Unseen Ring of Fire by Devils Rancher

Another Improvisational thing from my new band Carbon 7. This one's a bit long, at 19 minutes. Music for coloring your hair, mowing the lawn, or piloting a doomed starship into the sun to save humanity. When we started this project up, I envisioned it to be psychedelic, but this seems more like science fiction soundtrack, to me.

We stepped out onto Dennis' patio to see if we could catch the eclipse on Sunday evening, but it was down behind the trees, (hence the title) so we went back inside and made this, instead.

Spontaneously composed -- Ron suggested the key of F# and away we went. I'm playing my '64 Thunderbird.

lace-making for the single guy by daisystomper

Intricate filtered organ and cello sounds. From the old blog project of mine, www.clangjingleclang.com. I was feeling nostalgic and thought I'd put this track I made about a year ago online. If you're interested in how the whole song-a-day-for-a-year thing worked out, check it out. There's also a "Best of the Blog" page to catch the highlights.

Turn out the lights by channey

On a glorious Sunday morning I took my guitar down to a grassy patch beside the sea, and proceeded to write and record this song. There's a bit of wind, and birds singing along in the background - but it all adds to the charm. I wrote the song for my good friend who I was staying with at the time - we only get to see each other every few years when the stars align (different continents), and this song is about turning off all the nonsense in our lives and focusing on the important, and brighter, points

Eleanor Rigby by Disbro

I've was in a bit of a Beatles mood last weekend, and recorded this as well as my previous post of "And Your Bird Can Sing". It's been fun to redo the songs with my arsenal of sampled orchestra, etc. I'm not the greatest singer, but I've learned a lot listening to the original, and working with my own voice.

In C by sleepy pete

A live version of Terry Riley's piece "In C". Recorded at Ella St. last summer with cortex on his bass/bari uke (thanks, cortex!). This was the first part of the tune. The second part didn't quite work out, but was fun. You may not believe it, but we were reading the music.

Still by fingers_of_fire

For the last song on my record "Innocent Explanations", a trip down memory lane... ...both literally and lyrically. Shortly after writing this, in the summer of 2008, I quickly recorded a rough demo, which I then posted here. After several performances and various studio incarnations, I'm happy to present the finished product. Close listeners will hear that I implemented some of the suggestions from the comments on that last post.

This song is about falling in love in Brooklyn, and about how the memory of love, while not nearly as great as the real thing, can be a pretty good companion if used appropriately. Lyrical twists and turns inspired by Andy Partridge. Vibe inspired by Leon Redbone. That's a '64 Strat through a '65 Deluxe mic'd by a Shure SM57 - a more meat and potatoes set up I defy you to find!

What the Thunder Said/The Purification Ritual (Epilogue) by askmeaboutLOOM

After writing/arranging, recording, and mixing the first five sections of The Wasteland, I found myself a bit spent, and struggling with the final movement, so I took a few days off to back away from it. I finally returned to it tonight, and, renewed, even managed to squeeze an extra track from it. Thus concludes the tour. Enjoy! See if you can guess which instruments are samples, which ones are real, but effected in post, which are completely dry with no post effects, and which are synthesized! Mouse over the instruments for the answers!

INSTRUMENTATION:
Timbill Corder (me) - Tank drum over timpano, Korg MS-10 "Wind" and "Thunder", Italian/French Vocals, composer, arranger, engineer, producer.
Kerry Folsom - Snake rattles, Banjo, Mandocello.
J. Benton Gross - Narrator

Program notes: Yes, I changed the "co co rico" line--blasphemy, I'm sure. Had Eliot ever actually seen a chicken?

The Epilogue track starts at approximately 7:24. I didn't want to split the tracks here because they flowed into one another in a way that wasn't practical to split, in this instance. Once the Bandcamp release is up, they'll be split there.

The bits that became The Purification Ritual were originally supposed to be the main instrumentation of What the Thunder Said, but they were recorded in reaction to my own demo vocal recording, which had a very different feel than the narration eventually delivered by Ben (my narrator for this section). I couldn't, for the life of me, get it to fit at all, but I thought it would be a damn shame to throw out such beautiful string work, so man vs sun suggested I make them their own separate track--another interlude, or an epilogue, like I did with Death by Waterphone. Turns out, it all worked, and the other parts I recorded for this track worked on their own, to better suit the ambience of the vocal delivery.

In Your Eyes by InfidelZombie

This song was inspired by our singer's video chats with her long distance beau. It is on the new Red On Strike album Her Own Little World, now available for download on Bandcamp. This is also a late music challenge entry for March, because it started off as me strumming the four chords on an acoustic (switched up a bit to C F Am G). Once I had the idea for the lyrics I knew Red had to sing it, and once we did it we knew it had to be on the new album, so it took a little while to get it posted.

I've posted two songs from this CD previously - Lover's Slide and BP Song. The CD is name your own price through at least 5/20/12, after which we'll probably ask 5 bucks or something for it.

Oh, there is one curse word in the lyrics.</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>chimprock, coversong, mushicore, saxgaze, shoegaze, swirlies, theharveygirls</itunes:keywords>

Hold On To Love (simplified version) by unSane

I decided to rearrange this song that I posted before to take out some of the crazy modulation and make it more straightforward. What do you think? This is just a one-take acoustic version to think about the arrangement. I kept one modulation in the final chorus, but I'm thinking about putting it in the second chorus, like it is in the earlier demo, but dropping the second modulation.

Anything For Her by fingers_of_fire

The penultimate track from my record "Innocent Explanations" is a Mick Taylor-era Stones-inspired romp with a nod to the harmonic sophistication of Andy Partridge. In case any one has been following along, in literally every song on this record there have been some kind of interruption to the drum tracks over the course of the song - some kind of stop. That was part happy accident, part deliberate - I just wanted to orchestrate drum tracks pretty specifically. (It also gave us the luxury of sticking the beginning of one take on to the end of another take, if necessary, although come to think of it, I don't think it was.) Anyway, for this song, I just simply asked the drummer to stop playing at the beginning of verse two. He came up with a great re-entrance fill a la Charlie Watts, and there you have it - problem solved!

Electric Eel (work-in-progress) by balistic

Chippy aquatic electro-funk. Somewhere between P-Funk and Drexciya. This is still pretty rough, but after giving my ears a rest for a few days and coming back to it, it's not quite as jagged as I'd feared. Needs smoother transitions and about a minute more length, but it might take me a while to get around to that.

Any critique, harsh or otherwise, is totally welcomed.

Yesterday's Karma Perpetuates by Devils Rancher

A spontaneous composition by my improv trio, Carbon 7 This is one where we actually intended to be somewhat melodious. We listened to each other well, and the interplay makes me happy. I like the motion. This is music for long-distance night driving, kitchen scullery, or perhaps making a rich, dark roux for gumbo - it's about exactly the right length to get it to that old-penny copper brown.

I audibly burp at the beginning, and Ron says "Nice belch, Broski." It ends not long after the Prophet 5 blew a fuse.
