Manny Malhotra, Ryane Clowe and Patrick Marleau also scored for the Sharks, who are 7-0-2 at home.

Claude Giroux scored twice and Danny Briere added a goal for the Flyers, who lost for the second time in nine games.

Thornton, who had points on each of Heatley's goals, earned four assists. He matched his franchise record, and has 30 points this season.

State public health officials announced yesterday the death of two people from swine flu, including a child under the age of 4, underscoring the vulnerability that young people appear to have to the unusual virus.

The child is just the second in Massachusetts to die of H1N1, and the first child to die of the virus during this fall's flu season. The first child died in the spring.

"Death due to H1N1 is rare, but it does happen,'' said Dr. Lauren Smith, medical director of the state Department of Public Health. "I understand that the death of the child is a tragic thing.''

Jose Juan Ortiz, speaking at celebrations marking Universal Children's Day, said Cuba, still under an economic embargo and is suffering from frequent natural disasters, has significantly reduced child mortality and improved child nutrition -- to levels that can rival those of developed countries.

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) — Police say a woman has died after being struck along with nine children by a car outside an Alabama middle school.

The nine children were injured in the accident Friday afternoon in Fairfield, about eight miles southwest of Birmingham. Three of the injured were listed in fair to serious condition at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Fairfield Police Sgt. Matthew Romei says 46-year-old Debrah Johnson died after undergoing surgery Friday night.

BERKELEY, Calif. – A student protest on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, over large fee increases at UC campuses statewide ended peacefully late on Friday.

Police arrested 41 demonstrators, according to the Associated Press, after as many as 50 students and their sympathizers occupied a building before dawn on Friday. A university spokesperson could not be reached immediately for comment.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Dozens of demonstrators who barricaded themselves inside a campus building at the University of California, Berkeley in a protest over fee hikes and budget cuts were removed late Friday, bringing the daylong occupation to an end, university officials said.

The occupation of a campus building at the University of California, Santa Cruz meanwhile continued.

Forty-one people inside UC Berkeley's Wheeler Hall were arrested on suspicion of trespassing around 5 p.m. Friday, said Claire Holmes, a spokeswoman for the university. The group, which included university students, was cited and released around 7:30 p.m to cheers from supporters outside.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — An explosion struck the office of an aid organization in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border on Saturday, wounding a security guard, police said.

It was the ninth attack in two weeks in and around Peshawar, the largest city in the northwest and the main gateway to the Al Qaeda and Taliban-infested frontier region. The area has been increasingly targeted as militants retaliate against an army offensive aimed at routing Taliban militants from a nearby region.

BEIJING -- A gas explosion tore through a coal mine in northern China on Saturday, killing 23 people and trapping another 90 nearly a third of a mile under ground, central government authorities said.

More than 390 people at the Xinxing mine in Heilongjiang province managed to escape after the 2:30 a.m. explosion, the State Administration of Work Safety said in a statement.

China Central Television reported that 23 were dead and the others were trapped about a third of a mile (500 meters) under ground. The report said the explosion was caused by a gas buildup.

The market is back to worrying about the economy. WASHINGTON - With no margin for rebellion, Senate Democrats pushed toward a crucial test vote tonight on their sweeping health care bill, with wavering moderates appearing to be falling in line.

One of three uncommitted centrists, Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, announced yesterday he would vote with his party's leaders on the must-pass procedural measure allowing debate to go forward.

Nelson said that it didn't mean he'd back the final bill, but that Nebraskans wanted changes to the health care system. "The Senate owes them a full and open debate,'' he said in a statement.

Hasan intensified his communications with a radical Yemeni American cleric and began to discuss surreptitious financial transfers and other steps that could translate his thoughts into action, according to two sources briefed on a collection of secret e-mails between the two.

The e-mails were obtained by an FBI-led task force in San Diego between late last year and June but were not forwarded to the military, according to government and congressional sources. Some were sent to the FBI's Washington field office, triggering an assessment into whether they raised national security concerns, but those intercepted later were not, the sources said.

A gas blast at a coal mine in China has killed at least 11 people and left more than 100 trapped, state media reports.

Xinhua said 389 people escaped from the mine in Hegang City in northern Heilongjiang province, and rescue teams were trying to reach those trapped.
