There are many questions out there on the Directv forums if you will have the free data streaming if would use your At&t phone as a hotspot to stream the Directvnow app on another device.
In short: Yes, but there are few requirements.

Getting the Directvnow app and subscription in combination with your At&t phone is a game changer. Directvnow won’t count towards your data allowance if you use the app on your At&t connected phone or tablet. However many of us just have a connected phone and we use these phones as hotspots to access data on our tablets and computers. Watching TV on a small phone screen might be OK but not really ideal. Watching it on a Tablet is definitely better. And watching DirectTVnow on the Apple TV is of course amazing.

The big question in all the Directv forums has been as follows. Would it be free data if I use the app on a different device while connected to an At&t Hotspot or Home Internet Service?

I was thinking in adding the home service to my remote cabin since I have great connection there. And with the $35 Directvnow I could have phone, Internet and Directvnow for just $55/month if I added it as an extra to my existing Mobile share plan. But my question still remained.

So I went on a Chat today with the Directvnow people to see what the answer is. Below follows the transcript of my chat which I have an image of on the bottom of this article.

Sarah T: Let me check on that for you. One moment.

Sarah T: Great news! It looks like it would be part of the data free TV if you used the hotspot of your phone to connect to the ipad!

You: Hmmm it is very conflicting since there are no clear answers on the forums:

Sarah T: Here is the information we have provided to us.

This comes directly from the information we have available to employees, so there isn’t a link, but here is the information copied: Requirements

Content must be streamed through the qualifying mobile app on a smartphone or tablet.
Eligible wireless: Requires active AT&T postpaid data service on eligible device. AT&T wireless usage subject to wireless service terms including those related to data speed.
Streaming may not work at reduced speed.
WHPI is not supported for streaming content from the DIRECTV DVR.
Mobile device OS versions must be iOS 9.0 or higher or Android OS 4.0 or higher.

Sarah T: Does that help answer your question?

You: Yes it does, so this is great news. I guess the app on the Apple TV connected to a Hotspot wouldn’t qualify?

Sarah T: Correct. It only applies to streaming on Tablets or Phones.

You: So I can use my iPad directTVnow app connected to an Hotspot on my AT&T phone to stream free data TV!

Conclusion

As you can see I have highlighted in Red what is really important.

It only counts if you use the Directvnow app on a tablet or smartphone (iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.0+).

Directly from your post paid (NOT PRE-PAID) At&t tablet or smartphone or other post paid devices like:
– Mobile Hotspots
– Mi-Fi devices
– Smartphones or tablets with enabled hotspot
– Postpaid Wireless Home Phone Internet (WHPI)

If you use your Apple TV connected to any of these streaming devices you won’t have free data since the app is not being used on a Tablet or Smartphone.

This chat with this information was said to be only internally and there is no link for it. But you can use this article and this chat to make your case if you losing data on your end which you shouldn’t.

Happy streaming with Directvnow! I know I will stream the ball drop on New Years eve.

Yeah that little window is so small. Did you wish you could have another person on that same Face Time call. While this is now possible with Houseparty.

Houseparty is available for iOS and Android devices and allows you see an equal sized screen for all participants. And if I say “All” I mean up to another 7 people you can share this video call with. So a total of 8 split screen. This app has been gaining popularity and has been developed by the makers of Meerkat the app for live broadcasting.

I just used Houseparty with my son who is in college for the first time and he is loving it and immediately will invite his friends. Join the Houseparty movement by downloading it for Android and iOS.

Since the launch of Windows 10 preview and now the official Windows 10, I and many other have a problem with the build in mail client Outlook showing the wrong email account in the account settings. I have tried many things to fix this. However these fixes were only temporary because the email listed went always back to one of aliases I hardly use. The good thing however, after doing some testing, that this is only a visual problem. Your real main Microsoft account you logged in with your computer is the one it is really sending from and receiving to. But now we have registry edit fix to solve the visual problem as well.

As mentioned above the wrong email alias showing in your Outlook mail client is only a visual problem since that in the background this email is the main Microsoft email you logged in with your Windows 10 device.

Steps to fix wrong Email Alias showing in Outlook on Windows 10.

Right click on the windows key and select “Run”

Type “regedit” and select “OK”

The Registry editor opens open. By clicking on the folders on the left side navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->ActiveSync->Partners->Probably your first folder there. When clicking on the folders in the Partner folder itself you can see on the right hand side a string called “Email” which shows you your wrong main alias. Right click on the this string and select. “Modify…” DO NOT modify the string below called “EmailAddress”. This string lists all your aliases you have attached to your account, you want to keep this the same.

Now type in the correct email address which is the same as the one you used to log in to your Windows 10 Device. Click “OK”

Close the registry editor and restart your computer.

