More images that allegedly show Android 4.4 Kit Kat running on a Nexus 5 have leaked today via Italian Android blog TuttoAndroid. First the site posted images of KitKat’s Settings app, which shows a new “Tap & Pay” feature alongside new Location mode settings that include options for High accuracy, Battery saving, and Device sensors modes. The high accuracy mode uses a combination of GPS, WiFi and mobile networks, while the other two offer just WiFi or GPS. The location modes are new, and we’ve seen hints at the NFC payments feature in previous leaks that listed the option as simply “Payments”.

Moving onto the shots of KitKat, many line up with several other leaks we’ve seen in the past including the transparent status bar on the lockscreen. The images also show a camera icon on the lock screen that can be dragged to launch the camera app in addition to the ability to swipe left to launch the camera like in previous versions of Android. These shots seem to have slightly redesigned icons, and the phone icon looks a little suspect to say the least. The report also goes through a number of other improvements its noticed in Google Now, search and elsewhere throughout Android 4.4, but we’ll have to wait for official details before we know if we are really looking at the next version of Android.

“Find My iPhone” App Now Shows Driving Directions

The Find My iPhone app from Apple has just been given a very useful upgrade. The iOS 5.1 compatible app allows you to find your device if it has been stolen or lost and now, it also includes driving directions to the location of your device. For this to work you will need App Version 2.0.1 or later and iOS 6 or later. Also enabled within the app is the ability for Lost Mode, Play Sound and Erase buttons to be displayed separately from the primary view.

So, how does this app work ? Once you realize your iPhone is missing, simply use another iOS device to install the app and log in with your own Apple details.

“Find My iPhone will help you locate your missing device on a map, play a sound, display a message, remotely lock your device, or erase all the data on it.”

For iPhones or iPads running iOS 6 there is also Lost Mode. This will remotely lock the missing device with a pass code and, if required, display a phone number on the lock screen. If the phone is found, or has been stolen, you can only hope that it is by an honest person who will actually call the number to tell you. Jailbreak App Sent Picture of Thief with Stolen iPhone to Police

Official Apple app “Find My iPhone” has just been updated with several new features, including driving directions to the last known location of a stolen or missing device, although given Apple’s recent history with maps, we’re not sure how much value this actually has. While it certainly isn’t the best of apps, it does beat having your iPhone stolen with no hope of ever finding it again. However, the jailbreak team went one step further and are now giving themselves a large pat on the back. Jailbreak app “iGotYa” has just been used to successfully photograph a woman trying to unlock a stolen iPhone with the pass code.

The iPhone was stolen earlier in December from a nightclub in Brighton, Sussex police are quoted as saying that the app is “rather cool” because it not only snaps a photo but also maps the co-ordinates of the idevice and sends all of the information to the proper owner of the device.

At the moment, although police have the details and know where the photo was taken, thy have not located the woman in the photograph. They are urging anyone who knows her to call them with information, although they do say that they are not sure if she is the thief or not . Unfortunately, the app only works on jailbroken devices so those who have devices that are not or cannot be jailbroken yet, such as the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, will not be able to use it. Apps like this make a good case for jailbreaking, as you just cannot get the goodies through official channels.

How To Apply Good Privacy Settings On Your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch In iOS 6

In February, privacy issues were raised in iOS after a blogger discovered that apps such as Path, Twitter etc upload the address book to their servers.

Apple has added a host of new Privacy settings in iOS 6 that was released couple of weeks back, which should address some of those concerns. We take a look at How To Apply Good Privacy Settings On Your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch In iOS 6.

The new privacy settings are now accessible just below “Brightness & Wallpaper” in the Settings app.

The Privacy settings are broken down into the following sections:

Location Services
Contacts
Calendars
Reminders
Photos
Bluetooth Sharing
Twitter
Facebook

Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Photos:

Navigating to each section gives you the list of apps that have requested access to Contacts, Calendars, Reminders and Photos on your iOS device. You can enable or disable access via the On/Off toggle.

Location Services:

This section will display the list of apps that have requested your location. You can also find out which app has used location services recently or in the last 24 hours with the help of the location services icon.

A purple location services icon will appear next to an item that has recently used location services.
A gray location services icon will appear next to an item that has used your location within the last 24 hours.
An outlined location services icon will appear next to an item that is using a geofence (like the Reminders app).

Under Location services, you also have the option to enable or disable location services for System services such as Cell Network Search, Compass Calibration, Diagnostics & Usage, Genius for Apps etc. It may be prudent to disable Location services (Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services) for apps and system services, which you think can be used without tracking your location to conserve battery life. Bluetooth Sharing:

In this section, apps that have requested the ability to share data via Bluetooth will appear here. Apple says these apps can share data even when you’re not using them. But it is not clear what kind of apps will have the ability to share data via Bluetooth.

Twitter, Facebook:

These sections will display the list of apps that have requested access to your Twitter and Facebook account.

Limit Ad Tracking:

This new setting is not under Privacy settings, but is hidden in the About Section (Settings -> General -> About -> Advertising). In iOS 6, Apple has introduced a new advertising identifier, a non-permanent, non-personal device identifier that Apple says can be used by apps to give you more control over advertisers ability to use tracking methods. It’s an alternative for UDID. Apple had depreciated the ability of third party developers and ad networks to obtain the UUID (universally unique device identifiers), which was used to perform sophisticated tracking of devices (web cookies, unlike UUIDs, can’t track a specific computer, and can be deleted by the user).

You can now choose to limit ad tracking via Settings -> General -> About -> Advertising -> Limit Ad tracking, which will prevent apps from using the new advertising identifier to serve you targeted ads.

The new privacy settings should give users better visibility and control on what apps can access on your iOS device. If you blindly say “Yes” or “No” when an app requests for access to information, it may be a good idea to review the privacy settings every month and optimize the settings based on your usage.

As you’re reading this post, and most likely an ex-Android user, you will know that you are required to have a Google account, just as with an iPhone you need iTunes, when setting up your smartphone. Your Android phone should auto-sync your data to your Google account, but if you have disabled this option please run a manual sync before continuing.

Steps to Transfer phone contacts from Android to iPhone :

Go to the Settings App on the home screen
Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
Choose Add Account…
Select Microsoft Exchange
Enter your Google email address and password linked to your Android account in the appropriate field and choose Next
In the username field put your email address again and in the sever box put, m.google.com
Press next and wait while it verifies your information
Once it has completed the verification choose the data that you want synced with your iPhone out of Mail, Contacts, Calendars – or all of them
You will be asked whether you would like to delete the existing contacts on your phone. If you choose to delete all the contacts except for the ones you have just imported during this process will be wiped from your phone. Click Keep on My iPhone to prevent this from happening

You’re contacts will begin to import automatically unless you have opted out of the ‘push’ option. If so you can start a manual sync whenever you like!

To import your contacts via a vcard attachment please follow these steps :

On your Android phone install an SD card big enough to hold all of your contacts
Navigate to the contact menu
Select settings
Choose import/export
Choose export to SD card
Connect your SD card to your computer and import your contacts
You now want to email this file to yourself on an account that is also on your iPhone. If you haven’t set up a mail account on your iPhone yet take a few minutes to do this
Email the file
Open the email on your iPhone
The attachment containing your contacts will be right at the bottom of the message. Scroll down and tap it
Select the option to Add all Contacts

Your phone will now add the contacts you have included in the email .
There are several third-party apps that allow you to upload your contact information to a server and then re-access it on your new phone. Although these are usually completely safe going through Google or iTunes are the safer options and are the most highly recommended.
