(If you do not already receive Mr. Watson’s newsletter, you should. It is must reading for any magician or lover of magical things. Visit his site and sign-up today by going here).

In addition to the items from the Professor and Mr. Cervon, Gabe Fajuri has included additional “rare books, apparatus and ephemera.” You can check out the on-line catalog here.

The auction will be live and held in Chicago but accessible to participants around the world via the internets. Make sure you visit http://www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/20344 to register and gain approval to participate well-before the auction day.

The catalog of items up for sale is better than any wish book we can recall. Amazing things, interesting magic, incredible collections of props and manuscripts are all up for bid.

Bruce Cervon was not only the essential author of all things Dai Vernon, he was also an accomplished magician, performer, actor, and lecturer. After his passing in 2007, his wife published the now famous Castle Notebooks, called by some the “Holy Grail” of magic texts.

Of particular interest to the Inside Magic Editorial Board is a small glass bottle identified as Dai Vernon’s “Ashes.” We know from reading Karl Johnson’s extraordinary biography, The Magician and the Cardsharp: The Search for America’s Greatest Sleight-of-Hand Artist, The Professor was cremated and his ashes were brought to The Magic Castle.

Could this be a bottle containing the real remains of Dai Vernon?

No. No, it’s not. Close, though.

The auction catalog describes the item as:

Dai Vernon’s “Ashes.” Small bottle with cork stopper and color label bearing a silhouette of Dai Vernon and half-full of what the label describes as, “Guaranteed to have possibly come from the cigars of Dai Vernon, lovingly known as “The Professor.”/Collected from the upholstery of the love seats outside the Close Up Gallery of The Magic Castle between 1968 – 1987.” A decided novelty. Good condition.

It is a very good thing Dai Vernon smoked cigars rather than chewed tobacco. As witnessed by our collection of spittoon drainings from the Thurston and Carter touring shows, evaporation is the constant foe of a diligent body fluid curator.

Check out the auction, get registered and approved. This looks to be a great opportunity for collectors, scholars, and working magicians alike.

Additionally, Inside Magic welcomes correspondence from all readers on subjects related to articles in this journal or other magic-related subjects.

Please note: if you submitted an article for publication between April 25, 1998 and June 14, 2001, you may be entitled to compensation from a settlement currently under consideration by the Honorable Kimba Woods for the Southern District of New York in the class action Leticia Accensia v. Inside Magic, Ltd (A Company Organized Under the Laws of Belize), SDCiv 2003CA1992AA.

While Judge Woods has not yet certified the alleged class for purposes of trial, there has been a Consolidated Discovery Order entered and settlement discussions in lieu of potential class certification are contemplated.

In the August 12, 2002 edition of Inside Magic, Oakland magician Jerry Hirschorn was profiled for his ability to perform a “Six-Card Repeat effect in a close-up environment.” The article noted Mr. Hirschorn could perform the card trick on a table during his work at a local restaurant and “instantly reset.”

Mr. Hirschorn’s “reset” was not instant but because the effect goes on for hours, he simply continues the routine as he moves from table to table. We regret the error. We also morn the passing of Mr. Hirschorn and his brothers in a recent accident but celebrate the recent birth of triplets by his mother, Mrs. Gail White.

Dear Inside Magic:

When I am buying a thumb tip, can I get it sized to my thumb? Also, how can I find one that looks like my skin color?

Adrian Owen, Lexington, KY

Hi Adrian:

We take it you are new to the world of magic from the substance of your question. Like the existence of gravity or the inevitability of a wrong order when using a McDonald’s drive-through window, the use of a thumb tip is an exercise in faith.

You have no doubt heard from more senior magicians that you could wear a thumb tip painted bright red but if you used it correctly, your audience would never notice it. That is true. Too much emphasis is placed on matching the skin color of the tip for fear of detection.

Harry Blackstone, Sr. once tried an experiment where he performed a complete show with a bright red thumb tip in place. He mentioned to magicians later that no one noticed. While historians tend to discount this story’s significance, it has meaning for us today.

(Jim Steinmeyer surveyed the literature concerning Mr. Blackstone’s claim in his critically acclaimed monograph, What’s That On Your Thumb? No, The Other Thumb! An Examination of Thumb Tip Use throughout the History of Magic, (New York: Scribner’s 1987). He noted the following criticisms:

1) Blackstone did not perform any effect during his show in which the thumb tip could be used;

2) Blackstone did not solicit observations from his audience regarding his use or non-use of the utility device;

3) this show was the same show for which Mr. Blackstone received well-deserved praise for safely escorting the entire audience from the theater to safety after he was informed the backstage area was engulfed in flames;

4) Blackstone was wearing, as was his custom, white kid skin gloves over the thumb tip;

5) this particular show was a benefit for the local school for the blind; and

6) the thumb tip in question matched exactly the nail polish he used on every other finger (and, say some scholars, toenails)).

