... For me, it's experiencing the outdoors more comfortably. And as first-time campers/glampers, we were happy that we chose to experience it at Casa Antonio Glamping in Calatagan, Batangas.

Batangas glamping site 2-3 hours away from Manila

Casa Antonio is a beachfront glamp camp located at Apacible Street, Calatagan, Batangas. Depending on the traffic, it would normally take a 2-3 hour drive from Manila. From Tagaytay City, it only took us an hour to reach the campsite.

Casa Antonio is somehow not easy to find if you don't set your Waze or Google Maps driving to the place. The property where the camp is located doesn't have a huge signage. It only has a wire fence surrounding it and a wire gate with a yellow sign that says, GLAMPING.

Good thing that I was in constant contact with Tom, who leads the camp staff that day, and he gave specific instructions on how to find the campsite entrance. As their Facebook page mentions, the place "is still and will be Calatagan's best kept secret even during peak season." So alam na why they don't have a huge signage by the highway.

Casa Antonio Glamp Camp Packages

Since it was the Undas long weekend, the boys and I decided that we would book ourselves for 2 nights at the camp. That would give us enough time to bum around and just enjoy being away from the concrete jungle of Metro Manila.

For those two nights, we availed the Eco Rehab (Php 2,800 per person) and Getaway Glamp (Php 1,800 per head) packages. By combining the two packages, we were able to cover our meals from dinner on our first night to breakfast on our 3rd day.

Casa Antonio Glamping Tents and Glamp Huts

We were able to experience sleeping in a tent and in a hut during our 2-night stay at Casa Antonio Glamp Camp.

We were assigned to a big camping tent on our first night. It had 2 double-sized mattresses and 3 pillows. There was still huge room inside the tent for our belongings. A tent of the same size a few meters away from us had 8 people in it so it was really roomy.

The location of our tent was well-lighted so there was really no need to use the small rechargeable lamp that I brought even when we were inside the tent. Also, I availed of the Php 200 electric fan add-on which made the hot afternoon more comfortable.

On our 2nd night, we were offered to transfer to the nearby glamp hut since it was already available. It's made of bamboo and sawali and was elevated. It also had 2 double-sized mattresses but can still fit in one more.

We borrowed the mat that we had the night before and placed it in front of our hut. Then we lay down while chitchatting with each other watching the stars. I asked if I can have hot water from the kitchen because I had 3-in-1 coffee with me but they offered kapeng barako! Haay, what a perfect night! Super enjoyed it! I was really able to relax and just take it slow.

The only downside to this is that we can't padlock the "door" of the hut unlike the zippered entrance of the camping tent. So we had to bring our valuables when we left for the beachfront in the morning. And we took turns in the shower so somebody will be left in the hut.

No need to cook. Just enjoy the camp!

Casa Antonio's allows bringing in of food and drinks to the camp site at no additional cost. However, since we wanted to enjoy our first-time glamp experience, we opted to avail of the packages with meals.

Lunch and dinner meals had grilled/fried chicken/pork, fried/grilled fish, soup, and rice. For breakfast we had rice, longganisa, fried egg, gourmet tuyo, and kapeng barako. Food was not outstanding but still ok. Servings were big! We were only 3 and they always served 4 cups of rice. So yeah, keto off muna kaming lahat. LOL!

Day 1 Dinner

Each hut had an assigned picnic table so our meals were always served there. We also asked them to serve us soda or juice with our meals. We brought 1.5 L bottles of cola and juice with us and they were kept cool inside the camp site's refrigerator in the kitchen.

Camping Activities at Casa Antonio

Bonfire

On our first night, we asked our assigned butler, Cardo, to set up our bonfire. I availed of this add-on (200 pesos) when I booked and we shopped at S&R Nuvali for marshmallows, sausages, beers, chips, and the long smores bonfire sticks (75 pesos only for 4 pcs. at S&R!). Earlier, I also asked Cardo to buy us tube ice for our cooler so the beers that we had were ice-cold by the time we had our bonfire.
The boat ride from the campsite took around 15 minutes and it was already low tide when we arrived. We were still able to swim pero sobrang babaw nga lang. The current was also strong so we really couldn't sit or squat on the water. The boat rental was good for an hour (excluding travel time) and we went back to the campsite after.
Sungka, Tambay, and Muni-muni Time

I really wanted some downtime for me and the boys that's we we booked this glamping trip. What's good in staying in tents and huts is that you'll be forced to not sleep in and go around. Syempre walang aircon, LOL!

The moment we arrived at our tent, Cardo lent us a sungka. I think the last time I played it was when I was still in grade school so I had to ask my friends in Facebook how to play it.

