Until You Remember by unSane

It's the summer of 1990, we're in a flat at the bottom of Muswell Hill, and my friend Graham and I have just got back from the pub, so naturally we fire up the ancient 4-track reel to reel and the shiny new SR16 drum machine, and record this... the first ever song I multitracked properly. Rescued off a long-forgotten cassette. I'm sure everything was recorded with an SM58.

vampire deer - windmill burning by pyramid termite

song 10 - a fictional account of the end of an era the windmill is burning on a hot spring night
while football players and their girls drink beer from paper cups
no one poured the kerosene, no one struck the light
no one threw the wicker on it, no, it just happened to go up
and the cops all stand and talk into their microphones
and the firemen nod and tell each other, it looks well contained
a few hippies in the shadows murmer like dark stones
and as the roof collapses, boy wolves howl as they've been trained

the windmill is burning, the smoke is hard and thick
and the offerings of paper cups pile on to the flames
they couldn't wait for the bulldozer, it was making them too sick
they drink their beer and holler without no sense of shame
the cops and the firemen don't do a goddamned thing
but you'd better turn your backs while you pass around that joint
it's the school's victory song the drunken voices sing
and the flames break down - was there ever any point?

vampire deer - gonna rain by pyramid termite

song 9 - it's just like high school - something's wrong with this place sunday morning, no one's here
wandering around, don't want to read
they're all off in that world i don't know
it must not be something that i need

wondering if it's going to rain
wondering if it's going to rain

it's jazz, folk and blues grating on my soul
music class ain't no place for rock and roll

wondering if it's going to rain
wondering if it's going to rain

painting of a half naked indian woman with tears on her face
it's just like high school - something's wrong with this place

wondering if it's going to rain
wondering if it's going to rain

got to sneak in through the side door, the jocks are all around
don't want their hostile stares, don't want to be found

i'm pretty sure it's going to rain
i'm pretty sure it's going to rain

Exploratory Songery by lordaych

A dilettante's first blush at Ableton Live and a MicrKORG This is raw and craptaculonicular (live loops poorly sync3d and performed and no drums) but I'll post 1t for posterity before someone jacks the lead synth part from my brain since I don't wear a tinfoil hat because it makes me look fat and is also a sign of paranoia. L3t me know if you've heard the lead melody before, because I wants to invents a new genre of the tetch-n0es.

This is about 6 passes of live-looping that all fit together nicely with the same mood (bleak, minimal, meditative) and tonality. Each pass was a guitar into a Line6 HD500 into a Gibson Echoplex into a Lexicon Vortex. Snipped and cleaned up in Audacity, edited together with Ardour then cleaned up in Audacity again.
vampire deer - breaking nails by pyramid termite

song 8 - those square pegs are going to fit in those round holes or ELSE i could never understand all the slipping rope
tying everyone to sand in the hourglass
i don't speak your language, i don't get all the neon hope
i feel like i'm the sacrifice in a pepsi generation mass
just like jesus, i want to break some nails

i slide into my snakeness as the giant mice begin
to call upon my darkness which was beaten into me
crush my head remove temptation, oh, i will never win
yes, i'm the only demon that i never really see
just like jesus, i want to break some nails

and maybe we'll be unified in bone burning light
and maybe we'll be teeth in the lips of the machine
and maybe we'll be walls that will rescue us from sight
but maybe i'll never get it and wonder what you mean
just like jesus, i want to break some nails

Intensely silly. As per this month's challenge, I was aiming for a 1940's Boogie Woogie kind of thing.
My fear was that it would veer into the territory of the Squirrel Nut Cherry Poppin' Voodoo Daddy-O Zippers kind of faux swing business that was so popular in the 1990's, which I think it sort of did, sadly.

vampire deer - the chase by pyramid termite

song 7 - someone's always got to be the police ... wanted to sleep with my girlfriend
but the guy at the dorm desk said no
ran ran ran like a hunted man
til i ran out of places to go
feeling just like an adam
who's had a little too much to eat
someone took exception
now they're racing me down the street

oh, no, no - the chase goes on

good times at the festival
everyone smoking away
cop gets nosy with jacob
and he rabbit runs away
ditches his stash in the woods
and the cop just gives him hell
"i could have shot you in the back boy
man, you never can tell"

Way Back When (studio version) by unSane

Final version of the rough acoustic demo I posted a few days back. A bit of blue-eyed soul, a bit of BONNY era Prefab Sprout, a bit of TEMPTED era Squeeze and a few 10cc harmonies, and the guitar from Alison. Did I miss anything? This is a lot more restrained than most of my tracks. I did have a lot more layers on it but I peeled them back or combined them. So just 2 tracks of guitar, drum, bass, electric piano and a few harmonies here and there.

Drums are NI Sixties, piano is NeoSoul, guitars are Jazzmaster on the neck into Scuffham S-Gear, bass is my cheapo Peavey into Guitar Rig.

Maybe a bit too much reverb on the main vocal, in the intro anyway.

