HOUR 2 THE SHOWCASE// Coefficient is a mysterious London producer and DJ. He has had releases on Labrynth of Portugal and the Italian M_Rec Ltd. What little details there are surrounding Coefficient amount to: that he began the project in 2006 and with michaelangelo of Labrynth produces as Telesthesia (exclusively vinyl only released offbeat techno); and that he describes his music as being dark, hypnotic, industrial and experimental techno.

February has been and gone. Here’s my selection of tracks I’ve been enjoying just that little bit more than others. As usual, no particular order, other than that in which they are on the chart mix.

Another track from Delsin made this month’s as did another remix of a thatboytim track, this time from Ed Devane. It’s 1 of the 4 tracks on the new free EP from Digital Distortions. Add to that another Myuzyk released track from their new hip-hop comp: Twisting the Frame 2 (free netlabel release don’t ya know). We’ve got an unofficial remix of a King Cannibal track (which so impressed Mr Cannibal, he gave it his blessing), Gunjack in his awesome Lester Diamond guise, as well as that fantastic Emptyset track; Completely Gone (everything they’ve done has been superb).

1. Eero Johannes – Lipton Service Boy
His brilliant self-titled album still warms my heart and soul. If I were Madonna I would produce my next album with him.

2. Postapocalyps Pop – Moon Gopher (Stak Etop remix)
This one comes from secret laboratories of St. Petersburg. Remixed by a hot Finnish techno freak Stak Etop, this track will make your turntable dance. The record will be released on Russian-Techno.com / Tenkale labels this spring! Don’t miss!

3. Paul Birken – Dry Heave
Paul rocks as usual – smart ‘alien creature talking’ sounds, funky rhythm. I like the way it builds!

4. Neonicle – Hz
Russian electro geek from St. Petersburg made me cry when I first heard it. It’s simply beautiful on Russian-Techno.com soon!

5. Antihifi – United States of Cocaine
French dubstep running at about 160bpm, very smart and moody. Draws crawling creatures in the dark.

6. Jah Warrior presents Hughie Izachaar – Deliverance Dub
Big track! Fits into any set as a freshener. Just between techno and dub. I’m not too deep into all that dub thing but this one made me curious!

7. Mesak – Back to the Future
Nice track that reanimates any dancefloor. Classic, just love it!

8. 16 bit – Ford Fiesta
It makes me smile every time I turn in on, caravan is immortal!

9. Scratch D – Rise
Electro overlord has risen! Nice and restless electro track!

10. Akio Milan Paak – Gulcia
Wicked mid-90s techno as I love it. Japan touch, a bit experimental. I’m happy to own this record ;)

Described as the The Godfather’ of the Russian techno scene – Oleg Azelitsky aka DJ Slon from St. Petersburg put together this mix for the netlabel and Techno portal Russian Techno.com. Run by MANTIS showcased producer and artist Vadz. (a great podcast and netlabel)

Oleg is talented in many areas of art, he recently wrote a book and now finishes another one, but he earned his main reputation of course in dj’ing, and party-making. His company ‘Underground Experience‘ brings quaility to the dancefloor since the early 90’s. This set contains fresh modern-sounding tunes as well as some nostalgic old-school flashbacks. So, if you’re new to the whole techno thing – this one is a good point to start exploring from. And if you’re a veteran, i’m sure you smile by the end of his set. Techno as it should be, here and now.

3D (Massive Attack) presents – Rare As Fuck Promo Mix

Discovered over on the Meatskull blog, this is one is exactly what the title suggests. Namely a very rare recording of a mix tape by Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja aka 3D. This one is a keeper.

