By the nature of my social circle, they usually end up snarky or ironic, but there are some sweet gems too. Anyone interested in writing an original Christmas song this year? A traditional old-timey tune as recorded by my pseudonymous string band, Crookneck John. Run through Izotope Vinyl because it lends itself to this type of music. Also because I don't have time to work out a mix right now, and especially because I'm self-conscious as all get-out about my vocals. (By the way, if anyone is interested in collaborating on old-timey stuff, drop me a line. I'd like to see Crookneck John become a sort of a rotating collective, and this may be one of few places eclectic enough to attract the right kind of people: computer music nerds who also like old-time stringband music.)

A version of a traditional shanty song, recorded mono with a guitar. Well, this is kind of a terribly sad song, with a lot of interchangeable verses which are all pretty sad. And, oddly, while I was learning it, I got some pretty sad news. Anyway, I don't often think about vocals, and this makes me do it, and it also makes me think about guitar arrangement (simple as it may be) of a song that rarely has less than two singers. I feel weird doing versions of traditional songs with so little background in shanty or folk singing, and hopefully this isn't a sacrilege to the tradition.

Having used my current DAW for the last 3 years, and spending countless hours re-recording tracks that were too slow, I finally discover that it does have a varispeed function. Just how fucking dumb is that.......? This is now in the key of......errr........H?? No such key, huh? Well baby, there is now.... Oh, and speeding things up very usefully disguises slight but irritating vocal wobbles when attempting to hold long notes.

This doesn't really sound like anything I've done before, so I'd love to hear a couple reactions. Here is the wonderful original. How do you use reverb? How do you retain a sense of space when reverb tends to blur everything?

This work is basically a "setting" of the Peabody award-winning expose into Guantanamo Bay, "Habeas Schmaebas" Ira Glass gave me permission to compose this work, which premiered in Boston under Brian Kaufman and his brass ensemble back in March. This is one of my first posts, and though I know its a little out of left field I still hope you'll enjoy it. Parts 2 and 3 to come...

Cover of a Byrds cover of an old Louvin Brothers song. I did this this afternoon as an exercise in trying to get a good acoustic guitar sound, as per the discussion in this thread. For the gear nerdly, it's a Martin HD-28 recorded with a Studio Projects C1 condenser positioned at my left ear, facing down a bit; a Shure SM57 pointed at the sound hole, and an LR Baggs M1 Active pickup in the soundhole, direct into the interface. Didn't use much of the Shure, blended the pickup and the C1 to taste. But then of course I had to layer a whole bunch of other stuff on top, it being me...so it's probably hard for anyone else to hear the acoustic very well. And the lead vocal is weak but I was just horsin' around so I didn't fix it. It's not like it's for reals or anything.

This is my messy pop-rock interpretation of mikepop's excellent parodic adaptation of the old murder ballad "Darling Corey", which this sounds basically nothing like. Mix is a mess, everything recorded not-particularly-closely-miked in my big bare basement so there's a whole lot of room in everything and I couldn't figure out how to make it behave. Definitely need to look into more properly miking my drums, since this whole stereo room mic setup makes it just about impossible to control the splash of the cymbals. Rolled out electric bass for the first time in a while to try and give the rhythm section a little more thump.

A fantastic piece of symphonic music with deep connections to electronica, joe's last mix by Tanner Menard is a fun ride (this performance is by one of my ensembles with me conducting). I've posted this before, but he and I are doing something different with the piece, and I'm wondering if any of you are interested in participating.... We've decided to release the performance materials and recordings free, under a Creative Commons license, and launched a new kind of composition contest: we are seeking remixes of this piece, either electronic or composed. The best composed remixes will be recorded by some of the finest university ensembles in the country (favors from friends), and the best electronic remixes will be featured on the site and in subsequent press about the experiment. Though this is different from the music normally shared here, I would value any input you all have to offer, and would love it if someone wanted to create a remix! All materials, details, and a couple of other performance recordings can be found here.

Not as current as a balloon boy song, but hey...I wrote it after being at the gym and seeing Joe Wilson on every TV news channel. It's pretty 'topical', I think. Think of it as a love song between Joe Wilson and Obama. Recorded really late at night, so it's all garageband software instruments and loops (the drum loop is a little off)...also the singing is more like whisper-singing.
