The yearly Spirit of Entrepreneurship Event organised by the Innovation in Business Centre (IiBC) will take place on Thurs 30th Sept from 6pm-8.30pm at GMIT Castlebar.

From 6pm the general public are invited to come and view a showcase of IiBC client companies. This will enable those companies to showcase their offerings and will allow you to speak directly to these new start up companies.

Two successful entrepreneurs, Johnathon Ruane and Leonard Moran will speak about their experiences of setting up a business. Both will share their experiences of establishing and running a business, including the many challenges and lessons learned along the way.

Members of the public are invited to attend the event. Admission is free. All are welcome.Light refreshments will be provided from 6pm. Booking is advisable as places are limited.

Preparing & Presenting Press Releases – MOCC September Meeting

Thank you to those who came to our August MOCC Meeting held in the TF Royal. Considering it was a big holiday season there was still a good attendance for it.

The next meeting of the MOCC Club is scheduled to take place in GMIT Campus, Wednesday 1^st September at 11am where Lesley Emerson of PR West & Liam Horan of Sli Nua Communications will facilitate a discussion on the best ways to prepare and present press releases about your business.

There is no charge for attendance and meetings will last between one hour and 90minutes.

Apart from sharing knowledge from others involved in business in Mayo, the Open Coffee Club is proving an outstanding place to make valuable contacts.

All you have to do is turn up on the day. New venue for the MOCC August Meeting!

There was another excellent turn-out of over 20 people at July’s Mayo Open Coffee Club, held in the new location of the GMIT in Castlebar.

The meeting was facilitated by Tommy Morahan of Sli Nua Communications, and his discussion generated a great deal of discussion about how businesses can incorporate social media into their operations.

Apart from sharing knowledge from others involved in business in Mayo, the Open Coffee Club is proving an outstanding place to make valuable contacts.

There is no charge for attendance.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 4^th, in the Traveller’s Friend Hotel, Castlebar. This will be an informal get-together. All meetings start at 11am and last between one hour and 90 minutes.

The September meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1^st, when Lesley Emerson of PR West and Liam Horan of Sli Nua Communications will facilitate a discussion on the best ways to prepare and present press releases about your business.

Limerick Greenhouse Start Up Bootcamps

The Greenhouse Incubator in Limerick is organising a number of very valuable free startup boot-camp sessions in Limerick. The sessions will take place in Limerick once a week for 10 weeks and will last 3-hrs each. They will be a combination of live 2-way video format, live sessions, workshops and pitches.

We aim this at early stage start-ups and will deal with a wide variety of topics that start-ups will encounter. It’s also build around real world experience rather than theoretical data. Places are limited so it’s important that people register early.

June meeting of Mayo Open Coffee Club

The next meeting of the Mayo Open Coffee Club will take place on Wednesday, June 2^nd, in GMIT’s Castlebar campus.

MOCC is a business network run by businesspeople for businesspeople. The event is free of charge, and the aim is to let businesspeople make contacts, pitch their business, and get assistance on business issues and challenges.

All meetings start at 11am and last between one hour and 90 minutes. There will also be networking opportunities.

The meeting will also discuss plans to advance the Coffee Club over the next 12 months. The current organisers will invite input from existing or new members as to how the club should progress. The club has been a meeting-point for a large number of Mayo-based businesspeople over the past year.

Entrepreneur to address Mayo business network

“Creating opportunity in a downturn – Innovate or Die!” will be the theme of next week’s meeting of the Mayo Open Coffee Club (MOCC) – and the key speaker will be a Mayo man who has carved out a business niche in outer space.

Rory Casey is one of the founders and Managing Director of Fibrepulse, a Castlebar-based company involved in manufacturing fibre optic cables for, among other things, satellites. He will speak at the Wednesday, April 7th, meeting of MOCC in GMIT’s Castlebar campus.

Apart from the novelty of Fibrepulse’s product, their story is also one of hope for all businesses, as its latest phase of success came after the telecoms company reached a potentially disastrous crossroads in 2001.

The telecoms meltdown in 2001 hit Fibrepulse hard, but the turnaround came in December 2002, when Fibrepulse attended an Enterprise Ireland seminar focusing on opportunities in the space industry.

“We would not have even looked at the industry if it were not for the meltdown,” Rory says. The move into outer space paid immediate dividends, and by 2004, Fibrepulse had signed a General Space Technology Programme (GSTP) contract with the European Space Agency that involved partners in several European countries.

Motivator to talk to Mayo businesspeople

One of Ireland’s most dynamic business figures will be the guest speaker at next week’s meeting of the Mayo Open Coffee Club (MOCC).

Pearce Flannery is the founder and CEO of Pragmatica, a marketing and HR consultancy group whose training and motivational programmes are widely recognised as being among the most innovative in Irish industry today.

In 2006, he won the JCI / PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2006 award.

IT Sligo’s Enterprise & Innovation Week

IT Sligo’s Enterprise & Innovation Week is a week-long programme of seminars, workshops, events to promote innovation entrepreneurs and creativity (see attached schedule). The Enterprise & Innovation Week’s Programme will formally launch in the Innovation Centre, IT Sligo on Monday 22 February. The programme was developed in partnership with Sligo’s County Development Board, Enterprise Ireland and the Western Development Commission.

The Enterprise & Innovation Week will run from the 22^nd to the 25^th of February 2010, and will feature over 20 events, including a number of international high-profile presenters. Some of the key note speaker includes:

Danny McCoy, newly appointed Director General of the Irish Business & Employers Confederation (IBEC) will formally launch the week’s programme
Larry Farrell, leading US author and expert on entrepreneurship
Harry Grill, Corporate Partner, with global law firm K&L Gates, counsels clients on cross-border, strategic transactions and advises international businesses looking to establish a commercial presence in the United States.
Seán Gallagher, Founder and CEO at Smart Homes and a Dragon on RTE’s Dragon’s Den
Ian Brannigan, Development Executive with the Western Development Commission. Ian will be presenting the findings of the WDC’s recent report on the huge potential of the creative industry in the West of Ireland
