Students lead hectic, internet-centric lives. Luckily, adding a few Google Chrome extensions can make your day go more smoothly and help you become more productive. Extensions basically work like an app that’s embedded into the code of your internet browser, so they’re easier to access than the 50 apps you’ve likely installed.

StayFocusd:
Sometimes time slips by when you’re attempting to study, and before the night is over you know everything about your best friend from elementary school’s wedding and who she’s still friends with on Facebook, and absolutely nothing about 18th century politics.
StayFocusd will keep track of the time you’ve spent on a domain and let you know when you’ve spent 10 minutes on it. It can even block sites and not allow you access to them if you find that you’re spending too much time on CNN and not enough time hitting the books.
It’s great for people who do a lot of work online or are working on online degrees. The more you access the internet, the more helpful this tool becomes.

Google Dictionary:
The Google Dictionary extension allows you to highlight words and phrases and view the definition in a pop-up bubble underneath your cursor. When combined with Google’s selection of scholarly articles, the Dictionary tool is unstoppable.
Research will take a lot less time if you’re able to understand a topic fully before attempting to write about it. The dictionary has had a timestamp on it since the dawn of the internet, and it looks like Google will be the one to retire its use for students. Sites like dictionary.com have been around for a while, but the ability to define words on-page is what will set Google Dictionary apart.

Mail Checker Plus:
Students often wrack up an alarming number of Gmail addresses. They need one for personal use, one for their resume, and another one for all of their spammy store alerts. Mail Checker Plus will send a notification for each new piece of mail that comes in any Gmail address you add and give you the option to delete, archive, save or simply open a message from the toolbar.

HappyBirthday:
Though other apps help with time management, this one pulls double duty and also looks out for your social standing.

LastPass works by saving data locally, so it’s not sending your sensitive information out into cyberspace where it could be hacked into. Google Chrome will also store your login information, but it’s laughably easy for someone who has access to your computer to find all of your passwords. They simply have a button that says “show passwords,” and it’s not an option that can be disabled.

As soon as tablets hit the markets people went crazy over them. It started with people buying them for personal use and then quickly infiltrated businesses as well, making them increasingly the go-to technology and replacing laptops. And with good reason…

1. Even more portable
Laptops have long been the sole computer option when it comes to travelling, but tablets are even more portable than their laptop counterparts. No matter how small the laptop gets, it can’t compete with the slim design of the tablets that makes them easier to fit into bags or carrying cases and lighter to carry around – two major pluses in any circumstance.

2. Cheaper
Good laptops aren’t cheap, and the better the laptop the higher the price. Then you have to buy software to make sure that it’s protected and purchase a warranty just in case anything happens to it. Conversely, tablets are all under $1,000 for a top of the line experience that rivals that of the top laptops.

3. Battery life
There is nothing more frustrating than being halfway through an important project and your laptop battery suddenly dying, which is a common occurrence after a couple hours use. Tablets, on the other hand, hold a much better battery charge and will generally last a full day, even while in use.

4. Security
Laptops (and computers in general) suffer from a wide range of virus attacks that leave you constantly needing to update the computer’s security. Tablets, on the other hand, don’t have the same exposure to these types of threats, making them a safer bet than the standard computer.

Downloading an app to a tablet is done with a simple swipe of your finger across the screen – and most of the time can be done for free or for a minimal charge. Putting new software on your computer, on the other hand, is usually pricey and not nearly as fast as downloading a new app.

While tablets still have a ways to go before they completely eliminate the laptop, they are definitely well on their way. You just can’t compete with all of the different perks they have to offer, and as the technology continues to improve it’s likely that tablet sales will continue to soar and laptop sales will continue to drop.

Voice: More a Service than a Protocol

The widespread adoption of IP protocol has transformed the way businesses communicate, both internally and externally. But the poor service delivered by the increasing number of ‘fly by night’ VoIP service providers is tarnishing the reputation of the industry.

As well as this, there are several arguments to suggest that VoIP is a potentially dangerous security environment, and that many users do not fully understand the risks involved with Internet telephony.

