North Shore engulfed in smoke as fire burns for 10 hours!

A brush fire on the Kahului Airport side of Stable Road caused the shut down of 3 of our cameras Saturday morning.

As flames lept 100 feet into the air we watched in fear and horor as the Maui Fire Department and the Kahalui Airport Fire Department fought for 10 hours to bring the blaze under control.

One resident was evacuated but no structures were lost. There was some roof damage because of flying embers….a lucky escape indeed.

Marvin Moniz, the airport district manager said that the fire next to the airport’s main 7,000-foot runway was not significantly affecting airport operations.

While winds gusting at 35 to 40 mph blew smoke away from the airfield and the airport terminal they also fanned the flames and caused the fire to spread rapidly through the dense undergrowth and pine trees.

Smoke and ash were being carried toward Kahului, Wailuku and Waiehu, making those areas of Central Maui hazy. In fact you can see the effect from our Kanaha cam replay stream just before it goes off line.

The fire was reported at 10:18 a.m., and after 1 p.m. it was estimated to have blackened 15 to 20 acres, although dense smoke made it difficult to accurately determine the blaze’s size.

Airport rescue fire crews were assisting Maui firefighters from Kahului, Paia, Lahaina, Wailea, Kihei and Makawao. The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter was making water drops with another helicopter, and bulldozers and water tankers from the county Department of Public Works also were helping to fight the blaze.

At 8 pm we heard the last of these vehicles leave the site. In all it took 10 hours to extinguish the blaze.

We would like to thank the men and women of the fire departments, police and other services who fought to bring this situation under control and save what could have been a disaster for many of the residents and visitors of this neighborhood.

Kitesurfing Service Announcement – Keep The Sport Alive On The North Shore!

Maui Kitesurfing is dependant on the FAA Waiver which allows kiteboarding on Maui’s north Shore within the FAA controlled Airport Zone.

Under the responsibilities of the waiver, the waiver holder has a duty to inform the public of the waiver’s conditions, and rules that apply to kiteboarders, and meet regularly with the FAA and Water Safety and governing bodies to discuss any issues or conflicts.

The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) controls the Airspace within a 5 mile radius of all major US airports.

The FAA has regulations that specifically relate to and address kite flying, and forbid particular kiting activities within the 5mile zone.

The FAA has issued a conditional Waiver that allows some restricted kiteboarding activities, within certain areas.

Without this FAA Waiver, all kiteboarding would be banned within a five mile radius of the Kahului Airport (OGG).

It is in the interests of all kiteboarders to respect these rules and to inform other kiteboarders. Always follow the directives of the Lifeguards, Rangers and DLNR.

In this way we will be able to preserve our access to ride on the north shore.

Maximum Height: Surface to 125 feet above ground level (AGL)
Activity Site: Island of Maui within 5 miles of the Kahului International Airport excepting 1⁄2 nautical mile (nm) either side of Runway 2 extended centerline, from the intersection of the extended center line and the shore, out
2 nm northeast of the northeast end of Runway 2.

End of an era. Camp One Beach cam to move to new location.

We can’t believe it but the Camp One Beach Cam has been beaming out pictures of this famous spot for 10 years now.

Sail testing and photo shoots have always been a favorite. Then of course there are the many parties and beach gatherings.

Probably the most dynamic shots came when the beach was in it’s maximum erosion phase with trees and debris strewn all over the place.

Also who could forget the last days of rope tree and it’s eventual demise.

But arguably the most popular shots contain a certain beach dog who has over the past 3 years become our mascot and Ray’s very best water buddy…the amazing Sevin.

Without doubt Sevin has captured the hearts of so many of our viewers. He is recognized island wide. People stop us on the beach and ask if it is the famous Sevin. We even had people from Japan stop by our house and tell us how well known Sevin is in their homeland!

Well all good views do come to an end…and this is no exception. Today, Feb 22nd, marks the end of the second Camp One Beach Cam era…..and the beginning of a new one.

