We see a lot of shortening services around and there are many free tools that will help you create one on your domain.

The logic is simple, there is a database, there is a long url and an associated short url. When someone access the short url, the long url is fetched from the database and the user is redirected.

If you are on WordPress you wont need any of those. Inherently, every post can be queried from the database using its post ID. For instance, this link and this link point to the same post.

Your short urls for all your WordPress post will be in the following format:

yourdomain.com/?p=POST_ID

To find the POST_ID of a post, just go to your Posts > Edit Page in WordPress Admin and hover over the title of the post and check the link on the status bar. The last number that you see is the POST_ID of the corresponding post. See the image:

Now with this knowledge you could create your own Retweet Button’s and use the link in Twitter

My name is Kasia I am married to a problogger. Why is this important for you? Inspiration.

If you have ever thought about trying to write a blog instead of working for a company, read on. If you are currently blogging and some days wonder if you are doing the right thing, read on. Further, if you live in an up and coming nation like I do (Poland) and not London or New York you have some unique advantages.

If people do not understand your online efforts – this is actually a good thing

Kasia and Mark

I had never imagined I would marry a problogger, in fact a few years ago I had no idea what a blog was. When I told my parents I meet a problogger, they said that is nice Kasia, but what does he do for work? I replied ‘he writes’. My parents relied, ‘Oh he works for a newspaper’. I answered, ‘do people still read newspapers?’

I continued to explain to my family that he writes on his webpage about the things he love in his life. It is kind of an online diary and writes software. However at this juncture blogging is almost our sole source of income until our software is complete. They gave me a most unusual look.

This is the same look his family gives him mind you. Many of friends have tried to understand what a pro blogging is, but to no avail. I have just accepted that most people not fully understand blogging for a living. If they did, they would most likely be doing.

Important point about being a web entrepreneur: If you are blogging or doing anything entrepreneurial or even just online for a living many people will not understand you. Even some of your friends might start be slightly jealous of your success. If that happens, do not worry, it is actually a sign you are moving in the right direction.

Here is the reality – With blogging we are able to live a normal upper middle class life.

Advantages of being married to a problogger

Flexible work hours – We can work anytime during the day. My husband works in the morning and I prefer the afternoon. If I need to go shopping I just go.

More time with my family – It goes without saying family, not work is the most important thing. Having a website lets you be with your family. No commuting no nights and weekends at the office, no corporate politics to get your family down. Our daughter gets a lot of mental stimulation from both parents at a time when her brain is developing as both parents are home. We take her to places like the zoo and the aquarium while others are at the office. Our marriage is peaceful. I think many good marriages have stress from being apart so many hours a day.We are happy and grateful to God for all we have.

Vacation anytime – When we want to take a vacation we just go. When we need to get away we do it. Being in the center of Europe we can hop on a train and go anywhere. I would say my husband is a bit of a workaholic, but since we are together all day, I do not feel it. In fact, you can take a working vacation by just bringing your laptop with you. We have thought of going to Italy for the summer and we can work there if we rent a cheap flat.

There is nothing better than living the problogger lifestyle.

Which country is best to blog in?

My husband is an American from Boston. Many of our friends say, wow when are you moving to the United States. My reply is we prefer Poland. Again many people can not understand this. But if you are a problogger or married to one, it does not matter where you live.

In fact you might not want to live in Switzerland or London or high currency countries and cities. I think you want to live in a country like India or Eastern Europe. Countries that have all the good things this world can offer but at a fraction of the price of New York or London.

This way in a you take full advantage of the global economy. If you get paid in dollars when you monetizing your blog, it is better to live in an up and coming country, and not a country that you have to pay a premium for everything.

Examples that illustrate why it is better to blog where you are:

We were in Vienna and water at a Kiosk cost 4 Euro. When we are in Poland were we live then same water costs 50 cents. It is basically the same bottle of mineral water, maybe better.

In Boston where my husband is from a flat will cost 2,000 dollars to rent a month. The same flat in Poland, in the city center, even nicer is about 400 dollars. The same flat. The same goes with almost everything in terms of price. A Mango in Kerala is cheaper (and maybe better) than a mango in London. It is all about lifestyle.

