Dear Santa by CharlesV42

A Christmas track for this year's XMas EP. Every year I get some friends to write some original Christmas songs. By the nature of my social circle, they usually end up snarky or ironic, but there are some sweet gems too. Anyone interested in writing an original Christmas song this year? MeFi mail me and we'll work it out.

Otom Null by cloeburner

Last night's lo-fi dubstep trip-out. Ableton, Vocoder, Effects Pedals and 4 track. The hiss of the 4 track is bothersome, but I love the degradation of sound otherwise. This is staring out the window music.

Sandy Boys by usonian

A traditional old-timey tune as recorded by my pseudonymous string band, Crookneck John. Run through Izotope Vinyl because it lends itself to this type of music. Also because I don't have time to work out a mix right now, and especially because I'm self-conscious as all get-out about my vocals.

(By the way, if anyone is interested in collaborating on old-timey stuff, drop me a line. I'd like to see Crookneck John become a sort of a rotating collective, and this may be one of few places eclectic enough to attract the right kind of people: computer music nerds who also like old-time stringband music.)

County Down by Astro Zombie

A song for the Peter O'Tooles where I seem to be using the names of locations in Ireland as a metaphor for oral sex, which I am sure they don't appreciate and for which I apologize. LYRICS:

A Bangor cailín named McGowan
Had a reputation of no little renown
A pint of ale
And she wouldn't fail
To head for the County Down

From Dundonald to Ballykinler
Lads asked with a grin "Where you been, sir?"
Each named the cailín
And then explained they'd been
To County Down for to win her

A doctor named Pat, specialty psychiatric,
Had a billfold as thick as a fat brick
In all County Down and
Of every hamlet in town
She spent her time only going Downpatrick

A Bangor cailín named McGowan
Had a reputation of no little renown
A pint of ale
And she wouldn't fail
To head for the County Down

Lowlands Away by tmcw

A version of a traditional shanty song, recorded mono with a guitar. Well, this is kind of a terribly sad song, with a lot of interchangeable verses which are all pretty sad. And, oddly, while I was learning it, I got some pretty sad news.

Anyway, I don't often think about vocals, and this makes me do it, and it also makes me think about guitar arrangement (simple as it may be) of a song that rarely has less than two singers.

I feel weird doing versions of traditional songs with so little background in shanty or folk singing, and hopefully this isn't a sacrilege to the tradition.

Broken Wheel (skelp version) by MajorDundee

Having used my current DAW for the last 3 years, and spending countless hours re-recording tracks that were too slow, I finally discover that it does have a varispeed function. Just how fucking dumb is that.......? This is now in the key of......errr........H?? No such key, huh? Well baby, there is now....

Oh, and speeding things up very usefully disguises slight but irritating vocal wobbles when attempting to hold long notes.

She Too Rah'd My Loo Rah'd by Astro Zombie

A love song, and, possibly, an extremely flithy one; second song for the Peter O'Tooles. LYRICS:

She's not the richest girl girl I knew
Nor the prettiest I ever sawed
But Oh my God how I miss her so
She too-rah'd my loo-rah'd

I forgave her for her many mistakes
We make them; we're all flawed
But there's one thing she always done right
She too-rah'd my loo-rah'd

And my girl knew how to cook
She had a genius for handling cod
The only thing she did better so:
She too-rah'd my loo-rah'd

I showed photos to me friends
And the found her somewhat of
They couldn't believe what she done to me
She too-rah'd my loo-rah'd

I made a promise to me gal
And crossed me heart and swore to God
I'd never look at another so long as she
She too-rah'd my loo-rah'd

When we're old I'll love her so
Not mind her aging facade
Let's draw the windows and turn out the light

Butcher (Leonard Cohen cover) by Saellys

Had I my druthers, I would be in a blues duo akin to The Black Keys or The Pack A.D. But I'm not, so I have to make do with smacking my Epiphone around and putting amp simulation on my voice. If ever I find a drummer who shares my vision, we will cover this song properly. Recorded live using GarageBand, an SM-57, and a Line6 TonePort II.

Walkabout (Atlas Sound cover) by Corduroy

In which I decide to stop candy butt-ing around it, and attempt to join the reverb drenched, echo cave sound of today. This doesn't really sound like anything I've done before, so I'd love to hear a couple reactions. Here is the wonderful original.

How do you use reverb? How do you retain a sense of space when reverb tends to blur everything?

Forbidden to Face the Natural Light - Part 1 by The3rdMan

Part 1 of 3 of a concert work for brass, percussion, and This American Life! This work is basically a "setting" of the Peabody award-winning expose into Guantanamo Bay, "Habeas Schmaebas"

Ira Glass gave me permission to compose this work, which premiered in Boston under Brian Kaufman and his brass ensemble back in March.

This is one of my first posts, and though I know its a little out of left field I still hope you'll enjoy it. Parts 2 and 3 to come...