After the restart just open the Outlook mail client and your correct Email address will be displayed for your main Microsoft account.

The Enterprise version of Windows 10 build 10240 needs to have official registration codes from the company. However many users have the Enterprise version running from their MSDN subscription and don’t have it. There has been a thread going on the Microsoft Answers forum and a user found a way to activate this Enterprise version using the Command Prompt(admin) application. The steps below worked for me perfectly.

Steps how to activate Windows 10 Enterprise 10240

Right click on the windows icon and select “Command Prompt (Admin)”

Copy and paste in the Command Prompt (just right click and select paste) the follow three items individually and hit enter after each entry

slmgr /ipk NPPR9-FWDCX-D2C8J-H872K-2YT43

slmgr /skms kms.xspace.in

slmgr /ato

Your Windows 10 Enterprise 10240 should be now activated.

WaterField SFBags just released their new Outback Solo bag for the Surface Pro 3. When you get a new computer or tablet it is always hard to find the right custom protection to carry your device around. WaterField SFBags is one of my favorite companies especially if you want to be a minimalist and and only carry the things you need for the day. Well, the Waterfield SFBags Outback Solo for the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is exactly that!

The Outback Solo from Waterfield SFBags for the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 really has a Outback feel to it. The outside of the Outback Solo is made from waxed canvas and the flap that covers three of the 4 compartments is made of premium leather. The flap has a magnetic closure that works great and gives you easy and quick access to all the three compartments of the bags. The Outback Solo was designed with minimalist in mind and the three compartments is all you need. The built of this bag is very durable. The stitching has the quality what you expect with canvas and leather. The added adjustable shoulder strap is made from brown webbing with premium leather attachment ends.

The main compartment is lined inside with neoprene to give you the ultimate protection for your Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with the Type Keyboard cover. The fit is snug in the beginning but over time the Surface Pro 3 slides in nicely. There is just one little but. If you use a pen loop on the side of your Surface to store your Surface Pro 3 pen, then you need to remove the pen before storing the device in the Outback Solo. You can fold over the loop itself nicely while storing the Surface Pro 3 in the Outback Solo. The pen can be stored easily in one of the smaller compartments. Another option is to move the the Pen loop to the bottom part of the type keyboard or the back of the top of your Surface Pro 3. In these two locations you still can store the Surface Pro 3 with the pen attached in the Outback Solo.

The two smaller compartments are perfectly sized for the essentials you need to bring along for the day. The larger of the two pockets is ideal to store your charger for the Surface Pro 3 and even allows for some extra cables if you want to. For example and Micro USB cable to attach to the Surface Pro 3 charger to charge your phone or a small ethernet/3 USB 3.0 hub. The smallest compartment is ideal for either you phone or your travel mouse. One side of the inside of the smaller compartment has a soft fleece like liner that will protect the screen of your phone. The size of this pockets is large enough for my Nokia Lumia 1520. There is a small little loop between the bottom of the two outside compartments that allows you clip on on a bike safety light.

The adjustable shoulder strap is optional. The strong rock climbing style brown webbing has double snap button premium leather ends that feed through the premium leather flap. Mine arrived with the shoulder strap already attached but I changed the orientation of the strap so that the top of the strap adjustment would face away from my body. Slinging this stylish Outback Solo over your shoulder gives you a feel that you have the right bag for the right purpose. There is one more compartment that can quickly accessed. This is a folder like pocket that you can access on the back of the bag. The opening is where the premium leathes flap meets the waxed canvas.

I have always been a great fan of the STM bags. Besides being stylish, they are always very functional. This time I had the pleasures of using the STM Drifter medium backpack as our travel companion on our 10 day trip in Peru. And again this Drifter backpack from STM was really an amazing backpack to have around with us.

The STM Drifter bag has one great advantage compared to other popular hiking day packs. This backpack used for travelling and hiking actually has a special compartment for your laptop and tablet. Most of outdoor brands are great day packs but there is no secure or padded area to store any of your electronics. When travelling from hotel to hotel you don’t want to leave your high value computers at the front desk but you rather want to carry them. Good outdoor day packs come with a special rain cover and so does the STM Drifter. This was an add on that we used quite a bit to keep you stuff dry in the Drifter backpack. The light color interior of almost all STM bags let you find your belonging easy while they are stored in the bag. A lot of bags have dark interiors which makes it hard to find your stuff.