Therefore, if you feel you do not have the same chance to be a problogger living in an up and coming country. Think again, you have a better chance. Plus you might have more fight and motivation in you.

People I know from Poland where I live say, you can not make money blogging. I just reply OK and walk away. I do not try to change other people’s mind’s too much. I know my husband does well.

Monetary benefits of blogging for a living

With blogging you can make as much money as you like. It is according to how creative (and patient) you are.

Save money with no childcare Save money with no commuting, we do not have a car in fact as we live in a major city

Save money on food with more home cooked meals.

Save time (which is money) because you do things when everyone is at work, no lines

Many other but I think you should find this out yourself.

Everyone’s break-even point will be different dependent on your expenses. We live in Poland so the cost is about 1/3 to 1/2 that of the USA. This is good news if you live in Eastern Europe or India for example as all you need to prosper is intellectual capital and the expenses are low in these counties. If you live in a high-priced country like the USA you will have a higher break even point.

Tips I have learned from my husband

No use in rehashing the scores of tips already on the web about blogging, so lets just look at the most important thing.

Focus on link worthy content not design. Design is important, but creating not just content but linkable content is the most important. Our designs are pretty basic, just a WordPress template. However, it is the content that attracts readers.

Do not worry if you do not make a lot of money. Choose the blog you love and the money will follow. If you love cricket, do not write about auto insurance, just to make money. Write something niche and focused that you do not mind writing about. I write about children and family in my blog Kasia, it is mostly in Polish so just use Google translate. My husband writes about economics and money. He showed me the way regarding blogging for a living and maybe I have inspired you a little.

He added some code into WordPress core that replaces all instances of Wordpress with WordPress. See the difference? Look again, the P in second one is capital. Well, that is the way it is meant to be.

So what is the big deal?

At first look, its so silly. And if it was executed well, no one would have even noticed that. But that’s not how things are now. Apparently, this code even checks the permalinks and breaks them. Its that bad. I am pretty sure Matt didn’t see any of it coming.

There is a flame war going on in the community. Here is what you need to know:

The code literally breaks things like URLs on some sites. For example, suppose you installed WordPress in a /Wordpress directory. That would cause all kinds of trouble with things like images.

This function is effectively changing what people write, and WordPress should not have editorial control over the content of anyone’s blog.

The code was committed to WordPress without a Trac ticket, so it wasn’t left open to community discussion beforehand.

Matt’s responses seem to dismiss the very community of people that help make WordPress what it is.

Checkout the above source if you need links to have a look at the flame war.

Fixing the Capital_P_Dangit()

Open up your functions.php in your theme folder and add the following lines anywhere in the php, i.e before the closing ?>

remove_filter( 'the_content', 'capital_P_dangit' );
remove_filter( 'the_title', 'capital_P_dangit' );
remove_filter( 'comment_text', 'capital_P_dangit' );

One of the attractions of the WordPress blogging platform is its ability to be very easily monetized through advertising. Whether you use pay-per-click advertising, affiliate marketing, or your own system, there are many ways you can generate revenue from a WordPress blog.

Fortunately, the flexibility of the WordPress platform allows for the use of plugins that can make the implementation and management of advertising campaigns simple, and effective. Here nine of the best WordPress ad managing plugins that can successfully generate revenue from your website.

1. Float Ad

This WordPress plugin floats at the top of your blog pages and stays in place as you scroll down the page, making it constantly visible. The extra exposure of your ad will attract more clicks and convert more sales.

2. All in One Adsense and YPN

All in One Adsense and YPN works with Google’s Adsense ads and those from the Yahoo Publisher Network (which is soon to cease serving ads) to insert advertisements on the fly. No matter how many posts your blog contains, this plugin can handle advertising in them all. This plugin allows you to set where your ads are located on the page and customize them with HTML and CSS coding.

3. WP125

By allowing for the automatic scheduling of advertising starting and ending times, WP125 introduces a high level of automation for bloggers. This plugin also counts clicks and allows you to store old ads so they can be re-enabled when necessary. WP125 supports the use of 125×125 advertisements only.

