 Mimi, a 5 year old Shih-Tzu belonging to the family of American Idol Karen Rodriguez, has been missing since January 5th and suffers from poor health. Community residents are being asked for help in reuniting Mimi with her family.

"American Idol" family seeks missing dog

The local family members of former Season 10 "American Idol" contestant Karen Rodriguez, including her mother Elvira Rodriguez, and younger sister, Karol, are seeking the community's help in locating their missing dog.

Mimi, the family's 5 year old Shih-Tzu, has been missing since January 5th, when she disappeared near 171st Street and St. Nicholas Avenue around 8 pm in the evening.

"We are distraught," says mother Elvira, who has sought assistance from neighbors and the local police precinct, and has distributed flyers throughout the neighborhood.

Mimi is a sensitive dog and requires special medical treatment, as she daily takes medicine for a heart condition and other ailments.

Karina Aybar-Jacobs is director of the Nuevo Amanecer program at the Dominican Women's Development Center (DWDC), which offers counseling and support services to women and children suffering domestic abuse. The program's funding has been cut; the transportation fare women use to get to and from DWDC is needed.

$4.50 may be just enough to buy a quick meal, or a large cup of coffee, but at the Dominican Women's Development Center (DWDC), $4.50 saves and changes lives.

The DWDC is in dire need of funding in order to continue to serve as a lifeline for women and families from northern Manhattan and the Bronx suffering from domestic violence and other abuse.

Es posible que $4.50 sólo sea suficiente para una comida rápida, o una taza de café, pero en el DWDC (Centro para el Desarrollo de la Mujer Dominicana), $4.50 salva y transforma vidas.

El DWDC está en extrema necesidad de financiamiento a fin de continuar sirviendo como línea de vida para mujeres y familias de Norte de Manhattan y el Bronx quienes sufren de violencia doméstica y otros abusos.

Peter Anderson leads tours through of the wilds of northern Manhattan and the Bronx, exploring the least urban parts of the city.

His Meetup group, Northern Manhattan Outside, features weekend walks through both Manhattan and the Bronx.

"This spot was once a vacant lot," said Nina DeMartini-Day, the land-owner of the property. "Now there are 300 jobs here."

There's a new scent wafting through the air all about 125th St. and Lexington Avenue: the smell of buttery syrup and pancakes.

Only the third International House of Pancakes restaurant (better known as IHOP), in Manhattan, and the second in Harlem, opened last Mon., Jan. 30th with a "VIP breakfast" that included local elected officials, the heads of community organizations and business groups, and major players in the Harlem neighborhood.

La pasada semana, Harlem inauguró su segundo restaurante International House of Pancakes en la calle 125 y la Avenida Lexington—el tercero en todo Manhattan.

Hay un nuevo aroma a comida en el aire cerca de la calle 125 y la Avenida Lexington: el aroma de melasas, mantequilla y panqueques.

Ilana Dunner has taken the reins as new Executive Director at Riverstone Senior Life Services, after the 23-year tenure of Rebecca Carel. "We're looking forward to bringing more and more people into the center," says Dunner.

Ilana Dunner has taken the reins as new Executive Director at Riverstone Senior Life Services, formerly Fort Washington Houses Services for the Elderly.

The usual programming has continued, and a plan for new services and programming is just beginning to take shape.

"I'm starting to identify some gaps in services we may be able to provide," said Dunner of her plans for the direction of the senior services center. "We're going to be able to have more programming here, health and recreation programming for sure."

Dunner also plans to introduce a diabetes intervention to address the high incidence of diabetes in the neighborhood. The intervention will include educational programs and services.