The Christian Life by chococat

Cover of a Byrds cover of an old Louvin Brothers song. I did this this afternoon as an exercise in trying to get a good acoustic guitar sound, as per the discussion in this thread.
For the gear nerdly, it's a Martin HD-28 recorded with a Studio Projects C1 condenser positioned at my left ear, facing down a bit; a Shure SM57 pointed at the sound hole, and an LR Baggs M1 Active pickup in the soundhole, direct into the interface. Didn't use much of the Shure, blended the pickup and the C1 to taste.
But then of course I had to layer a whole bunch of other stuff on top, it being me...so it's probably hard for anyone else to hear the acoustic very well.
And the lead vocal is weak but I was just horsin' around so I didn't fix it.
It's not like it's for reals or anything.

Oh Balloon Boy by cortex

This is my messy pop-rock interpretation of mikepop's excellent parodic adaptation of the old murder ballad "Darling Corey", which this sounds basically nothing like. Mix is a mess, everything recorded not-particularly-closely-miked in my big bare basement so there's a whole lot of room in everything and I couldn't figure out how to make it behave.

Definitely need to look into more properly miking my drums, since this whole stereo room mic setup makes it just about impossible to control the splash of the cymbals. Rolled out electric bass for the first time in a while to try and give the rhythm section a little more thump.

Rolled out electric bass for the first time in a while to try and give the rhythm section a little more thump.</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>balloon, boy, collaboration, falcon, heene, mefimusicchallenge, mikepop, topicalsong</itunes:keywords>

joe's last mix by LooseFilter

A fantastic piece of symphonic music with deep connections to electronica, joe's last mix by Tanner Menard is a fun ride (this performance is by one of my ensembles with me conducting). I've posted this before, but he and I are doing something different with the piece, and I'm wondering if any of you are interested in participating.... We've decided to release the performance materials and recordings free, under a Creative Commons license, and launched a new kind of composition contest: we are seeking remixes of this piece, either electronic or composed. The best composed remixes will be recorded by some of the finest university ensembles in the country (favors from friends), and the best electronic remixes will be featured on the site and in subsequent press about the experiment.

Though this is different from the music normally shared here, I would value any input you all have to offer, and would love it if someone wanted to create a remix! All materials, details, and a couple of other performance recordings can be found here.

Joe Wilson's Lament by sredefer

Not as current as a balloon boy song, but hey...I wrote it after being at the gym and seeing Joe Wilson on every TV news channel. It's pretty 'topical', I think. Think of it as a love song between Joe Wilson and Obama. Recorded really late at night, so it's all garageband software instruments and loops (the drum loop is a little off)...also the singing is more like whisper-singing.

Derry Pair by Astro Zombie

The first song for my new Irish band, The Peter O'Tooles, about a comely young woman from Derry and her desirable fruits. LYRICS:

What's that she'd got a hiding
Under the tight blouse that she wear
She winks and then exposes it
Exposes her Derry Pear

Any man what sees it now
Crosses himself and says a prayer
It's heaven just to look upon it
Upon her Derry Pear

It's hard enough when she walks by
Not just to stop and stare
Some men are bold and call right out
What I'd do for that Derry Pear

She carries it in whatever she's got
Her hands or a spare brassiere
Most men want to help her with it
With her Derry Pear

Her face is bright and pretty now
Her manner is gentle and fair
But men they are mostly keen for
For her Derry Pear

She has a lovely singing voice
We love when she shares her Derry aire
But men say they that much prefer o
Prefer her Derry Pear

Men they fight just to be with her
They shake their fists and glare
She likes it when they battle for
For her Derry Pear

Many a man has been driven mad
Frothing and tearing their hair
They never recovered from just one look
Look at her Derry Pear

Reincarnation Blues by crapples

What I would sound like if I were trying to sound like Bob Dylan - if Dylan were simultaneously "bringin' it" and "keepin' it real". I wrote every word and note of this song - but I was obviously listening to Dylan a lot when I did it. I hope he can't sue me for wishing I were him.

The Life of Perfect Creatures by chimaera

The first Earthling sent into orbit was a dog named Laika. She didn't know that they had no intention of bringing her home. The Life of Perfect Creatures

Chorus
I'll be sent into the sky
On a stack of steel and flame
Though I won't understand why
Everyone will know my name

Perfect creatures overhead
Tracing out an orbit's line
They're the first that we shall send
Perfect creatures for all time

Verse1
Found astray on a cold, cold street
Found a way to complete the destiny of me
A way to burn a path into the sky

Chorus

Verse2
Now the light from the outside's blocked
Now it's dark I'm without a window next to me
I'm afraid but I can't stop what I can't see

Verse3
When I fall back down to earth
A light in the sky, and my transformation complete now
As ash and dust, I will touch your sleeping brow

Chorus