This disc is one of the rarest Massive Attack promo discs in existence. There were only 200 copies produced and each is numbered. This disc was only given out free to the first 200 patrons of the Nocturne club in Bristol on the night of the 12th March 2002. It was the third in the series of such very limited releases from Nocturne to feature exclusive one track mixes from well-known DJ’s and musicians from Bristol. This particular one was mixed by 3D and offers a interesting look at some of his favourite songs over the years and a few, what were at the time, exclusive Massive Attack tracks…via A North Country Bhoy

Chrissy Murderbot’s Year of Mixtapes Week 24: Ghettotech

This week I’ve got a tape of Ghettotech, which for you uninitiated folks is a genre of uptempo urban dance music we have here in the Midwest. The music (and the name “ghettotech” itself) originated in Detroit, and is essentially sped-up Detroit techno with a heavy dose of Miami bass music and Chicago ghetto house influence. It’s fast, it’s bass-heavy, it’s got a lot of dirty words—it’s similar to Juke, but there are some key differences that a lot of people overlook: ghettotech tends to stick to either four-on-the-floor style drum patterns or traditional Miami bass electro drum patterns, whereas juke is a lot more all over the place rhythmically; ghettotech makes a lot less use of the tom tom drum as a melodic instrument; and ghettotech tends to be “techier” or more futuristic sounding, whereas juke has a lot more of a pronounced soul, hip hop, and R&B influence. The last few years have seen a lot of music press types failing to understand this distinction, so take note. Anyway, here’s the tape!

HOUR 2: THE SHOWCASE// Mad EP is Matthew Peters, Iowa native (formerly based in New York, Chicago & Montreal) and recent UK transplant, with a vast and impressive background in electronic and classical music. Peters brings his talents to bear on Mad EP productions in such a way that the end results are diverse and unclassifiable, calmly defying expectations as he skims through every imaginable genre to reach the outer limits of a territory that is indisputably his own.

Peters has been making his own music, variously described as electronic, alternative hip-hop, breakbeat, avant jazz, classical, sample-mania, and consistently unpredictable, for the past ten years in various contexts. His performances have been experienced in clubs, squats, restaurants, art galleries, concert halls, roof tops, radio studios, theatres, and festivals all over North America and Europe. He has also joined the Sub.FM ranks, and has a monthly show called “Tasty Cyanide Radio” – which goes beyond dubstep & garage and features all bass-centric music. In under a year, his playlists have been hailed as uniquely creative and innovative, and have a cult following to match.

Peters is also the consummate collaborative musician. His releases are full of guest appearances by artists with a deep respect his unparalleled musicality: Shadow Huntaz, Puppetmastaz, Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer), Math Head, Si Begg, Aaron Spectre, Mochipet, End, DJ Grandtheft, jazz trumpeter David Young, percussionist Bryce Beverlin II, and more. Venetian Snares & Leafcutter John both requested him to appear as a cellist on their albums and Peters is often in demand as a remixer, delivering unexpected, yet mind-blowing results.

Kicking of the new year and new decade 2 weeks later than originally planned, I’ll be sure to make up for it. For our 53rd and the 1st showcase of the new decade I’m very happy to present Full Spektrum.

HOUR 2: THE SHOWCASE// South London based producer Full Spektrum has been making music since around 2003. A bit of an old skool raver, he got into Hardcore and Jungle around ’92-‘93. Later producing his own music, a progression through D&B and garage eventually led to Full Spektrum being introduced to the ever varying sounds of Dubstep.

The deep and versatile nature of the music suited his own productions, and it wasn’t long before he was fusing the sounds of Dubstep and Old Skool with his own trademark rolling breaks. He has received a lot of support from other producers and DJ’s in the scene including Elemental, Warlock, Blackmass Plastics, Noiz, ID, Threnody, Rob Booth and the Urban Graffiti crew. With releases currently out on labels Bankai, UK Trends, Militant Science and Urban Scrumping and forthcoming tracks on Furioso and Mata-Syn, Full Spektrum is a producer with a big sound.

Wrongtom – Old Ghosts

One of my favourite netlabels is back on the release schedule after a few quiet months. Kicking off 2010 is Wrongtom’s Old Ghosts.