Delta blues cover of Alt-J Breezeblocks. Consider May's challenge: Accepted. So, I thought to myself: If I'd make a futurecover, in what style would it be? Been a Delta blues fan since I heard good ol' Mississippi Fred - Goin' down to the River and well, match it up with something new that I like (Alt-J) and voilà, here you go! Hope you enjoy.

vampire deer - football nation by pyramid termite

song 6 - a long one with lots of guitar and some screaming stallion defense never yields
hit them, hit them, leave them hurting
we will sack the unbelievers
we will make them drink the golden calf
no tolerance for the undermen
hit them, hit them, while you can
worship the idea of a blistering sun
to cleanse the world of the enemy

football nation gonna win

we are the privileged of this world
you do not refuse us our place in life
the sex we crave, the factory slave
the dollar sharp as a knife
we will cut you from the system
we will cut you from the earth
we will cut you from the team
we will cut you right from birth

fucking crazy
you people are fucking crazy
with your perfect lawns
and god safely pawned
you people are fucking crazy

Music in Search of AI and Marvin Minsky by bfootdav

Music I wrote while searching for Minsky's The Society of Mind. A kind of experimental Baroque for piano. During the mid-'90s I decided to set Minsky's book The Society of Mind to music. But first I had to find it. This was no small task back then. To tide me over while looking for that book I wrote this piece. I had read in an interview with Minsky that he had been passionate about the music of Bach so I took bits of Bach, altered them in ways I can no longer remember the specifics of, and put it all together. The result is something Baroque-sounding but definitely not anything Bach would have written. There is also text that accompanies the piece that you have to download the sheet music for.

I have a blog and a blog post with more details here.

Here is a direct link to the sheet music in pdf form.

And for the last bit of self-promotion, go here for the rest of my music.

Way Back When by unSane

In which my Prefab Sprout obsession results in a nakedly sappy love song speculating about the origins and end of the universe. This is a sloppy (timing's off and you can hear the click in places) but you get the idea. It came out of trying to learn Prefab Sprout's BONNY, with it's lovely Fmaj7 vamp at the beginning, which turned into the opening riff, and all happened from there.

The only thing I don't like about it is the hiatus after the first bridge just before the drums come in. Feels like it needs a cut there or something.

This is pretty acoustic but I think there's an electric version in there somewhere.

This was made essentially from scratch using the Nsound python library and lots of info from Synth Secrets (some of which I may even have understood). Lots still to do/learn.

Paranoid Android by askmeaboutLOOM

The next offering in our revisit/completion to the OK Computer challenge; is it troubling to anyone else that I find this version incredibly relaxing? This recording features a special cameo from our good friend and far-too-infrequent collaborator Luke Furman, who sent us some delightfully dry narration for section 3 using only his MacBook built-in mic, in an open field. It was so dry that I couldn't think of where to put it with the noise. Eventually, I realised that the snippet was, instead, an answer without a question.

All instruments were performed live in a single take except for the whamola. All vocals were recorded in separate takes, as well.

INSTRUMENTATION:
Timbill Corder (me): Korg DS-10, Korg MS-10, Whamola, Lead Vox (pt. 1), Live Effects, Production
Trey Beauregard (man vs sun): Alesis QSR, Ethereal Dialpad, Whamola, Android Vox (pt. 1), Lead Vox (pt. 2), Engineering
Kerry Folsom: Electric Mandocello (THAT'S ALL HE EVER NEEDED TO DO)
Luke Furman: Vox (pt. 3)

vampire deer - grayscale morning by pyramid termite

song 5 - so little has changed in 40 years trying to think about
who invented the act of war
the mighty will tell the weak how to live
if they ever want in the door
walking in a grayscale morning
don't really understand my moods
philosophy leaves me wordless
and all i got left is the blues

trying to justify
my existance to people who want me gone
who want me out of their america
who want to weed me like a lawn
walking in a grayscale morning
don't really understand my moods
philosophy leaves me wordless
all i got left is the blues

they teach them to play to win
bloody and broken on the news
50 thousand dead for a flag
in a war we had to lose
walking in a grayscale morning
don't really understand my moods
philosophy leaves me wordless
and all i got left is the blues

i never would fight for you
cause you've always been fighting me
don't tell me you fought for my freedom
when i've never really been free

Kiev by Brodyaga

This is perhaps one of Ummagma's darker moments, but as the song proceeds, it lets more and more light in. There is a moral to this story, like it or not, but the soundtrack to go with it makes it that much easier to swallow. :) Have you asked yourself now just how well
You understand our human nature
Hard to find the answer when we've become
far estranged from mother nature
And we end up killing the life that
we can't sustain ourselves without
You know we're so intent on filling our pockets
Just cannot help but cast all doubts upon all
All our facts and fictions
We've gotta sort heads from tails
'Cuz this is not a game
And we're in need of rules for living
Or an intervention
We lost the race
Just as soon as we began to take
More than what we end up giving

And all's for sale
Just read the signs
And our decay means
it's time to say
It's high time to change our ways
From faking its great
Not gonna take, not gonna take
Damage done
Now time for healing

Hear the sighs from heaven
Hear the sighs right here
Feel the wave that's coming
Not gonna take not gonna take not
Damage done, now time for healing

(and if you like this song, you very well might like this and this too)