The Verdict

Casa Antonio Glamp Camp is not for the fussy traveller. Before you book your stay, make sure that you understand that you'll be getting what you pay for. What you see in social media and on their very own Facebook page is what you'll really see on site.

Before I booked, I got to check other glamp camps in Batangas and Casa Antonio had the lowest rates. Sure, they had airbeds and another one even had air conditioning which totally defeats the purpose of camping, right? I mean, gusto ko ng convenient pero rugged pa rin because that's what camping trips should be.

It is also important to note that there are a lot of dogs roaming around the campsite. They are pets and they don't chase and bite. Because of this, they also allow guests to bring their own pets.

In all socal media posts and blog reviews, one thing always stood out - the attitude of the staff! Everyone is friendly and would really go out of their way to assist you even when they're not assigned to you. What's also impressive is that they're working students who work on the site to be able to support their studies.

Our first glamping experience was made memorable in Casa Antonio Glamp Camp. Thanks to the staff who were always there to assist us in everything that we need.

Casa Antonio Glamp Camp is located at 143 Apacible St., Calatagan, Batangas. The site is easily found in Google Maps or Waze so you'll not have so much trouble driving to the place. I’ve just read the news on 2018 Philippine holidays and I immediately scanned for long weekends where we can spend family time somewhere we’ve never been before.

As usual, the long weekends are centered on the major holidays I often refer to as SUP: Semana Santa (Holy Week), Undas (Halloween), and Pasko (Christmas). Based on the published Philippine holidays 2018, and assuming no one goes to school or work on a Saturday or Sunday, I have four days and three nights off to plan our trips and activities.

March 29 to 01 April Holy Week (Semana Santa). Lent is from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. Visit churches or cool off at fab beaches.

November 01 to 04 (Undas). From Thursday (1st of November) to Sunday (4th of November) you get to spend time with the departed or catch up with relatives.

December 22 to 25 (Pasko). From buying gifts on Saturday (22nd December) to spending Christmas with the family on Tuesday (25th December), what’s not to like?

But then, if you’d rather plan your trips on less crowded dates, there are long weekends that allow for three days and two nights of vacay bliss. Look closer at the 2018 Philippine holidays and see if these dates fit your schedule, again assuming no work on Saturdays or Sundays.

February 16 to 18 (Chinese New Year is on the 16th)

April 07 to 09 (Day of Valor is on the 9th)

November 30 to December 01 (Bonifacio Day is on the 30th)

December 29 to 31 (Rizal day 30th to New Year’s Eve 31st of January)

Backpacking families like mine love these long weekends in the Philippine holidays 2018 because it allows us to explore places where can share experiences and make memories for a lifetime.

To complete the list, here are the remaining 2018 Philippine holidays effective nationwide:

January 01 (Monday) New Year

February 25 (Sunday) EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary**

May 01 (Tuesday) Labor day

June 12 (Tuesday) Independence day

August 21 (Tuesday) Ninoy Aquino day**

August 27 (Monday) National Heroes day

** These are special non-working holidays.
All opinions are mine.

My family travels a lot, especially on school breaks. That's the only time that we get to enjoy each other's company because we're all busy on regular days. I'm sure you know that traveling costs a lot of money, especially when it's for a trip outside the country. Plus, we're always multiplying all our travel expenses by three.

So we save as much as we can months before our trips just to make it possible. My husband saves a part of his daily allowance to add to our travel fund. I, meanwhile, try to squeeze in more paid tasks as I can. And of course, collectively, we save lots of money by using shopping coupons, such as those in Groupon Coupons.

Starting with just five Hornbill species when the park opened in 1971, Jurong Bird Park today is home to the largest collection of Southeast Asian Hornbills in the world. Of the 18 Hornbill species in the park, 11 are native to Southeast Asia.

Dr Cheng Wen-Haur, Deputy CEO and Chief Life Sciences Officer, Wildlife Reserves Singapore said, “We have chosen the Hornbill as Jurong Bird Park’s animal icon as we think this striking bird will be a relatable ambassador for all threatened bird species that need our help and protection. We have great success in Singapore where we have helped to reintroduce the oriental pied hornbill. There are other species such as the Helmeted Hornbill that are being hunted relentlessly and urgently need our help.”