4. Shantz Wordpress Prefix Suffix

This plugin lets you insert text, HTML, and CSS code before and after each blog post or page, letting you customize your advertising using text messages, links or image based messaging to drive traffic to your advertising partners.

5. Advertising Manager

For a full advertising solution that rotates AdSense advertising, as well as those from other networks, look no further than Advertising Manager. This plugin enforces the compliance with the pay-per-click rules while ensuring that all your ad campaigns are getting good exposure. Installing this plugin is a breeze with its import function and management for all the top advertising networks is built in. You can use Advertising Manager to place ads inside posts and pages or you can use its widget to insert ads into your WordPress sidebar.

6. Sponsor Ad Management

Sites that sell paid sponsorships will find Sponsor Ad Management to be a lifesaver. This plugin tracks performance and exposure of each ad. In fact, this plugin enables an entire framework for setting up and managing a sponsor ad campaign on one blog or across multiple blogs. You can configure advertising banners to operate in pay-per-click, pay-per-impression, or even pay-per day advertising models. This plugin features scheduling and many other customizable options that can make your advertising program a success.

7. WP Tag Ads

WP Tag Ads takes an innovative approach toward blog advertising by actually using your tags to promote eBay items (you must enroll in the eBay partner program for this to work). The plugin scans the content of your post or page and attempts to display relevant advertising from eBay’s network. This is a great way to implement and eBay sales campaign.

8. ISIS Ad Management

Add drag and drop functionality to your advertising efforts. With ISIS Ad Management you can order and reorder advertisements with your mouse, making the organization and maintenance of your advertising campaign an easy task. This is a widget-based plugin, so you can only use this if you have a widgetized WordPress theme in use.

9. OmniAds

OmniAds brings unprecedented flexibility to your WordPress advertising campaign. This plugin may be too complicated for some newbies, but moderate to advanced webmasters will appreciate the ability they have to use complicated syntax-based rules to fine tune their ads. This plugin allows admins to inject PHP and HTML snippets to govern the appearance of ads, while the plugin itself has powerful features such as referrer-based ad display that can enhance the revenue stream for any blog.

I know you guys probably know that already. I haven’t upgraded most of my blogs yet just because I don’t want to screw up anything.

(If you are upgrading, you would want to make your Theme WP 3.0 compatible, right? Here is what you would need.)

But today morning I just tried upgrading one of my BuddyPress installations since a plugin that I was trying out works only with WordPress 3.0. Back-ed up the database (you should too!), checked if the backup was working and did the automatic upgrade. Everything went smooth, I checked the homepage and boom! It reported a 404.

First idea on my mind was to roll back to WordPress 3.0. So I googled for some WordPress downgrading plugins. Fortunately or Unfortunately there are none. Any plugin developers reading this? You might want to make the First WordPress Downgrade Plugin.

Heck, I can code, I understand WordPress, why not fix the issue? And here it is, the work around.

Create a BuddyPress Page Template for the Activity Stream

You can create a BuddyPress page template on the theme just like we do it for WordPress. Here is an example of how to create and use a WordPress page template. Do the same, but with the code for the Activity Stream page. In the default theme the code for Activity Steam can be found under
bp-default/activity/index.php.

Copy that code into the new page template. If you are using the default WordPress theme, here is the page template I created. Just upload this to the
bp-default/
theme folder and use it.

Create a Activty Stream Page

Make sure the template is in the root folder. Create a new page. Name in Activity (name doesn’t matter). From the right sidebar of the new page editor, under Page Attributes, choose template as “Activity Page”.

Publish the page.

Make the Activity Stream as Front Page

Go to Settings > Reading Settings. Choose a Static Page to show on the front page and choose the page that we just created. (I named it Activity, so its listed there as Activity).

If everything was all right we would just have to choose the Activity Stream that you can see there.

Remove the Activity Page Listing from the Header Navbar.

Depending on your theme, your Navigation Menu would list pages or maybe not. The default theme lists pages, and the Activity Page we just created would be listed there as well. We don’t need that, right?

Open up header.php and you will see

<?php wp_list_pages( 'title_li=&depth=1' . bp_dtheme_page_on_front() ); ?>

Normally, adding en exclude (&exclude=10,73) parameter to wp_list_pages would work, but for some reason it didn’t work for me. I think its because that page is used as the front page. The exclude was working for other pages like the contact page etc. So I decided to hard code the pages (I only had two thankfully).