The top opening flap of the STM Drifter bag starts with a zipper on the back side of the back pack and zips open to the front. This allows you to open up the complete top and have full and easy access to all your belongings inside. Having the zipper start on the back side of the backpack also adds on an added security while wearing the backpack. On the inside of the main flap there is nice zippered see through pocket to store smaller items like charging cables, etc. In the main compartment you have easy access to a fleeced lined padded laptop compartment and a separate fleece lined tablet compartment that has two smaller business card sized pockets.. The front side of the main compartments has a thin divider which is great to store your print outs in a folder. After this the main compartments still has ton of space left for all your essentials. We even used it for an overnight trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu in Peru. The amount of space on the inside of the bag allows you pack enough for an overnight.

The outside of this bag will give you even more pockets. On the top of the main flap there is a zippered fleeced lined pocket, ideal for your phone or sunglasses. Inside this pocket there is even an section with two smaller pockets that allows you to organize you items securely. On the top of the front of the STM Drifter bag there is larger zippered compartment sized big enough to store your travel companion books. In the middle of the backpack there is another zippered pocket for your pen, pencils and more. And all the way on the bottom of the backpack there is a zippered pocket with the rain cover. On one side of the backpack there is elastic pocket to store your water bottle. A compression strap on the outside of this pocket allows you to secure the different size water bottles you use. Of course you store other items in this pocket as well. The other side of the Drifter backpack there is another side pocket, but this is a pocket with a zipper. You still can put another water bottle in there or store your pocket camera in this more securely. This pocket also comes with a compression strap.

The back of the backpack has comfortable foam padding with a cit out cross through the middle to allow ventilation. In the horizontal part of the cut out cross is another strap that allows you to slide the backpack over the handle of your roller suitcase. The shoulder straps are connected on the top with a thinner webbing to create more comfort in that area while the rest of the shoulder strap is padded. There is a height adjusted chest strap as well to secure the STM Drifter from bouncing around. I wish there was an option for a waist strap as well (with more pockets). There is also a quick carrying loop on the top of the backpack between the two shoulder straps.

In short, this STM Drifter Bag is full of great features that work very well. STM bags look great, are designed well and above all are very functional. The STM Drifter bag, with the easy access to lots of pockets with loads of space, is a great travel companion, school companion, and work companion.

Windows Phone has been great when it comes to using Office documents. However when it comes to PDF’s there is another story. Most of the times when you open an attached PDF on your phone it is saved within the two PDF app readers(Adobe reader and PDF Reader) available and you can’t really do anything with it besides reading. The only way to share these PDF’s is by forwarding the original email it was attached to, but you didn’t want to forward the whole email.

Microsoft just released their own app “Files” to manage files on your Windows Phone internal and SD storage. You have to see it as the File explorer in Windows. Microsoft. Whit the app “Files” you can now share any file within the app as an attachment in your email. The easiest way to drop the files in these folders is by connecting your Windows Phone to your PC and and use “Copy and Paste” on your PC since you can see your Windows Phone as a drive.

But when you are on the road and you are getting a PDF as an attachment in an email you will find out that for now you can’t “Tap and Hold” the pdf file in your email and select “save” because it is grayed out.

Opening the PDF file only allows you to read it in the PDF reader apps and is stored in their internal storage which you can’t see in your “Files” app. Your only option at this point is to forward the whole email (since you can’t edit the body of the forwarded email) with the attachment to someone else. But if you really want to save this file in your accessible storage and then attach it as a file (not a link) I have found just the way for you.

Steps how to download PDF email attachments on your Windows Phone 8.1 and attach these PDF’s in new emails

Before you start make sure you download the following two apps in the Windows Phone Store:
–Files (developed by Microsoft)
–PDF Reader (developed by Microsoft) If you use Adobe Reader it can cost you some money to upload and share files.

Step 1: Open pdf file from email in “PDF reader”

Step 2: In “PDF reader” tap the screen and then the 3 dots and select “Share”

Step 3: Sign in to your Onedrive account to create a link and share it your own email.

Step 4: Open your email and click the link and select “Save”. This will download it your “downloads” folder on your phone or sd card.

Step 5: Open “Files” and find your document in the “Downloads” folder

Step 6: Tap and hold the file and select “Rename”. You just have to remove some numbers in front of the file to get the original file name back.

For now this will be the a cumbersome way to get your Pdf files from emails stored independently on your Windows Phone 8.1 and allow you to send them as file attachments in new emails.

A few days ago I reported first that Kairos will bring Windows Phone support to their hybrid smart watch. Well we just found out that PH Technical labs, the maker of the popular funded Kickstarter Hot Watch, will bring Windows Phone support by the end of June with the help of Microsoft. The notification center in the developer preview of Windows Phone 8.1 is really bringing some value to developers of wearable’s. The added Bleutooth LE (Low Energy) functionality will allow wearable’s to communicate with Windows Phone 8.1. Now developers need just access to the notification center and develop within their apps how to manage the notifications you want to receive. But the Hot Watch will be able to do much more.

So what else can the Hot Watch do:
