It's the summer of 1990, we're in a flat at the bottom of Muswell Hill, and my friend Graham and I have just got back from the pub, so naturally we fire up the ancient 4-track reel to reel and the shiny new SR16 drum machine, and record this... the first ever song I multitracked properly. Rescued off a long-forgotten cassette. I'm sure everything was recorded with an SM58.

song 10 - a fictional account of the end of an era the windmill is burning on a hot spring night while football players and their girls drink beer from paper cups no one poured the kerosene, no one struck the light no one threw the wicker on it, no, it just happened to go up and the cops all stand and talk into their microphones and the firemen nod and tell each other, it looks well contained a few hippies in the shadows murmer like dark stones and as the roof collapses, boy wolves howl as they've been trained the windmill is burning, the smoke is hard and thick and the offerings of paper cups pile on to the flames they couldn't wait for the bulldozer, it was making them too sick they drink their beer and holler without no sense of shame the cops and the firemen don't do a goddamned thing but you'd better turn your backs while you pass around that joint it's the school's victory song the drunken voices sing and the flames break down - was there ever any point?

This is about 6 passes of live-looping that all fit together nicely with the same mood (bleak, minimal, meditative) and tonality. Each pass was a guitar into a Line6 HD500 into a Gibson Echoplex into a Lexicon Vortex. Snipped and cleaned up in Audacity, edited together with Ardour then cleaned up in Audacity again. There's more of my stuff on soundcloud.

Intensely silly. As per this month's challenge, I was aiming for a 1940's Boogie Woogie kind of thing.
My fear was that it would veer into the territory of the Squirrel Nut Cherry Poppin' Voodoo Daddy-O Zippers kind of faux swing business that was so popular in the 1990's, which I think it sort of did, sadly.

Final version of the rough acoustic demo I posted a few days back. A bit of blue-eyed soul, a bit of BONNY era Prefab Sprout, a bit of TEMPTED era Squeeze and a few 10cc harmonies, and the guitar from Alison. Did I miss anything? This is a lot more restrained than most of my tracks. I did have a lot more layers on it but I peeled them back or combined them. So just 2 tracks of guitar, drum, bass, electric piano and a few harmonies here and there. Drums are NI Sixties, piano is NeoSoul, guitars are Jazzmaster on the neck into Scuffham S-Gear, bass is my cheapo Peavey into Guitar Rig. Maybe a bit too much reverb on the main vocal, in the intro anyway.

Music I wrote while searching for Minsky's The Society of Mind. A kind of experimental Baroque for piano. During the mid-'90s I decided to set Minsky's book The Society of Mind to music. But first I had to find it. This was no small task back then. To tide me over while looking for that book I wrote this piece. I had read in an interview with Minsky that he had been passionate about the music of Bach so I took bits of Bach, altered them in ways I can no longer remember the specifics of, and put it all together. The result is something Baroque-sounding but definitely not anything Bach would have written. There is also text that accompanies the piece that you have to download the sheet music for. In which my Prefab Sprout obsession results in a nakedly sappy love song speculating about the origins and end of the universe. This is a sloppy (timing's off and you can hear the click in places) but you get the idea. It came out of trying to learn Prefab Sprout's BONNY, with it's lovely Fmaj7 vamp at the beginning, which turned into the opening riff, and all happened from there. The only thing I don't like about it is the hiatus after the first bridge just before the drums come in. Feels like it needs a cut there or something. This is pretty acoustic but I think there's an electric version in there somewhere.

Been playing around with synthesis recently - this is the first thing I've made that I'm relatively happy with. This was made essentially from scratch using the Nsound python library and lots of info from Synth Secrets (some of which I may even have understood). Lots still to do/learn.

The next offering in our revisit/completion to the OK Computer challenge; is it troubling to anyone else that I find this version incredibly relaxing? This recording features a special cameo from our good friend and far-too-infrequent collaborator Luke Furman, who sent us some delightfully dry narration for section 3 using only his MacBook built-in mic, in an open field. It was so dry that I couldn't think of where to put it with the noise. Eventually, I realised that the snippet was, instead, an answer without a question. All instruments were performed live in a single take except for the whamola. All vocals were recorded in separate takes, as well. This is perhaps one of Ummagma's darker moments, but as the song proceeds, it lets more and more light in.
