Facebook Mobile Site Free for all Airtel Customers

Bharti Airtel has announced access for Facebook mobile page free for all its customers in India till 31st August 2010. Facebook could be accessed from the mobile browser via m.facebook.com.

Nokia announced Nokia Instant Community last week that offers Nokia handset owners to communicate with people around them. This is developed by the students in Nokia Research Center in Tampere , Finland and helps you to communicate with nearby people even without using bluetooth or any cellular network. All it needs is Wi-fi enabled phones.

What do you need to use Nokia Instant Community?

You don’t need internet connection on your phone or Bluetooth. You need Wi-Fi enabled handset to connect to other devices.

What are the handsets supported?

Right now it is tested on Nokia N900 which runs on MeeGo and also some on the Symbian devices.

What are the features of Nokia Instant Community?

Create your own profile and chat with the other people around your who uses Nokia Instant Community on their device.
Browse the users by name, community and by profiles such as Party, Public etc.
Share contents like Blogs, songs, poem, images and videos to a profile or to a person and also share the contents posted by others and comment on them.
If you come across the same person several times then an alert flashes on the screen.
Share files with a person or download the files from other’s mobile phone easily.

Will it work only on Nokia Phones?

This was developed to work on all the phones but the decision to use it on other devices like Android is up to Nokia.

Does it affect the phone’s battery life?

Even though it uses Wi-Fi this is designed such that it does not affect phone’s battery life.

When will this be available?

Samsung Wave and Galaxy S Now in India

Samsung recently launched two new handsets S8500 Wave and I9000 Galaxy S in India. The former runs on Bada OS and latter runs on Android 2.1 and are high-end handsets.

Bada is an open source mobile operating system developed by Samsung which means Ocean in Korean language. As per Samsung, this OS is like an ocean and has lot of openness in development. Samsung President and CEO (South West Asia) J. S. Shin quoted:

Yesterday Apple announced its latest upgrade to the iphone – iPhone 4 and we just received an email from the PR team of Vodafone India stating that Vodafone would soon start marketing iPhone 4 in India though there is no details of the exact pricing and release date.

As per our sources and prediction, iPhone 4 will be released sometime during Semptember 2010 in India. Also, we expect the price to hover somewhere around 35-40K INR for the entry level model (16 GB model).

Search iPhone and Android Apps with Google Mobile Search

Few months back Google revamped its Google search for mobile and now it includes app search results in its mobile browser. There are more than a million app in the Apple app store and more than 50k apps in Android market place and searching for a particular app is a tough job. So far there were only mobile apps which logs into an app store account to search and download an app.

Now mobile browser provides all these features. Go to Google.com from your mobile browser and search for the app and include “download”, “application” or “app” with the app name, click the link and it takes you directly to the app store. The search results includes Android Market for android phone and iPhone App Store when accessed via an iPhone. The search also shows the publisher, rating, price and number of reviews of the app.

This feature is available only in U.S for some of the android phones, other country support will be included soon. There is already a voice based search option in Android phone and iPhone to search an app which is easier than typing the name into a mobile phone browser. It would be nice if there is a download button on the search results for apps that are free.

It also shows the battery standby and talk time. In addition to it, there are tips to save battery life. This app starts automatically when the phone is switched on and runs on the background. Previously this was free of charge, now you need to pay 1 Euro and can download it from OVI store.

Green Explorer

This app does not do anything to your phone but gives green tips. Login using your Nokia account and select your destination and get tips based on the place or add your own green tips. Partnered by top organisations like WWF and UNESCO. This app can be downloaded from Nokia green explorer website or via greenexplorer.nokia.com from your mobile phone browser.

Do not stop your green contribution by only installing these apps also recycle your phone properly since all the phones are now made of recyclable materials.

Launch of Mobile Number Portability delayed again, expected by June 30

There is further delay in the introduction of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service in India and it is now expected to be implemented by June 30 2010. It is to be noted that it has already been delayed twice. Earlier, DoT (Department of Telecommunications) had announced that, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will be launched by September 20 in selected telecom circles. Then on Dec 31 2009 government again postponed the plan and decided to implement it all over India at one go by March 31 2010. Now the new date announced is June 30 2010.

Some operators are yet to test if their networks are ready to launch mobile number portability. The government has set a deadline of May 15 to complete the tests. Based on successful completion of the action taken DoT will finally decide the dates for MNP implementation.

MNP is already active in 45 countries including the Asian countries such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. In most of the countries it is free of cost. Lets see when and for what cost does Indians witness MNP service?

Just a while ago, Idea cellular announced the launch of a new Value Added Service for its customer in Andhra Pradesh telecom circle called ‘PreTones‘ using which Idea customers can listen to a host of content (ranging from live cricket action, jokes to tickle the funny bone, breaking news as it happens, astrology forecast, latest movie review and spicy Bollywood gossip) before they make any voice calls. The service is launched in partnership with Oorja Mobile Services.

In a nutshell, PreTones is a service that will help Idea Cellular customers to listen to their subscribed service before the calls gets connected.

Activation & Charges:

To activate PreTones, Idea customer need to call 55955 from their Idea mobile phone and follow the Interactive Voice Response (IVR). The service is available at a nominal price of Rs 1 per day.

Strange but true, a mobile service provider – Vodafone has launched its own social networking app that supports Twitter, linkedin, Facebook and Myspace for various mobile and computer operating systems. And we tried to test out the windows (PC) based Vodafone social networking client and here is a sneak peak of it:

As seen on the images above, the windows client seems to be very simple and easy to use, so we feel the app for mobiles must be as good as this (windows) app. Unfortunately, we could not test it out on our mobile right now, but stay tuned and we will soon post a review of the same after testing it out on various mobile operating systems.

Supported mobile OS as of now are – Android, BlackBerry, Symbian & iPhone and computer OS – Mac and Windows.

Sounds like Vodafone has taken this innovative step as this is a quite cheap and easy way for any brand to get exposure in the media by doing something out of the box!

Out take: The screen is only 256k TFT which could be better and the phone has only 70MB of inbuilt memory and no memory card with the bundle which is bit disappointing. Battery life could have been better but considering other 12MP phones which has same battery life, its acceptable. This phone is priced at 15000 INR . This is a great camera phone which is much cheaper than the one in 12MP category.
