OF WEBSITES AND RMT

A recent article on mmorpg.com about blizzards foray into RMT prompted me to speak my mind so dont expect me to hold back. here we go.

We should expect this kind of sensationalism from a site tied up in goldfarming, powerleveling, and viral marketing. hell they probably get a nickel for every click on that flash-infested shithole they call a site. and it is SOOOO easy. the wow fanbots are the easiest targets...right behind SWG vets. 673 comments and counting. this kind of "shock jock journalism" is no different to me than howard stern interviewing a much respected professional athlete and asking how many times a day he takes a shit. but never mind the lack of integrity.....let's look deeper...see what this really means.

Blizzard...the most profitable mmo dev house there is...stooping to the same tactics used by the korean grinders. SWG,auto assault, tabula rasa, age of conan, champions online, and if my tingling troll sense is correct star trek online soon be added to the list of failure. seems like the only new games that make it...are the Asian cash shop games. the big companies can no longer field a quality product due to either incompetence or greed.

And now the poster child for mmo success has fell victim to RMT. the industry is dying. the fans see it. apparently wood (a man whom i remind you makes his money from this industry)cannot. but one need but look to the front page of mmorpg.com to witness the TOLD.

For you see every "special offer" is from a asian RMT game...and the site...mind you a site dedicated to ONLINE games...is brought to you by a single player game.

Too long...dont read...WHY SO TOLD MMORPG.COM? WHY SO TOLD?

Oh and this message was brought to you by me. suske lightwind...former ranger...professional internet troll. and not a fucking single player game.

Quest for the 'Perfect' MMO Pt 2 - What is an MMO?

What is an MMO?

To begin to design what could become a "Perfect' game, what any company needs is a clear outlook as to what the Game they are about to design will be. Despite most MMOs currently being released being defined under the generic term 'MMORPG' (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), the only thing they all inherently share is the capacity to have many people online together at the same time. To be more exact, all these games should be called simply MMOG - because frankly, there's very little Role Playing going on.

So if we start at the premise that what we want to make is an RPG with MMO capability, we must really look at what makes a good RPG style game. From it's earliest incarnation, we know that an RPG must have several key elements:

It must follow a set of Rules.

It must allow some amount of personalized Customization.

It must have a persistent environment (Setting).

It must have a fairly linear progression of achievement.

It must be above all, FUN.

Top 5 MMO Popular Harmful Updates

People rejoice when the developers announce them. The developers are happy to implement them and the marketing folks are all too eager to advertise them as the new best thing in their MMO.

Yet, these updates were possibly never scheduled and/or part of the initial core mechanics of their game.

While most players applaud them, these updates can both signal a desperate move in a struggling MMO and ultimately place gameplay, immersion, the economy and other mechanisms in check.

I give you the top 5 updates which people ask for but don't really want in an MMORPG:

5. Double XP Periods

New players like them because they reach top level quickly. Old players like them because they level their alts faster; or in an MMO with a criticaly low population, they like them because it will shorten the time of lowbies to participate in top level content.

Results: In a player-run economy, low level items become rare; low level content is skipped or ignored in power-leveling practices; player burn-out of repeated grinding; limits personal achievement/satisfaction for reaching top level; developers invest mostly on high-end content; game main content begins at high level, more double xp introduced; rinse repeat.