We have found the use of the thumb tip to be an unnerving experience. We are so sure we will be caught either hiding items in, or slipping items from the device that we no longer use it except during our magic shows.

We note the space allotted by the gimmick is rarely sufficient to shoplift anything of value or to secret any contraband across an international border.

Dai Vernon once commented that just as a magician should not be considered professional until he had performed 25 times on stage, You should not use a thumb tip until your liver failure has advanced sufficiently to make your skin yellow, like the tip.

The Vernon Chronicles, Vol. 2, Bruce Cervon (Los Angeles: Magic Press 1968) pp 114-113.

Dear Mr. Magico:

Perhaps you can settle an argument I have with my wife. She says Doug Henning was from Canada and I insist, correctly?, he was from Winnipeg. We have a steak dinner riding on this, so your answer will be appreciated.

Kyle Farnsworth, Santa Rosa CA

Dear Mr. Farnsworth:

Ironically, you are both right! Winnipeg was indeed the hometown of the late magic icon that single-handedly brought a renaissance to magic during the 1970s. And Winnipeg is located in Manitoba, a province in Canada.

We don’t promote gambling or encourage the habit responsible for the loss of much of the Hardy Family fortunes, but at the same time we know how great a feeling it is to win a bet against your life-mate for a steak dinner essentially paid for out of the household budget anyway.

You don’t mention in your email whether you and your wife are cousins or some how genetically incapable of understanding the concept of wagering (e.g., you should bet for something you don’t already have), or the interesting complexities of geographical designations (e.g., “a city is a part of a state (or province), which is in turn part of a country”).

We also wonder where you thought Winnipeg was located if not in Canada. Of course, we could ask why your beloved seemed so sure Winnipeg was not the name of some location within the rather large and well-known country we call Canada.

It is so hard to find one’s perfect match in this world, and we rejoice in the belief that you have both found each other.

Mr. So Called Inside Magic:

Who died and left you in charge of magic?

You think you know everything and that everything you write is so clever and witty and relevant.

Does it bother you ever to think there are some who think you are not funny, not clever, and irrelevant?

Should the whole world of magic just be some kind of buffet for you to stick your fat nose into for laughs?

Don’t you ever take anything seriously?

Who ever told you were funny?

Because you are not!

Borusan “Boris” Pendergast, Live Oak FL

Dear Mr. Pendergast:

Your question(s) are significant and deserve a well-considered response.

You initially ask who left us in charge. That’s kind of an interesting story.

Following the fall of the Ottoman Empire, 17 High Priests of Magic went into exile in a small town in the south of France.

Their hopes for a revival of the once great empire were dashed at the end of the World War I.

Four of the High Priests – Danzo Llomas, Petri Dansk, Vlad Willman, and Oscar Dreveneux — were able to escape from the French town during World War II and made safe passage to Portugal and eventually on to Oak Park, Illinois.

They kept their secrets and took on the lifestyle befitting older foreign gentlemen in a small Midwestern town.

Priests Llomas and Willman were successful as investors in what would later become McDonalds, then based in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Priest Dansk was killed in an accidental (?) fall from an elevated train platform at the Lake Street El platform in Chicago’s Loop district.

In 1974, Priest Dreveneux was the sole remaining High Priest of the Ottoman Empire and was stricken with what we now know to be bacterial meningitis.

The prospect for surviving the illness was slim — he had received antibiotics too late — and he called for his trusted ward, Don Timo.

Don Timo was the name given to young Tom Hardy IV (your author) by the High Priests. Although he came from a long-line of magic performers, he was a commoner in the scheme of magic.

He practiced daily and performed menial tasks for the aging High Priests including laundry, cleaning, spittle control, waxing, and undergarment pressing and cleaning (ironically, in that order).

On his death bed, High Priest Dreveneux called his trusted Don Timo to his quarters. “Don Timo, you will be the successor to the High Priesthood of the Otto . . .” he died before he completed the sentence.

While detractors have suggested this incomplete statement cannot be the basis for our claim to royalty, we think it is sufficient to at least permit our putting on of airs.

As for the humor, we test market every line in our stories with panels of magic readers and non-magic readers and magic non-readers. If the line reads well, we use it.