Jurong Bird Park has long been actively involved in hornbill conservation efforts. Locally, Oriental Pied Hornbills were not seen for 140 years prior to 1994. In 2005, Jurong Bird Park entered a collaboration dedicated to the breeding and conserving of these birds and today, Singapore is home to a thriving population of Oriental Pied Hornbills. In 2013, three Oriental Pied Hornbill eggs rescued from Pulau Ubin were successfully incubated and hatched at the park’s Breeding & Research Centre. This marked the world’s first successful incubation and hatching of an Oriental Pied Hornbill.
Time and money saved mean more time for traveling. Don't you agree? It's funny because I do love traveling but I hate traffic jams. And you know how crazy the holiday traffic gets especially in the last weeks before Christmas. So if you're like me who would rather be frolicking in the sand on a sunny day at the beach rather than going around the mall shopping for Christmas gifts, Groupon Goods might be the shop for you.
The heart-shaped island is not just full of natural treasures like white sandy beaches, scenic diving sites, beneficial hot springs, and enchanting caves, it is also full of interesting cultural traditions.

Like any other island paradise in the country, visiting Marinduque is affordable. Its accommodation options cater to all kinds of tourists, from budget travelers and backpackers, to luxe honeymooners. If you’re going in Easter, when tourist numbers peak, it’s recommended to book hotels in advance through online booking sites like Traveloka to secure the room you want within budget.

Locals believe the origin of the island to be the result of a tragic romance. It is widely held that Marina, a daughter of a local chief, fell in love with Garduke, a prince from a neighboring kingdom. Their parents were opposed to their romance and they were sentenced to be beheaded. The two managed to elope, ending up in the sea where they died with their remains forming the island.

The island is also historic. Indeed, the name of the island is a corruption of the local name of the tallest point on the island, Mt. Marlanga (now Mt. Malindig), which the Spanish used to rename the island after they captured it in 1569.

It is also on the island that American soldiers first set camp before the Filipino-American War of 1899-1902. The Battle of Pulang Lupa, as the war is locally referred to, ended with the defeat of American soldiers. The island again featured in World War II when the locals put up a stiff resistance against the Japanese.
But it was a big deal for my boys. Since we were also celebrating my son's 16th birthday, we opted to make an impromptu trip to a beach resort just 3 hours away from our place. Funny actually, because it was only our first time to go to Real, Quezon.

I made a quick research and the Internet pointed me to blogs mentioning a couple of beach resorts that are known as surfing spots. I wanted a quiet time with the family so I thought of finding other beach resorts in the area. Luckily, I found La Juliana Beach Resort and the reviews of the place are good.
Thanks to Cebu Pacific's Piso Fare promo last October 2012, I was able to secure cheap airline tickets. For our three round trip tickets, I only paid Php 10, 400. We left for Changi International Airport Terminal 2 last May 19. Our 5:40 am flight left on time and we arrived on schedule.
Sabitang Laya is also one of the popular islands of the Caramoan Peninsula. This could be why there are already plenty of people by the time we arrived. Some of them even have tents set up and looked like they stayed there for the night.

The sand here is still powdery white like in Manlawi but there are large rock formations even on the water. We had photos taken while sitting on these rocks like this photo of my sister-in-law and her family.
That's all we did on our second day. From Jallores Homestay, it was just a short tricycle ride to the port. Our group of 16 had to be divided into 2 groups as only a maximum of 8 passengers are allowed in each boat. We paid each boat Php 2,000 for the whole day island hopping trip.
We were so busy with Rap's graduation and our daily tasks that I wasn't able to make an itinerary of sorts. In fact, Rap traveled with my sisters-in-law and their families two days ahead of me and Dadijun because we still had work to do. We finally left for Naga that Thursday night aboard the Isarog Lines SII sleeper bus.
Ours was a late afternoon flight so arrived in Cebu at past 7 in the evening. The quaint boutique hotel's ambiance was an refreshing sight from the 30-minute drive through the busy streets from the Mactan International Airport. I was invited to the launch of this new line which was held at Lock & Lock Lucky Chinatown Mall, Lock & Lock's newest flagship store. Below are just some of the products that I promised myself I would buy before we leave for our Singapore trip next year.

Read more after the jump...Mauie Floreshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05036090431224523538noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8511957019407412747.post-84576889401255744962012-10-23T12:24:00.004+08:002012-10-23T12:24:53.855+08:002013 Regular and Special Non-working Holidays in the PhilippinesMalacañang Palace, the seat of the Philippine national government, released the list of regular and special non-working holidays for 2013. I knew he meant something when he said that when I saw that we had to go up these steps to the temple, LOL! No choice but to force my heavy butt to get moving unless I want the boys to leave me at the parking area.
Since it was also our first time to visit the place, I was clueless on how to start planning our trip. All I knew were the tourist spots and landmarks that I learned from my history and social studies textbooks. It also didn't help that I don't speak or understand Cebuano so going around the city did not become an option. My Internet research brought me to Kuya Macky.