There is no denying that the Internet isn't without its security holes. However, to assume that VoIP is altogether unsafe is extremely short-sighted.

Part of dispelling the doubts around VoIP comes down to simple education. Firstly, it’s worth remembering that VoIP does not mean ‘Voice over the Internet’, it means ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’ - it’s a technology that can be delivered insecurely over the Internet, or securely over a private Cloud. So to avoid potential security issues, start by avoiding any VoIP provider who only uses the Internet.

What is “Voice”?

When providers talk about providing a “voice” service, they’re talking about much more than just a protocol like VoIP. A voice service is a business-critical system that delivers a service by embracing a range of technologies, including digital and analogue as well as IP. It is a service that affects every employee in any given organisation.

Because voice services embrace a variety of technologies, any security concerns should be considered across all areas of the service. With VoIP, there is a danger that if viewed solely from a network perspective, other important areas may be overlooked.

Although the network may be secure, there are other elements of the voice service to consider, such as resilience, change management, call fraud and availability, etc. While a secure network is essential, ignoring other components of the service could result in unwanted downtime, or even worse, security holes.

It is very important that these concerns are taken seriously, as a secure network alone will not protect an organisation from poor systems monitoring or change management. Often human error is to blame for these issues, with a recent survey suggesting that 80 percent of all unplanned downtime is self-inflicted.

Provider checklist

To help avoid network issues, it pays to work with an experienced business IP telephony service provider to manage your Voice system. To help inform your decision, ask them the following;

Do they host their Voice services on a 24/7 managed MPLS network, or are they just an Internet VoIP provider?
How good, or bad, is their track record? Be sure to follow up references and case studies.
Do they have operational experience of running a phone service? More than just ‘supply and fit’?
Are they more than just a website? Can you visit their facilities? If the provider offers a managed service, request a tour of the site. How they protect against physical security threats is also a very important consideration.

Choosing a reliable and trustworthy service provider is a critical decision for any business. Make sure that your provider offers everything you need to ensure security and continuity at all times.

Walgreen’s & Express Scripts’ Contract Expires: Important things you should know and how you should be

For the past year, Walgreens has negotiated with Express Scripts for a new contract to continue as part of its pharmacy provider network. Those negotiations were unsuccessful, and the contract expired on Dec. 31. As a result, Walgreens is no longer part of Express Scripts’ pharmacy provider network as of Jan. 1, 2012. This includes all Walgreens pharmacies nationwide and Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area.

Walgreens is one of the largest pharmacy chains, and Express Scripts is one of the largest prescription middle-men. When Walgreens and Express Scripts cannot work together, customers like you and I suffer. Customers may have to drive further for prescriptions refills and lose the convenience of the many Walgreens 24-hour and drive thru pharmacies. If the customers were going to see lower costs, this might make sense, but that is not the case. Many customers who have developed relationships with their pharmacists now find themselves having to find a new pharmacy and therefore, a new pharmacist to trust.

You might be wondering how this happened and I think it’s important to understand that. The cause of Walgreens being removed from the Express Scripts network all boiled down to contract negotiations. While Walgreens offered to hold rates for the new contract, Express Scripts' response was to propose to slash Walgreens reimbursement rates below the industry average. As if all of this were not bad enough, Express Scripts also refused to negotiate with Walgreens for those customers in the US Military. Full details can be found in the press release.

Only patients with certain prescription insurance plans managed by Express Scripts are impacted. Walgreens is well aware of the affect that this is having on their customers. They are trying to help by offering a discount on their Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. Walgreens wants to let all its customers know that they no longer will work with a middle man, and that they care about their communities. Right now you can sign up for its Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens at a special discounted rate.

Education Taps Social Media in a Digital Age

The eruption of both social media sites and their popularity has coincided with another digital phenomenon. Undergrads are now taking some or all of their courses online, and schools are slowly but surely adapting their instruction modes to blend with their students’ communication habits. One of the more promising marriages of social media and instruction is the targeted delivery of content and resources through audio-visual chat features, making the pursuit of a bachelor degree a more personal, collaborative process. Here are a few examples of how social media is shaping the college experience and growing the value of social media as an accepted part of everyday interaction.

Google+

Since its full release in early summer, Google+ has established itself as a competitor, if not alternative to Facebook. While the two have several comparable features, Google+ arguably has the better audio-visual component, Hangouts. With this element, up to ten Google+ users can chat simultaneously. Hangouts is being employed for useful educational applications like study sessions, small group activities, class projects and the introduction of outside expertise.
Circles, the drag-n-drop grouping aspect of Google+, allows for the flexible grouping of students necessary for differentiation. By placing contacts in multiple circles and moving contacts out of circles, instructors can tailor content based upon user ability, speed or interest.

Facebook

Facebook, the dominant social media site with over 800 million users and near universal penetration of the college student population, has several benefits for its use in college classes. Predating Google+ Circles, Facebook has had Lists—groupings of Friend contacts by which you can restrict content to only certain recipients—for a couple of years. It wasn’t until Circles received great reviews that Facebook promoted the little known feature to users, easing the way users could assign Friends to particular Lists. The educational uses are identical to those of Google+, and for many students, the greater familiarity with Facebook than Google+ may make this a better option if you don’t plan on many face-to-face chats.
Like Google+, Facebook does allow users to hold audio-visual chats. Last year, Facebook teamed up with Skype to allow Friends to chat with one another. Like Hangouts, Facebook’s option to use Skype within the platform allows for collaboration.

Social Media and Calculators

If you want to look at progress in perspective, compare social media and calculators in education. Today, the widespread acceptance of social media in colleges and many secondary schools occurred much faster than other technologies of the past. When the calculator became widely accessible for students, it took years before many instructors even allowed them in the classroom, this despite early evidence that student use of calculators improved learning.
By tapping into the tools already embraced by students, the thoughtful application of Facebook, Skype and Google+ only scratch the surface of the value social media has in just this one industry. According to the current statistic report from StatCounter.com in which they have compared the statistic of Top Five Operating Systems from September 2010 till October 2011, OS includes Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Mac OSX and Linux and its really strange for me to know the result as compare to my previous report.

Let's talk a moment about portability versus mobility. These aren't one in the same, and if that has you scratching your head, follow along, it will make sense in a moment. A Zenbook is mobile. So is your typical 15.6-inch notebook, and even some 17-inch systems. But there's a line in the sand between notebooks and desktop replacements, and once you cross it, your system is no longer mobile, it's portable.

The P180HM weighs upwards of 12 pounds, which is too heavy to toss into your bag on a whim or open up in a coffee shop and blend in inconspicuously with the other patrons. No, you carefully close up the P180HM, lift with two hands, and pack it neatly into your oversized laptop bag that's big enough to accommodate an 18.4-inch notebook. When you take it out at Starbucks, you mark off your area with yellow tape, tell everyone to stand back, and then place it on the coffee table with a thud. Your latte sits on the floor next to your foot, because there isn't room for it on the table, and because the P180HM would probably guzzle it up anyway. And you better be sure you're near a power source, there's no such thing as all-day computing on a desktop replacement.

Unfortunately, there's no analogue pad here, so it's not quite on par with its PlayStation Certified competition, but it will hold hands over Bluetooth with any Googlefied phones running Froyo and up.

The unreleased peripheral includes a 250mAh battery, letting you bash away with those sore thumbs for up to nine hours at a time, your phone's charge willing. There's no official word on just when you can expect this game pad to make its market debut, but if you're really eager, head on over to the source to sign up for launch notifications.

First impressions

For now, I have just the one controller but I'm suitably impressed. You can use the Gametel with an Android tablet too, but obviously you won't be able to clamp it on.

To become a huge success, the Gametel needs to become available on the high street, or even come bundled with a new phone, but there's no denying the fact that some games border on unplayable with a touchscreen alone. If you decided against the Xperia Play, but still want to play more than the most casual games, here's a viable alternative.

The Gametel controller is set to go on sale in time for Christmas with a suggested retail price of £49.95 and it seems like the perfect gift idea for someone who is into gaming, even if that someone is in fact yourself.