If it doesn’t, we still use it but attribute it to someone we dislike.

Thanks for your questions.

While you may have meant them as an insult, we don’t take them that way. We are above the name-calling and sniping that often accompanies the less-than-civil debate between magicians.

As you have noted, our humor is more sophisticated, less crass.

In fact, we said that exact same thing when we were with your mother last night! We couldn’t help but be with her, though.

She’s so large, her gravitational force pulled us out of the drive-up window and on to her structurally compromised moped. That’s because she’s fat and she drives a moped!

(http://www.pauldaniels.co.uk/blog/) The Sun of UK picked it up and ran with the story. That makes us the second news organization to share Mr. Daniels’ account of the incident in his own, humorous way.

We are glad to hear he is alright. We were also amazed to read that he is 71. He seems to have more energy and passion for the art than folks half his age.

The festivities went on and all was well, until yesterday morning that is, when I awoke at about 6.30am to find that I had a pain in my chest.

You read about these things of course, so the first thought was ‘Is this what a heart attack feels like?’ I guess you don’t know unless you’ve had one.

I waited until 8am before calling the local surgery who said they could fit me in about 10.30am. I thought that might be a bit too late, because, being a man, I already knew I was at death’s door, so they changed it to 8.50am.

I snuck out of the house and went to see the doctor.

After some questions I was put into the nurse’s room for the same questions and tests and suddenly I am in the back of an ambulance.

I must say that the doctor, the nurse and the ambulance crew were all brilliant and I was in the Royal Berkshire in no time at all.

By now Debbie had joined me and sat watching it all happening.

By now of course I was bored so I started to create comic answers to the questions and Debbie kept on ruining that by telling them the truth. I was connected up to loads of gadgets and now I knew it was really serious because I know how painful it is to pull them damn sticky pads off again.

Blood tests, ECGs, pills, needles went on and on.

They scanned my heart and showed me the scan pictures. Ah . . . it wasn’t a heart attack . . . I was pregnant, well, that’s what it looked like.

It turned out my heart is slightly enlarged. Big Hearted Daniels that’s me, and now they want me to have my arteries checked to see if there is any blocking because the scan doesn’t show that stuff.

They have told me that they will give me a local anaesthetic to check for angina because they are still not sure whether it is a heart problem or the coq au vin from the night before.

The good news is that I didn’t have a heart attack. Lucky me.

We just heard from Norm Nielsen that John Booth passed away last Wednesday.

In January when we were in California, Bill McIlhany and his wife drove us to see John and his daughter. We met Dr Ragatz there and we all went out for lunch. John ate well and he even had a desert, somebody said he loved deserts. He was in very high spirits that day.

John Booth and John Calvert has been friends for many many years. They are both Leos and John Booth is one year younger than John Calvert. Their birthdays are within a few days apart.

John Booth was a prolific writer of magic and travelled the world making documentaries on film.

He wrote, “John Calvert has reached the mountain tops of existence and has opened windows through which we can peer.” John Booth.

Thank you John for all you have done for the magic fraternity. Rest in peace. We love you.

John Booth was more than a world-traveler and outstanding magician. His columns monthly in The Linking Ring were a must read for us.

Through his essays and reflection, he brought to life the legends of magic and the golden age of our profession.

He will be missed terribly.

IBM President Maria Ibanez also sent out the news of Mr. Booth’s passing. She wrote that there are no details yet available for funeral or memorial services.

Steve Dacri wrote a wonderful tribute to Carl Ballantine.

He graciously gave permission for Inside Magic to re-publish here for our readers.

Whilst we were formatting the essay, we began to get a lump in our throat and by the end, we were in tears but with a smile. We really miss The World’s Greatest Magician, are envious of the friendship he shared with Steve Dacri, and so grateful Steve allowed us to republish his work here.

The phone rang, it was a little after noon. The familiar gravelly voice said, “Where are we having dinner?”

It was Carl Ballantine.

For a number of years, when we lived in Los Angeles not far from Carl’s Hollywood house, we had dinner at least 5 times a week together. It would start with the phone call, and we would plan the location. Sometimes it was a restaurant, other times, it was his house where he would cook a fabulous meal, and sometimes it was our house, which meant Jan and I cooked for him.

About an hour before the meal, I would drive to his house and pick him up. He would always have the cigar in his hand, and he’d climb into my car and I would say, “Carl, I have never smoked in my car.” And he would say something like, “you should try it.” Then he would re-light his stogie and off we went. He always had a few stops to make along the way (the news stand for the Daily Racing Form, or the coin change machine to cash in some of his seemingly endless supply of gigantic bags of money, for example.)

