Today I received a message from MSOnlineServices Team stating that in the last 24h they received no directory sync.
So I connected to my server that is running the directory sync and found out that the “Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service” and the “Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Service” was not running. I tried to start them but received the message that there was a logon failure.

Stupid as I am , I changed the password of the account that was bound to the service and tried again. This led to the mentioned eventlog entry:

The server encryption keys could not be accessed.

User Action
Verify that the service account has permissions to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Forefront Identity Manager\2010\Synchronization Service

If the problem persists, run setup and restore the encryption keys from backup.

I then slapped myself for changing the password. But (I think) I solved it.

Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Online Directory Sync\SYNCBUS\Synchronization Service\Bin and start the application “miiskmu”

Choose the option to abandon your key set.

Start the “Directory Sync Configuration” tool and reconfigure your synchronization

After this start your services again (the “Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service” was already started) and start a manual sync

This could lead to the following message in your eventlog:
Eventid: 6126
The management agent “TargetWebService” completed run profile “Delta Confirming Import” with a delta import or delta synchronization step type. The rules configuration has changed since the last full import or full synchronization.

So with the help of the miisclient I started a full sync, a full confirming import and a export.

After this, everything was up and running again.
Use @ your own risk

After some searching on the EC2 Forums I found this post which helped me out.

In short:

1. Open "C:\Program Files\Amazon\Ec2ConfigService\Settings\DnsSuffixSettings.xml"
2. Remove the extra </RegionMapping> tag from line 34
3. Open "C:\Program Files\Amazon\Ec2ConfigService\Settings\config.xml"
4. On line 34, change the state of EC2WindowsActivate plugin from Disabled to Enabled
5. Stop and Start the Ec2Config service
6. Wait couple minutes and then run slui.exe to verify Windows is activated (for core installation use "slmgr.vbs /dli")

Most of you will know that Microsoft released a developer preview of the next version of Windows 8. You can download the ISO it here.

I downloaded the ISO and tried to install it as a Virtual Machine (vmware workstation 8 because vmware v7.1 gave me an error).
During initial startup for install I received the following error:

Windows cannot read the <ProductKey> setting from the unattend answer file

This is because of the fact that VMware is mounting an floppy disk with an autoinst.flp file.

Just disconnect your floppy drive and try again.

When you install SQL server 2008 R2 on Windows 7 Dutch, it is possible you will receive the following error during the “setup support rules” phase: Performance counter registry hive consistency

The solution was found here: http://bertvanvreumingen.blogspot.com/2010/11/performance-counter-registry-hive.html

In short:

export the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\009

Edit the registry file you just created and change the value 009 to 013, resulting in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\013

Merge the registry file and re-run the “setup support rules”