<li<?php if ( bp_is_page( 'about' ) ) : ?> class="selected"<?php endif; ?>>
<a href="http://ebtimes.org/about/" title="About">About</a>
</li>

Edit the above code as per your requirement and replace the wp_list_pages in header.php or use an exclude page plugin.

That’s it. Hopefully WP team would fix the issue soon. If you enjoyed the tutorial or need any clarification, let me know.

When it comes to the success of your blog – there is no way that you can achieve success by simply writing articles, posting them and then going offline. Today’s world is marketing oriented. Even if you write good quality content, you must have the ability to market them well.

It is important that you let people know that your blog exists since you cannot expect people to visit your blog when they are not even aware of it. Letting people know about your blog and talk about your blog is called generating buzz and that is done by smart marketing and a little bit of diligence.

Here are a few tips to generate buzz:

Guest Post Like a Mad Man

Write on your blog first – then quickly type out a lot of quality articles that every webmaster would like to have on their blog. Once you are ready with content – go submit your article to different authority blogs. This way you will find that more and more people become aware of your blog and its existence. Always try to target high-traffic blogs that can send a lot of readers your way.

Guest posting is a super-effective way of generating buzz – and at the same time most under used. You must guest post a lot – that means even 20 blogs each month if possible.

Get on the Blogroll/Top Commenter List

All blogs have a blogroll and these days almost all bloggers are also using the top commenters plugin. These show the link of your blog in the sidebar of the blog. So when a visitor is browsing that site then he could see your link and click on it.

Even if they do not click, they will definitely read the name of your blog and that is also generating buzz in a way as they will recognize you sub-consciously.

Email other Bloggers

You can always email other bloggers telling them your name and the blog where you write. You can add that you would like to stay in touch with them. Most bloggers would never mind this and would actually be open to network with you.

Try to go for medium to low level bloggers – avoid the biggies of blogging world. Just make sure that your email does not look spammy.

Blogger Meets

Attend blogger meets in your city or make a bloggers circle where you can meet other bloggers in person and help in spreading publicity about you and your blog. Indiblogger recently organized blogger meets all over India.

Hope you found this post useful to generate buzz about your blog. Do you have any other way to generate buzz?

The Author, Anil Gupta writes about interesting topics that will help you create lots of buzz and money from your blog like promoting facebook page, making money writing reviews with sponsored-reviews and generating lots of Google backlinks for your blog.

The post on Resuming Local Bank Withdrawals to India had this:

Other posts had Movie Download Links, Twitter Tools Links and the like. Some links like the movie download link blend so well into the content.

Looks like someone is drawing out links without taking down any posts so the authors still do not know of this. Or maybe they are selling paid links. Totally in-appropriate.

Time to have a look PayPal!

Update: PayPal have just removed some links, but not all. For instance, the Movie Download link is still in place. Looks like they are selling paid links.

If you wish to write one, check out the guest-posting guidelines and details.

No matter how cogent or insightful your thoughts, if your blog post, article, or paper is filled with errors that should have been caught your readers will at least be distracted, and at worst, move on to someone with better writing. Your credibility will be diminished and success will be that much harder to achieve.

Those little details really do matter! And since proofreading involves more than finding errors, you’ll need to learn to make excellent word choices and employ solid sentence structure to maximize the clarity of what you are communicating.

Here are 10 tips for proofreading that will produce flawless, readable documents that give you the confidence you are delivering your very best to your readers.

1. Give it the Time it Requires

Quick proofreading is poor proofreading as I’ve learned the hard way. I have to go slow to make it effective.

2. Proofread Three Times

That doesn’t sound like fun, but you’ll learn to appreciate this approach. The first time through consider the content of what you’ve written. Clarify unclear thoughts and expand those that are too dense.

The second time through look for spelling errors and common mistakes, since you’ll soon learn that no spell checker is perfect. They often get confused with verb tense issues, and they cannot read your mind when you’ve typed one word but meant to type a homonym (bow/bough, accept/except, there/their, etc). Reading the piece backwards at this point causes you to focus on each word to check for the common errors discussed.