After the meal, we would usually go back to his place and smoke a cigar together. During this time he would convince me that we needed to visit one of the local race tracks the next day as there was a horse he wanted to bet on. It was nearly impossible to say no to Ballantine, he was very persuasive, and besides, it was always a memorable experience to take him to the track (or anyplace for that matter).

He liked Hollywood Park a lot, and Santa Anita. We would arrive at the club gate and all the people who we encountered, from the valet parking guy to the waitress in the turf club, they all knew him, and he always had a kind word for each of them. Of course, when they were not around him he would make some clever (and always hilarious) wise crack about them, but never so they could hear it.

Going to dinner with him was always a fun ride as well, people always noticed him as we arrived, and would come up to him to say Hello and tell him how much they loved his work on McHale’s Navy or in one of Mel Brooks’ movies…he politely thanked them all, then he would lean in to me and insult them mercilessly.

I still find it hard to believe that I will never hear that familiar voice again or spend time with him; I guess I expected him to always be there, like Vernon and McComb and so many others. As I think about all the time we spent together over the years, I recall a number of cool things that he told me that I will share with you here as a way of dealing with the incredible sense of loss I am feeling right now.

A lot of the stories about his origins have been told, some of them true, and others completely fabricated. Carl himself would often change the stories he told, I think he enjoyed playing with people that way. One thing he told me was how he decided on his name. He was known as Carl Sharp for a while when he was doing a real silent manipulation act, but when he decided to switch to the comedic act (he hated to be called a comedy magician, he insisted that he was not a magic act, merely a comedy act) he called his agent and the agent listened as he described what his new act was about (a magician who never does a magic trick) and the agent asked him what the name of the act was.

He said he looked around the room he was in, and spotted a bottle of Ballantine Whiskey, and immediately said, “Ballantine, The Amazing Ballantine is the name, and you have to also say, the World’s Greatest Magician in the billing.” He told me if things had been different when he looked at the shelf of bottles, he could’ve been known as Jack Daniels.

And the inspiration for the act? He claimed all sorts of things, and it was hard to determine which one was authentic, but he told me this one more than all the others so I believe this was the real impetus behind his famous act. He recalled going to see an act when he was quite young, billed as “the world’s greatest musician.” The man (he didn’t remember his name, only the act) walked onto the stage, dressed in an elegant tuxedo, the curtain opened and the stage was filled with every musical instrument you could imagine.

The man walked to the tuba, picked it up and told everyone how he would be playing that particular instrument, and then put it down. He picked up a violin and described the music he could make with that instrument, and then he put it down. He did this with many of the instruments, but he never actually played any of them. He said that stuck in his mind, the clever premise of the world’s greatest musician who never plays a single note. When he was struggling to find work as a legitimate magician, he came up with the idea of becoming the greatest magician in the world who never did a single trick. It was genius, and it made him a star.

I first met Carl via TV like most people. My father loved him, used to laugh so hard he would cry when we sat and watched him on McHale’s Navy as Gruber, and watching him do his crazy and hilarious act on Ed Sullivan and all of the other shows…never did I think, in my wildest dreams, that someday he would become a special friend who impacted my life as a performer and as a person. Life is funny that way.

He influenced me so much, Harry Anderson and I used to talk about Ballantine a lot and how he encouraged both of us to be funny with our magic presentations. He really set the stage for magic acts to be funny. But he was always quick to point out that his was not a comedy magic act because he never really did magic. “If a trick ever works in my act, I’m outta business” he often said.

Fast forward to 1985, and I was performing on the Tannen Jubilee convention and the Louis award was being presented to Carl Ballantine. At the cocktail party the night before, I met Carl for the first time, and my life was changed forever. We just hit it off, we talked for hours, had breakfast together the next day (the first of hundreds of meals together) and we were friends ever since that day. One thing that I noticed was that Carl said he was retired, he told me he didn’t even have his props or table any longer, and at the Tannen event, he didn’t actually perform, instead just walked onstage to receive his award.

Shortly after, when we both were back in Los Angeles, I called him up and he invited me over to his house. I packed up a couple of fine Cuban cigars and headed over. We sat for hours laughing and discussing magic. I eventually convinced him to come out of retirement, as I could tell he still had that energy, that spark when he talked about various performances and memories. After all, he was still doing voice-over work as well as acting jobs, so why not bring the old act out again.