Says Wrongtom of the project: “It’s nothing fancy, simply a bunch of old tracks recorded between 1999 and 2004. Most weren’t released, some weren’t intended to be released, and no doubt some people are probably wondering why I’m bothering to release them now. Put simply I gave them a listen back and in hindsight I quite like them, despite some of them needing a better mixdown if I still had the parts. There’s still a variety of styles covered from synth heavy hip hop instrumentals to free jazz workouts and even a raga of sorts, with the unlikely sounding combination of me on tablas and Steve Kemp from Hard-Fi on drums”.

Rico Püstel – Islescape [tube188]

Another Found Sound, and another Test Tube release. These guys release some mighty lovely sound.

Rico Püstel (of tube167 fame) returns with a full album this time. ‘Islescape’ was written in 2003 when Rico was only sixteen years old, and he thought that the recordings had been thrown away in some garbage dump or whatever ever since, but, back in December 2008 Rico found a copy of the original recordings and instead of tossing them out (again) for being such academic or primitive compositions, he decided to remaster them in light of what he had accomplished as both composer and producer since then. The result is this strangely nostalgic album of what seems to be deep and melodic nineties-flavored techno.

phoke61 : LaptopBattle Dresden Compilation 2009

Phonocake were showcased on the 44th show and provided a frankly stunning presentation of deep IDM, glitch and electronica from their label. Their latest release, phoke61, LaptopBattle Dresden Comp 2009, continues this high standard of sound.

At October 15th in 2009 the first LaptopBattle Dresden took place in the “Altes Wettbüro”, cooperatively organized by the record label Suburban Trash and the crew from Double D Town. The six participating artists came with 4 tracks each to the battle.

A new remix package of the track “United Groove” by L-Vis 1990 has just been released by the folk over at Mad Decent. With remixes from Buraka Som Sistema, M.J. Cole, Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team, Cosmin TRG and Baobinga & ID. They also got one from Kingdom, which they’ve decided to give away.

King Cannibal – Virgo (Canblaster remix + dub)

Massive shouts going out to the one like Cannibal for endorsing this remix and dub from Canblaster. Quite possibly my favourite Found Sound from this week.

Hot new French producer Canblaster was kind enough to put together a remix of Virgo and then allow us to share it with you.

Taking the original’s dancehallisms and pushing them in to a peak time floor filler i was really impressed by this especially considering he did this without any individual parts from myself, instead just inspired by hearing the track, he ripped apart the full mix and spun it in to something shiny and new. Jacking beats, low 808 subs and sharp claps this hits me at a place somewhere between Modeselektor and Sinden. Anyone who has come see one of my shows recently would have definitely heard this one.

Back to my roots. Mostly old school Birmingham techno from the likes of Surgeon, Regis, Female, but also a few other bits that match the vibe. Hats off to the House of God in Birmingham where it all began! Thanks to everyone who came along to The Drome in Second Life or listened in to the live audio stream..

The House of God was the first place I ever went clubbing, first place I ever heard techno over a big soundsystem. I can safely say I’ve never been the same since! I’ve always loved the visceral machine music that came out of Birmingham from producers like Surgeon, Regis and Female. It’s a David Cronenburg/HR Giger style of industrial rhythms where the machines have organic organs that spill out. Evocative, gut-wrenching and euphoric.

Olaf is a regular DJ in the online virtual world of Second Life (indeed it was he who helped to get the MANTIS show syndicated in there). This is great mix, not only filled with some superb cuts and tracks, but mixed and constructed like a pro. This will be getting repeat listens at the darkfloor studios. My only gripe is Olaf is one of those types who writes his tracklists track then artist, how and why people do this is a mystery, it’s unnatural haha. Apart from that it’s a winner. Don’t sleep on this.

As the title suggests, back on November 27th I played at a warehouse party in Hackney, well Hackney Wick. This is the recording of my set. Coming in at just shy of 90minutes and thundering along at a steady 140bpm it’s rammed full of, in my humble opinion, some awesome rolling, heavy bass licked tracks. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed mixing it. It was a great night, with some great sets from Jerome Hill, Dirty Bass, and Mr. Seavers vs Capt. Chaos.