The last time through, seek to enrich the vocabulary of the piece. Allow the thesaurus to be your friend when looking for better word choices.

3. Let your Writing Age Before You Hit Send

I try to let blog posts and important articles sit for at least a few hours before I do a final edit. I often find my thoughts are even more clear and can be articulated with much greater effectiveness and clarity.

4. Find a Proofreading Friend to be Your Editor

Do you know a fellow writer that would be willing to serve as a second set of eyes before you deliver your work to be viewed by thousands of sets of peepers? Have thick skin and ask them to look not only for spelling and grammar errors, but to offer word choice suggestions and even make critically constructive evaluations of content. Your pride might be a bit tweaked, but you’ll soon learn to be thankful when your writing improves and your feedback shows that your readers are noticing.

5. Concise it!

Technically, concise is not a verb, but it should be! It’s the quickest way to say “cut your writing down to the essential points and words.” If you don’t add clarifying sentences to the final draft, shoot to make it 5% to 15% shorter than your draft. Cut fat, not meat, and your writing will benefit immensely.

6. Write Conversationally

If your article or post reads like something delivered at a dry, academic symposium, it will likely be received with little enthusiasm. Write like you are explaining your thoughts in a friendly chat with friends. It may help to read your work aloud to yourself or someone else to verify that it sounds conversational. Record it and listen to it as a way to measure it’s readability.

7. Edit from a Printed Copy

This may make it easier on the eyes, since a screen can get a bit blurry after hours at the keyboard. A printed version is also useful for making notes with red pen, crossing out excess verbiage, and changing vocabulary prior to implementing the corrections in a final version.

8. Avoid Distractions

Proofreading takes total concentration. I keep earphones nearby and tune into white noise if I have to, to compensate for a boisterous environment. I want to meld with the writing during my three-phase proofreading so I will not miss any opportunity to correct or improve the content.

9. Do a Numbers Scan

If you use numbers in the work, quickly verify you got the order correct – 457 not 475, or added the right number of zeros when stating the U.S. population at 300 million.

10. Polish your Writing, Don’t Wear the Finish Off of It

Do everything I’ve suggested, and then let it go. Clean up grammar and spelling; clarify muddled sentences; replace boring words with vascular ones that bleed when you cut them. And then refuse to obsess about making it better, better, better… Eventually it will begin to deteriorate! Don’t overdo it. Learn to know the tipping point between improving the work and making it “too perfect by half.” That takes time and experience, and is the sign of truly mature writing and proofreading technique.

Professional writers develop a proofreading technique that is customized to their style, incorporating many or all of these rules. They will tell you that their writing improves remarkably through the process. It is the crucial final series of steps that pushes their writing from good to great, setting it apart from the crowd.

Number of subscribers is one of the many factors that determine success of a blog/website. Apart from all other traffic to a website E-mail subscribers are valued at priority-#1. It’s also measured as the conversion rate of a blog.

How many of your daily visitors gets converted as your subscribers? It is a measure of success of your blog/website content and quality. In this period of Information Overload, people only subscribes to the best one available out there.

Building a good readership is not an easy task. You have to be a little smart with your work for that. As important is building a good number of subscribers, so is maintaining them with satisfaction. I am not here dictating how to increase your readership! A myriad of articles are available on this topic out on the web/blogosphere.

Here’s a simple tip!

I would like to share a simple trick that almost doubled the daily subscription rate of one of our blog on Electronics Circuits and Devices. It’s so simple! Just use an “attention graphic” just above your Subscription form, like given in the image below.

Trick functions so simple and it attracts or catches the attention of your visitor. People usually visit the website for some information and after getting “what they want” they usually quits that website. Here comes the importance of this graphic. If we can catch that valuable visitors eyes and convert him to a reader, we have won the game.

What the data tells?

Before using this attention graphic on the website its daily subscription rate was about 20 per day. I have analysed the data after placing this graphic for a week and it shows that rate of subscription just doubled.

Now it’s about 30 to 40 per day and this simple trick changed it. So don’t wait to apply this simple trick on your website because “Readers not made = Readers Lost”.