It worked, it energized him, and he suddenly looked healthier. I brought him to Johnny Gaughan’s workshop and had Johnny make a replica of his famous table and booked him as the special guest for a show I was producing in San Raphael, California. He walked onstage, got a standing ovation, which clearly surprised him. He looked out and said, “Sit down, are you crazy? Wait ’til ya see the act, you may want to take that back.”

Well, he went on and did the famous act, line for line, gag for gag, flawlessly, and received another prolonged standing ovation. He walked off and grabbed me backstage and said, “not bad for a retired chump, eh?” As a result, he declared himself “unretired” and I was able to book him in a number of shows, and he suddenly had a purpose again in his life. It was wonderful to see, his energy was unstoppable on stage, and although he did the same act he was so well known for, he always ad-libbed and through lines in here and there that were priceless and fall down funny. He was enjoying the work once again.

Carl had three passions (after of course, his two beautiful daughters, Saratoga and Molly, each named after a race track) in this order; horse racing, cigars and magic. Back when he was doing McHale’s Navy, he owned race horses along with the stars of the show, Tim Conway and Ernie Borgnine. I asked if they made him a lot of money. “Not a dime,” he replied. But he loved being in the game and kept up what as a losing proposition for years, just because he enjoyed being at the track.

He smoked up to 6 cigars a day sometimes, and enjoyed the Cubans I often brought him. He read every magic magazine, went up to the Castle regularly to see the shows and we talked endlessly about magic effects, acts, comedy and show business, he was as sharp as a proverbial tack. Add to all that his incredible comic timing, his brilliant mind for what was funny, and that voice. His delivery was perfect, I never saw anyone with such natural timing, almost everything he said was funny, all the time. He was always such a joy to be with.

As an example of his comic mind always in gear, when we discussed doing a comedy magic lecture, we would get together and brainstorm what the lecture would be. After dozens of cigars and wonderful meals, we decided to do a talk show style presentation, and I would essentially interview Carl and ask predetermined questions while seated onstage smoking cigars. I went home and created a list of questions and the next day we convened in his living room. I pulled out my list. I asked him the first question, “Carl, everyone wants to know, how did you become interested in magic?”

He sits back, takes a puff from his cigar, blows out a cloud and says, “When I was a young boy, my uncle gave me a Mysto Magic Kit…. (long pause)…and fifty thousand dollars.” I fell off the couch, I knew this would be how we would start the interview, it was priceless. We presented the lecture at the IBM National convention in San Diego (in a smoke free hotel); there we were, puffing away in this ballroom filled with nearly 2,000 people. Carl comes alive in front of a crowd, and needless to say, the presentation was a huge hit.

We did it a few more times, and then we were invited to present it in London at The Magic Circle, which really thrilled Carl. He told me he really would love to become a member of The Magic Circle, but figured they would never have him, because, he reasoned, he didn’t really do any magic. I approached the then president of the Circle (Michael Bailey) and asked what he thought of The Amazing Ballantine and he immediately said “we would love to have him as a member” and brought it to a vote at the Council meeting. Not only was Carl invited to become a member, he was unanimously voted in at the highest level of membership, MIMC (Member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star), which was to be presented to him when we were in London.

Sadly, he never made the trip due to health reasons, I was already on a lecture tour in England, so I ended up presenting my own lecture in place of our scheduled comedy lecture, after which the President gave me Carl’s award and made me promise that it would be presented to Carl in a very special manner. (I was then completely caught off guard when I was also presented with my own MIMC honors.)

The following month, we arranged a special night at the Magic Castle, with many Magic Circle members in attendance, and we honored Carl and presented the MIMC to him in the Peller Theatre. He was clearly touched by the significance of it, he was proud of this honor; it meant a lot to him.

The Amazing Ballantine touched a lot of lives, in and out of the magic world. Many of his fans of his TV series and movies didn’t realize Carl Ballantine was also an accomplished variety artist (as he saw himself). Even Ed Sullivan told him he wasn’t really sure what he did. “Sullivan didn’t get it,” he often said.

But millions did, and he was loved and respected as an entertainer at the top of his field, a comic genius with an infectious smile and unmistakable voice. He was pals with Milton Berle and George Burns, and Mel Brooks called him “the funniest man on earth.” I agree.

Those of us who were privileged to know him personally will experience a deep loss of a friend and an artist. His legacy will live on in our memories, and I know that all of us will continue to smile as we recall his work and his friendship. Good-bye, my friend.

“I want to thank you all for coming, and on the way out, if you would stop at the table in the back and check out some of our jams and jellies we have for sale.” – Carl Ballantine
