You might be surprised to find out that I love Valentine's Day. In short, I operate on the idea that life is brief so we should tell (and show!) the people who we love that as often as possible.

Valentine's Day gives me an opportunity to build DIY baskets for my kids, to plan special meals & treats, and even to host parties (we held a Valentine-themed party for all of the 8th grade girls at my daughter's school last year).

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

A lovely picture book that quotes Robert Frost’s magnanimous poem word for word - without variation or commentary. Rich, melancholy illustrations fit the tone and beat the poem. Not too dark, but also gorgeously moody. The protagonist of the illustrations is a young woman in braids, a long skirt, and a belted coat. She is reminiscent of Anne of Green Gables or Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is hard to decipher emotions of the main character, which is exactly how the poem reads. Is the author soaking in the beauty of the snowy woods or is she heartbroken, ready to give up? No one knows.

Just released in March 2024, this brand new cookbook bills itself as "the quick-and-easy cookbook for busy families, featuring 150 simple, everyday recipes." I'll preface this by saying that I'm somewhat of a cookbook snob. In other words, I'm not easy to impress. This one, however, appears to offer the things I value most in a cookbook: bold, beautiful photographs; clear directions; simple ingredient lists; a cover without a picture of the author on it, and recipes that serve 6-8. We tried the Grilled Flatbread with Arugula and Vegetables recipe last night and it won rave reviews among the whole family. Can't wait to dive in more in the upcoming weeks!