To commemorate this event we are going to organize a competition for all our viewers to select the best images from the ten years of Camp One cam. The winners will receive some really cool prizes. The addition of a streaming feed to our original Camp One cam now completes the upgrade to your favorite Maui North Shore camera network.

With the unusually windy and always wavy winter the time could not be better to introduce this new technology. And we think you will agree that the pictures are worth a thousand words…or more!

Sprecks Cam Goes Full HD Streaming!

We are really happy to announce the addition of HD Streaming to the Sprecks Cam.

The Sprecks Cam has always been a great view on the Maui North Shore and with the new super smooth and high res streaming video it is even better. Way better!

We think the quality of the images is technically and aesthetically among the best on the internet. OK so we’re biassed!

New Year…New Cams….More Streaming!

A New Year brings new cams, views and HD Streaming!

You may have noticed that over the last few weeks we have updated the remaining cams to 16:9 aspect HD.

Today we took that move one step further and added HD Streaming to the Camp One (Reef) Cam. Over the next weeks we will add the other cams, Sprecks and C1 Beach, to our streaming menu.

As luck would have it, the pictures from the new Camp One Cam have been brilliant as the huge surf and blue skies have been beautifully captured by our new State of the Art cam and improved streaming technology.

We cetrtainly hope you enjoy the new views and thank you for watching and your support.

As usual…expect more surprises and upgrades to your favorite beach cam site in 2012.

New Sprecks Cam goes on line.

We are very excited to announce the deployment of a new state of the art camera at our Sprecks location. The new cam operates in full 1080i configuration and has a pan tilt zoom function allowing us to aim it at the heart of the action.

As the seasons change we will be able to send out images of the beautiful sun sets, beach front fun and later in the year some great surfing action.

Right now the cam is operating in 5 second mode but in the next couple of months we will be upgrading the feed to support full video streaming….just waiting on Road runner to upgrade the service on Maui.

Meanwhile enjoy the new high resolution images and views offered by this upgrade….and stay tuned for more upgrade news to follow in the next few days!!!

Neil Pryde State Championship concludes Maui Race Series.

The Maui Race Series concludes today with round 5 the Neil Pryde State Championship. – watch it on our Kanaha cam in live streaming video……… If you are on Maui come on down to Kanaha Beach Park and check out the action, meet the sailors or better yet sign up for this fun event.

The Maui Race Series is a series of five windsurfing race events held every summer at Kanaha Park in Maui, Hawaii. Maui typically has strong, dependable trade winds in the summer months, and a year-round population of hard-core windsurfers, including many past, present, and future pros, so the conditions are perfect for slalom sailing and the competition is always very intense.

Quicksilver Cup – Round 4 of the Maui Race Series.

The Maui Race Series continues today with round 4 the Quicksilver Cup – watch it on our Kanaha cam in live streaming video……… If you are on Maui come on down to Kanaha Beach Park and check out the action, meet the sailors or better yet sign up for this fun event.

The start of racing was delayed in the last round, the MFC Open, due to light wind, but eventually all the heats were held in consistent trade winds of 15-20 knots. Age group divisions ran in the morning, and ability level classes after lunch.

Veteran racer and Windsurfing ambassador Phil McGain captured two divisions, Men’s Open and Men’s 40-49, while Yoshie Ishinoda pulled in the women’s open title. McGain won two heats to lead the 40-49 division, and also took two of four heats in the Open competition to win that division for the first time.

In some of the most thrilling racing of the event, Ishinoda, a windsurfing instructor from Zushi, Japan, edged out defending state champion Tamara Bockius of Haiku, Maui. The division went down to the wire with Yoshie pulling in the prize after a sterling sail in the final round, which ended up being the tie breaker. Great stuff!

Other winners included Deniz Bicakci (juniors), Dan Ellis (19-39), Mike Yasak (50-59), Michael Warmuth (60 and over), Matt Daniells (semipro) and Olaf Sutor (expert).

All in all another great day of racing action. If you are on island come on down to Kanaha and take in the sights sounds and personalities of this great slalom series.
