There's nothing glamorous or thrilling about the end of the world in The Road. The planet - people, plants and animals, even the atmosphere - is dying away with a mournful, ugly whimper.

Author Cormac McCarthy's 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel - which finally hits screens Wednesday - may be the grimmest of all post-apocalyptic tales. No pretty people bravely facing a future death as in On the Beach. No tough action heroes fighting eccentric villains in the style of The Road Warrior or a hundred other doomsday melodramas.

DETROIT - Black ties and gowns filled a ballroom Saturday in a big-bucks salute to Detroit-style royalty — the King of Motown, the Queen of Soul and the Kid of Rock.

British TV personality David Frost will be honored at the 37th Annual International Emmy Awards for a wide-ranging career that has taken him from pioneering political satire on television to conducting serious interviews with former President Richard Nixon and other newsmakers.

ABC's Barbara Walters will present the International Emmy Founders Award to Frost at Monday night's awards gala at the Hilton New York Hotel.

The glove sold for nine times the pre-auction estimate

A rhinestone-encrusted glove worn by Michael Jackson the first time he performed the Moonwalk has been sold at auction for $350,000 (£212,000).

The glove, among 70 items belonging to the late singer which went on sale in New York, was sold for nine times the expected price.

A jacket worn by Jackson on his 1989 "Bad" tour was sold for $225,000 while a fedora hat went for $22,000.

New York (CNN) -- More than 80 Michael Jackson collectibles -- including the late pop star's famous rhinestone-studded glove from a 1983 performance -- were auctioned off Saturday, reaping a total $2 million.

Profits from the auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square crushed pre-sale expectations of only $120,000 in sales.

The highly prized memorabilia, which included items spanning the many stages of Jackson's career, came from more than 30 fans, associates and family members of the singer who contacted Julien's Auctions to sell their gifts and mementos.

NEW YORK—Marv Albert said Saturday he was never involved in an altercation with 50 Cent, denying Internet reports of a fight on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

According to the reports, punches were thrown after members of the rapper's entourage didn't recognize Albert, the longtime sports broadcaster who was appearing as a guest on the show on Wednesday night.

But Albert told The Associated Press he was not even close to the exchange, which he believed was caused when a member of 50 Cent's party was prevented by show security from using a phone in the room that was supposed to belong to Albert.

SALEM, Ore., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Traditional Salvation Army donation kettles are on the streets to accept cash for the holidays -- but in Oregon they're happy to accept plastic, officials say.

An "electronic kettle," moving around the Salem area, offers donors the ability to donate more than spare change; they can donate with a credit card, Salem's Statesman Journal reported Saturday.

"Everyone is having a tough time with the economy, especially those in need in our area," Mary Yoder of the Salvation Army said. "We really want to extend to those who want to give a variety of different ways that we can do that."

Michael Lohan was receiving money for securing paying gigs on behalf of Jon Gosselin, he says, a fact that could doom Jonny Boy in his legal battle with TLC.

Jon Gosselin entered into a business relationship with Hailey Glassman, Mike Heller and Michael Lohan to earn money, all in violation of his TLC contract.

Though unsigned, the contract led to Jon being paid for outside appearances that violated his TLC deal, Michael Lohan himself told the celeb gossip site.
