After a period at Stefano Giovannoni’s studio in Milan, Giovanni is taking his first steps in the designer’s profession. A short while ago he showed us this bottle opener featuring a pressure opening mechanism, an ingenious idea in this his “opus one”, that we were happy to develop and put into production.

Pinned to a wall of Stennett’s studio is an excerpt from the report of another study–it dryly notes how substances that ordinarily provoke nothing more than dizziness can, when aligned with the ideology and expectations of a particular individual, just as well lead to states of profound euphoria.
To Stennett this is a metaphor for the peculiar alchemy by which art transforms images and objects into devices for the expansion of consciousness.

I had a painting professor who used to walk into the studio, peer into a painting I was working on, rub his chin and say wryly “Stennett, have you found the solution?” At the time I wasn’t sure if he was just fucking with me. Fifteen years later I keep coming back to a related idea—that art-making is simply setting up a problem and finding a solution. Some problems are more compelling and some solutions are more effective. Did you have any moments like this where a light went on for you?

Michael Mann acts as if no other crime movie has ever been made

It occurs when Neil McCauley returns to his seaside home after the initial heist. He places his gun on the table and stares at the ocean, his back to the camera.
This scene is based explicitly on Alex Colville’s Pacific (1967)

As with Manhunter, Mann uses a blue filter, but the tone is noticeably different.

Neil McCauley is a key example of Mann’s thematic interest in the ageing white male in contemporary society, or what Thoret has identified as the “Aquarium Syndrome.”

Moreover, this scene has become iconic: a still from was used as the cover of F.X. Feeney’s book on Mann, a project that benefited from interviews with Mann and access to his personal archive.

Michael Mann tribute

This Mann tribute features some of the best scenes of Mann’s movies: Heat, Collateral and Miami Vice.

Collateral club scene

In the film’s DVD commentary, Michael Mann said that the general theme of Collateral is the clashing of ideals behind the two main characters. Vincent lives his life by improvisation and living in the moment.

On other occasions in Mann’s films windows function as a transparent boundary between the aquarium and the world beyond. When they occur we become aware of the characters’ loneliness, dissatisfaction with life or desire for transformation. Neil gazes at the Pacific in the scene from Heat we discussed earlier.

There is a similar moment in Miami Vice when the police visit a rich criminal at his lavish waterfront home. Sonny Crockett’s attention wanders away from the conversation for a few seconds. He stares through a large window out at the ocean. Is he bored? Is he thinking of the opportunities to shed his identity that working undercover will bring? Does Sonny envision Isabella, a woman without borders, before they have met?

In The Insider, Jeffrey Wigand gazes at the sea while trying to decide whether he should testify in Mississippi. A mandolin plays softly on the soundtrack. As he considers crossing the Rubicon, he is thoughtful, anxious, hesitant and, above all, uncertain as to what to do or how the future will unfold.

However this “piece” of news, which the paper El Periódico set this week as world sensation, goes back to José Manuel Susperregui, a Spanish university graduate, who published Espejo in this summer as a book “Sombras de la fotografía” (Shade of the photography) called.

El Periódico de Catalunya says this could be demonstrated by an alignment of these and similar Capa photos with current landscape photographs from the area around Espejo.
They also say they “proved” that the frequently doubted Capas photography was shot in Cerro Muriano, which is 50 kilometers away from Espejo.

This is a moody, sonorous and elegiac saga, famous for the first screen pairing of Robert De Niro, as master thief Neil McCauley, and Al Pacino, as LA cop Vincent Hanna. As a remake of his TV pilot L.A. Takedown, Heat is a mercurial exercise in cinematic form, shifting between the poles of elaborately choreographed action set-pieces to the long-lensed, tightly focused, intimate exchanges between couples. Personal dramas are played out in glass-walled houses, overlooking the sea or against the abstracted backdrops of flickering lights in cityscapes.

Three action sequences structure the film – an ambush, a street battle and a spectacular fight-to-the-death in the film’s climactic moments on an airplane runway. These experiments with the formal possibilities of the crime genre make Heat a high point in the cinema of Michael Mann.

Typography Tips

* Determine the image you want to project with your publication and choose fonts with personalities that will fit that image.
* Limit the number of typefaces you use in a publication. Many experts say to use a limit of two typefaces, but occasionally this will vary. Too many typefaces can create an unprofessional, jumbled image.
* Look at various publications for ideas about which typefaces work well together and the images they project.

* When using two typefaces, make sure they are very different. One typeface will probably be used for display type, such as headings, and the other for text. Strive for definite contrast between the two.
* When choosing only one typeface family, choose one with a lot of variations, so you will have some flexibility with your text design. The typeface Helvetica has many variations such as Helvetica Bold, Light, Regular, Condensed or Narrow, Outline, and Black.
* If you are unsure about which typeface to select, choose a common and reliable one such as Garamond, Palatino, Helvetica, Goudy, or Times Roman.
* When using a display type that has very strong characters (type that is bigger and bolder than regular type), use a typeface for text that looks more neutral. Very elaborate typefaces can be hard to read. Limit their use to only a few words and make sure the words are legible.
* All caps are harder to read than upper and lower case letters. Try to limit the use of all caps to two or three words. Some typefaces, such as Old English, are not designed to be used for all caps.
* Use bold and italic type for just a few words.
* Avoid setting large blocks of text in bold or italic type. Both styles are generally more difficult to read than regular type. A block of bold type tends to darken a page.

* Typeface weight will have a large impact on the color or darkness of your page. Thin lines will create a light and airy appearance, while thick lines will create a dark and heavy appearance. Weight can be very important to the image of a publication.
* Different typefaces take up different amounts of space. Some fonts are larger and take up more space per letter. This can greatly affect the length of a publication.
* The reader’s eye is attracted by white space. It gives the eye a rest and calls attention to what it surrounds.
* Break multi-line headings by phrase (where a spoken pause would occur). Place more white space above heading than below. This signals the reader that the heading goes with the text below it.
* Increase the spacing between lines or leading to create a lighter-looking page.
